Well every good pulp story needs a tramp freighter, or a ex-military cargo plane to carry the heroes to who knows where; the same must be true for every good space opera. So in that effort it's taken me almosts a year and half to get this far.
The Hercules class light freighter.
Know for it's robust construction, ease of maintenance and cheap parts the Hercules class is a popular ship with many seeking a light interplanetry freighter. It's short take off and landing abilites also make it very useful in a wide range of different environments and can be seen used both smugglers and those seeking to catch them.
The model seen below is the short hulled version, which has an exceptional short take off and landing distance, but is still able to haul a good deal of freight. An up-armoured version is used by some armed forces as a light dropship where funds prohibit the use of speacialised military spec dropships.

It still needs a little finished, particularly around the rear loading ramp, but it's pretty much done. Not pretty, but it will suffice for my purposes.
The minis are 28mm from Zombiesmith.
Hope you like it,

That's really great! I always wanted to build something about this size as well, very inspiring!
-
Looks cool!
How are you planning to paint it?
-
I'm thinking a pale grey with plenty of weathering. But that said if anyones got better ideas, I'm open eyes ;)
Duncan
-
looks great! I cant wait to see it painted up

MAybe light green? :p
-
Nice! I love all the niggling little details all over the hull. Are you thinking of adding more?
BTW, what are those orange cones you used for the engine housings?
-
A jade green probably wouldn't be too bad, I'm trying to avoid camouflage like colours, but not wanting it flashy. If it's a smuggling ships they don't exactly want to draw attention to themselves.
I'm thinking of adding a few more they help breakup the surface area a bit and add a sense of depth, just need more brass strip, might try it with some left over overhead actetates I've got. And the orange/red things I've no idea I scavenged them out of the bin, I've a feeling they're used for when electrical cables run into junction boxes, but could be totally off the mark. Pity I only had the two of them, they've been sat in my bits box for years now. Finding random and useful looking bits and shapes seems to be half the job of scratchbuilding.
Duncan

Looking good.
I look forward to seeing it painted.
Well done.
-
So, any progress on the paint job? 8)
-
Missed this before. Very cool. Makes me want to finish my own.
-
Duncan, you are my hero! :o
-
I've base coated it, though unfortunately the paint bound the hinges of the rear door. So I've had to peal them off and am currently rebuilding them. I'll show more pictures when they're done.
Duncan

aww, so bad! =(
Wanna see it painted, that's very cute! :P
-
Excellent!
Looks really really good. I love scratchbuilds like this. Can't wait to see the rest.
Cheers

That's awesome!!! Can't wait to see the final result!

How do you freight light anyway!?

In refrigerators. You've got to keep the doors closed, though.

We do, we do......... ;D
-
See?
Look at all those responses! We are all panting and foaming at the mouth to see more pix!!! ;D :D ;)

I'd love to show more pictures unfortunately the hinges on the rear door are causing me a real headache and I've had to remake them at least 6 times already. The solvent in the spray painting coupled with the plastic bag which I sprayed it on (dumb idea btw) has damaged part of it, so that needs remodelling.
To say a headache not the least and I've almost abandoned it several times and would have done again of you hadnt been clamouring for an update - so Thankyou.

Can I add my voice to the clamour? Just in case there's a ratio of clamour-to-frustration that needs to be kept in positive balance?
Honestly you've no idea how many plastic bottles, tubes, caps, widgets, air-fresheners, dispensers of various medicines, parts of fans and smoke alarms and other stuff my girlfriend insists on referring to as 'bits of old crap' ::) I have lying around. Demonstrating to her that it is possible to turn such items into works of art such as your frieghter is the only way I can get away with it!
Please please persevere, it's a gorgeous construction and I'd love to see it completed.
-
Well seventh time lucky. The hinges finally work, plus I think they look better than any of the other attempts so that's nice. I've also repaired that broken bit of the hull that got damaged by the spray painting. Any here it is primed and ready for the first coat of 'proper' paint.

Door open:

Door closed and a view of the hinge. Made from plastic rod through a plastic tube, some parts glues to the door others to the hull.

And a view from the front in all it's primed glory:

Brilliant work. :-* Very inspiring.
-
What a great project, and I am so glad, as I belive many others are, that you managed to find inspiration enough to continue with this beuty of a lady. Keep it up!
-
Cudos!
Hurrah!
HIP HIP!!
Very nice, can't wait to see the final product too! Keep at it my man!
Thanx for the update!
You have inspired me and I am looking around for rubbish, grot, crap and general junk to help me build a 28mm scale Assault Scout to go with my Star Frontiers figs.
-
Very cool! Now I have to make my own...
-
Are those big windsheild wipers on the front?
-
Thanks guys. The first layers of paint will be going on later this week. It feels good to have got this far, my hobby room is littered with past half finished creations that I grew frustrated with or lost interest in, so it'll be good to add to the few finished projects.
And yes they are big windscreen wipers - landing or taking of in methane rain isn't that fun ;)
Duncan
-
Well as promised here's a WIP of the paintwork. I'm glad a perceived now that's it's starting to look like I imagined it.
More weathering, scorch marks (from re-entry) and decals to be added along with the windscreen and further detail painting
-
Brill!!!!!!!!
-
Looking good! I can't wait to see it finished.
-
I've had it finished for a while now, but first now been able to get my fingers on our camera.
Here it is landed just outside a small settlement on Amman IV - who knows what it's captain is up to?
Ah, he's supervising the unloading of a stolen EMW Z4000 hover car. It doesn't look in good condition, but favoured amongst provincial 'big men' and still fetching a good price; so it's more than likely stolen.
Here comes a truck with a precious shipment of pure H20, a valuable commodity on Amman IV, where natural aquifers are rare and jealously gaurded, most drinking water as a result comes from condensation farms. This shipment in contrast to the first is likely to be 'legal'.
Finally the crew and guards loading the shipment.
Hope you like, C&C as always welcome.

:o
Great jo, Dijit!
Really glad that you persevered with this, it has turned out splendidly well.
:-*
-
Looks great man!
-
Duncan that is fantastic !!! Brilliant work, love it :-* :-* :-* The concept, the painting. I always love it when people such as your good self, create models that one could imagine really exist. Impressive!
-
@Duncan Thanks for the great pics and the Inspiration. Great looking Paintjob by the way. I hope your work will give some new impulses for my scrathbuild spaceship.
-
You're welcome, just be sure to post pictures of it when it's done!
-
cool stuff!
who makes the crew miniatures? can we have a closer look?
-
The crew are various miniatures, but mostly from Zombiesmith:

A few of them can be seen here:

I don't currently have a picture with them all though.

MAybe light green? :p
I endorse this option!
-
THX @dijit
cool PJs
-
I like it, but as a long-time Eldar player the Falcon accessory bit strikes me...that can't be helped I suppose.
I do think it'd look a bit better with a small bubble canopy or something of the sort. Nice build though!
-
A bubble canopy would've been nice, but too much hard work. Though if you've got a simple idea on how to do one I'd love to hear it, it could be the start of a new freighter ;)
