Title: New GW Game next Saturday
Post by: joroas on September 11, 2011, 05:19:27 PM
Whilst buying a pot of paint today, one of the boyz bounced over and asked if I'd heard about the new secret game out next weekend.  He couldn't/wouldn't tell me what it was, so I wheedled out:

A stand alone game like Space Hulk.
Fantasy
About £50/60
Something about John Blanche and pirates.

Sounds intriguing.  Any other info out there?  ???

Rumors at "Brückenkopf Online" say it should/could be a "Manowar" like game.

I collected WHQ on EBay last year and found all the magazines/cards on various sites.

I will assume that this is way too expensive to retool and support.

A stand alone, short run game is the only thing I can see them producing now.

There's quite a big grumpy thread on Dakka Dakka about it as well.

Seems to be four 'nations', Empire, Elves, Orcs and Vampire counts and it would appear (according to the rumours) that it will be warmaster scale and not Man-o-War scale.

I'm in two minds about this one, as a long term Man-o-War fan I'm hoping that it use the same rule types and give the same amount of fun but on the same token there won't be any support for it what-so-ever and once it's gone, it's gone  :-[

On a slightly different note, I saw a copy of the newest version of Space Hulk going on the bring and buy at Colours for £100  :o

cheers

They might do this once a year with 'Quest', 'Battlefleet Gothic', etc

Trolls in the Pantry would be good  lol

I could cope, nicely, with an annual infusion of reto games, that only cost the initial outlay.

Obviously poor sales, but they did not give it much of a chance?

Not sure about that.  There were two boxed add-ons and fleets for all, even sea monsters.  So it was well-supported.  But, when you've bought your fleets there is nothing else to buy.  So no long-term sales like a 3000 point army with changing codexes and new figures.

I'm hoping it is man o war as I never managed to get hold of it first time round and it was tremendous fun, as for finding the money for it, does anyone want to buy a liver, I don't need both of them.

As John says, there is no perpetual market and it was mainly the older players that liked it and therefore, a thoughtful budget to spend on it  :(

I still play it now though (but not as often as I would like)  :) and I still have a fair few different ship types that we came up with. Nothing crazy, just different sizes and classes, merchant men also.

cheers

Been reading up on this and think I'll wait to see what is actually in the box.

I don't think it's going to be as big as Space Hulk was, ignoring the people panic buying in case they don't get one.

Picked this snippet up:

Quote
It IS Dread Fleet - Warhammer naval game of a fleet of ships from the various races of good vs. the Vampire Pirate of Sartosa and his allies.

There is a "Wanted" poster teaser in the current issue of WD.

I've seen blurry shots of the ships taken in Bugman's and they look pretty damn cool

Shops won't have it until Saturday for preorders.

Theres a couple of nice looking posters up, but the "we won't tell you anything until we ask for your money" thing isn't really selling the game to me.

John Blanche's name being attached doesn't help for me.

I can't stand his style when it comes to drawing people.

Now don't get me wrong his artwork for Battlefleet Gothic was stunning he seemed to be in his element drawing big ships with lots of sensor masts and stuff, but when he draws people/creatures it just all goes wrong for me.

Of course maybe he has improved since his horrific drawings in the Inquisitor rulebook and the likes of Libre Chaotica which were red and brass splattered scribbles.

I could be tempted to get a few copies seeing as I let Space Hulk pass me by (pushing towards the £200 price mark on some Ebay auctions I see!).

I spoke to a GW staffer last night about this - I trust him as I've known him for at least eight years.  He inferred that this game is going to get further support after release - that other stuff will be issued for it after it's out.  He might be wrong about it but I don't think he was lying as we know each other too well.  I might be tempted with the game if there was additional releases.

Space Hulk is a good game but expansions would have made it longer lasting - I've not played it at all after the first couple of months since it was released.

That would be a novelty, they seem to have nothing on the shelves except for their two core games.  A pity as their other games needed support.

Same here. We played it solidly for about two months but then got bored.

Right, a new editon of Mordheim would make me happy.

Not a new edition. I'd hate to think what they'd do to the rules. A re-release would be good but please don't let them mess with the minis.  lol

I used to love Man-O-War. Was actually the first GW game I ever got. My dad bought me it 'cos it was cheaper than their other boxed games at the time lol. The mini's for it were great too.

Being mainly painter and collector I don’t care much about rules :)

Well just think of all the amazing Necromunda models they binned and replaced with rather poor ones when they re-released it as Necromunda: Underhive.

That said the current Mordheim models aren't so easy to get hold of and as is the norm for GW cost a bomb for what they are so who knows which situation could be better if any.

"I spoke to a GW staffer last night about this ... He inferred that this game is going to get further support after release..."

