Not sure if this should go here but I guess that would depend on which version you were to model. ;)
After a bit of thought and research I'm veering towards a Swashbuckling style. I've just watched season one of the BBC series but apart from the Castle, the Sherif and Much I did not really like it that much.
I also watched the Kevin Costner version which was ok and have Robin of Sherwood Series one to view. My brother and myself always called that the Gay version so I dont think I will like it that much either. I tried to watch the silent version a couple of times on Youtube but just could not get into it.
I cannot figure out what series I used to like as a lad as there seems to be many versions out there but maybe its just that I'm old is why I'm not getting into the whole thing.
I kind of regret not doing this years ago as I'm having a hard time getting hold of the GW versions of Robin and Little John. I dont really like the Friar Tuck model though and have better versions of him already.
This is what I have bought so far.
Marian (Mark Copplestone) Marian (North Star) Robin (North Star) Robin (Foundry) Sherif (North Star) Friar Tuck (Mark Copplestone) Friar Tuck (Shadow Forge?) Little John (Foundry) and a Black Tree Archer. I have quite a few more Black Tree models for Guards and the Merry Men.

For rules I am looking at The Lord of the Rings ruleset.
I am debating whether I should buy the GW Castle or build something myself which I guess is a question about time or money.
Any thoughts or advice? I'm getting bored painting Celts so may start this project sooner than I had planned.
-
don't buy, build the castle! :)
I really like the overall team, all of them! :-*
-
Robin of Sherwood was my favourite TV version. I loved that. Don't remember it being particularly gay. It had Ray Winstone in it for, Christ's sake! And John Rhys-Davies as Richard the Lionheart. Great fun, with all the magic and devil-worship and stuff. Love it!
My big screen version of choice is the one with Sean Connery, Audrey Hepburn and Robert Shaw. A much-ignored classic. Though if that Mediterranean-looking landscape is Nottinghamshire then I'm a Dutchman.
-
My personal favourite has to be Errol Flynn in those lovely technicolour tights and of course the dastardly Guy of Gisbourne Basil Rathbone :) or of course the films made during the 50s/60s with Richard Greene following the old TV series.
I was always partial to the GW set. If I recall Mark Copplestone sculpted a very nice Robin inspired archer for the old Grenadier Fantasy range, not sure who is currently selling those.
-

Too much tartan, eh... lol
I actually think that the archery/shooting rules for LotR:SBG make shooting FAR too ineffective for a Robin Hood setting - unless you want to use some of the special rules associated with Legolas for most of the outlaws, or otherwise tweak them, that is.
I do like the rules as such for smaller skirmishes, as they permit a quite 'fluent' game, but I think you'll have to 'add flavour' for the subject involved.
I suddenly remember that I have an old GW blister with some Bretonnian characters, who resemble RH, LJ, and FT a lot... ::)

Ditto to both and I think the Connery one also has ronnie Barker as Tuck :D

Robin Hood, its Errol Flynn for me.
Looks like you are off to a good start with the figures selected.
Look forward to your progress with painting them.
Have you any ideas for a campaign or will it be one off battles.
I have a very old Avalon Hill game titled "The Legend of Robin Hood."
I always wanted to use the game in a campaign.
-
Cool! Now this is an subject I would love to dabble in.
But as long as we're on the subject of Robin Hood Media, that Disney cartoon with the foxes gets my vote.

Splintered light minis if you want to go down that route...I loved it as a kid
-
Favourite Robin Hood movies, in descending order:
- Eroll Flynn's
- Richard Todd's
- Disney cartoon
- Richard Greene
- Kevin Costner
- The one with Uma Thurman as maid Marian
- Men in Tights
- Haven't even seen the Russel Crowe version
-
Already bought his entire line. Cute little critters locked in the horrors of gruesome carnage. The Juxtaposed slaughter of battle and whimsical musical montage.... Man I wish they made a roster with a lute.

