Hello fellows! Happy new year to everybody :D
Here is the starting of my first painting commission here on LAF. It is a Mordheim Marienburg warband for Admiral Benbow painted with a classic marienburger style with some hired swords.
First, I have to beg your pardon for the pics quality: as always in this period I have not a good photo setting. I'll add better pics as soon as possible. For the moment I finished these two bad guys:
(http://img221.imageshack.us/img221/130/img0030qa.jpg) (http://imageshack.us/photo/my-images/221/img0030qa.jpg/)

Great stuff Faber. Lucky Admiral Benbow. Nothing wrong with the photos either.
Is the Admiral basing these himself ? I actually really like them as they are. Looks like they are in some ruins :D
-
OH BABY; COOL STUFF!,,,there, that about says it all. Well maybe a word or two more. They really look TERRIFIC, colorful without getting gaudy...I tend to go gaudy/cartoonish myself...& nicely based. VERY WELL DONE...the Good Admiral is a lucky Guy!
-
They look great, Faber!
:-* :-* :-*
The Admiral should be extremely pleased.

thanks mate! :) too kind about the pics...I really need to improve this side of the hobby.
And, yes: I forgot to say that the Admiral is going to paint the base himself :)

eheh! thanks DeafNala! :) I'm happy you like them. Bases are done by the Admiral himself, only the pj is mine :)

Thanks Mason! :)
BTW, I started the rest of the band ;D A joy to paint those mordheim guys.

And he is - indeed! Very nice painting from Faber's talented hands, and I'm really looking forward gaming with my new warband. The miniatures are already based and will be painted and decorated by myself to keep my collection consistent.
Some recent "Song of Blades and Heroes"-games and the wonderful Witchtown thread by the Prof himself enthused me to get back into proper Fantasy again after some years of strictly historical gaming - well, with some VSF included, and, err, some Old West. And Full Thrust, of course. Fictional colonial games as well ... Hhm, were there some historical games at all? Anyway, glad to be back!
:D
-
That's great stuff!
I've always liked the Marienburg spiffy colours; can't wait for the rest of the band.
And since I've never seen the Ogre Bodyguard up close (yet :D ) I have to ask; is that a Halfling in his backpack? lol

And that's make Faber a happy painter :D To please the committent is obviously the main purpose ;)

lol god knows what this big buy (wich I call "Ugo") has in his backpack! For sure we can see a little halfling and a dead skaven ;)
stay connected for the incoming rest of this warband!

I should let you know that the original ogre has some very large, square theeth protruding from his lower lip looking quite ugly. I didn't like them and cut them away.
-
The ogre is very nicely done and one of my fav ogre models.
-
Great job! IIRC the Ogre has a halfling and a giant rat in his back pack. Which makes him one of my faves!
Keep up the great work Faber!
-
Brilliant stuff, Faber, Bravo! Nice Ogre is that.

many thanks guys! ;)
actually this is one of the best ogre ever sculpted in GW world. It's just perfect for Mordheim! It was very funny to paint it following the Admiral's instruction. I have spent a lot of time in chosing the right skin colour and painting the face was a real joy :D

Well, the Ogre is a Perry Twins sculpt, so no surprise its THE AWESOMENESS!!! :D

I'm finishing the captain and other four models. Pics soon! :)

I'm really ignorant about sculptors, what else from Perry Twins?
-
All of the original Empire range, much of the LOTR stuff, and gobs of their own historicals. Perry Miniatures is their website. Just google it. IMO they have the best grasp of human anatomy and proportion.
-
Nice stuff! :-* :-*

Hey Faber, great warband! Keep posting all the WIP on it.

goosh o_o!
€ 3-3,5/model for that kind of model....!
I think 10 € is correct price.
I know you're on promotional sale but...
have a nice paint, man.

thanks killshot! ;) More soon!

Hey Damien! :) thanks for supporting. Next 5 minis batch is coming. The captain is almost finished, hope to finish it tonight and take some pics tomorrow. Due to approching law exams I can paint only in the evening/night and so I'm going slower than usual :(

hey Kritikor! :D
This super low price is just because I have never done any commission before, here on LAF. So I'd like to give people the opportunity to see the value of my painting before running the right price. :) Luckily, I love to paint minis ;)
I think 10 euro WOULD be the correct price but I'm not sure that people would pay 100 euro plus shipping for a 10 model warband, even if very well painted.
What do you think about guys?
Cheers

I'd have no problem whatsoever paying €10 per figure for painting of this quality. Lots of painters - and I'm not talking about Golden Demon winners doing display cabinet work - charge this sort of price or more.
Better to charge a fair price and have enough work than be cheap and have too much, I reckon.
-
well, I think the chaptain (is the sworded-shielded one the chaptain?) takes you at least 2 hours working, at least.
5€/hour (+color, light, etc.) for that model.
Still a very cheap price.
of course I'm more painter than buyer!

