Can't stop adding to the collection when I see something nice:
Finally a pictorial update. Some new Wargames Foundry Darkest Africa types to double as Indian tribesmen. Also 40 new Perry Miniatures Ansar/Arabs painted up as Moslem insurgents. Will take some shots of the new Sikhs soon, forgot to upload them.

On to the Zulu War next, reckon around a month's worth of work to do.
-
One can't have enough natives.
Like how you painted them.
Foundry Dark Africa figures are so nice, love painting them.
-
Jon, you are a painting beast, can't wait to see how the game has evolved since I saw it in June. Love the Mutiny!

Cheers Mike, I've done a new Punjab Irregular Force to add to the Brits - four units of 10 Sikhs plus five officers, two Anglo-Indian drummers and a standard bearer. I've got a bunch of new rebel cavalry to paint up, then plan to add some more tribal types. Hoping to get started on the Lucknow Residency soon and bunch of boats. Lots more terrain bits and pieces too.
In the meantime, I'm making some buildings for Tom (Spanish style white plastered with red tile roof) to be based on 12" squares. The next big job is to finally finish off the Zulu War collection, that'll leave the post Christmas period free to concentrate on making pirate ships!
-
Thanks Marine, really loved painting these figures, the Foundry ones are particularly nice. Love this new range of figures which has lots of potential:

Nice to see how useful the Ansar are.
-
Very useful. Mind you, the sprues aren't exactly generous in terms of arm options. There's not enough for you not to have musket armed men for example. Suppose you could cut the muskets out of the hands if you really wanted.
-
New additions to the Indian Mutiny collection. Keep adding to this lot - can't stop painting them I love the period so much! More to come.

Wargames Foundry, Old Glory and QT figures - officers for the new Punjabis. Tents, well and fires by Italeri - nice kits.

A second shot of the officers and drummers. Stanard bearer by Old Glory. Flag is speculative, but looks right.

Boy you have been busy.
Like the Red Wing figures.
But again I like the Cav, and the camp also.
Hey, I like them all.
What rules are you planning to use?
-
Nicw work. Is it just me but does those guys have seriosly big heads? :o
-
Thanks Marine and Joroas. I like the Red Wing figures too, but they do have big heads.
Have written my own set for the Indian Mutiny which we used for the first season. By June 2012 when they get their next outing on the table we'll be using Black Powder.
-
Nice work old boy

Indian Mutiny Update
YOU MEAN THEY'RE AT IT AGAIN?
Just kidding. Very nice figs.
-
Some cute new Minifigs with a couple of Essex for the collection. Bought these painted, but had to start from scratch again.

More in a week or two - 60 new British including a Naval Brigade unit, a rocket battery, a large elephant drawn artillery platform, forty more tribesmen and a 160 Perry tribals.

fascinating Blog Jon, probably the most productive painter of wargames figures
i have ever seen.............!!

With all the new figures, will we be seeing a battle report soon.
Also what rules are you going to play? ;D
-
Thanks Ged! September to May is the real painting period for me each year now. I'm against the clock getting the new periods and games together for the next season over in Crete.
Now working on pirates and will be buying the ships early in the new year.
Quite fancy making a gunboat for the Indian Mutiny, could be fun.
-
Marine - Black Powder - currently working on rule adaptations for the set. No games until June when the first group of wargamers come over to Crete and play IM for two days after a two day pirate game.
-
Even more very nice figs!
Question, though. How historical would a unit wearing green turbans be? I know that, in some versions of Islam, only a direct descendant of the Prophet can wear a green turban.
-
There were certainly Moslem insurgents in the mutiny - there must have been formed units too.
New long range rockets for the British, still have to paint the crews. Figure in the second shot for scale.

There was at lkeast one muslim unit that wore green sashes IIRC.

