Title: The Fimir of Albion
Post by: Mr Saturday on August 22, 2011, 12:04:49 PM
Hey all. I've been working on this project for a while now, and I've threads running in a few forums as I want as much feedback as I can get. I've been lurking on here a while now, and figured it's time to dip my toe in the water, as it seems like this forum has many excellent (and bleedin' talented) gentlefolks upon it, and your august opinions would be much sought after.

So here goes. I'm building a fimir army for warhammer fantasy. The more elderly among you may remember the giant fimir from warhammer 3rd edition, sculpted by Nick Bibby. I've always fancied doing a full army based on a combination of Celtic mythology and aesthetic cues from places like Brian Froud's art and films like the Dark Crystal. I found the background I needed in Warpstone 25,http://www.warpstone.org/issues_pages/issue25.htm (http://www.warpstone.org/issues_pages/issue25.htm) a WFRP fan magazine. Armed with this excellent material I began assembling the clan of fimir who rule the bogs of Western Albion.

There are very few fimir miniatures, those that do exist going for a king's ransom on ebay. I managed to purloin enough for my needs, and then came across the problem of human-scale fimir. There were two, one in metal scuplted by Jes Goodwin, and the more famous Heroquest plastic fimir. Not much. The new savage orcs had recently been released from Games Workshop, which seemed to be perfect for what I needed. Some sculpting, mould-making and casting later, and I was on my way.

Here are some shots of work so far. I aim for 2000pts initially, with another 500 later on.

Oooooo, purdy  :-* :-*

Nostalgia strikes  8)

I shall certainly be keeping an eye on this one. Are you using the army list from third ed?

(I want some Zoats now  lol )

They look great indeed.  My pal Pete Taylor did over a hundred of the original metal ones but they were stolen some years ago.

I did see at least one original head in my attic recently if it is of use but it looks like your skills at crafting them are better anyway.

And JB, if you really want zoats I can sort you out. Just wish I had some 40k ones left and then I could probably pay off my mortgage.

@Jimbibbly: No, I'm using the warriors of chaos list for 8th edition, I want to play these guys as much as possible. I might even get into an indy tournament or two.

@Svennn: Cheers. Over 100 fimir stolen? My God, that would break me. I think I actually saw a picture of this army at one time. I'll take that head, most certainly. Thanks very much!

Superb work there, Mr Saturday! :o :-* :o

Great use of the Savage Orc frames. Perfect!

Brings back a lot of memories.
Another great range dumped by GW.
Oh, well......

I surely have. I've been chatting to Bruenor for a bit now, and I've a couple of dozen of these lads. I've six built for the first fimm unit. They're a bugger to put together, and require copious cleaning, pinning and green-stuffing, but they look a treat once done. I love the guy with the two-handed axe.

Cheers Mason, it helps the motivation greatly!

Didn't I hear that Fimmir were coming back for "Storm of Magic"??  ???
Anyway nice work, the savage orcs even work. I thought that they looked bad in the studio photos but I can see uses for them now :)

Thanks all. Crom is actually a cythonian from Rafm's Cthulhu line, but I thought he'd make a great addition to the fimir army. I have plans for a few giant worms and such. The bileworm from Gribbly miniatures is going to be a mount for a fimir mist mor.

I've been following your Fimir posts for some time and really enjoyed the sculpting/conversion work.

I regret that I don't think I'll be following your lead, but I still enjoy reading about your adventures.

I look forward to seeing more.

Hey, those savage orc bodies make much better fimir than they do orcs! The heads look great and I'll like very much to see a few of the conversions painted. Have you thought of going all out and correcting the number of fingers and toes? Might seem like a small detail but the difference in # of digits between the metal ones and conversions screams out.

Thanks all. @Spooktalker: I did consider it, but I figured if I did do that I'd be as mad as a bag of crabs by the time I was done. There is another fellow doing a fimir army at the moment who IS doing the digits and all I can say is well done and good luck! Here's his blog:

http://gamesorkshop.blogspot.com/ (http://gamesorkshop.blogspot.com/)

Hopefully the paintjobs will help take people's eyes off the digit issue. I've one fimm left to finish greenstuffing, then it's onto painting. I'm pretty damn curious to see how they look painted too.

I'll probably stick pretty close to the tester, but with more tattoos. I'll know a lot more about whether I'll stick with that scheme once I have the first couple of converted fimm done.

Title: Re: The Fimir of Albion
Post by: Mr Saturday on August 26, 2011, 02:18:04 PM
Cheers folks. The Heroquest fimir do seem to be fairly prolific, as far as fimir go. I'm only putting the one in as a nod to the venerable old fellow.

Next up are some new weapon experiments. After ruthlessly pillaging the idea from Fimm, and getting some dwarf axes from the excellent Old Fogey over at TWF, I've put together some Celt style axes for my next batch of fimm. I figure the shearl artisans would be able to make some small number of bronze or iron weapons, so I'll scatter a few of these among the fimm units. I don't want them to look like looted dwarf axes, so I've had to make the hafts longer and slightly less crafted looking than dwarf weaponry, with loose leather wrappings and bronze fimir tokens and so on. I'll pop a shot up later on of the first one.

Been following this on your blog - amazing stuff - including the beasties you've been working on.
I've always been a fan of the Fimir, even more so when I picked up an old WD with a Fimir based scenario in it which cried out to be ressurrected.

Sadly ebay prices and terrible putty skills leave me no choice but to sit back, relax and enjoy the brilliant stuff you're putting together!   ;):D

Cheers!

Finally, after a serious amount of sawing, shaving, cutting, glueing, sculpting, casting, cursing, filing, pinning and eye-straining, the first unit of fimm are assembled. Oh yes. I will put aside for a moment the fact that that they still have to be actually painted, and that I have another unit of twenty to do after that. Such thoughts could drive a man from his wits. Let us instead concentrate on the fact that twenty fimm warriors now stand ready to defend their lands from all comers....aaaaand possibly do a bit of raiding too.

After seeing the fine weapons borne by the fimir of clan Myeri on Fimm McCool's Games Orkshop, I resolved to supply my own fimm with such fine arms as soon as possible. Thanks to Old Fogey on TWF, I soon had a cache of dwarf axes in my sweaty grasp. I wanted to have the axes look vaguely Celtic, and a lot less finely crafted than dwarf weapons, as the shearl artisans of a fimir clan have limited resources at best. Here's my first effort at such a weapon.

Before I delve in to painting the fimm, I have some work to do on the movement trays. Base X of War have been very accommodating with my awkward orders, and I just need to administer a little nip and tuck before they are ready for priming, and then it's full belt into the paintravaganza.

Woohoo - looking brill mate - love the weaponry and that unit looks what I always wanted a unit of fimir to look like as soon as I heard about them - can't ever remember WD featuring a fimir army so this is tops!

Much kudos for sticking with this - loads of work gone in there!  8)

May have missed this on your blog, but once you've got all these gribbly chaps painted up, how are you going to recreate the magical mist they generate?

Looking forward to seeing them painted up...  >:D
Title: Re: The Fimir of Albion
Post by: Mr Saturday on August 28, 2011, 12:42:48 AM
Thanks chaps.

@Thantsants: Well, rules wise, I was thinking of using the mark of Nurgle, which is -1 to shoot and -1 weapon skill to hit. I thought this might be a nice way to represent the reduced visibility of the enemy in the mist.