-
I'd vote Flynn/Todd/Greene for gaming purposes.
For rules it might be worth converting Matakishi's Conan rules, probably much better than LoTR.
Otherwise, Gripping Beast are releasing a set of Dark Age skirmish rules "Saga" which play very well, but are aimed at 20-30 figures per side.
-
- Haven't even seen the Russel Crowe version
Quite a mistake in my humble opinion, as it has a nice twist in the story. When you watch it, you might go on a "Ahh-come-on-you-bloody-bastards-this-is-not-even-close-to-the-"classic"-Robin-Hood-tale!" rant (I sure did), but when you can make it through to the end of the movie it all becomes clear.
The movie does have some funny lines and scenes but not enough to make it something in the line of "Men in tights". For the more hack & slash oriented audience it has more than its share of fun.
So for me, the Russel Crow Robin Hood was quite a nice surprise and people should give it more credit. Push yourself to watch it and you might be in for a more than pleasant surprise.
von der Tann
-
OK then, I will. ;)
-
The Russel Crowe was good up until the last 15mins or so, but never mind. The one with Uma Thurman had Patrick Bergin as Robin and Jurgan Procknow as the sheriff, a rather decent attempt but sketchy in places.
The GW castle would do if you're not bothered by accuracy :)
Interested to see where this one goes 8)
cheers

There was very nice range of 40mm figures, they did the merry men plus lots of armed peasants, knights, men at arms, the sheriff etc. :)
Having trouble remembering the name of the company at present though. ::)

Trident/Vanguard?
http://www.miniatureservicecenter.com/msc-40mm-vanguard.htm
I was walking around Sherwood Forest with the dogs earlier this evening, not that much of a coincidence as it is literally on my doorstep and the Major Oak used to be only 1/2 mile from my previous house (its about 4 now)
-
Howard Whitehouse has created a fun set of Robin Hood rules that were available for free in the first issue of the now defunct "Historical Miniature Wargamer" (Issue 1, pages 32 -40). I have played it as run by Howard, and it is a ton of fun. The magazine was published by Don Perrin. Try to contact either of them. I know that you can get a hold of Howard on TMP (The Miniatures Page) by contacting MexicanJack. Otherwise, send me a PM and I will forward it to Howard as he is a very good friend of mine.

Some of your models are very good, and I regret too don't grabbing the GW "Bertrand le brigand, Gui le Gross and Hugo le petit" blister waaaaay back.
Please keep us updated about your castle.
Best wishes.

If you go with Splintered Light you can still build a castle and a forest and a bit of a town and a road through the forest and a bit more here and there, maybe even a bit of coast for the king to arrive home - Richard, not John. I mean the actual "historical" figures as opposed to his whimsical stuff. And he has the basic characters and forces for both sides. So, another vote for Splintered Light.

Wow, I did not expect that much of a response so thanks for the ideas. Hopefully I can remember who wrote what and politely reply.
Plynkes, I think it was the Music and the magic which we did not like but as I have not seen it for years I may enjoy it this time around.
Argonor, it was the GW store managers advice to use the rules for Legolas which decided me on those rules. I may tweak things a bit and use cards for activation. If you want to part with that blister I can offer a good home. :D I see a couple have just come onto Ebay but will not deliver overseas. :'(
Lowtardog, those figures may do well as I need other characters as well as Robin.
Hitman, thanks I will get back to you on that.
All the others thanks for your interest.
I have my eye on some Hasslefree figures and a couple of Front Rank figures. Problem is I discovered after writing the intro last night I went to pay my VISA online and found that someone had been buying Airline tickets on it. I will have to hold off buying anything for awhile until I get that mess sorted out as I cannot even use Paypal just yet. >:(
The appeal of using the GW castle is its easy to convert to open it up and I would modify the Gateway with two of the turrets. I have been reading a good book about castles which set me off on this project called. Castles, Their Construction and History by Sydney Toy.
I would like a Zvezda accomadation building but may have to settle for the stone tower at the moment. I am only planning to do a corner edge as the Castle making it as playable as possible.
-
Nearly forgot, I liked the Russell Crowe version as well. Except for the bit where the horses kicked the gates in.

I posted pics of a few different versions of the leading cast here:
http://leadadventureforum.com/index.php?topic=16306.0
But that omits the North Star and Foundry versions, at least.
I have a very soft spot for the 1950s TV series. There was a touch of "Squadron Leader Robin Hood" about it, but the half-hour format worked well and reminded me of the ballads.
-
The Zvezda castle pieces are very good, and you can buy single towers or wall sections which makes them very versatile, although it might bump up the price overall although they sometimes crop up on ebay.
You might also find a suitable toy castle that might be adaptable.
Possibly cheaper too. Some notionally 1/32nd castles make quite a good starter.
-
I have a toy castle that comes with quite a bunch of (bigger) plastic knights (my eldest daughter has been honing her painting skills on some of those). I intend to do some work on it at some point, as it should make a nice centerpiece/backdrop/setting for gaming... And it has some of that 'Medieval England' fell to it.
I don't remember the name of the company, but I know that White Knight has it, too - and I can probably find it tonight and check...
-
I think it was called falcon castle (there are two versions, one has large round towers in addition of the square ones, haven't been able to track that one down) and is produced by simba.
Btw, Argonor, if your daughter still wants them, I still have a bunch of those knights. ;)
-
Btw, Argonor, if your daughter still wants them, I still have a bunch of those knights. ;)
I think they would be for my youngest one, then - let's take that conversation elsewhere, though. I actually plan to let both girls sit in on painting sesions with their own stuff (made some pot-holders by hollowing out wooden blocks - to prevent pots toppling over and spilling the paint). Just need some cheap brushes. :)
-
A book I read recently was Outlaw, quite a different take on the Robin Hood theme and a good swashbuckling read...a bit Bernard Cornwell in style
-
Read that as well, really enjoyed it.