Eh eh thanks :)
I know a lot of non pro painters are asking 10euro or more for a single figure. It is still a low price for the work involved but more reasonable. BTW, I'm happy with the super discount I did: is the chance to show people how I work. For next commissions I will apply a higher price, and hope people will spend a little more but knowing I am a trustable painter here on LAF ;) I totally agree that is better to charge a fair price and have enough work than be cheap and have too much. But starting is starting :)

Yes, you are right Tom. Especially thinking that the captain took me far more than 2 hours :D
BUT, it was a real joy to paint it and so I'm happy I did it. :)
BTW, here the result with the captain. He is a Marienburg captain and I think he deserved a gold armour: the Admiral agree and so he is really shining now :) Pics aren't so good...I know :( I am still waitin for that bloody phototent I ordered from China on ebay ( o_o) to arrive. I tried to achieve a decent result with sunlight plus a white-light lamp but it is still far darker than what I wanted.
Here is the goldboy:

@Admiral Benbow: if you are not happy with something please tell me. I'm waiting to finish the entire gang before of giving them a matt varnish for protection, so they are still changeable. ;)
what do you think guys?
C&C always welcome!

You did a bloody decent work Faber! Those are a real beauty! I really like the skin finish on the golden brat.

Absolutely superb work, Faber!
No wonder that the Admiral is very happy.
I would be!
-

Many thanks Ale! ;) Usually I go with a more pinkish style for skin but since I've painted this more "tanned" (as requested) guys I think I really love this way. More realistic and pretty cool ;)
BTW the skin recipe, for who is interested: GW tallarn flesh + 1/4 snakebite leather is the base, then wash with ogryn flesh, than highlight with thinned tallarn flesh, then with tallarn flesh + 1/4 elf flesh, than wash again with watered down ogryn flesh again to unite the highlights.
:-*
Absolutely superb work, Faber!
Thanks mate! :) They would fit perfectly in Krappefortt lol
-
:o :o
Thats some nice rich gold Faber...very nice. Your skin tone is also very interesting...dusky...I love it!
Blue
-
The vibrant color choices, the rich tones of the golden armor, & especially the way you brought out the minis character with their facial expression make the Captain FANTASTIC LOOKING...matches the quality of his associates nicely. VERY WELL DONE!
Coming up with a fair/acceptable price for commission work is the hardest part of the job.

It was too funny to paint that gold!
Personally, I would not hang out in Mordheim with a golden armour :D But probably a Marienburg crazy mercenary captain would! lol

Thanks DeafNala, you are too kind :)
And, wise man, you are right, coming up with a fair/acceptable price for a commission work is really hard. Especially because every model is a challenge and (for me) it's really impossible to understand how much time a paintjob will require. :)
cheers!

What, dusty skin tones.
I figured they had just be out in the sun, working on their tans. lol
Really fine, fine painting, really love them. :-*

Models look great, I especially like the ogre. Your faces are great and show the character of the models. 8)

He is pretty damn goood!!!

Today I have a flash update, I've finished a couple more figs: here they are in the usual crappy piccies
(http://img832.imageshack.us/img832/68/pb190001o.jpg) (http://imageshack.us/photo/my-images/832/pb190001o.jpg/)
first another classic marienburger
(http://img593.imageshack.us/img593/4497/pb190003.jpg) (http://imageshack.us/photo/my-images/593/pb190003.jpg/)
(http://img440.imageshack.us/img440/8209/pb190004h.jpg) (http://imageshack.us/photo/my-images/440/pb190004h.jpg/)
pretty a challenge to paint his face :)
Second, a middenheimer who thinks that is better to stay with the rich marienburgers:
(http://img843.imageshack.us/img843/4361/pb190008.jpg) (http://imageshack.us/photo/my-images/843/pb190008.jpg/)
(http://img7.imageshack.us/img7/6007/pb190009n.jpg) (http://imageshack.us/photo/my-images/7/pb190009n.jpg/)
(http://img859.imageshack.us/img859/4600/pb190010.jpg) (http://imageshack.us/photo/my-images/859/pb190010.jpg/)
I don't like this mini so much. I think it is not so well sculpted and he has a lot of little details that I'm not sure what they are ??? BTW I'm pretty happy with the final result.
To finish this update, the usual group shot with the other nasty fellas
(http://img88.imageshack.us/img88/5072/pb190013g.jpg) (http://imageshack.us/photo/my-images/88/pb190013g.jpg/)

love them! i've seen them by flesh and they're great!

Cracking work :)
psst, you charge too little. For this standard most people charge 15-20 euros/pounds.
If you can make enough on 10 euros per standard human sized model then fair play but keep in mind materials/taxes and prep work.
Keep up the good work.

Eheh! Excellent :D Now I'm going to do the one with double pistol and the one with mornig star. After them, the freelancer :P. I am looking forward to paint it: always wanted to paint such a lovely sculpt. Maybe, togheter with the ogre and captain, the best sculpt of the lot IMO.