Sounds right enough - I was, however, angling for your thoughts on a modelling/scenic point of view - not to add to your wokload mind!  ;)

Post by: dijit on August 28, 2011, 04:27:57 AM
I'd consider making the axe head single bladed rather tan double to make it much less dwarf like, but other than that looks great.

Title: Re: The Fimir of Albion
Post by: Mr Saturday on August 28, 2011, 07:13:46 PM
@Thantsants: Ah right! Well, there's an section in the general's compendium that goes into making noxious clouds. I might make up two or three mist clouds based on that and make up some house rules. Moves randomly, no impediment to movement but minus modifier to charging and shooting though them. Once I have the army done I plan a few fimir flavoured terrain bits.

@dijit: The next fimm is getting two single-headed hand axes to see how that works out.

@: Dr Mathias: Thank you sir.

Sorry, I was wrong in thinking that the Albion book I'd linked to you contained Fimir.  Think you're going to have to come up with your own rules for them in that case.

Title: Re: The Fimir of Albion
Post by: Mr Saturday on September 07, 2011, 02:36:14 PM
Thanks very much DeafNala. I've never really thought of fimir as reptilian, more like the mystics out of the Dark Crystal or some mad Brian Froud creation, though looking at them, I guess they do seem a bit lizardy.

The hooded fimir is one of my faves too, and was actually the first fimir I converted. The new savage orc plastics are very useful, but I do wish there was just a tad more pose-ability in the models. I'm just finishing painting him, and I should have a picture or two to show off by the weekend. Those tattoos take ages.

After a couple of months of assembly, I recently pulled out the brushes to start painting up what I have built so far. First up was the fimm unit champion, the fian. I was very curious to see how my wee converted fimir would turn out, it's the culmination of a fair bit of rumination into how to make a human-scale fimir that I could make an army's worth of. I used the same scheme as the test model, for the most part, with a couple of alterations. I'm pretty happy with him, and it gives me an insight into how the whole unit will look when it's done.

Time to start the fimir batch painting machine I guess.

Well, it's been a while since I updated my fimm unit. life and such conspires to cut into the old hobby time. Now though, the project is revving back up. Here we have the next three members of my first fimm unit, including the musician. I've also finished the movement tray, which I'm very happy with, the water effects turned out great. I did test a few different products, you can read about that here (http://mrsaturdaysmumblings.blogspot.com/2012/01/fimir-dipping-toe-into-water-effects.html).

Here we have the latest addition to my first fimm unit. As unit fillers go, it was great fun to build and paint, and I think it adds a lot of atmosphere to the unit, as well as a little height. I'm hoping the ravens will match well with the raven on the standard bearer's banner and give the impression of a flock flying over the unit.

I looked at the Forgeworld advert out of curiosity, and am shocked at the price.

To be perfectly honest, I thought they would cost MORE!

I may have missed the boat by some distance here, but have you checked out the experimantal rules mention on the link, Mr Saturday?

Thanks Christian, I had these guys delivered 4 days before release, by some quirk of pre-order! They were cheap by Forge World standards. They are utterly fantastic sculpts, I'm fiending to get to them, but my discipline in finishing the fimm unit is holding despite severe temptation to get side-tracked. At the moment I'm in the throes of doing the standard bearer, should have a pic in the next week or so.

I did see the rules, pretty good in fact. I hear they are making an appearance in the new Warhammer Forge book 'Monstrous Arcana'. I understand it's more beasties for storm of magic, but I'd love it if you could just add them to a regular army. The thing at the moment seems to be allowing a certain amount of points for storm of magic beasts in regular games, which sounds fun.

I've been working on the standard bearer for my first fimm unit of late, and I've been trying various banner designs. I've settled on a stylised snake design which depicts the daemon prince Lisaart, the daemon the unit is devoted to. Now, here's the thing, do I leave the design as an outline, as you see here, and just finish the highlighting and such, or do I add some colour? (Everything is just base colours at the moment)

So I ask my most August peers here on LAF, what do you think? The design itself, and whether to add more colour to it?
Title: Re: The Fimir of Albion

The Fimir are rather Celtic in appearance so I would leave it as it is (finishing the highlighting obviously)  :)

Lovely banner mate, personally I'd thicken the lines a little bit, but leave it uncoloured, it'd look more crude and more in keeping with the character of the army?? Just my 2 cents though :D

It's done with a brush. I have a rather ancient 00 that by some quirk has retained an excellent point. I did paint it on in a slightly darker tone of the base colour of the banner first, to get the basic shape blocked in.

Finally.

Finally, I've finished the standard bearer for the first fimir unit. Man, that took an age. I must have had this guy on my table for a month. I have no idea why he took so long, but boy, am I glad he's done. He did have a pretty terrible accident while he was being painted, I knocked him off the table and he pretty much exploded when he hit the ground. This added some major repair and repaint time. I agonised over the banner design for a while too, eventually settling on a Celtic tattoo style on hide.

He sits nicely into the unit, and the raven on his banner looks good beside those on the unit filler. There is one teeny problem though, perhaps you fine folks might offer an opinion. When I was repairing him, I forgot the banner pole was positioned very specifically to avoid the musicians elbow. Now, it doesn't, so he sits a little oddly on the move tray as the pole rubs up against the model beside him. I can leave it, or cut the pole just under the wrappings under the fimm's hand. What say you?

Here's a wee groupshot of some of the finished members of the Súile na Lisaart. Half the unit is now painted. Woot!

The next two fimm out of the swamp are done and dusted. I have some more almost done on the painting table, but I thought I'd pop these up in the meantime. The converted fimm is the most heavily armed one I've done thus far, with a helm and various other odds and ends of armour. His axe was an idea I got from another fimir fan. His fimm have converted dwarf weapons to give the fimm that Celtic vibe, and I unceremoniously stole the idea as it looks gooood.

The other fellow is an out of the blister bog raider from Bloodmoon Miniatures. They're having a bit of a re-jig at the moment, and are returning in the Summer. I picked a few of these lads up before I had decided on the road-to-madness savage orc idea, and I was loathe to leave them out altogether, so I have a few of them in the fimm units to give the unit more variety in pose, even if they are quite different from the converted fimm. Once hidden away in the unit they fit in pretty snugly.

Don't know how I managed to miss this until now, Mr Saturday, but this thread is brilliant - the creativity, the crisp painting, the conversions and sculpting, the standing stone, all of it combines to make a wonderful project (and I love that banner, by the way). I can't wait to see more of this, even though I dropped out of Warhammer Fantasy a few years ago - time is the problem. Then, of course, I see projects like this, and I think "well, maybe I can find the time again..." Wonderful stuff, and great work on the Savage Orcs - you make them look far nicer than the studio paint job suggests!

Like most people on LAF, I think this is an amazing project. The conversions are stunning and the painting is fabulous. I will dab ineffectively at the Heroquest Fimir that I have, knowing that they will never look anything even a tenth as nice as this.

Do you know that there are now two Fimir Army Books over at http://battlereporter.freeforums.org/warhammer-army-books-fan-made-unofficial-f88.html ? An embarrasment of riches for the Fimir player!

Cheers Red Orc, I'm enjoying building the army immensely. It's very satisfying finally working on a project that's been rambling about in my brain for some years.