The rumor mill is mostly churning up "one-time release", but it could of course be dead wrong.  I hope the staffer you spoke to is correct!

I would love to see them re-release the missing Mordheim models.  Some of the gaps are particularly weird, like the Sisters of Sigmar's auger - a hero, so everyone needs her... and all of the rest of the models are still available.
Title: Re: New GW Game next Saturday
Post by: Prof.Witchheimer on September 16, 2011, 07:58:56 AM
I still remember the GW talking about Mordheim immediately after the official release, it did sound exactly like that - “will support, will be forever and so on”. Now we know what the result looks like. So I guess the new game would meet the same destiny. Deportation to Specialist Games..

Well, I dont like VanGogh, but I cant deny that he is a world renowned and influential artist!

As for people who spend £100 on a game and then play it for 2 months, shame on you! I still play the old version of space hulk! The models in the new one were really nice, how come they dont make more models like those? I know plenty of people who paffed the cash on the game, but dont deserve it! WHat a waste.

Anyway, the new game will have some nice and/or weird models, so maybe its worth it? Hell, its probably worth buying then hording.....

But we know that GW is about business first, and if a certain game doesn't reach a certain sales / revenue level it will not be continued. It's just about numbers. It just isn't enough if a couple of thousand gamers around the world like the game. Why should Mordheim be released again? It has all the rules needed and there's plenty of figures to use in whatever scale we want. That same goes for necromunda. I think it's the rules that matter the most, since if they already work why remake them? Just choose figures from other manufacturers.

I'd like to see a necromunda redo for the scenery, if nothing else.

That, and I want the OLD Ratskin and Redemptionist models back! The newer ones are rubbish.

Actually I don’t need any new rules, I play way too rarely. I’m collecting Mordheim miniatures, all of them and unfortunately a lot of them are OOP and so it’s getting a very expensive matter. Re-release would give me the opportunity to get closed all my Mordheim collection gaps. And I don’t mind at all if they would bring out some new models, not because I need them, I’ve got enough, I’m even producing some with our LAM Bruegelburg range. Just for only collecting reason, so that my collection would  also continue to grow :) Apart from that it would be nice to have  a new shiny Mordheim book, always loved the pics :)

Ah.  I'm less interested in it after watching the teaser.

I'd agree with you on that.
Especially that bit about the steam hammer.
I've no objection to fantasy, and nothing against fantasy ships.
Provided they look as though they could actually float, the fantasy is supposed to be the crew, or method of propulsion, not their seaworthiness, and some of the earlier MoW stuff looked less stable than a cross between the Mary Rose and the Vasa.

DreadfleetFor two bleak decades the Undead reavers of Count Noctilus have plagued the oceans of the world. After each raid, the Dreadfleet disappears into its lair as quickly and silently as it appeared, far from the reach of Man. And yet there remains hope. Captain Jaego Roth of the Heldenhammer has vowed to hunt down and destroy Count Noctilus and his Undead captains once and for all. With him sail the most notorious and cunning of the pirate lords of Sartosa, each borne to battle upon a giant warship bristling with cannons, organ guns and bolt throwers. At the stroke of midnight on Geheimnisnacht, most forsaken of nights, the Heldenhammer and her companions sail into the realm of undeath known as the Galleon's Graveyard. One by one, Count Noctilus and his vile allies move in to stop them.

Dreadfleet is a boxed game for two (or more) players that includes everything you need to make war on the turbulent seas of the Warhammer world. At your command are two fleets of ships - the Dreadfleet led by the Vampire Count Noctilus, aboard his gargantuan sea-hulk the Bloody Reaver; and the Grand Alliance commanded by the Pirate Captain Jaego Roth, who recently stole the Heldenhammer - the pride of the Imperial Fleet, and one of the largest galleons to ever sail the high seas.

As your ships engage in furious battle, it's down to you, the fleet captain, to make important split-second decisions. Do you bring all guns to bear on the closest enemy warship, or do you sail into position for a furious broadside? What happens when the warship catches fire, or worse, the powder kegs ignite? Exactly how much punishment can your warship take before it sinks without a trace? Are those Undead seagulls or flying piranha fish? And, when all else fails, do you have the courage to ram your foe, board their ship, and engage them in a duel to the death?

I bought it. I think that it's not even too expensive since you get good guality gaming mat, tons of cards, nice ships, islands etc. I think the 90e price is decent. I also have Man o war so if I don't like the game too much, I will try to use as much as possible from it in my MoW  games. TBH it would have been better to have full fleets from both sides and not a mixed fleet :/

I've just checked the web. $135.00 CDN :o :o
Hmm...10 ships+bases, 9 auxiliaries, 7 islands, 3 sea monsters, 5 ship wrecks + treasure tokens. 49 pieces of plastic, a rule book, gaming accessories and 138 cards.

