Title: Old School Fantasy Figures
Post by: The Gray Ghost on August 19, 2011, 12:33:08 AM
Does anyone still make plain fantasy figures anymore?
Most of what is out there is designed to fit Games Workshop and a lot of the classic lines are no longer in production, even Reaper seems to be mostly specialist figures anymore.

What is a plain fantasy figure? Do you mean civilians?

Was thinking the same.
I feel you will have to be more specific.

rogues, thieves, magic users, rangers, clerics, evil fighters and so on,
male and female, not designed to fit a specific game like Warmachine but stuff you could use in standard AD&D.

Why would they make more generics? Surely it's been done...

Ral Partha (Iron Wind) and Alternative Armies (Fantasy range, not Flintloque) are my suggestions I suppose.

Reaper has everything you could possibly want. Thier catalog is impressively comprehensive.

Red box games do some beautiful figures. They are a little off from the old standards but you'll find some good paladins, magic users, thieves, fighters etc.

I second reaper, but also recomend Hasslefree and Herasy in the UK. Exactly what you are after I think.

I have been looking at Reaper figures for something to fill out a Robin Hood game but am put off by the size variation. Been thinking whether its worth asking for some photo comparisons here as it could be a waste of time and money just ordering what I fancy.

How far "back" in style do you want to go?

From http://groups.yahoo.com/group/disciplesofheritage/?yguid=438579800

This Group is dedicated to collecting, identifying and preserving Heritage Models/Heritage USA/Der Kriegspielers Custom Cast miniatures & collectibles of all types and sizes. I have created a second Yahoo Group for Heritage Lord of the Rings and moved all of the related files there. Please ask me for an invite if you would like to join the LOTR Group. There are also Groups for Galacta 25 and Heritage boxed set inserts that are open enrollment.

The Group is also open to discussion of all other Heritage Models/Heritage USA products, history, news, Heritage figues cast by other companies and figures sculpted by former Heritage employees.

I have been collecting Heritage miniatures since 1978 and am now the owner of the Heritage 25mm Lord of the Rings, Galacta 25, Champions, Superheroes & Villains, Medievals and the Star Trek collector 75mm Spock & Kirk. Most of these lines are in production and available now along with the other lines I own: Ral Partha 25mm Armies of the Hyborean Age, Bob Olley Titan Orcs & Fantasy Dwarves, some Archive and RAFM 25mm Cursed Ones. Tom Dye has kindly given me permission to produce some of the original cobblestone based Dungeon Dwellers. Please see his website for the Reaper produced Dungeon Dwellers which he now owns and has available.

The "NOW AVAILABLE" list of minis I have in production is in the Files section. Please email me directly at hayha@q.com with any questions.

Some of these are old school useful.

We play almost exclusively fantasy games (primarily, D&D 3.5).

Reaper used to be the best source, and monthly received a fair few Weaverbucks.  But we buy far less from them now, in part because in the last two years a growing precentage of their releases have been in the Chronoscope line (i.e. miscellaneous non-fantasy figures... some nice figs, but we don't need them) and in part because their fantasy figures have largely switched to match the art style found in the D&D 3rd and 4th editions and the Pathfinder rules - an art style that is extremely cartoony and emphasizes over-sized weapons and bad hair.  Accordingly, many of their fantasy figures, while well sculpted, look very silly these days.

However, Reaper does still have a huge back catalog of nice (and more classic) fantasy figures.  Most of the other companies that we buy from have been listed as well:

Dark Sword produces some gorgeous fantasy figures

Hasslefree has a small collection of traditional fantasy figures, and are very nice sculpts

Red Box Games is a newer company well worth checking out - it is Tre Manor's own company  (he has done a lot of work for Reaper).  There are some excellent figures in this range, which grows by four or five figures each month.  Check out this guy, for a mage, cleric, or druid:

Werner Klocke's Freebooter range also has some beautiful figures in it.  Of late he has been concentrating on pirate-type figures for his Freebooter's Fate game, but the whoe range is well worth looking at.

Heresy has some good fantasy figures, including some interesting halflings.

Check out Otherworld miniatures.  They are great sculpts in a "classic" style.  So far they have concentrated on "monsters" for your fantasy encounters (very faithful to the art in the old first edition AD&D Monster Manual), but I think they are beginning to branch into character figures a bit more (well, they are releasing a few Drow figures, at any rate).

A fair number of the figures that show up in our D&D campaign actually are GW figs - generally plastic guys I have assembled from the Empire sets.  But they are more Renaissance in style than Medieval.  But you can kit-bash some really nice poses from the GW Empire plastics (the Bretonnian ones are less flexible).
