Title: Scrapyard (New item added 30/11)
Post by: Gunbird on November 04, 2011, 08:32:44 PM
Didn't paint anything this week but managed to get 2 more wrecks reasonably matte.

Britannia Beetle:

Tried matting the glasswork on it, this was only succesful on the headlights, looked like carp on the other parts. Tried it twice then gave up.

Hobbyden Isuzu:

Miscast piece I got during my visit to the Hobby Den in May this year.

Group shot of what I have sofar:

Will add 1 vehicle to that, and I hope to receive my scenery back from Ireland next week so you can a more scenic group shot.

Nice looking wrecks. I really like how you painted the VWs window to look like it is half open - very clever.

I've run out of wrecks to paint so on to the bits of junk and assorted rubble.

Loving these. This sort of thing really moves a table up a level.
Can I hijack the thread slightly and ask what colours you use for basing - it is exactly the way I want my 28mm to look.

Thanks
John

Very good paintjobs, as always.  :)

I would like someday to see some sort of  battlreport using all of these well-painted miniatures and terrain.

John: Either GW Foundation Brown or the Army Painter Leather Brown spraycan, and a light drybrush with GW Foundation Dheneb Stone. We set this on paper back in 2009 as the basing standard for the Big game 2010 and I've been basing everything the same since. Really ties everything in together.

Nimrod: I propably won't get a game in till early 2012. Please hold  :D

Cheetor: Will do!

Lovely stuff!
 :-*

Nice bit of thought has gone into these. They really look like they have been 'dumped'.
Those bases really are effective, too.
(Will probably have to cave in and get some tufts soon....)

Looking forward to more.

Tufts rule, you'll not regret them bud.

Anyway really nice scrapyard stuff there, the truck cab is inspired. Can I ask what you're basing them on, precut bases or homebrew plastic/mdf?

To make the wrecks a bit more wrecked paint wise, get some nasty paintstripper gel and pinprick it on with a pin or cocktail stick in places where the rust would form when it starts to bubble quickly use a little stiff brush to rub it off and key it in, then just add pigment powder and instant rustoleum! ;)

Suffice to say I have a scrap yard pile that I need to start, was going to do it as one piece, but your modular pics have given me a clear direction of travel here. Cheers

I buy big sheets of of various thickness plasticcard for modelmaking, and use 1.5mm for basing. I buy precut ones when I need to make a lot of the same, but almost never for model bases, I always cut to size.

Nice tip, but I don't use chemicals, I've got too many chemical burn scars already. And weathering powder, I prefer to paint my details, that stuff is too much hit and miss for wargaming if you ask me.

I've looked at bigger scrap piles, but everything for me has to fit in certain sized boxes as I have set limits to how much room my hobby can take up (don't want to piss off SWMBO) and big scrappiles don't fit into that. I do want to make a few stacks of wrecked cars, but I'm in no hurry./

Superb mate, really gritty, great for COD MW or battlefield games, can imagine Delta or rangers moving through the wreckage to capture the objective.

Can we have some weblinks for the bits cited please? Ta.

I particularly like your rust and water effects.  :o

I will have to check out some of those items, I could probably use quite a few for my Mordheim project with a little thought.

Cheers for the pointers.

Been raiding the bits box for bits and decided it is time to get work done on a bigger scenic piece. Might be overextending myself with that one, but we will see how it will come out.

Old Majorette die-cast and plastic trailer, front was broken off and the axle bent, so now it has a second life.

Metal door from The Scene. SInce I have no walls to put it on, a nice Vault door works fine for me too. The wheel is a Heller Blitz kit steeringwheel.

And the big thing Im working on but which is eating up my painting time, just a teaser:

Love all of it--very true to life in the details, very evocative. But I especially love the water tanks--does the water look as great in person as it does in these pictures? What's your technique?

It sure does. Several coats of gloss over a coat of near black paint is all there is to it.

I had a go at making a fridge and a toilet bowl. Neither came out quite the way I wanted but I didn't want to let them go to waste so based and painted them with a HO scale door for added colour. I'll be making more refridgerators and assorted items, might get them casted up as well.

Well I'll be looking forwards to seeing more then. Having just started WWII in 20mm, seeing all your 20mm stuff really makes me want to get going. Pity there isn't much sci-fi stuff around in this scale though as it really does seem to be the perfect balance of scale vs size as opposed to 15mm and 28mm; and you go to show that 20mm can easily be as well painted as much of the 28mm stuff we see around.
Duncan
