Just joined the forum today after lurking for a few years.
I thought I'd start a Gothic Horror thread.
First up, some Westwind /Old Glory blood suckers.

Fine looking figures.
Westwind has some interesting figures.
What rules are you plannng to use?
Look forward to seeing more.
-
I used to use slightly modified Chaos in Carpathia rules.
Lately, I've been helping a buddy write up his own set of multi-genre/ universal rules so we've been playtesting them a lot.
Personally, I think Chaos in Carpathia is your best bet.
I am waiting to take a look at Empire of the Dead though.
-
Well painted, Aggro. Especially your black is very good.
-
Nice work! I like the eyes on the last one. :D
-
Very good. Distinctly menacing.
-
Thanks for the kind words!
Blacks are something that's really challenging, I'm glad you liked them.
Since that went over pretty well :)
Some Werewolves also from Westwind / Old Glory.

Welcome to the forum!
Very nicely painted minis you got there. I don't do 28mm myself, but those pics gave me some inspiration to start my 15mm Gothic project....(like I have time for that :P )
-M
-
Nice work. I like 'Em.
-
I'm pleased others' praise made you go on. The vamps are beyond my wildest dreams of accomplishment, but the puppies REALLY got me to speak up.
Well done, indeed!
Doug
-
Very well done painting ( I wish mine was that good - I quit trying to highlight and shade a long time ago because of lack of skill.)
Now I do have a quibble with the sculpts themselves - specifically the canines in certain (#3 and #5 werewolves) ones. Excessive, almost to the point of parody.
Gracias,
Glenn
-
BEAUTIFUL models! :-*
I like your painting style. Thanks for sharing your work.
About rules...
I do own CinCarpathia, but don't seem to fully fill my needs.
Any chances you can give us more information about your and your friend's home rules?
Thank you and best wishes.
-
Thanks for the kind words.
I'm happy to actually be adding to the community instead of just lurking here.
Relic- I think Blue Moon has that 15mm Gothic Miniature line. You won't regret it. Gothic Horror games are pretty fun. :)
Malamute- Thank you. Your stuff really inspired me to venture into this genre.
The Beast and Conquistador- Probably the easiest thing I do to help along the painting process is Prime in Black and then dry brush white before I start laying down any color. This method really helps me a lot.
Conquistador- Yes, some of the sculpts are pretty silly. I still enjoy them though and they were fun to paint. I also realize they are probably not every ones cup of tea. :)
Magokiron- I'm not sure what you didn't like about Chaos in Carpathia, but I rarely play a game without making a few changes. Some members here have posted some really nice add-ons for the game as well.
I've heard good things about Fear and Faith, but I'm one of the few people that didn't care for Song of Blades and Heroes which Fear and Faith is based on. I'll also talk to my friend about posting his rules.
In the mean time a few Good Guys (and girls). All Westwind/ Old Glory as well.

