Title: Survivors WIP
Post by: Clearco on November 14, 2011, 05:05:02 PM
Hi!
I wanted to show you the survivors Iīve sculpted for Fear & Faith (and with TKMH in sight  ;))

This one is ready:

This one needs still a bit of work (eyes, hand, shoes...) but is almost finished  :)

I hope you like it  :)
P.S: They look better in the reality, i donīt know why are they soo thick in the photos  ???

I was inspired by what I saw at the popular fair (or feast or festival I donīt know really how itīs in English) at my village this summer  8)

Reality is sometimes .. a certain freakshow. Now, my question is how could they survive the Zeds since running doesn't seem to be an option ?  lol

 lol lol lol
Thatīs why they are going to get weapons  ;)
But really, the minis arenīt so thick in person (a bit "roundish" ::), but not soo much) i think that makes the photo (like "does this photo make me look fat?"  :D)

Edit: I think the size is better to see in these photos of an earlier stage:

Good song, I feel identify with it  ;D
I like the idea of WMD  ;)

Anatoli: they are 28mm. I plan to cast them when iīve finished them :) (and also make a bunch of zombies  >:D)

I love how almost every single post in this thread relates to the voluptousness (?) of these survivor women. I guess wargamers really are children at heart  ;)

Oh, come on! How could every post in this thread NOT relate to the voluptuousness of these women...?!

At least R. Crumb should be happy...  ;)

Very cool sculpts.  What is the white putty that the armature is made from?  Or is that a cast resin armature?

Love love love them!
I wouldn't say any of them are worthy of fat joke, but are more accurate than most of the rail thin, or wasp shaped miniatures available for women.
I'd buy these if you got to that phase.

Would love to see one with a gun though.

Hi!
Thank for the comments!

I wouldn't say any of them are worthy of fat joke, but are more accurate than most of the rail thin, or wasp shaped miniatures available for women.

That's also my opinion  ;) (I mean: I tried to make them "realistic" in that way, I don't know if it turned out so, or rather exagerated  lol)

Would love to see one with a gun though.

I wasn't thinking on make guns because I wanted them to be for a zombie-infected Spain  lol, but I think I can make a pair on separated hands so it's possible to change them.

The white stuff is resin: I made myself a pair of armatures I then cast in order to have an easier basis to work on. I made also several simple heads (without eyes or certain details) for the same goal.  :)

I plan to cast them (i' m trying to make the models so that they are not so difficult to cast). If you guys wan't a copie or two then just tell me then  ;)

That's not easy to say because I work on all of them at the same time, then I spend a pair of days working a little more on one or two of the models and then back to the others...I began with these minis in october but i didn't work so regularly because I was ill two weeks and then went abroad for a couple of days :? And now I'm abroad again so I'm not working on it lol

I think, if I work only in one mini I could have it done in a week or so. The good think in making several minis at the same time is that you can sculpt others when the first are drying  ;)

I love these! when can I "get some"  :D

I hope I get them finished by the end of december or begining of january :)
(I'm going to be very very busy in two-three weeks so I really hope I manage to do it so :?)

Well, if you ever do get to the point of providing these for others, I would definitely be in.

And if you ever 'take requests', I would love to see something of similar proportions as the first couple of girls, but with a gun, and dressed similar (including hair) to Juno from Juno's crew.
Any chance of this ever happening?

Wow I'm really happy to hear that! I'm definitively making the hands with guns option, but it will take a little longer  ;)

I think I could make this "Juno" girl when I'm ready with the others, it looks not so difficult  :)
I also though on a zombified version of these survivors, as you comment, but I think I'm going to wait untill I finish these before I start anything else (I have 4 survivors more in mind that I wanted to make, and I actually had already began one of them ::)). These are my very first minis (I only made conversions before) and I'm still a little slow, but I think with time i'm going to get faster so there is a chance to see the zombified version in a couple of months ;)

Excuse me for the double post, but I forgot to mention I would cast the minis in resin (I have the material and experience in how it works). Would be this a problem for those of you who wanted to have some? I know there is a lot of people who doesnīt like resin, but I cannot afford to make it another way  :?.

Resin works for me, assuming they are well cast and not all bubble/hole covered.

I've used resin minis and resin detail parts on plastic models for years, it can be a fantastic media for minis if done right.