I was looking at the Airfix boxes the other day tossing up whether I should pick them up as well. I decided against it as I would never use them either if I did manage to paint them.

I've found this tutorial online which would be a way of making a Castle if I could only manage to find some thin sheets of blue foam. I have been thinking of ways of thinning down some thicker sheets which could be interesting. http://gidian-gelaende.de/Material_HP/Wolfgang/Tut_Vampirburg/album/index.html

That was one hell of a tutorial you found there. That finished castle was a work of art.
Unfortunatly I have neither the skill or the sticking power to undertake any such project.

Nice, and not very practical for gaming. I can only say again: Some people should get a real life...

I picked that up today and have read about five pages so far. It seems a very good read.
-
Damn, now you made me buy the whole 3 seasons DVD set for Robin Sherwood!! lol
-
Where's the fun in that :D
I actually think there's more fun to be had in making - and definitely after making - a model that's practical on the gaming table :)
I just can't help wondering, how people find the time for such extensive projects - and where the h*ll do they store all those big models and gaming tables? I'll be one of the lucky few with most of an 80sqm garage attic to play in, as soon as I get the floor planks laid (many of the old ones had to be replaced), but if I had as many nicely sculpted gameboards as for instance Capt. Blood, I would soon run out of space, never the less... ???
-
I have managed to buy a pack of the GW Robin Hood figures on Ebay. I probobly paid too much but at least I've got them, when they arrive that is. He will be Robin. The North Star version has had some Greenstuff to bulk him out who will most likely be Allan A Dale unless I get the Hasslefree minstral.
The Foundry Robin version will be Will Scarlet. I have not decided on which Little John version I will use but the Foundry one is a monster.
I've done a bit more thinking about it and want to borrow and modify some scenarios from LoTOW, namely the Hanging one. The book Outlaw is giving me some ideas for games as well.
I'm thinking of having a few group of; Peasents (some armed), Robin and his Merry Men, Guy of Gisborne with some Crusader Normans and the Sherif with the Black Tree Men at Arms figures I have already bought. I'd like a coach which I may have to build myself. Friar Tuck should be getting a wagon from Front Rank.
I've also started watching Robin of Sherwood which is actually quite good if a little dated. Not sure if I can handle adding the magic for a Wargame.
-
As regards Castles, I would also recommend making your own , that way you get one that suits you needs. I made one and posted porgress shots over on OneRing:
http://www.one-ring.co.uk/viewtopic.php?f=50&t=18703&hilit=harad+fortress
Its not as pretty as Wolfgangs Vampirburg, but its perhaps more useable and versatile as I made it sectional.
I used the same foam material, but covered in it plaster, and dremel etched the brick work in.
Best of luck with whatever you choose.
regards
Scott
-
Nice Castle Scott, I made my Pyramid out of blue foam and find it a bit Fragile. I may go that root but am put off by all the tiny details that I will have to repeat.
Last weekend I made an attempt at making a wall out of thick plastic shower door, but think I need to get some power tools to do it justice.
-
I have made a bit of progress with the castle after a few sleepless nights. Basically as its 1/72nd scale I've had to upscale it a bit using foam to replace sections which I've had to steal to heighten the walls. The towers are also quite small so I've had to combine them to get the right look.
The walls are a bit unstable so I going to have to put a base under them as I need to keep the whole thing transportable for club meetings. I cannot just glue them down on a large terrain board. :-[ The tower divides into three floors for playability.
I've also just undercoated eleven figures and hope I can now paint properly with my new glasses. The club is starting Saga so I may find myself using these figures until I decide which faction I want to buy for that.

Looking great, I hope to see more soon.

