wow,very nice :o
-
Excellent painting.
Like the photo of them about ready to go at it.

:-* :-*
Dammit man! Now I want some Gladiators myself....and with the Warhammer Historical rules on sale...now may be the time!
Very nice work on those!

Another pair for my Gladiator game, also made a "giant barbarian" conversion out of a Reaper Ghoul which will serve as a "boss fight".

Converted from a Reaper Miniatures "Ghast" he will serve as a tough "boss fight" champion for my WH:H Gladiator campaign.

Theokles from Spartacus blood and sand! Great paintjob!
-
Really nice miniatures and great report.
Are the Crusader gladiators compatible with Foundry ones ?
-
Not sure, I only bought stuff from Crusader since this was my first time buying Gladiators and I have no idea how well different ranges blend. I did however notice that some of the Crusader packs are slightly smaller in size than the rest. The Maximus blister as well as the condemned men being slightly smaller.
-
From CrusaderMiniatures, slightly smaller than the rest of the range though for some reason. I added the shield because he looked a bit plain without one.

Anatoli,
Damm, you are making it harder and harder not to dig out my unpainted gladiators and start painting.
Have all the Foundry packs plus a few others.
Love the Spaniard.
-
Thanks, this project fits me quite well at the moment due to the lack of painting time. Every model finished is actually worth something which is quite rare even in skirmish games :)
-
Great stuff, I used to play a PS2 gladiator fantasy game and that big chap comes striaght out form the game :-*
-
A very light class Gladiator, the Diamachaerus is fighting with dual Gladius swords. Twice the attacks and better initiative value than most other Gladiators his main tradeoff is lack of decent armor.

Some nice figures there, Anatoli!
The Reaper Ghast is my favourite.
I cant help thinking some of them would be improved by replacing their legs for some larger scale limbs.
This guy for example;
and this one;
are both great from the waist up, but look very out of proportion below that.
Just my two penneth..........
-
All your gladiators are nicely painted but I agree that Crusader gladiators seem to be a bit short on legs.
Your ghast is amazing : a fantastic idea and a very good conversion. I might steal your idea.
-
Thanks, go ahead, that is the main reason with miniature forums I think - to inspire and be inspired :)
Last cleaned and undercoated model I had left to paint, will start on the next batch soon - with ranged Gladiators having priority so I can have more dynamic team fights :-)

Started painting up the second batch of Gladiators, giving priority to the ranged weapon specialists since that will bring a completely new element to the arena fighting.
So here's the quick footed dart throwing Gaetulian, probably the best ranged weapon specialist if you look to weapon damage output alone - though don't expect him to last more than 2 seconds against a real close combat specialist.

Love this project of yours!
Please keep us updated both on your progresses both mini and game rules wise!
:)
-
Thanks, I most definitely will :)
-
Yes a very nice project. I have a number of Gladiators myself. Just wondering what rules do you use?
-
both great from the waist up, but look very out of proportion below that.
Maybe they could be improved by swapping the lower torso/legs with some from standard Roman legionaires, for instance?
(I don't think it should be done now, after painting, it is just a thought for when somebody really wants those characters, but might not want the minis because of the proportions).
-
@ HerbyF, I use the Warhammer Historical "Gladiator" ruleset. With a bit of houserule tweaks applied to make it more interesting and dynamic.
Here's a Velite. In terms of rules this Gladiator is close to the Gaetulian. Though the weapon has shorter throwing distance, and is not as hard hitting. It can however be used in close combat as opposed to the darts which can only be thrown.
Both the Javelin and Dart projectiles also have the secondary ability of rending shields useless if they fail to wound the Gladiator they hit (if he carries a shield that is).
More pictures on my blog. And as the rules for projectiles and their abilities are scattered in the Gladiator book I also wrote down page numbers where you can find the important rules for the abilities and strengths of these weapons.

The Gladiator rules give you 2 archer options, light and heavy - mentioning that the heavy was probably only used in the eastern empire. Nevertheless, that is the miniature I got in the "ranged weapon specialist" pack from CrusaderMiniatures and I'm not complaining.
Since the bow is the weakest ranged weapon, it is good to have the gladiator armed with it decently protected by chainmail and plate armor. Even though it is not sculpted on the model itself, rule wise he carries a Gladius as a backup weapon. I figure his survival rate will be higher than his half naked dart and javelin throwing buddies.

Again and again you are pulling off some nice paintjobs on these miniatures and making them very characterful.
Nice work.
(I hope you didnt mind my criticism of the proportions previously. That was not a slur on your work, which is very nice. :))
-
Not at all. The critique is in most cases justified, but there are variations within this range that makes me wonder how many sculptors were involced. Some of the gladiators have normal proportions, others don't. Some have leg wrappings that make their legs look a bit oo thick and also perhaps shorter than they really are.
-
Two more very cool gladiators!
How about a family photo in the arena Anatoli?
:)
What are you using as bases?
I see from your blog that those are some sort of plastic chips that you cut in half to make 'em thinner, but apparently missed to understand what was their use in the first place...
-
Sorry for not responding earlier, if you still wonder about the bases they are "tick tack toe" markers pried apart. I bought a bag with 50 such markers for 10SEK so they are the cheapest bases I have ever used :)
-
This thread made me buy Gladiator from WH (together with Trafalgar) at the sale...
If I don't run into some very cheap minis, I'll probably buy a set or two of 1/72 plastics to use with the rules. Funds have to be saved as long as I have not secured a new job.
Something like this: http://www.plasticsoldierreview.com/Review.aspx?id=719
This: http://www.plasticsoldierreview.com/Review.aspx?id=287
Or this: http://www.plasticsoldierreview.com/Review.aspx?id=1258
should have me covered... :)