So after 3 hour of work all I have is a broken mini  :'( :'(

A little update:

Observe that the mulatto one doesnīt have an arm anymore  :'( Iīll fix it as soon as possible!
I realised that the tall one is way too tall so iīm going to have to cut the legs (where I marked with a fix) and glue the boot a bit higher. I hope it works  ::)

The whole set of them look fantastic, thanks for updating.
You're right, the tall one is a little bit too tall, the fix should do it.  Shame about the broken arm, I hope you can salvage that one.

Again thanks for updating, this is a fantastic project to follow.  And that you are planning to make them available makes it even more interesting!

Another update:

The first one has the arm again, and I worked on the forehead. I have begun with the hand.
The second one has also a new arm. I worked on the posture because she wasnīt well balanced. Iīm happier with the result now.
The third one has become new breasts because my girlfriend said he had very weird ones (and she was right  ::)). I tried that they look natural but they turned out too big and now it looks like she had silicon  :? Donīt know what to do about this one. She has also the arms again and I make them longer.
The fourth one was also a bit unbalanced because she had a longer leg. I shorten the leg and I think it looks like better now  :)

I wasnīt happy about the form of the breast of this one (even before I talked with my girlfriend  lol) and when I saw the photos yesterday I realised they were like piramids  lol. So Iīm trying to make a more natural form.

Tell me what you think  :)

Thatīs a good point! But I donīt know why, this mini looks just a little wrong to me  :( (more in the reality than in photo perhaps). Therefore I will try to fix it, but I want her taller than the others though  ;)

You asked me about the resin to and I forget to answer. The one Iīm using is this (polyurethan resin):

They changed it for a year or so because it has another colour now...So I think itīs a modern one  :)

Thank you for your interest!!
Well, the first three of the survivors are done (and the hands with improvised weapons), and the molds aswell. I can post a pair of photos later :) Actually I wanted to show all finished at once but I see it is taking longer than expected  ::)
I havenīt made copies yet because I want to build a vibration tray in order to avoid bubbles in the castings ;)

Of the other two minis, the "bigger" one ist almost done too, Iīll try to end her today. I have almost completely remade the taller one so she needs still a bit of work :P (but I think it could be done in a couple of days)

The main problem is that I have here my Perry plastics who want to be painted so I get distracted easily lol

lol lol lol That was funny! Seriously I was wondering how theyīll look like in a couple of years when mode fashion has completely changed ;) Maybe I should resculpt them then  lol

So, as promised, here are the pics ;):

These three are already done. The one in de middle lost the fingers (and the arm broke) as I tried to get her out of the mold  :'( But thatīs not such a tragedy since the copies should still have fingers lol:

And the weapons: (the one who lost the fingers has a metal bar Iīll make with wire. The shovel (not ready yet) is for the "big" one):

(I have begun to make the guns. A pistol is already nearly done :))

And the next ones: The one on the left is already done, Iīll make the mold as soon as possible.
As you can see, the one on the right has had a radical change since I wanted to shorten the legs and finished changing almost all lol (but donīt be afraid, she is going to get a head :P)

real women and genuine bashing stuff, not the usual shotguns, assault and sniper rifles.  ;D

Might I suggest handbags. And before you belittle that idea, do not underestimate a fully loaded handbag  lol.
Another option that would match the clothing would be a giant... ribbled ... uh... never mind.

Might I suggest handbags. And before you belittle that idea, do not underestimate a fully loaded handbag  lol.
Another option that would match the clothing would be a giant... ribbled ... uh... never mind.
Thanks! I wanted to do "normal"  ::) people who are surprised by a zombie outbreak middle in the summer season (hence the clothing  ;)) and have to use totally improvised weapons. Iīm glad you like it that way :)
I thought also on handbags but I think they are a bit complicated to do if you want to cast them  :?
And about the other weapon you suggest lol...Do you think it is capable to destroy a zombie?  ;) ;)

lol lol lol lol lol lol lol lol lol lol

i was thinking exactly the same thing!!!! lol
Thatīs very funny because I posted the photos in a spanish forum too, and then this kind of comments were only about breasts, nobody said anything about bottoms...I find this difference in perception very interesting in a cultural way ;) lol

The price seems fair to me, if it helps motivate you to actually produce, heh.

Did you have any plans for hands with guns?

You'd probably have to use lots of elbow grease.  ::)
I think the main use would be to intimidate other factions/survivors.
In all honesty, who'd dare oppose an adversary wielding such an item  lol

Thank you for the comments!