A book I read recently was Outlaw, quite a different take on the Robin Hood theme and a good swashbuckling read...a bit Bernard Cornwell in style
Picked it up yesterday after reading this post. Almost finished it today. Great read.
There are supposed to be 5 books in the series with the first three "Outlaw", "Holy Warrior" and "King's Man" are out now. Book 4 "Warlord" is scheduled for summer 2012.
These books are told from the life of Alan-A-Dale.

Thanks (blush), no I am converting a plastic Celt for Much. I may use the GW name but have forgotten it just now.
-
I think it's Guy le Gros (Fat Guy). Which would make him French (and thus a Norman), which doesn't make much sense in an band of Saxon outlaws.
-
It was common for forenames to change from Anglo-Dane to French in the twelfth century. So having a 'Saxon' Henry, William (Will Scarlett) or Guy in the early thirteenth would not be unusual. His nickname could have been given by his 'Norman' priest or lord prior to him turning outlaw.
Also the idea of there still being 'Normans' and 'Saxons' by the thirteenth century is disputed as Walter Scott-esque.

All the Merrie Men have Norman-French names, don't they? Robin (Hood), (Little) John, (Maid) Marian, Will (Scarlet), Alan (a'Dale), Gilbert (of the White Hand). Possible exceptions are Much and Tuck. "Tuck" isn't a real name - it's a joke about the friar's fondness for food (BTW, strictly speaking, there were no friars in England until the 1260s or thereabouts). I don't know the origin of "Much".

Mr. HW has already sent me those rules, and they are just GREAT!
Simple, but fun, they can be used to have a quick, action packed game, or to introduce newcomers to our "miniature wargames world".
Higly recommended, and I can't stress how friendly and generous is Mr. Whitehouse to share this ruleset with us.
Thanks again and best wishes.

I figure that it was just not the Norman Army that came to England, some outlaws may have french backgrounds so am going to use some French names.

I haven't seen Russell's yet - waiting for it to come on the TV before judgement - but my all time fave is the Costner version, which I've based my Robin Hood minis on. Like your fave Bond movie, it's often the one that grabs you the most (and that's 'The Spy Who Loved Me').

I wouldn't be too worried about an opinion I voiced 20 something years ago ;) I've re watched it recently and enjoyed the stories quite a lot. I still wouldn't walk down the street singing "Robin, Robin, the Hooded Man, da doo da doh". lol

Iv'e just been cutting and rasping a base for the Castle out of green foam. My word its a messy job but is looking good. :-*
A box of Conquest Games Norman Knights arrived yesterday so am keen on putting them together. I should really concentrate on the Unit of archers I'm currently cleaning up and converting for the bulk of my Merry Men.
-
I'm very happy to share my rules. I only wish I had stolen them from a greedy baron or an overfed abbot rather than written them myself! :D

Have you seen the new(ish) BBC series "Merlin"?
Utter tosh, but has some light-hearted fun moments and might make another option for gaming if you want to start on a variant ruleset.

I agree - a great idea and it look really effective.

The castle is looking good. There was a nice robin hood range done many years ago by Hinchcliffe. I am supprised no one has mentioned one of my favorite Robin Hood movies, "Robin and Marion" with Sean Connery playing an aging Robin Hood.

"Robin and Marion" with Sean Connery playing an aging Robin Hood.
And, even better, Nicol Williamson as Little John and Denholm Elliot as Friar Tuck both adopting Scottish accents in an attempt to make Shir Shean appear less out of place! lol Great film otherwise, though.
-
When you paint the interior are you going to paint in Errol Flynn's shadow on the walls?
-
lol no I wont be painting Errols shadow on the wall. I could not think of a way of making a circular stair case so had to settle for the straight one.

They are Trent and slightly bigger than Perrys/smaller then Copplestone. Very nice scuplts and some going cheap here:

I have been thinking about doing a Robin Hood game for a while and have followed your thread with much interest. :)

Thanks for your interest.
Re the Friar Tuck and Marion, I got mine from North Star.
I hope to post some photos of my Guy of Gisbornes mounted troops this week as I just finished painting them today.
I ordered some dungeon doors from Black Tree last week as the doors in the Castle kit are a bit undersized.

Which range of figures have you chosen for Guy and the Sheriff's men?
I have been looking at the Black Tree Designs Hundred Years War range. ( historically far too late I know, but I am imagining a Hollywood look to my way of thinking and the infantry in kettle helmets and gambesons fit the bill)
What about knights for Guy etc, any thoughts there?
I imagine the Barons Wars knights by Foundry will be on the small side alongside Black Tree Designs?
-
Have you looked at Crusaders latest offerings?
http://www.crusaderminiatures.com/list.php?cat=5&sub=56&page=1 (http://www.crusaderminiatures.com/list.php?cat=5&sub=56&page=1)
The are a bit closer to John's reign than HYW minis, but you can have primitive kettle helms as well with gambesons
-
Yep been looking at them and liking them alot. :)
I am struggling to find some suitable knights to represent Guy and the Sheriff. Any thoughts?
-
Go 40mm I think Trident did a range some time ago would be lovely.