I've looked through both fimir army books, the more recent release piqued my interest, as it's based on the same background as my own army, that is the fimir background published in issue 25 of Warpstone.

http://warpstone.org/issues_pages/issue25.htm (http://warpstone.org/issues_pages/issue25.htm)

I'll probably run a list based on the second book at some point, it looks fun, it's always nice when new material comes out for the fimir player, we're rather starved in general!

Okay, another fimm for the first unit. I must be speeding up, this lad was done in only a couple of days. I get into a kind of trance painting fimm at this stage. I've loved putting the unit together and painting it, but I'm looking forward to getting them done now, which all of a sudden seems an actual possibility. I think I may tackle the meargh next. It's only a single model, so I can lavish a bit more time on her.

After my recent foray into water effects on my movement trays, I decided to take a look at Base-X-of-War's resin base range. I had picked up some of these a while ago, but only recently gotten to paint some up. I must say, I do love their stuff, the range is increasing all the time and they are pretty inexpensive.

The swamp bases all have recesses for adding water effects, similar to the movement trays. You can see the latest fimm here on the base-x base waiting for the water to be added. This will be tinted to represent boggy water. I'm quite looking forward to seeing how this turns out, as I was very pleased with the result on the trays, and the meargh base's main feature is the bones of old sacrifice's peeking out from the brackish water at her feet.

And onto the subject of temptation. I'm sure anyone reading this who's ever painted an army knows there are times where the urge to switch to a new project is almost overwhelming. I have been subject to this of late, where the lure of the vampire counts almost turned me away from the swamp-dwellers. IN fairness, this was mostly due to me trying to figure out how I could get an army ready for an upcoming tournament in September, and I imagined it would be easier to round out my vampires with a couple of new units.

However, after some thought, and splendid advice from my sister, who is herself a gamer and understands the sensitivities of such a decision, I instead decided to use this as stick to make sure I finish enough of the fimir army to make the tournament. So, I now have to finish the fimm unit, the meargh, Crom, a unit of fianna fimm and more if I can to ensure the Fir Domhan make their tournament début this September...

I would love to see the Fimir as a tournament army - the sort of army that would stop people in their tracks, no doubt about it (and only in good ways, by the way!) The resin bases are looking good - can't wait to see the water effects - and the shot of what's to come is a good idea too. It means we'll know which models to be asking about specifically! Wonderfull stuff, this!

The "new" bases look WONDERFUL...being inexpensive is a real plus. All the To-Be-Done minis are FANTASTIC...enjoy the painting.
As someone who has painted relatively large "armies";i.e., over 600 pieces each, I can relate to the problem of staying focused when another project beckons...that's why God created skirmish games.

I've been rifling through the bits box looking for some accessories for the meargh. I ended up with some bits to spruce up the meargh's rather plain bone staff, which you can see mocked up here. It's not fixed in place yet, as I'm wondering what ye think of the bones and branches arrangement I've got going on. If I go with this, I'll probably paint wood grain on the staff to make it wood rather than bone.

Dig the owl?

I like the Owl & love the staff; the branches seem to imply that the staff is still alive & it's clutching the skulls...maybe you could add a few leaves. This is going to be an UBERCOOL piece!

I'll vote no for the owl. Great idea wrong creature for me I'd imagine a Fimir with a swampy familiar like a snake, frog, toad or something deamonic an owl seems to nice for an evil fimir. Mind you everything else you've created is spot on so what do I know :)

Thank you kindly.

@Mutant Jon, I know what you're saying, an owl isn't your standard swamp creature. I think that's why I like it though, it gives the meargh a bit more mystery. I will, however, be giving the dirach some daemon-style familiars, as the fluff is pretty specific about them having a companion daemon.

Great looking Meargh I love the owl. Also is that Skull on the staff from the Minotaurs box? It's a useful piece. I used mine as a Chaos Terminator shoulder Pad cos I had an arm but no shoulder pad due to donated bits.

Big day today. Finally, and I mean finally, I have the first fimm warrior unit done! It's a big deal for me, as this army was a long time rumbling around my head before I even started, so looking at a finished unit now is pretty satisfying. The Súile na Lisaart are table ready at last, which let's me work on a character as a little reward, so it's back to converting the meargh's staff.

Here's some shots of the final four fimm, and a group shot of the whole unit.

Crikey, thanks DeafNala, that's very kind of you to say!

Well, quite a few in fact. Another unit of fimm, a unit of fianna fimm, (large fimir) a unit of nobles (Forge world/noble fimir) a meargh, 2 dirach, fimir mistmor, human chieftain, a unit of allied tribesmen, hunting dogs, human horsemen, chariot with fimir noble, noble riding marl worm, a unit of hagworms, floating sacrificial altar, a unit of fenbeasts, half-dead (bog bodies),Crom, the great worm, and finally Balor, a fimir deity.

Cheers, here's a wee update.

I'm about half way through painting the meargh, and enjoying it immensely, though the slight pressure of having to have her done this day next week is lighting a fire under my rear to say the least. I won't get the water effects done in time, but apart from that she should be ready to rock.

I essentially want her to look like a mean old fimir granny.

No part of her you see here is entirely done, though the hair, staff and skin are almost there. The robe is difficult, I want it to look pretty worn and a bit grimy without just looking just plain old rubbish. The cowl will be as much of a pain too, I'll warrant. The pool in front of her will have three skulls half submerged in bog water, I'm really looking forward to this bit. I love doing the swampy bases. Also, after  a bit of mulling, I think I'll add a little ivy to the staff, not much, just a few strands of Army Painter's poison ivy.

Once she's done, I'll be doing a 50mm base with a floating rock platform for her to float about on, trailing weed and gunk as if she just willed it up out of the swamp. The altar of Fimul (war-shrine) model might go the same way, either that of a fen-beast style conversion thingamy.

Einarolafson has a great technique which I had not considered: small brushstrokes to indicate the weave.

The weave technique is genius. So simple, but suggests the material so well. I must try that, maybe not for the meargh, but there's a dirach it might look great on. Cheers for the link Mason!

Almost there. The meargh is pretty much finished, the only thing missing being the water effects which will be added to the two pools on her base, so these skulls will be half submerged. I'm pretty happy with how she turned out, she looks high-ranking, but still fits in with the fimm as her robes looks worn and the tone is quite subdued for a blue garment. Being the clan leader, this is about a fancy as fimir get, so I'll have a good reference now when doing nobles, dirachs and other higher-ranking fimir.

The bog water will have to wait until after the weekend though, as she is destined to lead the clan into their first tournament. Then I might have a stab at painting either the half-dead or Crom...

After some final touches and the addition of some foetid swamp water, here's the withered, saggy leader of the Fir Domhan, Morgayne. She's not as scary as a chaos lord, or as nimble as a dark elf sorceress, but she's got a bus pass in there somewhere and she's not afraid to use it. In the end the addition of the staff, ogham scraps of parchement (which do actually say something) and a spot of fancy basing really helped jazz up a very old model. She's given me an idea how all the other old school fimir will look, and I'm very excited to get started on nobles, fianna fimm and the dirach. The question now is, do I do the fianna fimm next, or the half-dead?

Title: Re: The Fimir of Albion
Post by: Mr Saturday on September 07, 2012, 12:51:04 PM
Thanks all! I am very happy with the result.