Hope you all like them.
-
Just one thing, sort out the pupils on the good guys, otherwise they look a little posessed! ;)
-
Yep, how Vyper said, you need the pupils. Apart from that a very good painting job on them.
-
Yes, Horses for Courses. It's your painting that should be the prime focus.
Gracias,
Glenn
-
Brilliant stuff, lovely to see the models with some paint on!
-
Great work all around. They would be welcome on my table any day.
I would strongly recommend Chaos in Carpathia. I recently playtested and revamped some objective cards that have really taken the game up a notch in our group. I can certainly email you the Word document if you want to print off your own set.
-
Thanks for the comments everyone. :)
Vyper & Prof- Yes, the eyes look weird. I touched on this topic in my Mythos thread a little.
http://leadadventureforum.com/index.php?topic=37127.0 (http://leadadventureforum.com/index.php?topic=37127.0)
I have a problem with fine detail work, and I find painting pupils really frustrating.
It is something I should definitely work on though.
Maybe when I get my EM-4 Post Apoc miniatures I'll give it another shot :)
Thank you both for the constructive criticism.
Jet- I started out playing slightly modified Chaos in Carpathia for both my Gothic Horror and Mythos games.
I loved the rules. I've also been following your blog and various threads for a while before recently joining LAF.
I have printed out and used a lot of your resources and they were great fun. Your scenery is also awesome. I'd love to play on any one of those tables.
-
Thanks a lot aggro, please see if you can talk to us about your home made rules.
Period.
What I didn't liked about CiCarpathia was that characteres seem to take soooooo looong to die, combats lasts forever!
Or maybe we just misunderstood all the combat secuence:
1.- To hit you need to get some more successes than the victim. (And need to CALCULATE all aplicable modifiers, like charging, weapons, special abilities, special rules, etc.)
2.- Then you should see by how many successes you did beat the victim's defense to CALCULATE the strenght of the damage.
3,- The victim makes a "resistance roll" trying to beat this strenght.
4.- CALCULATE the difference and substract so many life points from victim.
BUT each model has several hit points, and usually you only deduct one or two per attack.
In our first games, it were REALLY DIFFICULT to kill anybody.
As I said, we maybe just misunderstood the combat rules, but games just became very static after a while.
Period.
Anyhow, don't want to hyjack your thread.
Plase SHOW US MORE of your beautifully painted models.
Best wishes.
-
Hey Folks,
Just to clarify, I think you might have misunderstood the Damage process in CinC. Step 2 below is where you misunderstood I think. When a model is hit in CinC, it takes damage equal to the Damage Number (DN) of the weapon.
So, a Vampire with Claws (DN:5) who hits causes 5 damage. The victim of the attack rolls his Damage Resistance (DR) and, for every success he rolls, he takes one less damage than the DN. So, if a Human Hunter rolls his DR of 4 and winds up with 2 successes, he will sustain 3 damage, which is enough for a KO check.
I think you'll find that, if you ever have the interest to try the game again, combat is actually quite lethal in CinC, not the other way round.
-
Magokiron- no thread hijack here, I love talking rules. :)
I'll explain what I mean by slightly modified Chaos in Carpathia or Goalsystem.
But before I do that I just want to clarify that these were all changes I made as a personal preference.
Scott Pyle wrote a great set of rules and I don't want people to think other wise.
I dropped Fate points and added a simple Morale System.
I never used Henchmen.
I also thought it would be more fun if both players were rolling dice and comparing their accumulated Goals.
So hit tests for example looked like this:
Attackers DEX+Traits + Modifiers Vs Defenders DEX + Traits + Modifiers
and damage tests looked like this:
Attackers STR + Traits + Modifiers Vs Defenders STR + Traits + Modifiers
Tied scores went to the Attacker and attacking a wounded model was a +1 Attack Modifier.
Finally I had to modify the weapon charts accordingly to fit my rule changes.
And that's about it.
I also spoke with my buddy, and he told me he was going through and making some updates to the rules and that he'd let me know when they were ready.
Just so you know it's a multi-genre system where we mostly focused on Mythos type gaming; however, we have played VSF, Gothic Horror, Mordheim type fantasy skirmishes, Sci Fi, and even a Superhero game or two.
I'll let you know when my buddy thinks the rules are ready.
I'll also post some more minis when I get a little more time.
Damn real life ! >:(

I kinda like those pupil-less eyes. I thought of Mignola when I saw them.
While the paintjob is great, it has always been hard for me to love those Westwind werewolf miniatures. They are just...teeth. It applies to the werewolves I dig most of the other Westwind stuff.
-
I like the colors, I tend to use a bit to bright ones myself. I also have trubbles with eyes.. so tiny..
-
Sweet work! Nice to see some West Wind stuffpainted up! I used to try and paint the eyeballs but I've found it much easier to black out the eye and dot the whites around the pupil. It might seem odd at first but I really like it. :) I also use those cheap dollar store reading glasses ,they help a lot...cause I'm an old fart lol
-
Thanks Hammers, Krysset80 and inkwell.
I appreciate the comments
I think I'll continue with the fish eye look for certain types of minis.
I should try to start doing pupils at least for the female miniatures.
inkwell- thanks for the advice. I'll give that "black out the eyes first" method a try.
Also, I'm starting to get a little long in the tooth, but I still see up close pretty well :)
And for those that might be interested:
I just got the go ahead, so here's a few links for my buddy's websites and rules.

Feel free to send him any constructive comments. He loves to talk rules.

Wonderful, characterful painting - wish I could paint that well :(
The photos are large, shrink them to actual miniature size and the eyes lose their standoutishness. Better than mad, staring eyes any day of the week.
I downloaded the MEST rules. These look interesting, I shall read and try to get my head round them.
Thanks
-
Some great painting there aggro84!
Lovely PJ's bringing some really characterful miniatures to life.........or Unlife, in the case of some.
:-*

Thanks again Mason. Thanks Pauld.
Pauld, feel free to contact the author of the MEST rules with any questions or comments, likes or dislikes.

yes, and it looks good, keep up painting eyes :)

More cracking stuff, aggro!
:-*
Would love to see some more of that building.....
-
Thanks Prof!
Point taken. I've got the "eye"dea :)
Mason, I posted a pic of one off my three scratch built buildings in my mythos thread.
I'll try to take some decent photos of them soon.
In the mean time, another atmospheric pic.

Excellent stuff, keep it coming :)
-
Don't feel bad Aggro, in all the years I've been painting I don't think I have ever painted an eye that I was happy with (lot of I's in that sentence.. lol). All the stuff looks great!
-
Thanks Malamute. Thanks goon3423. :)
I'm trying to do pupils on my EM4 miniatures for my Post Apoc Project but it's been really hit and miss (mostly miss).