Yep, they are nice now available in the Stated I believe. Will most likely stick with 28s as I can use existing scenery, terrain etc.

I have used the Conquest Mounted knights for Guys mounted troops and have some Crusader figures for the foot soldiers. I was going to use Crusaders version of William for Guy. Problem is the foot figure is huge so am going to convert an Infantry figure to match the mounted version using a Wargames Factory head. (I'm going to use these figures for SAGA as well.) I did not want to use later type shields so went with the plain Kite shields with an inverted chevron like in the older TV series.
I am making the troops which staff the Castle and provide an escort for some wagons from the Early Hundred Years War range from Black Tree. I mentioned the BT figures earlier and was advised that they were too Late. :-[ but I like the English helmet and the less Armoured look.
I have made some shields from plastic card which should look something like the versions used in Russell Crows movie. I have not figured out if I can paint or find decals to match though.
I was trying to keep things historical looking but, there are so many images out there already that people have a preconceived idea of what Robin etc should look like. So I am trying to keep to things that look familiar and hope it turns out ok. :)
I think I have bought every figure I need so now its just a matter of painting it all. ::)

Makes good sense, I know you have a lot of PMC buildings etc

Ebobs knights are lovely but likely to be a bit too small. Try Reaper and especially search for Templars they would be nice for the Sheriff etc

Trent do two King John figures. The one without the helmet would be ideal for either:
http://www.northstarfigures.com/prod.php?prod=2848 (http://www.northstarfigures.com/prod.php?prod=2848)
The one in helmet would need some attention to remove the crown:

Unfortunately they are mounted on the same horse sculpt. I have both and don't think I'll be using them - I'll bring them along on Friday :D
-
Dan,
I know you are using the Black Tree Design figures for Guy's men and some of the Merry Men.
Presumably you had no problems when ordering from Black Tree Design?
-
Malamute.
I think I've had at least 10 orders from Black Tree since the move to the US. The figures have always arrived within five days to three weeks of ordering them.
The only problem I've had has been a German in a Soviet Platoon pack.
I never had a problem before the move either.
I said much the same on TMP the other day. Afterwards I thought that I'd be better off remaining quiet as the constant sales trying to drum up business is enabling me to accumulate quite a pile of their figures for a much cheaper price. :)
-
Nice work, Dan!
It looks like you are starting a new rush for all things Hood!
;)

Maybe I should just take a back seat now and watch the experts? ;) lol

A couple of updates.
Dungeon doors from Black Tree which I will have to massage into the Castle. I have three of each type. I have also made a new roof for the Hall out of MDF. The plastic warped and separated :'( good job I had not painted anything.

Great stuff Dan. Nice work on the cavalry, can't wait to see the castle finished ;D
I am watching your progress with interest. ;)
My Bertrand the Brigand and friends arrived today along with some Merry Men, Marion and Tuck from Northstar. Jusy waiting for my Black Tree men at arms, Gripping Beast and Curteys knights and I'll be up and running ;D

I'm just doing some spearmen now for the baddies :D plus some more characters.
-
I've been dithering about this project as I have about half the time to paint that I used to have available. I have too much time to rethink things. o_o
I had to repaint the Shields on my mounted figures as the Crusader figures have a boss which reduces the space for the pattern :( plus I seem to have reversed the colours used on Robin of Sherwood. :'(
Good news is that I have managed to get some more Bretonnian figures.
Guy of Gisburne in the centre, undecided about the others.

And the greatest of these are The Adventures of Robin Hood and Robin and Marion.
Don't let Sword of Sherwood Forest, which is mediocre at best, put you off trying the 1950s Robin Hood TV series that Richard Greene also starred in. The half-hour format really works, producing lots of ballad-like little gems.

Lovely project Dan !!!
Sorry for not comment before. The castle build is realy interesting to follow !
Nice to meet at salute to!
Best regards Michael

Very cool project so far... :)
Research material...
Robin and Marian is my favorit. I love the scene, when the two old men fight the guards at the gate/wall...
Very inpiring for TT-games.
Cheers,

Hi all, I've managed to get back to this project after getting distracted by restarting my Vietnam painting. I also got interested in the Falklands Conflict which meant buying a few figures and vehicles.
I made a couple of decisions about this project as I was not happy about the look of the Norman figures so repainted the shields and will use them as my Saga Norman Warband. More work has been done on the Castle. First the dungeon wall and rails.