I'm very excited about the next unit. I've decided on the half-dead, a unit of hideously distorted bog bodies, some overgrown with roots and encrusted with filth, still clutching Celtic style swords, or wearing tarnished helms, whipped into battle by a fimir driver. Here's the backstory, if'n folks are of a mind to read it:

The Half-Dead
At the edge of the fens surrounding the holdings of the fir domhan stand carved stones twice the height of a man, jutting eerily out of the bog. Many are overgrown by moss and weed, or have begun to list as the swamp inexorably undermines their foundations. It is at these places the traveller must avoid trespass at all costs, for in doing so he will awaken their awful guardians.

These terrible creatures are the leathery remains of those sacrificed to Fimul by the meargh and dirach of the clan over the centuries. They are given awful life by a shard of Leystone, which is jammed into the throat of the sacrifice once it is cut. The leystone, or weird stone as some call it, slowly pulls magical power from the depths of the fen the body lies in, often re-shaping muscle from rock, root or mud until the half-dead is ready to emerge, sometimes months, or even years later. The natural preservative in the bog gives the creatures a leathery, distorted appearance, all the more awful because of the blue glow spilling from their eyes and mouth.

The full horror of the creatures name is only apparent when in battle against them. Not the mindless grasping of the undead for the half-dead, but instead the berserk strength of madmen, for each still contains a soul, trapped there by the leystone and bound to serve the fimir for all time. There are tales of some fimir holds long since abandoned, whose marker stones are guarded still.

Morgayne only calls on these warriors in times in great need. The terror they inspire makes them hideous foes, as many of the tribes tell stories of warriors dragged screaming down into the swamp in the embrace of the half-dead. More still tell the terrible tale of Nuada, once a mighty human warrior who dared to kill a meargh, but now serves as the most powerful and cursed of the half-dead, who never sleeps, but dwells in madness under the stinking waters.

Such is gift the fimir have for vengeance.

Here's the tester I whipped together at lunch. He's not quite there, needs some roots or branches or something. The skin will be dark peaty brown, but the bone will be regular bone. If I painted it all brown as it would be in reality, this model would be on a one way ticket to boringtown. Removing the plastic base will be the biggest pain in the hoop.

He's a pretty decent looking mini & should work well with the Firmir...actually I think you could make most anything you turn your hand to look good.
I can identify with the base-removal-blues. The ones I've been dealing with are metal. I've been doing the grinding thing with my trusty old Dremel; power tools add a certain danger/excitement factor for moi...there's also a certain amount of blood shed involved.

Kits used: As you spotted, Mantic zombies and Warlord Games Celts. Heads from the GW skeleton warrior, grave guard, corpse cart and black knight box sets. Between them all there are a few very usable heads for Celtic undead. Some of the arms are from the skeleton warrior set too.

To give myself a wee break from painting various shades of stone for this castle I'm painting for a friend, I decided to mock up a Marlwyrm rider for the fimir. I'm quite taken with the idea, and the mock-up has me excited. Here he is at the moment:

He's still pretty rudimentary, but I like it so far. I do like the downward pointing spear and the flowing cloak. The savage orc boar boy legs fit the wyrm model perfectly, which helps me out immensely. The other hand has a punch dagger, but I think I'll remove that so I can attach a chain to it, which will be hooked into the wyrm's upper lip so he looks like he's directing it. The saddle will be leather with some bits and bobs hooked on, skulls, weapons etc. I'd love some of the extras from the ogre stonehorn kit for this like the meat, hooks and so on.

I might be jumping the gun here, as I don't know for sure if the new chaos warrior book will even have monstrous cavalry, but I couldn't resist. I'll still need to wait though, as I have no idea what base size to use. Still, it'll be a great unit to work on.

Now. Back to painting stone...

Thanks chaps! I'm very happy with them indeed. My hands are tied on selling them, it's GW's ip, and they'd be on me like rabid dogs if I started selling them.

On another note...

The monumental castle project I've been doing is done, (Huzzah!) and with barely a moment to switch paint for modelling tools I barrelled right into the half-dead unit I've been eyeing forlornly for the last few weeks. Here is the test model, assembled and with a re-built shoulder and other small green stuff clean-ups. I'll be painting him up as soon as the green stuff cures.

The biggest problem with him was removing the integral base that Mantic models come with. I had a notion to try a soldering iron to melt it off. Boy, did that work well. A couple of seconds and the base was evaporated by the solder iron leaving only his feet. Now, there's a couple of things with this. The iron is super hot and produces fumes from the melting plastic, and if you touch it, the burn is super nasty. I also used it to add more holes to his flesh, for which it works perfectly. I can see this being used to zombify models by melting flesh, hollowing out eyes and adding ragged holes and stringy flesh. The iron is now firmly in my hobby tool set.

LOOKIN' GOOD! While I'm not fond of the newer G.W. skulls, the kit bash is very creative. VERY WELL DONE!
I've got a soldering iron with an Exacto style blade for the tip; if I get some plactics wit bases I'll have to try it out...good idea.

Thanks very much folks, I'm really enjoying the project I must say.

The test model for the half-dead is done. He painted up pretty quickly once I'd gotten the skin the way I wanted it, which did take some experimentation. I wanted him to have that mahogany looking skin that most bog mummies have, quite dark, which meant highlighting had to be subtle but still effective. The bone I painted as normal, even though it would also be quite dark in reality, but this would have been pretty boring on a model. I then used a matt varnish over gloss, which tends to give a satiny look to the skin. I use this on the fimm warriors too to give their skin a little lift.

I used some Macharius Solar  Orange from the now defunct Games Workshop foundation range to add rust to the iron. I added a little flow improver to this to dilute it to a milky consistency. I created patches of orange on the sword which created a very pleasing random corrosion effect. It's a little hard to see on the picture, unfortunately.

The rotted kilt is a 50/50 mix of Mechrite Red and the skin colour. I wanted to mute down any clothing as it would have been stained by the peat as well, but not so much that it was indistinguishable from the skin. I'm thinking of using this mix for hair, as all bog mummies appear to be redheads, which I imagine is the bog's doing over time.

More leathery bog undead soon!

Thanks all. @Rob, bog mummies have dark skin regardless of the original skin colour, as the peat stains the remains.

I had a go at it the eyes last night, and I'm pretty happy with the result. I'm still unsure which way to go, however. I do like the way it adds a new focal point to the miniature, and I think I managed to avoid washing out the face putting a pale glow into a light face. There's still a decent amount of contrast, which I don't think would have been the case had I used yellow or red.

So, now I would love some feedback on what ye think. Glow, or no glow?
Title: Re: The Fimir of Albion
Post by: Doomhippie on November 10, 2012, 01:02:43 PM
That's tough to decide. I like both versions. The one without the glow has a different feeling to it - emptiness (little wonder) in a more metaphysical way if you get my drift. Hopelessness, that kind of direction.

The glowing eyes look absolutely cool from a painters point of view. From the background there is the feeling of some different entity and consciouns having invaded the dead body and using it as a puppeteer might pull the strings of his little toys. The one without the glow feels like it's the original being having come back.
Title: Re: The Fimir of Albion
Post by: Mr Saturday on November 10, 2012, 09:18:16 PM
I'm inclined to go with the glow. It will give the models a nice focal point I think. As to the unit's background, they aren't empty shells animated by another, but neither are they autonomous. The glow comes from the leystone jammed into their throats after they were sacrificed, which traps the soul and binds it to the fimir.