I spent an entire week experimenting with my molds and castings and I have realised that need to make some changes to improve the quality (I want to thank Zafarelli for the kind advices  :)). I was a bit disapointed at the beginning because I though I could already produce the minis (I guess I overrated my casting abilities). But now Iīm more convinced than before that I really want to produce them somehow  :) I have probably to remade the molds and repair some damage that 2 of the minis suffered while making the molds and probably cut a pair of arms off to cast separatly...
And a Photo of the last update that I made last friday (I had a really busy week, you know  ;)):

I have to finish the hair on the rear side (until the middle of the back I think) and add a pair of bracelets :)

P.S: Do someone of you how I can make vacuum for the molds??  ::) o_o

These are great. They remind me of our local shopping centre (mall). I would bet someone out there would be more than happy to take these on to cast and sell for you to let you concentrate on what is clearly a very natural talent. How do they compare size-wise to some of the other survivor/zombie ranges like Hasslefree, Studio Miniatures, etc.?

Thank you!  :)

I donīt have minis from these manufacters but Iīm afraid mine are a little bigger since they are 28mm from feet to eyes...that was my mistake since I though all 28mm minis were like that, and I didnīt have at home any other 28mm minis to compare untill a month ago  ::)

Anyway they look right along other minis (mostly fantasy). I can make a pair of photos tomorrow and post them here  :)

And indeed that's the standard. Even though most "big" companies have gone down the scale creep route, many "boutique" companies stay true to the 28mm-to-eyeline scale. Such as HF, for example, who offers some of the best survivors and zombies out there.

Thank you people! Iīm very glad you like it  :)

Wow! the resin piece is simply great!
Thanks! The problem is the mold line (you canīt see it in the picture because they are on the flanks): sometimes it is to big and then itīs difficult to eliminate (and sometimes a bit of the detail on that part get lost because of it). But Iīm thinking about doing new molds with a hole for pouring and several air exits  :)
(Thatīs the kind of molds I currently do: http://ultrawerke.blogspot.com/2007/02/resin-castig-tutorial-part-i.html)

Do you have any advice Sangennaru? You are good with resin I think  :)
Title: Re: Survivors WIP
Post by: Sangennaru on January 22, 2012, 03:29:31 PM
Lol, actually I don't: i'm not used with bivalve moulds, and when i use them, i use the "sandwiching technique", like in the (great!!!) tutorial you've posted!

I think that for such a small mould, you may think to just press out the resin a lot! if you make the air exits the sandwich method is no longer effective!

(thanks for your trust, anyway! :) :) )
Title: Re: Survivors WIP
Post by: Clearco on January 22, 2012, 03:40:34 PM
Thanks for the fast answer and the advices Sangennaru  :)

I actually press the resin, but by pressing too much the mini becomes hollow very often :( (But WITHOUT mold line!  o_o) The idea with the air exits was for another kind of mold where you close the halves before you pour the resin  :) I hope it works!

By the way, the mold lines I get are not so horrible but I guess Iīm a perfectionist ;) Iīm going to experiment a bit and look how it turns out  :)
Title: Re: Survivors WIP
Post by: Sangennaru on January 22, 2012, 03:51:36 PM
mmm to avoid the "hollowness" you should wait a bit more before pressing, and pressing stronger!

Of course you will need a big mould, to avoid deformations during pressing!

I didnīt think about it! Thatīs a very good point!

mmm to avoid the "hollowness" you should wait a bit more before pressing, and pressing stronger!
I donīt wait very long now because I discovered that mold lines are littler that way...Then the problem is that the whole resin goes out of the mold if you press  lol
I guess I have to experiment further...

Thank you for your help!

I am no expert, and I mean that!

Looking at the resin model you have produced in the photos it looks really really good. I know you are probably looking for perfection and we all appreciate that, but if I popped that out of a blister (or plastic bag) I would be happy with it.

...especially when compared to a certain manufacturers resins  ;)

Would love to see some more as you go on. They are looking really good!

Just catching up on this brilliant thread. The painted figures were great, genuinely great. They are better than the majority of other modern civilians I've seen and they look as stylish (I deliberetely didn't say sleek!) as Hasslfree, which is a big compliment as I always thought I was too tight to pay Ģ4 for a 28mm figure! Good luck with the new molds.