I dont think it will be possible to play in certain areas of the castle like the stairwell, and also think it looks a bit odd to have the Castle in pieces while playing a Demo game. So am thinking of using cardboard plans off table to place figures on.
I have a bunch of BlackTree early Medieval figures painted up in a modified scheme from the original painting. Plus more Merry Men to post later. I've just ordered some Perry horses to remount the Blacktree figures on as the BT ones are horrible and did not improve with painting :(
Funny but I've gone back to my old 3.2 megapixal camera from which I can post unmodified pictures straight to the Web, which look better than my newer camera. 8)
I hope this is still of interest as its been so long since I started this.
Dan.
-
Seriously impressed with the work that you have done on the interior, Dan.
The Hall looks great, and the 'IKEA' stairway is bloody brilliant!
:-* :-* :-*
-
Always interested to see RH pics as I have a project on the back burner.

Good continuation on this, I really like the dungeon 8)

Seconded, glad to see this project resurface. :)
Mine has been a real slow burner, felling inspired to get stuck in again. :)
-
Yep, good to see this continuing - I have an 'on/off' Robin Hood project lying around as well, so any source of inspiration is always appreciated; and this one is great! That stairway especially... :-*
-
Thanks for the replies.
I really needed a break as after watching everything I could get my hands on, I ended up really confused about what I was trying to achieve.
I've also undercoated and filled all the walls and towers and will post a photo of that when I next get the camera out.
-
I thought I'd do an update as I now have a much better camera and a new Blog. I will be doing the WIP's here and mainly posting the finished stuff on the Blog.

I have almost finished the interior of the Keep but am waiting for some bits from Mega Miniatures to furnish it.

It looks just right as a playable area, plenty of space but plenty of different levels etc.
Glad this hasn't stopped :D

Excellent, glad to see it resurrected. ;D
We will also be returning to Sherwood after Salute. :)
-
Cheers guy's, its nice to know there is interest out there still.
Its been a long hot summer here so have had to work outside on the house rather than stop inside and paint models :'(
but on Sunday I managed to work on my interior houses (stable and tavern) while watching replays of Robin of Sherwood and John Pertwee era Dr Who. :D
Dan.
-
Jon Pertwee, my favourite Dr Who. :)
Looking forward to seeing the stable and tavern.
-
The castle looks great! Richard
-
That looks very impressive. :)
-
I've made the walls of the stables and barn and have made start with copying the style of the Conflix buildings. I then started to worry that they should be more Dark ages style. I want to use these for ECW and Pirates as well.
For the village of Wickham I do want to go with the older Dark Ages style. For the buildings around and in the castle I want the Conflix style but with a few minor changes.
What do you think?
-
That castle is coming on a treat, it is truly amazing.
-
I'm just scratch-building some interior buildings. This needs to be done before I can start on doing the groundwork inside the Castle.
I had a rethink and the stables will be placed directly in front of the keep steps with a paved courtyard between them. The Tavern will sit next to it which leaves room for a coral type enclosure near to the blacksmiths. The reason I did this is I felt that it would be too confined if I added yet another building inside the castle. I am going to move the Blacksmiths about 30mm to make room for a longdrop or something similar.
I was wondering how to do the render on the buildings for a few days. Then at work our delivery driver gave me a ream of black leather grain card. I will put some filler over this to increase the texture. :) Today my girlfriend (a dress designer) said she would give me all the offcuts of fake fur that they usually throw away. :-* I can use this for roofs on my village buildings as I want to use either slate or shingles inside the Castle.
Blacksmiths.

-
Nice, those minis look great. :) Your castle looks fabulous as well.
-
starting to come together really well now, the castle's really looking the biz :D

I have to say those village houses look awesome, it's like I'm looking at a fantasy painting.
the rest of the stuff is great too of course :)

At the weekend I put some paint on my baseboard which showed up a few problems. I am happy with how it looks so far.

I used four washers, a bolt and two nuts plus some rollers from a photocopier. I could add a couple more washers to make tire tracks.

I think it comes from the way the Saxons lost their lands to the Norman Invaders and the Church which has lead to the current class structure in the UK.
I could be wrong viewing as I am from a distance, as I've not lived in the UK for 25 years.