Dear Mr Saturday,

Not only am I blown away by the sheer inventivness, originality and artistry involved in your project, but I have also been transported back nearly quater of a century by misty eyed nostalgic reverie - 3rd edition was my edition (and when zoats were mentioned earlier on in this thread I spat tea all over the computer).  Beautiful stuff sir.

Loving the undead.  The poses and look instantly put me in mind of Mike McMahon's artwork for Slaine - Sky Chariots.  I am looking forward to seeing the finished project.

Cheers

Thanks indeed! I started with 3rd ed myself. My first White Dwarf was actually the into issue for 3rd edition.

I'm very happy the half-dead remind you of McMahon's art for Slaine, as that's exactly what I was going for. I've taken a lot of my cues from Slaine. I'm hoping to do a warp-spasming fimir warrior with a hero harness, I've big plans for that guy.

There's been little progress with the half-dead due to work/sickness, but there has been some. Here's a wip of the next two models, one of which is the unit champion, Sreng. They still need a whole pile of work, but there they are. There's also one of the shields. I'm pretty happy with the colours, as the turquoise appears throughout the army, and also gives the half-dead a much-needed boost of colour. The shield will have some moss or weed growing about it when it's finished. Each shield will have the same colour scheme, but the designs will vary.

Another two test models complete my fiddling about with the half-dead colour scheme. The skin tone I think I am finally happy with. It's dark, like a bog body, but still light enough to take some highlighting and show some definition on muscles and such. The bone adds a nice contrast, as does the glowing eyes. I think that the glow is now a vital part of the scheme, as they most of the tones are very earthy and it needs something to jazz it up. This is the same reason the shield is turquoise. Celtic shields were very colourful anyway, and a few of these in the unit with varying designs will add a nice bit of colour. I'm quite happy with the champion. A slightly awkward model (actually an old Celtos model), yet I am very fond of the sculpt, and he suits the theme of the unit well.

This lad was a real test. There's a few models in the unit with smashed skulls and the like, so I wanted to use this to have the glow spilling out of any cracks in the head, not just the eye sockets. I think I like it enough to use it on the rest of the unit. I also love the way the solder pen melted the plastic on his abdomen, arms and back, the wounds and decay look really convincing.

With these folks done, I'm going to assembly town and will build the other fifteen members of the unit. Well, twelve really, what with the filler taking up four slots. More peat-encrusted undead soon...

Great skin tones with subtle highlights, the glowing effect works really well, especially on the skull, and the shield is lovely.

One thing I would suggest is a little bit of weathering on the bronze on the shield.

The shield boss is actually meant to be iron! I added an orange wash for rust (with some acrylic flow improver to avoid tide-marks), but it does look more like shiny bronze in the photo. I may need to up the paint ratio next time, and maybe add a drop of red to the mix.

Title: Re: The Fimir of Albion
Post by: Mr Saturday on December 14, 2012, 08:45:19 PM
Thanks Faber, very kind!

The glow:

Base: GW Hawk Turquoise.

1:1 mix Hawk turquoise:GW Skull White. Mix with some flow improver to the point where it's the consistency of milk. Wash the eye, and wash out over the edge of the socket, tinting the bone and softening the base turquoise colour.

Mix Skull White with more flow improver, to nearly the same consistency, just slightly thicker, and drop a small dot in the centre of the eye. It will not leave a tide mark as it dries like it would if you mixed with water, but should blend to the turquoise.

There may be a little clean-up, or adding some OSL to things like the champion's helmet, and that's it! I'm still refining the technique, but it seems to work so far.

No bother.

I'm currently working on the fimir slave driver for the half dead unit. I love working on fillers, they are a great opportunity for building the theme up of the unit. For the half dead, when the unit is finished it will be immediately apparent that the fimir have little regard for, or fear of these undead, literally whipping them into battle.

This fellow has a couple of new components I haven't used on fimm before. The resin fimir heads worked out great, and this is the first time I've used one in a conversion. Also, the broch holding his tattered cloak on is from Scibor. There's a nice range of Celtic style shields and armour bits I picked up from there, which will work perfectly on the fimir warriors are heroes. The massive shields I'll save for the marlwyrm riders.

Thanks Tony.

Bloodmoon do look like they are gone, unfortunately. Glad I picked up a few of their bog raiders when I had the chance.

So, the cutting, burning and sculpting continues on the half dead, with another five members ready for priming. The standard bearer is an old Celtos model. I had to lengthen the torsos of the plastic Celtic warrior parts I'm using as they need to be a little longer to maintain proportion with the legs. This is easy enough for the most part as the open stomachs are simple to sculpt. The fellow wearing the chainmail was another matter, and once this was done I felt he needed something more, so the loose belt was added. I love the Celtic horn the musician carries, it's such a crazy huge instrument.

Only six more and the unit is ready for painting...

I'm ploughing towards the end of assembly for the half dead, with only two figures left. Then I'll be swapping the green stuff, clippers and files for paint and brush once again. I'm hoping to have the unit painted by the end of February, which for me is a laughably optimistic deadline. Still, there's three already done...

Here's the latest batch of bog mummies.

The running fellow is one of my favourite models from the entire unit. Originally the legs weren't in a running pose, but as I'm keen not to have some non standard zombie poses in the unit (yes, I know the guy on the extreme left is classic zombie posing, but you have to have one, don't you?) I adjusted the feet a bit so he looks like he's jogging along at a fair clip. I'm also pretty happy with the torso/head on this lad. Originally a grisly trophy held aloft by a ghoul, I think it makes a great basis for a bog mummy with the chest all disintegrated. Lovely.

So, the next update will be the completely assembled unit, then it's painty time.

Not a major update, but the unit is all assembled! I can put aside the scalpel, green stuff and clay shapers for another while and take out the brushes again. Putting these models together has been very enjoyable, indulging my undead Celtic bog mummy habit. I'd had that unit in my head a long while, it's nice to have it translated into reality and stood before me on the painting table. With three models already painted, I've a good idea how the rest of the unit will go. First off though is the slaver filler, I really want to see some paint on this guy. Even before that though, I'm going to get the move tray out of the way. A dull job, but at least with that done I'll have somewhere to put the models as they are painted!

After the half-dead are painted I have another character primed and ready for the brush, a low level wizard this time. Already though, I'm thinking of the next unit I want to build. There's the marlwyrm riders (skullcrushers), the warped ones (forsaken) or, possibly the hag wyrm unit (dragon ogres), one of which you can see below. I think I'll need to work on drool for this unit. I may add smaller worms to the bases for these too.

I'm right in the middle of movement tray painting for the half-dead right now, which will look great when done, but man, is it boring. To break the monotony, I've started thinking on another new unit, this time to work as forsaken in the game. Enter the Warped Ones, fimir berserkers essentially. I worked up some fluff and mocked up a quick tester. The forsaken kit will come in super handy with these boys, should I decide to do the unit.

The Warped - Na Buile (The Rage)
There are some fimir so attuned to the powers of the earth that they are able to innately channel these forces to bring on a terrible battle rage known as the warp spasm. Their flesh swells and distorts into new and terrible shapes as the battle-lust builds within them, their bodies sprouting new limbs or terrible weapons made of bone and claw. Only a few fimir are blessed in this way, and are seen by the clan as amongst it's greatest warriors, always first to the line and usually in the thickest of the fighting. Once the blood-lust is upon them they see only the enemy and the feel only the desire to see his blood flow and his bones shatter.

