Title: Space Hulk - Hirst Arts build - Laboratorium Malum Plantae
Post by: Dr Mathias on December 04, 2011, 07:20:45 PM
After nearly two years, my 3rd edition Space Hulk build is complete. All the actual casting and construction was finished a couple months ago, aside from some scenario specific elements such as the corrupted marines and the 'unknown organisms'. I didn't feel like I could show it off without having finished the terminators and genestealers- which I just completed yesterday. Painting the new terminators made me miserable beyond words... and I didn't care for the new 'stealers (I don't like the integrated architecture) so I used older versions for them.

holy crap....

I am a huge Space Hulk fan and have all games (too many copies each :P ) and have been dreaming to get a 3D board one day. It's a huge project to get a good looking board together and you have nailed it perfectly. Very very inspiring, would be amazing to play with a board like that :)

High praises to your work!  :o  :o  :-*  :-*

This is a board anybody can be proud to own and play with.

Your use of corrugater cardboard at the edges is very clever and looks extremely well for such a simple solution.  :D

The golden gargoyles (pic 4) are from hirst arts molds too?

Thanks for sharing your SPLENDID work.

Very atmospheric, the individual entrances and 'characterised' areas really evoke a sense of, I dunno, drama to the board.

Thanks for the kind comments everyone, appreciated.

Did you experience any particular problems with the Hirst pieces? Any advice to those of us considering taking this project on?

It is a fairly massive undertaking- it takes a lot of time and there is some money involved for molds and such. I used most of a 50lb. bag of Merlin's Magic and several different molds. I enjoy the casting and building process- some people don't and if you're one of those you should step back slowly :) If you're up for some casting Roebeast I know you'll like the 'Machinery Builder' and 'Industrial Accessory' molds- I use pieces from those in all sorts of kitbashes. I got those toward the end of building this thing and I wish I'd had them sooner.

I had the casting and building 50% done in the month prior to my son's birth, after that time is my most precious thing and I have to parcel it out in very limited amounts. The LPL and my Wagers of Sin track (using Keebler molds) were big distractions... plus I lived in NYC over the summer so that was two months of 'free time' lost (I teach college and have summer off... that was truly painful to not be able to work on anything).

My biggest bit of advice would be to use a surfactant to spray the molds with before pouring- that was a turning point regarding casting quality. Also, Bruce Hirst had a Space Hulk plan posted on the website- GW made him take it down but I'm certain someone on the boards would have it. I had mine mostly cast and built before Bruce's instructions came out but its pretty much the same, mostly floor tiles with the 'Industrial Edge' mold. Hope this helps, feel free to ask any questions.

Fantastic work Dr. Mathias! It all looks fabulous but you have to share what you used for the eggs. They look like seed pods of some kind and they are just perfect!

Thanks Pil, glad to share-
The alien eggs are indeed made from daylily seed pods, you have a good eye! Last year I gathered a few of the pods in early summer and made a mold of them so I could cast them up in resin and Merlin's. They sat around for a year until I had the corrupted marines made. The opened eggs are dried lily seed pods that I gathered the following autumn after they'd expelled their seeds - they are pretty fragile and I didn't think I could cast them reliably, so I gave them a lot of coats of Future Floor Wax and paint to stiffen them up. They came out better than I expected actually. The nasty alien mucous that attaches the eggs and the corrupted techmarines is made from small pieces of bathroom toilet tissue (toilet paper) that have been dipped in acrylic gloss medium- the clear acrylic paint additive. I'm sure you could just use paint if you wanted. The TP sort of breaks apart and allows you push it around for various effects before it dries. Its a trick I learned in high school art class for texturing paintings. I believe Northstar used a similar if not the same technique for waves to great effect in this LPL entry:

Post by: Mason on December 05, 2011, 08:36:21 PM
Those eggs certainly do look great!
I am really surpised that is how you got that effect.
I would never have guessed.
I used the same technique for the water on my docks after seeing Northstar's post and it really is easy!
I wish I had known about letting the tissue paper break apart, I am sure it would have looked a lot better if I had.
Oh, well, you live and learn.
That is what this forum is all about , though, learning new tricks off of other members and putting it into practice.
Great tip, Dr Mathias!
Thank you!

Now that the "Build Something 2017" contest is over I can post some additional images of my recent board sections.

Here's the "Build Something" entry:

The layout breaks down into three large two-bay sections, and I made three computer terminal endcaps.

The engineers are from the Astropolis range, the removable dead spacer is a Mantic Deadzone zombie that has been reposed and converted with Wargames Factory skeleton parts.

Thank you all, appreciated. The 'Build Something' was a great experience and got me interested in adding some other things to the hulk.

Can we get a full shot of this bit added to full Space Hulk board?

Yes, my son has been begging to play Space Hulk, he and I will lay out all the sections in a couple days and I'll get a photo. Because Hirst went with 1.5" tiles the layout takes a LOT of space. I don't think I have ever put them all out, although I have played the largest official mission. So it needs to happen :)

Beakies would be very much at home here.

My dream is that GW will come out with a new set of beakies. They have released sets of Mark III and Mark IV armor (I think that is what they are) in the Horus Heresy sets, so I think it could happen someday. As I have said before if they released a set of Mark VI it would be printing money :)

Thanks :)

The pods are Mega-Blok 'Plasma Tech' toys.