Its a bit of a cheat really, I was trying to work out what to do with the ropes. I really did not want to do anything complex or make anything that would get in the way of play. I hit on the idea of having the ropes run to the centre of the frame and then down through the centre pole (will be painted as wood with iron bands) into the stone block. I'm still deciding on whether to leave it like that or create a hatch at the rear where the ropes can be anchored and then untied to let the bodies down. The ropes will be protected from anyone standing on the blocks trying to cut them with a knife.
I really think I may be overthinking this though.

That works for me Dan, great idea 8)

I stumbled on this thread googling around for black tree hundred years war comparison pics and went through all twelve pages. :-* :-* Awesome project, very inspiring! I hope to get paint on my own castle and knights in the next few years. By lucky coincidence I even picked up the GW not Robin Hood gang at a local con a month ago. I look forward to seeing it continue to develop!

Splendid stuff. :)
-
Excellent work.
The Torturer does seem to have mammalian protruberances :)
-
Great stuff lots of ideas for my project thanks...
-
Excellent buildings. Love the idea of the open back but can you get to the figures easily or do you also have lift off roofs?
-
Thanks.
The roofs lift off so no problem to get figures inside. I made sure the bases have plenty of room to fit and can get 24 figures inside the Tavern. I aim to get some barrels and tables inside which will take up a bit of the space.
The Torturer is from the Ackland accessories range sold by Black Tree design.

I am doing the flock this week and hope to have the Castle assembled this weekend for a playtest with all the terrain. I should have some photos to post.

Looking forward to it, Dan!

Agreed!

Thanks for the support.
Myself and mate Tyrone had a great weekend playing with all that I had painted, and am very pleased with how everything went. I had lots of people stop and ask how I had made the Castle etc. I think Gripping Beast will be getting some order for the Church as well as I had a few enquires about it. :)
I will do a write up in the next couple of days as we took quite a few photos and played five games. Four of them were scenarios that we had been working on while the other was just an excuse to get everything onto the table.
I also need to take some proper photos of the items that I had finished just in time for the Demo.
This is not the end of the build as I have several more forces to paint plus a few items of terrain.
I managed to buy some more Zombies/Ghouls, Skirmish Sangin Rules, Modern Kiwis, IHMN rulebook and Black Dragon Tong. Even though I said I did not need anything else to buy. Oh and I bought some Black Tree Zulu Wars Brits when I got home as we are talking about doing a project together. ::)
Dan.

I've posted two games and an intro to Call to Arms on the Blog. I hope to do the other reports over the weekend.
I am pleased to say that nothing was damaged on the weekend but when unloading the car I bumped my metal case on the door to my games room knocking about six figures off their magnetic bases. I have not looked too closely to see if anything is scratched. Then today while reassembling the Castle I dropped the smithies fire/anvil/bellows on the floor and instinctively put my foot on it to stop it bouncing :-[ I think my foot did all the damage rather than the fall ::) Never mind at least it survived the weekend.

I posted some more about the games. I'm a bit worn out with frustration after trying to post the pic's so forgive me for not posting many here.
The problem was the Blog seemed to add the photos in any spare space randomly. They even moved from the positions I had dropped them in but its all sorted now. ???
I recreated some more photos for Ford Transit and took some photos of the Black Knights of which I have four more to paint, and a supply wagon with drunk Monk.

At the convention there was a GW Castle Tower, gate and wall for sale at $25 (about 12 quid). I almost bought it for bits but decided that I had enough to do and it confirmed my decision to make my own Castle rather than going the GW route.
-
Wow! All that work has really paid off as it looks so impressive when you see it all together on the table.
-
Great eye candy, Dan.
Will have a peep at the blog later.
Love the new additions.
:-*
Where is the Drunk Monk and cart from?
-
The drunk monk is Shadowforge, I think, from their Gridiron range. Forgot that was one of the ones I wanted when I visited Nic's shop in Feb. The cart?

The cart is from 4ground, its a bit larger than the other wagons but you cannot really tell unless they are side by side.
Last night in bed while trying to sleep I realized that I should have bought that Castle as it would work for IHMN. :'(
-
I have added some buildings from 4Ground and made a few vegetable plots for the table. I also extended the table area so I can have a bigger area for the Merry Men to hide in.

