Hi all,
This is my first attempt at painting 28mm, I'm normally a 6mm painter so the deep creases found on 28mm clothing are proving a challenge.
The trousers are the issue for me here, how do I achieve the deep crease look without two very contrasting blues?
Army painter?, wouldn't know as I've never used it.
I know I could use closer shades but I want the detail to stand out.
Any help is much appreciated

He looks pretty good to me.
You might try a fairly dark blue wash.
That might give you a look you would like.

Generally layering a couple of shades in between the shadow and base colour will give a better transition and take out some of the contrast, but for your first 28mm that's not bad at all.

I agree with the concesus, it looks pretty damned good! As mentioned sometimes a nice wash or a few intermediate layers can help tie it together.

It seems you know exactly what you are doing here. I wouldnt try anything drastic ( such as the army painter dip ) the colors of shade and highlight are perfect IMHO, but if you were to add a 3rd 'middle' coat i think you may acheive more of the look you want. This figure is fantastic on its own, and i think a unit of them painted EXACTLY like that would look awesomeballz on the table.

I never thought I'd enjoy 28mm painting but having dipped my toe in I think I'll go get some more.

Welcome Matthew! Very nice job on that mini. :)
I think you could use some washes to make the process easier and (IMO) more effective. I'm a great fan of washes and I tried different brands. I have to say that GW washes have no opponents in my heart, so I strongly suggest to spend 20€ and take the whole set of six: badab black (perfect to shade grey or metals), gryphonne sepia (perfect for yellow and white), baal red (nice for yellow but not my favourite one), thraka green (it's a dark green, not bad for any use on lighter green tones), devlan mud (is a dark brown wash, lovely on bronze, metal or any kind of light/medium brown) adn ogryn flesh (brown/red, perfect for skin). They are absolutely different from dipping/army painter. After they dried you can paint on them as on normal painting.
I'm not a GW zealot, but I tried Secret Weapons and Vallejo washes and I really do not like them. There is a great difference between "washes" (GW only IMO) and "ink". Washes dry in the lower areas and become similar to normal paint, inks tend to dry randomly and often becoming shiny.

Hello, Matthew. Lovely clean job on that mini.
I endorse the suggestion of adding some mid tones. Another approach would be to put the shadows into context by adding some highlights - there don't seem to be any, though that may be the lighting and photography, which sometimes loses them. At the moment, you've painted the mini as a flat surface with some areas of deep shadow, but highlihts would emphasise that it is a 3D surface.

I'll pick up some GW washes tomorrow lunchtime and see how they go faber, I'm a fan of GW paints too - the figure is done with them.
So washes and highlights it is, 3D glasses at the ready!

That's basically my painting style! Washes and highlights rules IMO. Everything you can see in my gallery is basic colour + proper wash + various highlights level (ok, with some trick here and there :D). An update...
Two more victims as I try to achieve the trouser look I want.
I used a different approach on these two.
U/C- citadel black
Base- citadel storm blue
main blocking- citadel ultramarines blue
top coat detail- citadel shadow grey
drybrush- 70/30 mix citadel ice blue and skull white
so that's 5 coats before I even think of washes but they'll come on the next victim.
I know there are differing groups of opinion concerning accuracy when it comes to confederates - were they ragged rebs or all grey, well I'm gonna mix it up I tell ya.
With the ideas I have in mind whilst learning to paint 28mm, expect an army of clowns.
