Hi, everyone. I've been working on a cityboard for playing some All Things Zombie in 28mm. The majority of the buildings are from Sarissa Precision's CityBlock 28mm. Here's a little update.
I hope I'm doing these updates correctly.

Promising layout! The roads looking really good. How'd you do them? I find road width is usually compromised too much on some boards, but yours looks great. Using cut up vinyl tile for the sidewalks is a neat technique. It will all look awesome painted up. The old West building as a steakhouse is an idea I may swap too!
-
Hi, Stroblight. Thanks. :) The roads are very easy. The city board is made from 2 2x4 foot sections of 1/4 inch mdf, with the rough side up. Spray primed black. Then I taped off the road sections and sprayed the gray concrete sections with gray automotive primer. Once dry went back over each area with either black or gray craft paints. The white or yellow lines were drawn on with paint pens and a ruler. When the boards are put together the roads are 12 inches wide. I initially thought I would have enough room for two traffic lanes and parking on each side of the road, allowing 2 inch wide lanes for each, but decided to leave off the parking because my vehicles are a little too large for 2" lanes. Foot wide roads leave a lot of open space on the board but we can always place vehicles and jersey barriers for cover.

Nice board and great set up.
-
Cool set up.
Like everyone else I am really taken by your roads.
Very well done.
-
Looking good mate ;)
-
Thanks, everyone. I have the day off so I'm hoping to get some more work done on the board today.
-
Nice setup!
As a survivor, I'd feel very open and exposed walking there...
-
nice table.
love the hirst arts brick building.
-
Great city board - love the way your streets turned out!
-
So lovely.
-
Hi, folks. Thanks. I took a few more pics, didn't get much done. A little under the weather.
-
That's really quite fantastic!
-
Lovely. Great work on the streets. I have that same taco truck that's on your board. ;)
-
That's an excellent board.
I have a question for you. Which make are your police vehicles (car and van)? I need some for a present day Call of Cthulhu diorama, and these seem spot on.
And if you could post a pic of them next to some 28mm minis (to make sure the scale goes well), that would be very appreciated, too.
-
Very nice table!! :o
-
Hi, folks. Thanks. :)
@DoomsDave: Those trucks are very cool. I went to that Rite-Aid looking for a Postal Service Truck they used to have. They were out of those, but had these food trucks instead.
@AJSalium: I can't get to the vehicles right now. I will check later when I get off. I don't remember a brand on them, IIRC, it just said "Made in China". All of the vehicles pictured came from a Rite-Aid Drug store. Here's a pic of one with a Haloclix mini.
and here's a link to a blog entry from last night on those vehicles.

I hope that is helpful. I have several other police, fire and EMS vehicles I bought off e-bay, but no pics just yet.
Thanks for the coments everyone.

Perfect for super heroes adventures too, by the way ;)
-
Needs fencing! :D
Very nice start mate, get the buildings painted soon then start filled the environment with 'stuff' plenty of good companies out there to chose from.
Good luck.

I was thinking the same thing. Your lay out looks very much like the maps they use to have in the old super hero RPG games. I remember many fights occurring on that same street corner.
-
@SundayHero: Thanks. That was one of the first things I thought when I went to the Sarissa Precision site.
@Commander Vyper: Thanks. Your Urban Zombie Board thread is a great inspiration. I do have some fencing.

@Michka: Thanks. That's cool.

Nice ! what make is it ?
-
Also, while you may be taking questions!
Where did you get the payphones from?
-
@zizi666: I got them from Toy Soldiers Depot a while ago. Here's a link:

@LeonMallet: Those payphones are part of a model railroad scenery set, by Walthers Scene Master. Linky:

Brilliant - thanks. :)
-
Looks great LuckeyJoe :)
Im also looking forward to hearing your take on painting your Sarissa buildings.
Here is an example that I am working on
(http://i582.photobucket.com/albums/ss268/tjantzen/28mm%20Buildings/Sarrisamodels_web.jpg)
I actually spray painted all the parts before assembley. That resulted in a bit of sanding in order to get the pieces to fit. The fittings are rather "snug", so with the extra layer of paint some care neede to be taken.
But as you can see the brick lines came out rather well. I just forgot to spray the ends of the side pieces...
Now I just need to figure out how to give the buidlings some "patina" :D
regards
Thomas
-
@Tjantzen: That came out very nicely. I wasn't smart enough to prepaint mine prior to assembly. I hope to start painting mine soon. I'll be looking at your example when I start.

