This sounds suspiciously like there will be pictures of British and Prussians thrashing each other about in your astonishing terrain collection.

Now, that is a prospect to look forward to!

That palace is frickin´ amazing.

Er, isn't that the Prime Minister's job? Has there been an ultra-Monarchist coup d'etat, as well as all this other business?  :)

Great scene. I love the big building.

Love the John Brown Conversion. Wish that I had thought of him.

What an amazing building! I am very impressed. Is that Brigadier General Flashman at her left hand? I don't think that he was overly fond of Chancelor Bismark....

I also like the well armed highlander protecting  Her Majesty.  "Mr Brown" I presume.

Maybe HM and Gladstone has had another of their little tiffs and the PM is sulking somewhere.

Fantabulous! Perhaps the Queen declared war whilst Gladstone was too busy dealing with a prostitute.

Do the Brits hope that by only declaring war on Prussia, they won't have to fight the other states of the Deutsches Kaiserreich?

Good luck with that!

Of course not, we will take them all on, thats why the fighting will end up in Picadilly circus. Thanks Driscoles

When I get around to painting the Bavarians, Westaphalians etc the might of the German confederation will become too much for the British Empire and the fortress isle of Britain will be breached :o

Errm, we Westphalians have been prussians since 1815, in parts since 1614 (when Prussia still was called Brandenburg). In the better parts, of course :D

Throwing us together with bavarians is like calling a scotsman a Cockney.

A real-life 1881 war is an interesting proposition, and it's hard to see how it would be fought. There's no way the tiny British Army could face Germany on the continent on its own, and at that stage the German Navy would have no chance against the RN, so they wouldn't be able to invade England. If either side tries to venture into the other's dominant sphere (land or sea) there's going to be something of a disaster in store for somebody.

Also the Germans didn't really have any overseas possessions yet, so there wouldn't be a colonial proxy war either.

It would all revert to them pulling rude faces at one another across the North Sea!

Great idea for a VSF campaign, though.

I always thought a Westfalia was a camper van!  :)

Yes, and the factory has been around 25km from here.

You're right, of course, with the problems of a would-be-war in 1881. It would have ended in a sea blockade, and perhaps an british attempt on Hamburg. On the other hand the frenchies wouldn't have missed the possibility. I guess it woould have ended in WW1 with different frontlines - the three Emperors against France, Britain and the turks, perhabs the austrians switching sides.

Glad you steered clear of painting a crimson goatee, though

Just mentioning Billy Connolly reminds me of his cameo appearance as "Hawkeye MacGillicuddy" in the film Bullshot. That scene still makes me laugh :)

The real John Brown was a ghillie who became Queen Victoria's personal servant after the Death of Prince Albert. The two struck up quite a close relationship, and he helped her somewhat to overcome the grief she was stricken with.

There were rumours of them ...  well, you can imagine.

All this is depicted in the film "Mrs Brown" with Judi Dench and Billy Connolly. The stuff about him being an assassin is a bit of VSF gamer fun.

Longer for the English maybe 1066, 1415 for the Welsh. It's the Scots who kept their kings longest.

That guy with the Prussian? blue coat in the background, could that be a bomb in the bag?

Everyone in UK is descended from someone who came from elsewhere originally - it's just a question of time.

Being of ‘British blood’ thankfully means being born of British parents (a legal definition) and avoids discredited theories on eugenics.

Most Brits come from the Basque region of Spain. Considering the number of non-Brits in living history for my family I take the view that a man born in Hackney is from Hackney.

Did the Scots keep their Kings? The Kings were Scots weren't they? Whilst the majority of their subjects were Picts. And lets not even think about Lowland/Highland or the men on the Marches.

Actually, most Brits have always been here, they've just changed their identity to fit in with each new lot of invaders.

They dug up some preserved prehistoric chap in Devon or somewhere a while back, DNA-tested him, and then DNA tested all the locals near where he was found. Some of said locals were found to be relations of his!

So we're most of us not Normans,  Anglo-Saxons, Romans or even Celts. We're all from some nameless prehistoric tribe!

Not even remotely true I'm afraid. I think this idea came about when people tried to decide where the Celtic languages came from. Only later did they understand the Celts spread from Hallstat in Germany into West Europe and the Middle East, possibly reaching Western China. The Basques are a Celtic people, along with the Galicians and Asturians in Spain. And by Celt I mean the culture, not a distinct racial group.

The 'Scots', an Irish tribe landing in Dalriata, had Welsh, Irish, Pictish and Viking subjects. These are the ancestors of the modern Scots.