Some of these fimir have small leystones embedded in their armour, or even their flesh, to make it easier to bring on the spasm. There are risks to using such methods, however, as at the height of the conflict some of the warped find they cannot control the earth power and can warp out entirely, their form growing immense and awful to behold, their minds reverting to pure animal instinct.

After the battle the warped soon revert to their normal selves, but those who have warped out and yet survive must be captured and caged, often for days, until the earth power ebbs back into the ground and their minds clear enough for them to be allowed rejoin their fellows.

Nice fig! I don't like so much the new gw forsaken unit :? but maybe, with the purpose of converting fimirs, there are some useful bits.
BTW, I really appreciate this little background text. IMO if everybody spent some time to share the background of their creation it would be a better world :D

Thanks! I'm tinkering with assembling a few more...

My first unit of fimir monstrous cavalry are starting to come together too, still riderless, but I like how it's looking.

I've spent some time lately with the less glamorous work involved with the army, most notably movement trays. I'm really happy with the resin trays I'm using, they look great, but man, are they boring to paint. They even need tufts, moss pads and water effects added.

Once I was done with the latest tray, I'd nearly turned myself off painting moss, mud and heather for life. I decided a little painting remuneration was in order. I've been looking forward to painting the unit filler for the half dead for a while, the fimm slaver, so I decided he was next up. Ironically, he is on a very detailed base, with an abundance of moss, mud... and... ah... heather. But there were spiders and mushrooms too, so all was well.

Anyhow, here he is! Now I return to painting up some more of his leathery charges.

Thank indeed! He was fun to do, though I probably spent more time on the base than I did on the fimir! Who says fillers are time savers? To be honest, they should probably take about the same time as the figures you're replacing them with to have a good visual impact.

Cheers. The worms are by Gribbly Miniatures: http://www.gribblyminiatures.co.uk/home.php (http://www.gribblyminiatures.co.uk/home.php)

They do a small range of resin models. Their plague giant is worth a look as well, an incredible model.

Thanks. I've managed to finally put together the first of my marlwyrm riders (skullcrushers). I had a devil of a time deciding what kind of saddle arrangement you could put on a worm, finally settling on a rough hide thrown over it's back and pretty much nailed in place. I added some assorted extras to the saddle, mostly taken from ogre sprues. There's so many lovely bits of those sprues, from buckets of guts to a pig water-skin. I had some Celtic-style shields from Scibor one of which finally found a home here too.

Only three more to go...

Another three members of the unit of half dead shamble off the painting table to join their finished brethren. I'm enjoying trying out various rust techniques, the armoured fellow turned out quite well, methinks. That leaves me with eight more to finish the unit, so... next!

Here's the unit so far, with eight conspicuously empty spaces still crying out for a fillin'.

INSPIRING STUFF! The modeling, brushwork, color choices, &, for moi in particular, the bases are OUTSTANDING! What you've achieved with the individual bases & movement trays transforms the minis from exceptionally beautiful gaming pieces into a cinematic/artistic experience. WONDROUSLY WELL DONE!

I haven't seen this thread before.  I've just been through all 21 pages so far, and dude.

Dewd.

I love the dedication and creativity in this army.  The converting (including the choice of bits), sculpting and painting are all excellent.

These suggestions are a bit late for the first round, but...

- What you want as a half-dead unit filler is a nice li'l ol' fenbeast (http://whfb.lexicanum.com/wiki/Fenbeast). ;)
- There's a little tip about removing* integral bases at The General's Tent (http://tyler.provick.ca/2010/04/29/thinning-integral-bases/) blog.

*Or at least reducing. But IMO if you can cut them thin, chopping the remainder from around the feet should be a piece of cake.

So are these fir bolg?

They are heavily influenced by them, for sure. Most of the idea for them is taken from oooolllddd issues of 2000ad where Slaine encounters the half dead on his travels, warriors animated by pollutive magic in the sourland.

Thanks! Cheers for the tips, the fenbeast are going to make an appearance in a unit of their own soon enough. I'm going to use them as trolls, so 6 or 8 of them probably. Same colour palette and eye glow as the half dead more than likely.

Another update on the half dead as three more walking corpses join the throng. For some reason I appear unable to take a decent photo today, so these will have to do! The two reaching out are probably the simplest conversions in the unit, I couldn't resist that handlebar moustache head on the guy at the back. Only five models left now to complete the unit. Here's a shot of how the horde of bog mummies looks now, it's filling out nicely...

May was a complete wash out for me on the hobby front. A perfect storm of deadlines conspired to keep me at work almost literally every waking moment. I would look forward to special treats such as 'going to the toilet' and 'standing up'. Such was my lot. Not that ye care, you bunch of heartless fiends. Very well then, onto the painting.

As soon as it became even remotely possible to get some hobby in, I was back at the painting table. My month of hobby silence is a major blow to my intention to get the fimir army battle ready in time for NWG this year, and I need to make up some time. The first thing to do was get the two fellows on my painting table finished off, the half dead standard bearer and another rank and file trooper. Nothing is simply rank and file with this army, however, so even my back ranker needed glowing eyes added. With these two lads completed I am left with three more half dead to complete the unit. I need to paint a character and get well into my marlwyrm riders this month to even get somewhere close to back on schedule...

Ogre-sized fimir and fimir riding giant worms are sitting on the 'waiting to be painted' shelf as we speak. I've really enjoyed making and painting the half-dead, but I'm really looking forward to getting onto more actual fimir. I've just gotten some of the components for my version of Balor in the post. The base models for that will be the large mutants from the GW chaos warshrine kit.

It's with a final buffing of leathery skin and scape of rusty metal that I add the last three members of the half dead to the unit. It's great to finish it. I had this idea wandering about my head for some time, and to see it done is pretty satisfying. Here's some shots of the finished unit.

Cheers!

I've started work on the first of the four Marlwyrm riders (skullcrushers). The Celtic Scibor shield is turning out great, it'll look nice with some weathering. I've decided to paint his cloak turquoise to match other nobles and higher ranking fimir. Here's how it looks so far.

I've pretty much finished the rider. It's a little hard the to see the work with the ink shining on him like oil on a body builder. He'll be matted up soon enough. I do rather like how the shield is turning out, the detail takes washes lovely.

I'm cautiously applying the base coat to the worm. I'll probably use this scheme, or a variation on it on all the wormy guys in the army, so I need to get it right. I think the fleshy tones for the main body and a lighter version for the underbelly have potential. I was afraid of him washing out, so I chose the yellowy green for the pustules. Originally I was going for very dark green, but I think it needs some brighter colours to pop. I'll probably highlight this up to almost pure yellow. The gums and tongue will be red/purple with a gloss varnish. Not 100% on the tongue, but purple is the idea thus far.

Thanks. I've pretty much finished the skin on the marlwyrm. He still needs his underbelly and pustules painted, but the main area of flesh is about done. In the end I went for GW rakarth flesh washed with ogryn flesh and then worked up again with rakarth flesh layered up to about 3:1 rakarth flesh:white, then washed with gryphonne sepia. I then washed the sores with leviathan purple, and finally baal red. It needs a little tidying, but it's pretty much there, Next, the underbelly and boils. The boils will be highlighted from green up to yellow, then washed with sepia again, as I want them to stand out some.