I haven't put up any photos in a few days, so here's Westwind's / Old Glory's elusive Victorian Gentlemen.

Nice, as always with your work.
Thanks for sharing.

Thanks Magokiron.
I got this pack as part of a package deal. Some of the sculpts are very cartoony so they took me a while to paint them all.
They aren't to bad with some paint on them.

-
Love that last guy on the bottom right! what pack did he come from?
-
Thanks goon3423,
All of these guys came from the first two Antagonists packs from the Westwind Gothic Horror line.
Each pack comes with two Vampires and two Hunters. I just can't remember who came with which pack anymore.
Unfortunately the website is little help because they just show one model from each pack.

Very nice, I like the muted colour scheme on the cossacks. They look great ;D
-
What a great collection of figures.
I'd like to get my hands on more than a few of these for myself.
-
Embarrassingly I've only just spotted this thread and have spent the last few days browsing through the Gothic goodness on display. Your prolificness both scolds and inspires a lazybones such as myself! Right, now where in the hell did I leave those Foundry Resurrectionists that I bought about six months ago...?
-
Excellent! Really enjoying these models. I especially enjoy the ones from the Antagonists packs, you don't see them too often. You've done a far better job on the sword-weilding vampire than I did. I never did figure out, is the bottom right photo with the metal neck-protector a human or a vampire. I assumed human, but it's hard to tell.
-
Thank you Malamute, Melnibonean, Funghy-Fipps and jet.
Any and all feedback is welcome and appreciated. :)

I have a habit of not letting myself buy new miniatures until, I've painted what I already have. If I didn't follow this rules, I'd probably be buried in lead by now.

For the most part you get two vampires and two human hunters per pack. So I'd say the guy with the neck guard is human.
When I used him in games, I made it more difficult for vampires to feed on him due to the neck guard.
-
Great collection of minis. Ace brushwork. :-*
-
Thanks mattblackgod. :)
-
Love the painting on the cossacks.
But come on, bury yourself in lead,
think how much fun you will have digging yourself out. :D

Brilliant paint job.
Is always a pleasure to see your work, and I'm envious of your mini collection >:D.
Thanks for sharing.
-
Great to see this thread going strong with the latest additions. :)
-
Thanks magokiron and Malamute.
I'm pretty sure I've told you before Malamute but your early Gothic Horror posts really inspired me to get into this genre!
-
Most excellent to see you still going strong. I just recently got back at it after a two-month hiatus. Last night while me and the wife watched a movie I painted a new vampire for my Nosferatu warband.
I've threated to pick up those Westwind politzi. You may push me over the edge.
-
Even with the recent price increase, Westwind / Old Glory Gothic Horror minis are still very affordable!
No excuses! Just buy em'.
A be sure to take pictures. ;D
-
Am really enjoying this thread.
Love the blue on the "cop's" uniform.
Outstanding.
-
Tese last few figures are fantastic. Great paint work.
-
Beautiful work! The polizi look fantastic.
-
Thank you Marine0846 , Melnibonean and Chairface.
I appreciate the feedback. :)
-
So I've mentioned elsewhere, as soon as I've completed my Pulp Figures for my Post-Apoc project, I'll be placing an order with our very own Professor Witchhunter.
I'm planning on picking most, if not all, of his Steampunk line.
Inspired by others like Pappa Midnight, Skrapwelder, and others I'd like to do a "City Overrun" project.
I just can't decide if I want to do Zombies:
http://leadadventureforum.com/index.php?topic=10689.0 (http://leadadventureforum.com/index.php?topic=10689.0)
or Mummies lol
(http://i1159.photobucket.com/albums/p627/aggro84/Gothic%20Horror/BackAgainstAWall.jpg)
Any thoughts on the matter?
-
Go for Mummies: zombies have been done to death.
As it were.
Anyway, your mummies already look good.
-

Yep I second that, or how abut a Vampire epidemic?
-
Mummies it is then. :D
I like the Vampire epidemic idea as well.
I'd probably use something like the Mantic ghouls if I decide to go that route..
-
why not groups of zombies, mummies, werewolves and vampires? a kind of gothic horror "Warriors".
-

I think Papa Spanky might have been referring to a Warriors themed idea a buddy of mine and I had a while back.
I'm still thinking about starting this project up as well. :D
I wanted a main infestation type critter like zombies or mummies. There's nothing to say that werewolves and vampires can't make an appearance as well. :D