Hi, folks. I did a couple more projects for my cityboard. One was a scratchbuilt dumpster and the other was one of the Gamecraft Miniatures Old West buildings I'm using as a modern day Old West themed Steakhouse.

Curl up and Dye.... lol lol
I seem to remember Garrison Keillor using that name. Made me laugh then and still does....
Nice work on the buildings...
Doug
-
@Doug: Thanks very much. That was a fun building, though now I'm stymied for finding a 28mm beauty chair. :)
-
Thanks for the heads up on the fence, that's a must buy. Also, cool looking board.

Great use of the old west building.
Those fences were out for a while, but they just got more in a few days ago. And as of this posting they are down to 7 left.
-
Nice.
What i think is important with all these city board projects, and if i can give you a bit of advice, its complete and consolidate. Get everything painted and finished before you move on, that way, you have working playable areas from the get go, rather than bits of this and that.
Those buildings look nice and are passable unpainted, but again get some paint on them before moving on, never underestimate the effect of a nicely completed gaming table.
Cheers and again good luck.

He had 14, then I bought seven of them for various projects. Get'em while they are hot!

Cold now. Just bought the other 7. :D
-
@Joey: Thanks. And I'm glad you like the fences. I've had them sitting in a bitz drawer for quite a while now.
@Papa Spanky: Thanks, and thanks for the update on the fences.
@CDR Vyper: Thanks, and thanks very much for the advice. I've been pouring over your pics on your thread for inspiration and I appreciate and value the advice and encouragement. I am sort of trying to complete a section and move on, what keeps me from "completing" are the interior furnishings. I'm a little torn between fully furnished interiors and interiors with just stairs doors, and interior walls.
@Deathwing: Cool. Thanks for the heads-up.
@Zizi666: Cool. I hope they get more in stock, soon.
Thanks everyone for the comments. I hope to have another update this weekend.

I find the interior issue to be a problem when deciding to go forward with my projects. Unlike others here, I do not go heavy on the interior props, but they are important. You have to strike a balance between playability and diorama. One leads to boring pieces and other means you can't place minis in them. Unless it's a big piece, I found stairs, posters, trash, and few pieces of furniture hugging the walls to be enough. Just my 2 cents.
Joey
-
@Deathwing: Thanks. That does sound like a reasonable approach.

Nicely said joey.
-
Simple suggestion, dont! ;)
All my buildings lack interiors for one reason: speed of gaming mechanics. If people head into the buildings they get placed on the roof with floor marker dice, random encounters and the usual combat can still ensue, so buildings can be used appropriately for hiding, sniping etc.. I just I prefer my focus to be on the street.
-
@CDR Vyper: Thanks, but my OCD won't let me ignore a playable interior. ;) And the playable interiors was one of the reasons I chose the Sarissa Precision buildings.

That's why mine are solid, nothing for the OCD to grab onto! ;)

Hi, everybody. I finally finished off the last 2 Sarissa Precision 28mm CityBlock buildings on my blog. These have been a joy to work on. Now all I have to do is paint a bajillion Zombies. :)

Nice looking buildings. They look very nice painted. I like the signs you made for them as well.
-
@aggro84: Thanks very much. This was a fun project, the signs kind of became a project all their own.
-
Great looking buildings, the signs do add a nice touch. Seeing yours painted has convinced me to add them to my "must have" list for modern buildings.
-
Great buildings. I would add some "glass" with plastic and then you can add "blinds" with coloured card and paper. Then you don't need to complete the interiors, but it will add another layer of detail that really makes scenery pop.
-
@Burgundavia: Thanks. I agree that glass for the windows would certainly add a lot as would blinds. I considered adding glass earlier, but I like being able to poke guns out the window. :) My latest notion is to add some building address numbers, and maybe some drain pipes.
-
I added another building to the cityboard. This is a Stoelzel's Structure - Market. Designed to be printed on paper and mounted on foamcore. There are 15 models in the series. This is my second, the first being the Firehouse.

-
Thank you Joe, the pictures of the Stoelzel's Structures have made my mind up to get them... :D
-
Yep, those Stoelzels look good.
I've bought 2 of their models recently.
Just don't know when I ever will build one, as I've got several other plans in the running and didn't do diddly squat last couple of weeks :?
-
@Grimrod: Thanks, I'm glad you like them, and he just released a new bank with a sliding vault door. I think that is really cool.
@zizi666: I know how that goes. So many projects...