Dreadfleet has the makings of an interesting game as numerous Warhammer races are represented. As it appears to be just a one off I think I'm out. That and the price.

Some comparable starter sets:
Space Hulk was around $100.00
Island of Blood & Assault on Black Reach are $118.75 CDN
Mines of Moria is $99.00 CDN
And these sets are chalk-full of miniatures...

Interesting elemantal ship there

For my money the uncharted sea stuff looks slightly better (maybe chaeper too?)

Meh. Bring it down to £50 and maybe we'll talk. Emphasis on maybe.

I like the weird skaven thing and the squid-like submarine thing though.

Guess they'll be on e-Bay in a couple of weeks.

For a board game the maximum price I'm willing to pay is also around the £50 or €60 mark! Pitty as I really liked the look of the game  :(

OK so no support later? Can a game with 1 ships really have that much appeal?

Not sure I'm understanding the cost arguments...

How much does a battle mat from mat-o-war normally set you back? HJow much are the uncharted seas ships and how much would a full colour rulebook normally cost you?

£70 for an all inclusive miniatures game is really good in my eyes...

Not being a pro GW`er by far, with this I agree completely, and was also the argument I put down vs the price complaints on the TSA forum.

I'm seriously tempted by this one, and I haven't bought any GW games in a really long time.

I agree as well. If the game mat is half as good as it looks, I would love to have one. Plus there is quite some terrain, sea creatures and ship wrecks, etc.

So taking all into account I think the price is worth it. I will still wait for the parts to pop up in some bitz store, because I only need the terrain, 2-3 ships and perhaps the mat.

Why release one ship from each race? Seems to me its destruction derby on the high seas.

The blurb suggests that there are two teams of pirates, thye are not the same race, though.

Same thing here...
But finally the overload of skulls prevents me buying this...

Like the look of some ships - although others are simply too top heavy for my taste, maybe it's because I live on the coast and know how rough the sea gets, but half of the ships look like they are designed to capsize, although since they are plastic kits it might be feasible to convert them.

Not sure about the terrain either. How many skull islands does a person want.
Certainly not at this time of year, Poundland is full of cheap plastic skulls (in assorted sizes) that can be quickly glued onto a CD for a skull island. So that's a no vote on the terrain.

The ship bases look good though. Only for the warships and not the auxilliaries?

The last gaming mat I bought was £35.

Not really interested in the rules, so that £70 looks a bit steep to me.

Okay I have got my hands on a copy, and all I can say is wow :o
The box is very full and the plastics are really nice, The sprues look well planned out and full of bits and some interesting little bits like the flying dragon and either dwarf airship or sub. the detail is equal to dystopian wars.
The mat is material and feels a bit like silk but im sure it isn't ;D the book is a strange size and lots of cards, the islands are the first sprue you will come to very nice lots of little detail and should work with dystopian and uncharted sea.
All in all a nice set a bit expensive maybe but you do get loads for your money, Not realistic maybe but it is unashamedly fantasy and does look cool, It is GW showing that they can still make good model

Saw this on TTGN this morning - Sails of Glory (http://www.tabletopgamingnews.com/2011/09/29/50939/)

Granted, it's not until summer 2012, but I wonder if the ships will match size-wise.

For those who've seen the DreadFleet game, any estimate on the scale of the pieces?. Sails of Glory are going for 1:1200, which matches the Langton (http://www.rodlangton.com/index.html) pieces. It would be nice if GW was the same, but history suggests otherwise  :'(

Gw gave me the idea that it was too small for epic, nearer 6mm, so 1/300?

Must be hard to see all those young people have kids, age, go grey, forget they already have troops for that game and increase their figure size from 10mm to 28mm because they can't see them.   :'(

I'll let you know if it happens to me.  :o

Got my copy today.  You can say what you like about GW policies and practices but when it comes down to it, they really have upped the ante on plastic miniatures.  The details on the models really have to be seen to be appreciated, the mat is beautiful and the rulebook and cards are first class productions.  No idea how it'll play but I'll definitely give them high marks for presentation.

Yes, I love the production value, as I said, the cloth sold it it by itself, you get a hell of a lot for your money, a complete game in a box with all you need.  :D

yesterday I got my copy, oh boy!
Really great value for the price, big box full of stuff to the top, great detailed models, full color rulebook with nice art, awesome print on the cloth mat, really exciting.
It was a really long time since last time i felt the same enthousiasm opening a GW product, mmm... really long indeed.
Maybe the rules are a turd, but the whole product first impression is awesome.
If the game proves to be crap still is a good investment to recicle the content for my ManoWar games

I can't wait to start having mates round for games of this! I've watched a couple of games in store and it's seemed nice and fluid, simple to remember and fun to play!  :D