The first marlwyrm rider is finished! It's great to get the first of the bigger models for the army finished, up until now it's all been infantry, with the exception of the meargh. Now that the two main blocks are done it'll be nice to work on the larger and more unusual models for the army. I do plan on adding another block later on, the warped, but that's down the road.

The wyrm is 99% done, but I still have to add some drool to the tongue and mouth. The glue I use had dried out, so I have to wait for some more to arrive. Apart from that, it's done. It turned out pretty much as I wanted, neutral earthy tones to fit with the rest of the army with a few points of interest. I like how the green boils turned out, I was going to do them very dark green, but after some advice I changed to bright greeny yellow. The wyrm's mouth and the fimm rider's shield and cape also help jazz up the model. Hopefully the end result is hideous enough to distract my opponent some.

One down, three to go!

Today I've been experimenting with a new method of adding drool and saliva to my recently completed marlwyrm. I've not added saliva or drool to a model in a long time, and my materials and techniques needed a little updating. After some sage advice from Madrab on the Wargaming Ireland forums, I had a lead on a new product, UHU Twist & Glue.

I had been using Evo Stik Impact, but this was only good when mixed with an ink for blood, gore and such as it has a yellow tint, so no good for saliva. Then main difference between Impact and Twist & Glue (T&G from here on in) is that Impact is viscous out of the tube, but T&G is runny, and needs to be allowed to partially set before use. After a few minutes I used a thin steel rod to twirl some glue onto, and hence onto the first contact point on the worm's mouth. I then drew out the glue into the stringy shape I wanted, and rolled the glue from the rod onto the second contact point.

Once dry, I figured that while it looks great, it'll be soon annihilated by use on the table, so I added a coat of gloss varnish. This has two benefits, it hardens the glue to better withstand the rigour of gaming, and also thickens the strands so they can be more easily seen. I'm pretty happy with the results.

After finishing the first marlworm I thought I'd complete one of the characters for the army, Avagdu. He's been assembled for some while, and it was past time he got some paint. In gaming terms he'll operate as a low level wizard, and as a character I thought those big shoulder pads needed something more, so a bit of Celtic style freehand was in order. I added the name of the meargh who controls Avagdu in ogham to the back of the stone. Yeah? Too much you say? No way I reply.

Now, there's a pile of tentacles that need some red wash...

After sitting on my painting desk for some time awaiting his turn, Crom is finally done. He will eventually have a larger base he sits into so he can be used as either a gorebeast chariot or a hellcannon.

I used the same colour scheme on Crom as I used on the marlwyrm. I started using GW bloodletter glaze, recently, starting with this guy. Great stuff. If the other GW glazes are as good I'll be picking them up. I found a slightly better glue to use for drool too, a super cheap glue called Capitol, from the 'just what you need' range. Faster drying and more elastic than UHU, it even allowed me to suspend a skull hanging from several of Crom's tentacles.

Next up, more marlwyrm riders and some war dogs.

Thanks everyone! It seems slimy worm daemons are quite popular this season. He was super fun to paint, though I think I spent more time on the base and effects than the actual model. I'm always on the look-out for wormy/tentacle monsters for the army, to try and keep a theme going. There's another worm daemon planned down the road that makes Crom look like a garden slug...

It was all about the greenstuff the last few nights as I worked up the marlwyrm riders. Some gap filling, saddles with assorted paraphernalia, and the riders themselves. The fellow above (the standard bearer) needed a neck, a rebuilt right shoulder and some work where his tail meets his previously orcish bottom. I added a cowl as well, with a bronze broch to the front. This time I'll paint the bugger before I stick him on the mount.

You can see the musician in the back there. I've just started on his neck musculature, which is a little tricky as he's turning and angling his head. Time for the anatomy books. I better decide is he's going to be hooded first though, it wouldn't be the first time I've spent an hour sculpting muscle only to cover it with a hood, cloak or coif.

Two more marlwyrms are now complete and awaiting riders. I did rather enjoy painting the tiny version of Crom on the base of the guy on the right. I love adding those little details. They've just been given a coat of gloss before the matt is applied. It's usually when I'm putting the coat of gloss on I spot any little mistakes, and these lads were no exception, so there's a little touching up to do before the matt goes on. (Then more gloss on the pustules, then moss and grass on the base, then water effects, then drool...) I now have eleven days to paint the two riders and five war hounds and I find I'm looking up dog marking patterns for Celtic mastiffs.

I really must love punishing myself.

I'll pop up an army shot before the tourney. Of course, I've only started with the fimir, but it'll be great to have finally reached the level where I have a playable army!

Two more marlwyrms join their previously completed brother to bring the unit up to three. The ogre parts I had hoarded were a Godsend, providing the musician's horn, the mantrap, bags, body parts and other bits and bobs. Scibor's Celtic shields really did the trick too. For now, the unit is complete, though I will add a fourth wyrm later on, the Gáe Bulg wielding Brodar. I have to locate an appropriate barbed spear head.

On the painting table at the moment are five hounds. The colour scheme is based off Celtic mastiffs, and it does look pretty cool if a little fiddly. I have some base work and detailing left to do, then it's the army packing headache and we're off to blood the Fir Domhan at their first tourney as a full army.

Here a couple more images of the completed musician and standard bearer.

I just wanted to say that your conversions are wonderful, and you have inspired me to make my own not-fimirs (that will be very different, but that's another story).
So, in just one word, your work is inspiring. And I think that's the highest achivement you can get in this hobby.

Wow, thanks very much Ajsalium, it's really gratifying to get a post like that, it keeps one going. I checked in last night about 3am as I was struggling to finish the bases on my war dogs and needed a break, but after reading your post the dogs stand ready and finished this morning, so thanks!

Indeed, based off a Celtic mastiff colouration. Sort of. Tomorrow, the dogs will be up, and hot on their heels a full army shot for the finished fimir of the fir domhan. It's been a long road!

Not that I'm done...

Love these, really great stuff and bang on with the mythos and background, very much the flavour of Irish legends of the Fir Bolg and Fomorians. I collected some Fimir myself when they came out and got shot of them a few years back. I wish I still had them, I could've sent them to you!

That's right, I've made it to 2000 points. I can hardly believe I got this far. It's been a long project.

I kicked off this army in 2011 with a test model, the fimir from the old Heroquest game. I then wrestled with the conundrum of building human size fimm warriors, eventually having to make my own heads and a multitude of bits and green stuffery to make the fimm the way I wanted. In the end there were only seven models in the army that have not been converted.

I've had breaks from the project for months at a time, but it's been my main hobby project for nearly three years. This give you some indication of how slow I am at this. It's been really fun though, I've had the notion to do a fimir army for years, and now they're ready to go to war.

Of course, this is only the beginning...

At the moment I'm still very much in the process of tidying up some loose ends with the fimir before I launch into any new units. One of the things I wanted to do was to make a small base extender for my meargh so she could be mounted on a 40x40mm base or a 50x50mm depending on how I was going to field her. Just a wee base add-on I said to myself. Texture the edge to match her 40x40mm base, paint it up, and done.

This is what I ended up with.

