Title: Japanese troops for the Russo Japanese War of 1904-1905, 28mm
Post by: Maichus on October 06, 2011, 01:19:02 PM
Hi guys,

Here's my own private miniature venture.    ;)

Japanese troops for the Russo Japanese War of 1904-1905. The first batch miniatures are meant to depict charging soldiers in the M1904 khaki uniform.

The guilty parties are the very talented Mr. Paul Hicks and the great guys at Griffin Moulds.
Last but not least the equally talented Mr. Simon Bradley is responsible for the great painted examples.

Command set charging (medical orderly, officer, NCO and casualty)

Troopers charging with bedrolls

Troopers charging without bedrolls

Future plans include a three man HMG team, four skirmishing/advancing and four firing/loading soldiers + an according command set. All in the M1904 uniform.

If you'd like to get some, I'm selling surplus castings at 7.50 Euros per set of four (4) miniatures and also a 'group deal' set consisting of one command set and four trooper sets of your choice (that's twenty miniatures all together) for 35.- Euros (+ the respective postage at cost, I live in Germany for the matter). (Please note that all miniatures are supplied UNPAINTED.)

Please send any orders to the following e-mail address, so it doesn't get mixed up:  tsuba-miniatures@gmx.de

Payment via PayPal please.

All comments welcome, of course, so do your worst.  ;D

PS: Please feel free to post this on other forums and help spread the word.  ;)

No kidding  :)

It's taking longer due to a few money issues  ::)

Mine are mainly for the Boxer Rebellion but can be used for early Russo-Japanese war. Please don't let this stop you though, it's always good to see the period bring represented  :)

I hope/plan to also get some Russians done after the next batch of Japanese (the above mentioned sets). The problem is, that Paul is very busy (although he doesn't seem to sleep at all, considering his output  o_o). But they are on the list.  ;)

Shouldn't be a problem  :) Even the old 1886model uniform could have still been in use but I believe that after 1922 puttees were introduced to the khaki uniform but the take over wasn't wide spread.

In 1906 the blue material was still being used for new uniforms just because of a backlog of it.

You thinking BoB?

They are gorgeous, and I will send the link to our local guy who loves Japanese minis.

The red cross makes me curious, is that historical?  I have never before seen any Japanese wearing a red cross.

I believe the red cross was introduced when the Japanese went to the world getting as much from it as possible (they sent people everywhere) and certainly during the Boxer Rebellion they were used in the field (I've seen a very poor photo in an Osaka museum many years ago before the interest in the period took hold).

So I can only assume that they were used in the field in the Russo-Japanese war.

I am pretty sure I have a picture from the RJW showing an armband in the field but is on the blue winter uniform.

As for Chinese Warlord / Back of Beyond I certainly intend using these, having another use was one of the reasons I started painting mine in khaki.(there aren't that many buttons for the more anal amongst us to count anyway ;D)

Really for interwar, they need to have the crown lowered and enlarged in circumference (easy enough with a bit of puttee). Carving puttees on every figure might be a bit more exacting.

For anyone interested in this period may I suggest to you the following book:

Japanese Military Uniforms 1841-1929 by Ritta Nakanishi.

Covers cavalry, equipment, rifles in use, machine guns and much more.

Covers all services and shows a medic with red cross arm band.

In addition, I've two soft cover books in Japanese that cover the Russo-Japanese War with both colour and B&W illustrations. These books between them cover artillery fortifications, artillery, machine guns, rifles, grenades and mortars from both sides.

The collection of Russo-Japanese War Weapon/all battles is one of the books that has an English sub title.

Once more I've a B&W illustration of a Japanese medic in winter garb wearing his red cross arm band.

All soft cover books can be found if you search hard enough.

Cheers,

Helen

Got 'em all and they are great  :)

The Japanese way of producing books like these is fantastic, even if you don't read Japanese there are plenty of pictures and diagrams that are very self explanatory.

The publisher for the Russo-Japanese war books is Gakken (I think those are the ones you are on about Helen).

Hi James, yes gakken, plus do you have the Seibdo Mook soft cover book too which compliments the former book?

Just looking through the Seibdo Mook book I came across another B&W photo of a  Japanese first aid station with a number of Japanese medics with their red cross arm bands and panniers also so marked.

Cheers,

Helen

Regarding comparison with Redoubt, I would say that these are a tad smaller than the Redoubt Japanese but nothing that will prevent me from having them in the same unit

Has there been any further progress to the range, I am hoping to see Japanese troops in winter garb and also wonder if the Russians are further advanced..?

Kind regards,

Hello Geoff,

Thank you for your interest!

The next sets (three for the Japanese and two for the Russians) are just about finished and I hope to have some photos of the greens to show in the next days. These will all be wearing summer garb, though.

Winter garb clad soldiers are an my long to-do/wish list but only after a lot more miniatures for the summer battles have been done.

Cheers,
Markus
Title: NEW GREENS on P. 4: Japanese troops for the RJW 1904-1905, 28mm
Post by: Maichus on April 06, 2012, 03:51:31 PM
Here are the greens of the first two of the new sets (more photos to follow after Eastern  ;)):

One set is made up of soldiers carrying bedrolls and gassai-bukuros to fit in with the advancing troopers (set RJ-J04) while their comrades in the second set are lighter equipped without these pieces of kit for greater variety.

So, it's up to you to either mix and match or use your prefered version.

I hope you don't mind but having finished my first batch of your excellent Russo Japanese range, I thought I would post them to this thread.
I can't hope to match the painting on your own figures, but am pleased with the results so far.

Looking forward to your next releases in March.

Proof that they are great castings when you see excellent results from more than just the 'official' painter.