They're actually very plain, the maneuvering thrusters were made from a Hirst Arts part and a '1x1 cone' Lego, then cast in resin.

Thanks gents :)

Excellent work! Was the body scratchbuilt?

The structure of board sections is almost all Hirst Arts components over a Gatorfoam base. The pods aren't modified much- just a few minor additions. The arms holding the pods in place are scratch built.

Here's a pic of the entire layout, it fits a 4x6 area more or less. There were about five endcap/stealer entries that didn't have anything to attach to so they were left off.

This will do all the 3rd edition missions. I need to make a couple new sections for 4th edition. I don't own the 1st edition Deathwing or Genestealer expansions, so I haven't made the sections those games introduced either. I think those games had some doublewide corridors and larger rooms.

This is fantastic stuff!!

I've been working on painting up my stealers from my 1st edition game over the last few weeks, the terminators haven't aged as well so I've been purchasing current ones off ebay. This is a welcome bit of inspiration.

In my case I'm going to paint the figures but settle with the gaming tiles you get in the box, I simply have too many other projects on the go to find the time to tackle what your doing. You've done a cracking job though!

Thanks for sharing.

Now that the 'Build Something' contest has run its course, I have some detail pictures to add to this thread. My entry, fitting the 'ill advised' theme of this year's contest, was a ship board repository for dangerous plants. The backstory is that the section was administered by Adeptus Mechanicus seeking a more virulent form of bio-wire (which some may recall from the olden days of Rogue Trader). Naturally, things got out of hand somehow...

My goal was to create some mini-narratives on this rather large section. The first was a locked cabinet containing anti-plant spray, along with a poor unfortunate adept who was targeted by the bio-wire as it broke free. Why was it locked?

Another point of interest would be a carnivorous plant, probably from Catachan. It was made with some lily pods for mouths, wire for stalks, and plastic leaves. This piece is removable, so that it can be used for death world terrain, or removed if it is destroyed so that it can be passed safely.

There are two large doors into the section, integrated into the layout. This one closed off in time, snipping a vine that had tried to snake its way down the corridor when the 'accident' happened.

The middle section contains long-dead plants- at some point the automated feeding and watering mechanism must have failed. This dome was never breached.

Some plant life attempting to establish itself in the corner, over a nice vent with warm humid air.

The second large door wasn't sealed fully; plant life has made its way past. The plan is that some further sections will have this sort of mossy mildew look.

Overall a pretty fun build to make, and one I'd been wanting to get to for a long time. The main reason I love LAF contests so much is that they get me starting (or finishing) projects that have been on the burner for far too long.

Fantastic mate! Absolutely love this piece! :o The guy reaching for the plant spray had me chuckling! lol

So what's the plan for next year? A shuttle bay room? Bridge? Engineering deck?

This was one glorious entry - especially because it followed up BSC2017, and has a narrative.  8) 8) 8)

Brilliant, especially all the little stories told.

Really glad that you found the time to show the detail pics as the one picture allowed for the competition was never going to be enough.
Looking forward to the next instalment. Next year?

Thanks for the comments, appreciated. I knew that this build wouldn't photograph well before I started and didn't plan or expect to make it past round one :)

I have several ideas for future additions, and I'd like to squeeze some in before the next Build Something. I've started casting a bunch of bookshelves and books so a library is going to happen at some point. I'd also like to make a command room with a 'holographic' table, at least one hangar, a cargo bay, some more sections overgrown with moss and slime, maybe some crew quarters and a scriptorium...

I also started a 3D Necromunda project (which will have higher walls) and it may end up being compatible with this layout, even though I made that using custom 2" squares to match the Zone Mortalis boards GW makes.

Too many projects in the backlog! I miss the days when I was just out of college, no kids, my job was one I could leave at the workplace... GW would come out with a game and I'd have a complete army (and themed terrain) painted and ready to go within two or three weeks. Ah, the good ole' days!

Surely you've got to do a corridor like the one in Aliens? That kinda secreted resin look?

I have thought about that. I have the old GW Tyranid Attack game and kicked around making a 3D board for it, which would be fairly easy to transition into the overall Space Hulk.

Yeah, I've still got the original models in my Tyranid force somewhere! Although the version I got I'm sure was called Advanced Space Crusade. :?

I'm sure there's some good resin terrain bits out there that would be good for that. I thought it was Scotia Grendel that made them but I can't find them! :(

Are you thinking of the Kryomek stuff?

I had Tyrannid Attack (I still have somewhere). I think there were Womble scouts in there.

Advanced Space Crusade had elves, Wombles,  half Necron half Daemon robots and dreadnoughts. Somewhere had the expansion packs on cheap and I bought one or more. No idea what happened to them.

Fenris Games' Sulaco (http://fenrisgames.com/shop#!/Sulaco-floor-tiles/c/2290872/offset=0&sort=normal) stuff maybe? Loads of floor tiles, some walls & doors and bases.

I think you're thinking of Space Crusade. Advanced Space Crusade was Marine Scouts and Tyranids....

I take it, it must have been re-boxed and renamed at some time.

I had a look through those company's, but couldn't find the terrain I was talking about. I'll need to spend more time googling!

You are quite correct.

They did a large range of reshuffled plastic opponents.

I was wrong about Tyranid Attack, it was Terminators versus Tyranids, 'Stealers and Hybrids.

I suspect the box is somewhere in G-Space, like L-Space but with more figures.... ^__^.