As you can see, the idea expanded a bit. Still some water effects to go on, but other than that, done. When I was digging through my bits box looking for interesting little bits for it, I thought hey, why don't I make it into more of a floating slab of rock magically torn from the bog. Then I could use it to give the meargh some height when she's pretending to be a daemon prince, or I could even magnetise the top so I could put other fimir characters there if I needed a disk rider. So that's the way it went.

I was looking at it last night thinking while it's pretty versatile, does the base sitting on the stone look a bit weird? I've looked at it so much now I can't tell anymore. The other thing is the magnetic steel holds the magnetised base down well, but it's not going to take a major jostle. I have visions of my meargh taking an undignified tumble mid-game.

One thing I am thinking of is to just add a permanent rider to the plinth. A dirach, possibly. Then I could add some paraphernalia to the rock, a familiar, spell book or some other bits. The familiar would be especially appropriate for a dirach. Here's the model I'd be thinking of using, from Oakbound games. He'd need a little conversion, some horns and perhaps a weapon, but other than that he's pretty much bang on. His pose would work well as a rider.

I'd then work up the original base extender for the meargh, and lo, I'd have the meargh and a new mounted character.

Or, maybe I'm just making work for myself.

Post by: Mason on December 09, 2013, 02:35:14 PM
Nice work on that base, mate.
 :-*

Not too sure about the standard slotta sitting on top, though.
Maybe make a few figures without slotta bases that can be swapped in/out using magnets to give you options.
 ???

Or, maybe I'm just making work for myself.

 lol
The bane of the imaginative mind, my friend.
 :D

Title: Re: The Fimir of Albion

Yeah, I'm leaning toward a fixed rider. More work, but I think it would look better.
Title: Re: The Fimir of Albion
Post by: Mason on December 09, 2013, 04:30:36 PM
It does not need to be fixed, mate.
Magnetise it and you have the option to swap it out.

More work but it may be worth it from a gaming point of view.
 ;)

Title: Re: The Fimir of Albion
Post by: dampfpanzerwagon on December 09, 2013, 04:47:43 PM
I see what you are trying for, but as a gaming piece I think the Black Base looks OK. If you were entering it into a competition you may have to hide or get rid of the base.

Have you thought about placing a magnet in the base of the (un-based) miniature then have the mini so you could mount him (her) to either a standard base or the larger flying base.

I know it is more work, but it could be the answer.

Great work on the flying stone base.

Tony

After something of a break, the fimir train is leaving the station. The first one-eyed marsh fiend of the new year is a character, the aged dirach Grunsgul.

The model is from Oakbound Games, with some small conversion work. I added horns, as befits a dirach, and also a torc on his arm and a tathlum (concrete balls on a chain) hanging from his belt.

On the plinth itself I added some more bits and pieces. A jawbone, book of spells and scroll, as well as the little familiar. Dirach are also known as daemonfriends, and have a particular daemon they forge a close alliance with. In this case the diminutive scroll carrier.

A small update today. Small and disgusting. I've had the 'crew' for my hellcannon, Crom, primed and on the painting table for some time now. I'm still painting the base they sit into. They are lovely little worm guys from Heresy miniatures. Pretty simple models, the only bit of pop on them is the grub's face in the middle. Still, it's another tick off the list.

Latest off the painting table are two less than world-shaking yet very satisfying items for the army. Two base extenders, one for the meargh and one for my hellcannon, Crom Cruach. I've been tinkering away at the bits I needed for the cannon version of Crom for a fair old while in between other models, and it's finally off the table. As for the meargh, the first attempt at a base extender turned into a whole new character. My second attempt was less ambitious and worked out just fine. Both of the bases are lined with rubber steel so the models hold fast during gameplay.

PS: What's the point for the base-extender?  Certain rules or for use in painting competitions or what?

Thanks very much. It's rules, I usually use the fimir in Warhammer, mostly for 8th edition but with an eye for 3rd. The two base sizes make it possible to use it for more than one ruleset and creature type.

I use http://www.base-x-of-war.com/ for steel, usually I add it to any movement tray order I make, but I recently got a large sheet to attach to the bottom of a plastic 'really useful box' (it has a flat bottom) for transporting minis to club games. Thanks very much. I've been a little quiet of late, but I'm back on the wagon now.

Just finished is the unit champion for the fianna fimm, Odhrán the finmor. I added some freehand to the axe as it was a bit plain, and while I do love this model, there's some definite weirdness going on around the hand holding the axe where it meets the body. I essentially painted in some details to mask it. Next up are his five mates.

After some weeks of effort, the ettin is finally finished. He was a very enjoyable model to work on that taught me a ton about painting larger models. He was my first forge world model, and I can agree that these are kits intended for the more experienced modeller. But the detail on the sculpt is amazing, and worth the extra effort.

Planning how to assemble and paint his loin cloth took military organisation. Pins had to be drilled where each section of the garment was going to be glued on. The four sections were then painted off the model, as there was no way to reach all the recesses if it was assembled fully before painting. Down that road lies insanity. Once the parts were painted they were glued to the pins so that they lined up exactly. Then I had to greenstuff the gaps between the sections, (greenstuffing an otherwise finished model is not for the carefree) and paint those. Finally, add goat. Actually, I added the goat to give him more of a sense of scale, as there are no indicators on the model that he's a giant. For the same reason I added the multitude of tattoos and the dead horse and orc skull to the base.

His rules are in monstrous arcana, and are pretty funny. His personality can shift leading to in-game hilarity. He's super expensive in points, but, meh. I'll use him for any kind of giant I need for the fimir. He's a really nice addition to the army, and it's given me a taste for more large scale kits down the road.

Mmm... resiny.

Úfasach ar fad. In all the right ways of course.

Beautiful work on a disturbingly unpleasant model.

Considering what a disturbing mini that is, the Big Mutant Lad(s) painted up BEAUTIFULLY... a truly inspiring creation. VERY WELL DONE!

Wait a minute ... does he have his (big) left hand fiddling with his wotsits? Eeeuuuuuww.

The extra tones you have added to the skin are superb. It's too easy to just do it all one shade, but the blue veins, the pink wrinkly knees, the raw look to the creases around the face ... they add so many dimensions and lift it to a whole other level.

Belter. The cursed ettin is one of the best things to come out of FW and you've done it justice and then some.

I think that's his left thigh. Which isn't much less disturbing.

Thank you so much. This model was really was all about trying to emulate various skin colours and tones. I used a lot of medium to make various colour glazes, which for a model this size worked better than I'd hoped.

No kidding. As soon as it was released I knew I'd have to get it one day.

It's been a long time, but the Fir Domhan return!

This handsome fellow is a Myeri Tiarna by Geoff Sims, from the forthcoming Myeri Clan box for The Woods: Legends of Shandisholm (due out August, it looks like it's going to be a beautiful book). He's armed with a Snaghyrn and based on Alan Lee's Fomorian painting. Anyone who has any interest in the Fimir or Celtic fantasy should really check it out. The background of the Myeri is fascintating, and anyone who loves the fimir will love this as dearly. In my own clan this fellow will be Murdach, a noble of the Fir Domhan.

There's a blast from the past! Good to see you're still adding to it. :) That Tiarna looks proper.

Thanks folks. I've adjusted my fimir skin recipe a bit, and I like the new results. He still sits in fine with the existing army, but he suits my current style and techniques better.