VERY WELL DONE! I love your choice of colors & the skin tones are robust, perfect for men who spent much of their lives out of doors.

Wow Faber! Love your painting :-* :-* :-* The metallics are cracking!

Nice stuff, love the oranged haired hammer wielder!
Thanks Adam! :)
I was unsure about the hair colour for him...First I decided to go with a classic blonde hair but it was too cool to give him a ginger hair :D It seems something like a celt warrior to me now :)
(and PM replied mate)

Today finally I managed to take some pics of the two more finished marienburgers. Pics are a bit dark but you have to know that here in Bologna is snowing since tuesday so light is what it is. The bloody phototent I ordered is still missing between Italy and China :?

You are right mate :( As said, in these days there is no sunlight to help me...Yesterday morning pics were worst and I was decided to go out there to buy another lamp but...it's snowing the hell here! :D So I prefer to stay home with darker pics. But, ok, I promise I'll go to take another lamp (or two) to take decent pics :)
Looking great again, Faber!

eheh! you are to kind mate :) I'd like to show you them in flesh because pics are really dark. They are better than this! :)

Very nice Faber.
What a great looking Warband. :-*
I'm not a GW fan normally but I love Mordheim miniatures.
I hope you don't mind but I copied your last image and did a quick Auto Contrast / Auto Color correction on it.
Probably a better representation of what they look like in person. :)

much better, yeah. a few clicks are enough! ;) you lazy faber XD

UPDATE:
Well, I finished the commission! :D
Here is the freelancer in his two version, on foot and riding. A time consuming job on these figs. Plenty of nice details to paint. I downloaded irfanview and edited the pics with autoadjust function. Better looking, IMO.

Lovely work! 8)
I like the fish nailed to the shield but is there a story behind it?
-
That is my absolute favorite Mordheim mini; AND you did a SPECTACULAR job on his coolness. VERY WELL DONE!

thanks mate! :) I don't know the background sense of the nailed fish...Probably he really loves dead animals! He has a dead rat and a wolf(?) tail tied to his lance too...and a necklace with a rat skull! Maybe he is a taxidermist freelancer lol
BTW, I realized I had never paint any fish before, so I painted it three times before being satisfied.. o_o

thanks DeafNala! :) Actually it is a real beauty of a sculpt. Best one in the Mordheim range for me too.

Which brings us to the next question...
(you know, how did you do it?)

:) I'll try to take some close-up of the fish.
Basecoat of gw 1/4 codex gray + 1/4 skull white + 1/2 vallejo chainmail. This to obtain a shiny fish-skin. Then I painted the upper part and fins in a mix of 1/2 dark angels green + 1/2 scorched brown. With this same colour I made those small dots you can see on the body. Then I wash the entire fish with GW devlan mud and highlighte it with the basecoat colour. Finally, I painted his eye in yellow/ochra and I added a small black dot in the centre of it.
I was inspired by pics on the web, like this one:

hope it helps, WK :)

More to come too, and now I've seen that horse....... Damn that's a fine horse!

Lovely, rich colours on that Freelancer.

Who knows? Fish and apple cores are liberally sprinkled throughout the Mordheim rulebook and the accompanying figure range though.

I guess he's from Marienburg?

True about Mordheim rulebook... Lovely illustrations on that book! I wish the evil GW has spended more time on Mordheim...It could be the best range of fantasy weird reinassance minis...I'd like to have the sculpting skill to create what they didn't!
-
Marvellous - I especially like the Don Quixote de la Mancha, with fish, type mini by the company "de cuyo nombre no quiero acordarme" (opening line of Don Quixote - "whose name I do not wish to recall") - be lovely to play a game tilting windmills. or is that ferociuos giants lol - all farce and deception really or is it madness.

Faber, if GW spent more time on Mordheim, they'd be milking it and we'd be on 3rd edition - which would be rubbish - by now ;)
I guess he's from Marienburg?
Why? He wears the livery colours of Hochland yet on his shield is a bull which is often associated with Ostland. This seems appropriate to me. After all, he's a freelancer, a mystery man, a wanderer. He could come from anywhere. Or maybe he just really likes red, green and bulls?
As an aside, the bull is also the coat of arms of the Swiss canton of Uri. The capital of Uri is Altdorf. Which just goes to show that GW cannot be accused of originality (see also Marienburg (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Marienburg_Castle,_Hanover))

Personally I think that Mordheim is way more funny than WFB. There's plenty of people still playing it...But as always GW policy is to catch the youngest audience and maybe Mordheim isn't the right game...but you are right, they could have destroyed Mordheim too now... It seems we are starting the old discussion about GW lol
About freelancer livery: right info Citizen :) The Admiral isn't that interested about tough, he just wanted a red and green choice and I suggested the white for bull symbol. Personally, I really like red and green combo, complementary colours always work well togheter :) My marauder dwarfs will be red and green and the freelancer painting just give me the idea :D