Hi!
Iīm afraid thereīs nothing juicy to report: I made the last molds of the bodies and managed to break a hand while still in the mold, so I have to sculpt a new one (and another one of another mini that also got broken on the mold  :'( ) and make a mold of it...More work! The more I make, the more I have to make  o_o
I have to finish the weapons aswell and then make the molds of them.
The main problem is that Iīm not so motivated by now: all originals broke when I casted them (And I made several molds) so Iīm a bit upset and have developed a sort of panic when I think about handle the minis again  :? I have repaired each mini like three or more times...And all of them need new repairs because of the last mold...Itīs exasperating  >:(
[The good think: I have learned that for the next minis I have to make an unbreakable and ultra-solid skeleton WITH the arms and not simply of the trunk and legs :)]

Moreover I have to redo and repair things I already had done for months (like the hands) so itīs not the most appealing work in the world...And then I think, theyīll broke again  :(

So by now Iīm painting and waiting for inspiration and new energy to work on it again :) I think itīs better when I work full of motivation  ;)

But Iīm really thankfull you have still interest  :) Thatīs very nice and make me want to come further with the project :) (but maybe next month  ;))

Iīll tell you as soon as I manage to break my mental block and work again on it :)

I understand that it the fine details can prove difficult, I wouldn't know how to go about creating molds.  I hope that eventually it all comes together for your, and when it does, I'm sure we'll all still be here to purchase some of those ladies, if you still have interest in selling them.

Title: Re: Survivors WIP- NEWS!
Post by: Clearco on October 14, 2012, 01:17:05 PM
Hi again!

I painted some of my minis this sommer: we made a sort of Laf painters League in our spanish forum and I presented my survivors one time :) (And then I won the round  :D)

I made the zombie above for the league. In a future she should be available ;)

Then, a month later, I repainted a bit the "older" survivors:

There is more good news: The mould of the thinnest one (not in the photos) is working well, I made all the weapons and all the things that I had to finish AND I made a new survivor (I retouched the hand that holds the weapon after the photo :)):

Iīm very proud of this one: it looks really good when casted, I was surprised  lol

The hands with pistols are made aswell :)

And now the news about casting, selling and such  ;) : Iīm emigrating out of my country next week so I had to think a lot about what Iīm going to do with the minis, the moulds etc (and with my life  lol). Right now Iīm having problems with making really perfect castings (always the little f***ing bubbles in the worst places!) so I didnīt fell myself confident about selling them without an "afterwork" with putty and of course about selling them in "bigger" scale ;D So I spent a lot of time working on each casting and had the feeling that the minis should be very expensive to compense it  lol Besides I cannot travel with resin and silicon so I thought I should simplify the whole thing...

Now I have spoken with a friend who could make perfect castings for me so I can concentrate in making new minis. That sounds good and if it works Iīll be finally selling the minis AND with a very good quallity :)

Good news finally, right?  :) And thanks for your support, guys! :)

Title: Re: Survivors WIP
Post by: Clearco on December 16, 2012, 09:05:58 AM
No problem! ;)

It would cost 4 euros pro individual mini, and 22 (+ shipping*) for the whole pack of 6 (with the hand weapons and a set of pistols)

*Shipping shouldnīt be expensive, since the minis are not heavy. It costed only 5 euro from Spain to Canada  :)

I have a question for you guys: what would you like more, a pack of 6 generic zombies, or rather 8? I have a rough WIP of seven of them at the moment (I had 5 since quite a while but then I couldnīt stop myself for starting more lol) and Iīm wondering if I should make another one, or let one out*...

The price would be like the survivor girls :) (so 22 EUR for 6 and 30 EUR for 8 minis)

*I like even numbers  :D

I spent a bit of time working on the zombie girls :) and I have a question for you guys: Do you want them gore or not?
I usually donīt like it very gore or with a lot of guts, and skull exposed and stuff, but I have realized that mine look just like people walking akward  lol I was thinking on adding a pair of zombie-bite-wounds on the limbs or something like that, but not much goreish...What do you think?? How do you would like it?
Title: Re: Survivors WIP
Post by: Elk101 on March 06, 2013, 03:39:31 PM
I like the idea of just a few wounds personally. A lot of gore can end up looking very samey on the table.
Title: Re: Survivors WIP
Post by: Michi on March 06, 2013, 04:52:06 PM
Not too gory please! Perhaps a bit like the Reaper zombie strippers. Those still are a bit sexy...
Title: Re: Survivors WIP