Finally got the time to get back to painting Gladiators, I hope to paint up the bulk of the remaining models before New Year. Painted up the Scissori this afternoon, and since I was asked earlier about a group picture of my collection of Gladiators I took a couple of such pictures as well. More pictures on my blog: http://anatolisgameroom.blogspot.com/2011/12/gladiator-scissori-and-group-pictures.html

-
Great to see all the figures together.
Fine job of painting.
Can you play with that many Gladiators with your rules?
-
Thanks Marine, yes the Gladiator rules support up to 60 gladiators per side (mass battles). Though the mass battles simplify a few rules to streamline the experience a bit too much for my taste. So I think that I will use something like 6-8 Gladiators per side in 2 teams at the most to keep all the rules and game mechanics used for Gladiator vs Gladiator combat :)
-
The Hoplomachus is a light gladiator armed with a spear, better off supporting friendly models then perhaps being engaged directly in close combat himself die to the relative lack of protection and tiny shield.

One of the cooler Gladiators when it comes to appearance. I have two Thracian miniatures, they both look nice but I decided to paint this up first since he has a dynamic pose while the other have a static stance.

Wicked cool! Love what you've done with the place. :-* :-* :-*

Thanks :), last model for my Gladiator collection to be painted this year, (still have a couple models but they are not cleaned and based so will have to wait for next year).

A barbarian miniature that will be used as a Celtic Riglach warrior for the arena. The profile for this Gladiator can be found in the PDF "Barbarians in the arena" which can be downloaded for free from Warhammer Historical.

Cool stuff man 8) where is Lucy :-* ;)
-
I would gladly add a few miniatures to represent the deceitful female characters from Spartacus if I could find any to represent them well enough. I have the male civilian blister from Crusader, where I think two of the models could be used to represent Batiatus and Solonius as well as some high ranking town official.
-
Two civilian miniatures from Crusader Miniatures I figured I would use as Lannista's.

This is the guy in charge of business and the one every one sucks up to. A lovely sculpt from Crusader miniatures, the one I liked the most out of the civilian blister.

I agree, the arena owner is great.
I like the figure the best of the bunch, set off with a fine paint job.
-
Gets me in the mood for season 2 of Sparticus. Really great project. :-* :-* :-*
-
Anatoli - love that figure as well. His clenched hands do make him look like a money hungry schemer.
With his purple robes he seems to have designs on the throne?
-
I'm in love with these civilians figures. Missed them before.
Very interesting project, Anatoli, I hope you will keep it going as it's a great show and inspiration.
Have you played the rules already? Any comments on them?
What about the terrain, any plans for a sort of arena?
P.S: funny idea to use the Reaper Ghast. I've got the mini as well but I wouldn't dream of using it for Gladiator fights :)
-
@Prof.Witchheimer
Yep tried the rules, they are nice but a bit too simplistic straight out of the book - so I added a few easy tweaks which made them play more like I wanted to and now I think that they work quite well. No big changes, but I wanted the Gladiator training stats come into play more often.
I've built the bottom level of an arena, the fighting pit. I am thinking about adding a VIP booth in one corner and maybe an area for the common spectators as well.
The project is almost complete when it comes to Gladiator miniatures, I have 2 more models I wish to paint up. I may add wild animals later on. Figured I would do some kind of blog contest and give away the remaining 6 Gladiators which would make a good "starter pack". Only problem is I can't come up with a good idea for a contest lol
-
VIP booth would be a very cool addition, don't forget to put the drinks..And maybe girls :)
Sure, you need some "wild life" there, that would round it off.
btw, don't get me wrong, your painting is very nice and I like your style but the figs are a bit too glossy. Did you think of using of matt varnish, I bet your figs would look even better.
-
No matt varnish on the last couple of miniatures, I am aware of the glossy problem and am tearing my hairs out in frustration at the flawed properties of my current matt varnish which does not work at all in the cold (Tamiya TS-80 Flat Clear). I've also abandoned using Army Painter matt varnish since it was messing up my models after half a can had been used. Vallejo brush on matt varnish does not work at all....
And we don't have Testors Dullcote here in Sweden. The situation is increasingly frustrating, and is the reason why I try to avoid dark colors since they tend to have a glossy finish. Recently painted a priest miniatures but it was so glossy that I did not even bother posting it on my blog :?

Well, I know the problem. I'm still using Army Painter Anti-Shine but had to learn to handle with it. It's a bit tricky, distance from the can to the fig and the speed of the moving is quite important. Unfortunately nothing I can tell you in that thread as it's something to show or just for self-learning. Definitely it's necessary to do varnishing in a few quick steps, I usually do 3 or 4 because you may not to spray straight too much varnish at the miniatures (going to be a mess), you need several thin layers of it.
How said it's not easy but it pays off on the long run.
-
This is exactly why I never bothered to varnish my minis... that, and the fact that my painted minis are rarely handled by anyone else but me and a select few friends. lol
-
I still had a couple of Crusader Miniatures gladiators in my lead pile for "Gladiator" and decided to paint some up while waiting for my new brushes to arrive, taking a break from the tiny details of Dreadfleet.
Started out with the blister of slaves, which include Maximus and Juba lookalikes. More pictures on my blog:

Really like your painting syle. Nice clean and crisp style of painting, and the skin colours look great. :-* :-*
I've got a load of Gladiators in a pile waiting to be painted up, really need to start work on them soon.
-
I'm waiting for my Paypal account to "reboot", and I plan to buy a batch of these gorgeous gladiators, and look at tweaking Alternative Armies rules "The Duel".

I have a bunch of these in the Bazaar for sale/trade, if you are interested. My painted ones were already sold.
The Crusader gladiators are really nice sculpts and fun to paint.