Any of the numerous units of Ghazi would.
-
Thanks all - Ghazi was the word I was looking for. It wasn't just a Hindu revolt. Interesting side note is that the bulk of the mutineer artillery men were Moslem too, they considered themselves to be a cut above in that profession.
-
love the Rockets Jon :)

Cheers Ged, got to get the crews done, so here's the plan:
Working on 20 Rifle Brigade for the Indian Mutiny at the moment. Have finished the first 11, actually there are 21 in the unit, with an additional officer. Interesting colour scheme according to John French. Some still had their rifle green trousers and jackets, but most had a mix of white, grey and some had lavender shirts. All of the equipment was black of course with black caps. Makes for an interesting unit.
Next up will be the crews for the bombardment rockets, then the Naval Brigade and another British regular regiment, it will probably be the Highland unit (can't remember offhand which one it was) that was supposed to be going to China and got pulled into the Indian Mutiny - they don't have kilts, they were dressed like regular infantry.
In the new year, plan to get another 180 Perry's done for more rebellious mob types, might also get some more rebel horse.
When I get my electric fretsaw in the new year I'll be making a temple or two, the Lucknow residency and some other buildings for the new campaign style games we'll be running next summer.
-

Too right Jon! Because of the newer recruiting regulations each unit had a mix of castes and religions; Hindus, Rajputs, Muslims, Sikhs, Pathans, and gasp...even Christians! (mostly Eurasian Musicians) could all be found in the ranks; most castes were represented as well, and this was a large part of the friction within the army before the Mutiny. Although in the Bengal Army the Brahmins continued to dominate the Infantry. Muslims tended to dominate in the Artillery, and to a lesser degree the Cavalry (which was more the domain of the Rajputs).
-
Sepoy1857 - think a lot of people forget what a mix of cultures and religions were involved in the rebellion. The interesting thing is that there was no consistency in terms of who revolted and who did not. Mind you, Britain would almost certainly have lost India if it hadn't been for the Sikhs for example.
-
Two new British regiments for the mutiny, two bombard rockets now with their crews and four new smaller rocket launchers for the mutineers:

Beautiful minis. Bravo! One thing though, and bear in mind my knowledge of history is not as great as some here. They look like Legionnaires! At least, that is what I would have thought if I'd just seen them sitting on the table. Was this a standard British uniform of the period?
-
Good looking troops.Could you please to me which company makes the rockets?
Thanks.

Indeed! I've based mine on Nicholson's Flying Column at the seige of Dehli. In reality an opportunity to combine my Piffers and Hill Tribes in one force :D
-
Marine - I think they are Wargames Foundry from their Sikh Wars range. Not sure whether they still make them. Can't see them on their website - you could ring them and ask if they are available.

Sorry all, its been ages, so here is a big update:
Thought it was time for a bit of an update - mainly terrain items, but also a new paddle steamer:
A new shop selling fruit and rugs, like you do.
A little house.
Generic scratchbuilt boats, will probably use them for the French and Indian Wars too. They are designed to take 5 soldiers.
But this is what I really wanted them for, a bridge of boats.
Generic wooden stockade, will use this for the French and Indian Wars too.

This is a Redoubt model. Its huge, but I reckon it will look great steaming up a river to extract civilians or landing a mix of RN and Gurkhas behind the rebel lines.

sterling work Jon..........love the hand made boats
always of interest

Thanks lads, there'll be an article on how to make the little boats in a future issue of Battlegames.
I'm a little worried about getting the paddle steamer over to Crete, the paddle bit is a little fragile.
-
Big update.
Outstanding use of the boats with the bridge.
Nice buildings, like them.
-
Very nice work Jon!
-
Thank you, next big job is some iconic buildings for the Indian Mutiny - plan to refight some of the big sieges and relief column actions.
-
Yeah there's a lot of those - just Lucknow could keep someone busy for a lifetime!
-
Love the boat Jon. Of note I just started to read the Alex Sheridan series of novels- 1st Crimea, then 4 books in the Mutiny. More political and less action oriented than others, but enjoyable.

-
Thanks Mike, not read them. I've written a kids novel revolving around the Indian Mutiny - must try and find a publisher for it!