Important: preparing my own set for painting I have realized that the shovel doesnīt fit so well due to cast-shrinkage  :? (We donīt know why the shovel got smaller at a different rate than the rest of the mini though  o_o) Speaking with Zafarelli he told me that maybe the problem is that the arm is now to high so he recommended me to use a hair-dryer to soften the resin a bit so the arm can be pushed down a bit. I think it could solve the problem :) Let me know if it works!
Title: Re: Survivors WIP
Post by: Michi on March 07, 2013, 02:53:47 PM
he recommended me to use a hair-dryer to soften the resin a bit so the arm can be pushed down a bit.

Hot water will not tend to melt the resin. I used very hot water to straighten bent resin pieces and hardened them with cold water after. It was like Spaghetti whem warm...

I wouldn't put too much effort into zombie heads, some rude survivor is just gonna bash them in with a bat or blow them off with a shotgun anyway.

I really have to commend you on the progress you've made with your sculpting.

Thank you a lot, mate! :-)
Sometimes I use greenstuff for the parts I consider harder to sculpt because I'm still more used to do tiny details with putty than with Sculpey. Sometimes there are also details I added when the mini was finished and baked and I didn't wanted to bake it again (because they have already the base sculpted in putty, that don't survive so well the baking process.) I use the putty also to cover minor inperfections or places where the sculpey broke :-)

With time I manage to sculpt using only Sculpey ;-)

@Michi: I'm on it ;)

I have done a pair of better photos of the first zombie + another one painted :) Not sure about the final color of the flesh in this one though...I like the result but my gf says it doesn't look so natural. Since I'm color blind I'd rather trust her  ;D I was thinking about giving it a bit of sepia wash so it looks more natural...what d you think?

By the power of Foromancy I hereby resurrect this thread!  lol

I've been thinking about sculpting a new version of the survivors for a while, since I think I can sculpt better now than back then + they are out of stock and out of production + I really want to... ;)

(https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-dLMZA9a0XUo/XXe7DrgmUMI/AAAAAAAABFY/8RKpFSp4_WIsWIuatKYz7aUWokCibQ8HwCLcBGAs/s1600/Miniaturenfotos%252C%2BOriginale%2B014%2B%25281%2529.jpg)

My main question is about the scale. I play mainly TWD these days and the figures are a bit bigger than regular 28mm, some of them 30mm to the eyes...I was thinking on making them compatible

What do you prefer, 28mm or rather a bit bigger (maybe 30mm to the eyes)?

Edit: I added one pic of the minis, superbly painted by Michi, since I think most of the pictures on the thread were erased by Tinypic. So you know about which minis I'm talking about  ;)

28 or a scosh bigger is good for me. TWD is what I use as well as many 28 heroic scale miniatures.
Title: Re: Survivors WIP
Post by: CookAndrewB on May 05, 2020, 07:09:56 PM
I'd do 28mm. If they run a bit "short" for something a bit larger, I think it doesn't register as odd. Especially for female figures. If the figures run large for other purposes, it always strikes me as weird. "Why is there an 8' tall woman/man" is a harder question to answer than "why is there a 5' tall man/woman?"
Title: Re: Survivors WIP

A new set would be great, 25-28mm rather than 28-32mm out of preference.
Title: Re: Survivors WIP
Post by: Melnibonean on June 20, 2020, 01:11:57 AM
28mm. It's easier to put shorter figures on a thicker base than is is to cut the bases off TWD and put them on thin bases.

Hi!
I haven't managed yet to finish some new survivors yet, I was focusing on other projects, but finish this one figure, an adventurer in the "old Clearco style" who clearly has spent too much time in quarantine between adventures... ::)

I have made some items too: a Venus figurine, a canopic vase and a wooden idol.

Besides I have got a few castings, in case someone is interested.

These miniatures paint just as easy as Copplestone and Murch sculpts. Everybody who already did, knows exactly what I mean. Great sculpts and perfect casts - I think that the survivors are distinctively unique and will go well with other ranges, but will still be outstanding. I can highly recommend them!

I didn't know her but you are right, I see the similarity :) I wanted to make a sprue with optional hands with items at some point, a flute could be funny indeed lol

Here are the first individual pictures:

A non weapon hand sprue might be an nice addition to allow these to be used as background civilians.
