Title: ACW - Atlanta Campaign Odd Little Skirmishes
Post by: cstoesen on November 30, 2011, 06:39:50 PM
I live only a few miles from a couple of odd skirmishes that took place on August 2, 1864 near Athens.

The first is an all cavalry skirmish which ended up routing and destroying most of a Union Cavalry Brigade.  (Battle of King's Tanyard).

The other is a small skirmish that deflected an attack on Athens by another Union Cavalry Brigade and featured one of the odder weapons of the war - a double barreled cannon.  The cannon still exists and sits on the campus of the University of Georgia.

I am thinking of trying to game these out in the near future.  I have started my research on these and started writing up the information about King's Tanyard here - http://cstoesen.blogspot.com/2011/11/distractions-and-diversions-or-what-i.html (http://cstoesen.blogspot.com/2011/11/distractions-and-diversions-or-what-i.html)

Is there anyone else gaming any battles/skirmishes that took place near where you live?

I live near you.   :D  So same battles.

I'm just down the road (316) from Athens.

Living in Pittsburgh has led me to have an interest in the local F&I and Pontiac's Rebellion dust-ups. Oddly enough I've also become interested in some of the ACW actions during the Atlanta campaign recently. I read some regimental histories of units recruited from the area I grew up in in NE Ohio that visited down your way.

Thanks for the replies.

Doomsdave,
Where do you game at in that neck of the woods?  I end up in Marrietta with the group I play with.

Arron,
Which actions have you been looking at with the F&IW?  This has begun to interest me lately as one of the guys here puts on some fantastic F&IW games.  Just did one on a supply convoy to Fort William Henry.  I still don't know much about the conflict though.

If I want a pick-up game of anything I usually go to Phoenix Games:

They also do a LOT  of touneys, not my bag though.
I can be found in The Tower Game Center as well
Most of my gaming is with my family (3 boys and a wife who paints and plays) and a few of my friends who share the insanity.

We've done several old west games based on actions from this neck of the woods. It is fun when the game can be related to things the players see daily. In fact we have even gamed shootouts with replicas of the buildings we were gaming in on the board.

Mainly just minor raids like the PA provincials' raid on Kittanning. I'm trying to get enough highlanders painted to do Bushy Run and Grant's Hill though.

Living the other side of the Atlantic, it's battles from another civil was that happened near me - Lansdown, the 2 sieges of Bristol etc.
When my brother lived in the States for a couple of years in was in NJ, so no ACW battles but Trenton just down the road and Washington's Crossing even nearer.