Bishop, Philip of Arras, Bishops assistant, Duc de Blackadder, Allan a Dale, Hern, Jester, Village idiot and Executioner.
I'm having problems deciding what faction to work on next; Merry Men, Sherifs Men, some French or Richards entourage. ::) I think I am leaning towards some mounted Merry Men but the amount of conversion work is putting me off.
-
Oooh!
Lovely crisp paintwork, Dan.
Some wonderful characters in there.
:-* :-* :-*

Great to see you are still motivated with this project. :)

Great collection of figures 8)

A nice and colorful collection of characters!

Great to see you are still motivated with this project. :)
Thanks, I want to get it done so I can get stuck into another big project. I feel that if I were to put it aside I'd never finish it. :'(
-
That sounds familiar
-
Wonderful additions to your collection, and terrain is looking like a treat as well. How much more to do yet before moving to a new project?
-

Too much lol
I have about; 30 French figures, 10 Richards body guard, 24 Merry Men, 15 Sherifs Men and a few more peasant types which could be either villagers or Castle inhabitants. Oh and another 4 Black Knights. ::)
I have just made a start on some furniture for the Castle interior. I'm not bored with doing this yet but am doing The Black Dragon Tong on the side as I want to play IHMN.
-
Great thread. I've glanced at it many times, not sure I've given it proper praise. lol

It certainly is!

I like how you have based all the items individually as well, more possibilities.
Clever.
8)

looks great... :)
-
Thanks, I based them individually so they can be moved to create space, and can also be used in an upcoming Pirate game project.

I have just completed another unit. These are mounted Merry Men made from the old GW Bretonian Squires mounted on Renegade horses. I forgot to order the shield decals in time so will do them later.

Thanks for all medieval inspiration Dan !!!

I just discovered your thread, this is wonderful !
As a fan of sceneries, I love your castle, all the details, inside, outside !
Nothing much to say, keep going !
-
Ooh! Those are really nicely done. :-*
-
The new additions look the part Dan :)
What sort of decals as I think they don't look too bad plain.
cheers
James
-
Thanks guy's, nice to know its still interesting for other people.
Jim, the Decals arrived the Day after I posted the photos as luck would have it. They are VVV white Wolf Heads, just like in the book Outlaw.
-
I added some decals to the riders shields and also have painted the foot versions of the riders.

I think that I need to do some Castle defenders just to even out the two sides next. I'd really like to start an Entourage for Richard though as I bought the 1st Corp camp followers and a tent.
-
Glad to see you are sticking with this project. ;D
Mine has floundered somewhat in recent months :'(
-
I like the wolf's head decals...
Hmmm. Starks... ::)
Mine has floundered somewhat in recent months :'(
Martians, gladiators, orcs (::) FFS) - so many competing priorities... ;)
-
Thanks I am finding it hard going sticking to my plans to finish this. Every batch I do I seem to paint a colour wrong and then have to go back and redo something. This time around it was the Sherwood Green and the boots that needed repainting. ::) Even though I have a recipe written down I just grab paints and get stuck in >:(
-
A really great project :-*
-
Outstanding, as always! :-*
-
Superb! Very lively looking table, I also like the houses with the open sides, that is a nice idea.
-
Those foot archers are fabulous, and the decals on the shields of the riders really make them stand out. Great work.
-
are those GW figures?
this really has me torn between doing Robin Hood vs goblins or King Arthur vs goblins
-

The foot and mounted figures are GW from the 90's. The Horses are Renegade.

Beautiful Dan. Lovely subtle colour scheme. I like it :)
-
This project just gets better every time I see it - may I suggest you try the old Avalon Hill board game Robin Hood as I found it made a useful mechanism for adding a campaign dimension to one's tabletop games.
-
And it continues :)
Like the colour scheme 8)
You do know that you'll have to get the castle out again don't you ;)
cheers
James
-
Great stuff. Glad to see the project continuing :)

Excellent figures with a very subdued pallette. Love the Stag design on the shields.

Thanks guys high praise indeed but remember the saying"practise makes perfect?". I have been practising on this project for years. lol

This is just getting better and better - I really like the subtle colour scheme on this latest batch of minis. Thanks for sharing.

Nearly missed the castle guard update, like the muted tones on the colour scheme.

Yup - those colours work a treat! :-*

Threadsurrectiion warning!
While contemplating which of my smaller projects to try and fit into my over-busy modeling list for the year, I went looking for Robin Hood inspiration and found this thread. Well worth bringing back to the top. Chock full of ideas to inspire me. Sure, I will be doing mine in 15 mm but still many cool ideas. And, yes, some of the stuff here can be found in 15 mm!
So, great job to the OP (I commented early on but hadn't paid a return visit).
-
Beautiful project. Nice to see what these crusader figures look like painted.