Yep thats what I was reffering to :). Heres my take on mummy infestation. Zeds, Vamps and Lycans all bite, infect ect. thier victims and turn them, thereby swelling thier ranks to a number that can be respectably be called a horde or infestation. How do you get that many mummys in one place? They don't bite, they pummel, sometimes use scarabs to eat you, but the certainly dont turn you into one of them. Even if they did, they would have to take the time to wrap you in bandages otherwise your just a zombie with dry skin. I guess you could have have the infested town be middle eastern or have the mummies "bussed in" to make that many mummies in one place plausable, but it seems an unlikely scenerio. Don't get me wrong I like mummies, but I think they should be in small groups or as powerful characters.
I know, I know, I should get help because I have .... Mummy issues. ::) ;D
I still like my gothic horror Warriors idea. A group of humans trying to get through town while being hunted by gangs of nasties...
-
This is a great thread, a lovely coherent set of miniatures and enviable terrain to play it on.
Keep it up.
Go for Mummies: zombies have been done to death.
This.
I love zombies and have done for many years but they really are very overexposed at this stage.
Even if hordes of mummies behave in a very similar fashion to zombies in your games, you will still have a more memorable set of antagonists than most.
Mummies are quicker to paint too.
-
Zombies!
There, that threw a spanner in the works, didnt it?
;)
I agree that zombies have been done to death, but I always fancied doing a Z project at some point.
So, do Mummies, aggro84, I wouldnt want to clash!
As cheetor said, far easier to paint, too! :)
(Forgot to mention that your existing Mummies look fantastic. Another reason to carry on wrapping the dead.)
-
For gothic horror, mummies all the way :D
-
I appreciate everyone's input and kind words. :D
At this point I've got to go with the Mummies. :D
So finish my Pulp Figures, place an order with LAF, and order an ass-load of mummies!
Sorry Papa Spanky. :'(
I initially thought, even before posting, "Now how can I explain a Victorian City overrun by mummies" and then I thought, "Who cares? Mummies are awesome!" lol lol
-
Wow, somehow I missed this thread until now. You have a great collection going here Aggro. 8)
-
Sorry Papa Spanky. :'(
I initially thought, even before posting, "Now how can I explain a Victorian City overrun by mummies" and then I thought, "Who cares? Mummies are awesome!" lol lol
And when you paint them with as much love and detail as you paint all your models, I will suspend my disbelief, oh and ah over them and agree that indeed, mummies are awesome!
-
"Now how can I explain a Victorian City overrun by mummies"
- Untested new fangled aetheric embalming procedures have the unfortunate side effect of giving rise to bandage bound unmentionables in 15% of cases.
- Secret cult members have had the bodies of their members mummified for centuries with the specific intention of their ressurection in the late 1800s.
- Tightly wrapped body parts are elements of a perceived plague cure, only for the plague victims to subsequently rise bound in the fashion of mummies.
- etc
"Who cares? Mummies are awesome!"
That works too.
-
Now this just my own opinion or prejudice...take your pick, but I'd go for "C": none of the above. While Zombies are cool in a gross sort of way they're somewhat over used lesser undead, & Mummies are, like Vampires, the Elite of the Living Impaired, although they lack the sexy spin of the modern Dracula style blood suckers. I like the Juju style fast, at least marginally intelligent Zombie, or a create-your-own-minion style Zombi-ish creature like my Pumpkin Heads.
-
Fairies! The Victorians were obsessed with them, and I don't mean Mr Wilde. Although perhaps he was an agent of the Sidhe.
-
Thanks DFlynSqrl!
Thanks Papa Spanky!
cheetor- I like your input. I knew someone would come up with an idea to make mummies work. lol
DeafNala- Horde type vampires like the Mantic ghouls was an earlier option, but the people have spoken! Mummies! lol
Skrapwelder- I enjoyed this thread http://leadadventureforum.com/index.php?topic=30516.0 (http://leadadventureforum.com/index.php?topic=30516.0) with a faerie faction included. Maybe someday I'll do something similar. :D
I also got a chuckle out of the Wilde reference.
-
Aggro, you do some great things with the West Wind figs! And the flesh tones of your humans are really impressive. Just the right touch of pink/red in just the right spots.

Thank you for the kind words Spooktalker. :D
I'm glad you noticed the tinting. I used a watered down red around the cheeks, lips and nose and watered down dark blue for stubble (at least on the male figures).
-
I really like your setting for the horror games, and the miniatures are perfect for this, very nice. I am resisting all things 19th century, so we dont slide right in to the damnation of all wargamers... napoleonics. However, I have just been convinced to order and make a few sailors for some Hornblower skirmishes, and I can see some horror events taking place. We did try out some Pike & Shotte Zombie action, but was more of 1750 style, and it was great fun, and not to far away from this sort of... just a few more decades and we are right in to it :D
-
Thanks Galland,
If you ask me throwing some supernatural elements in to any historical miniature setting adds some flavor. :D
-
I received my LAM miniatures yesterday and they are really nice.
They are beautiful sculpts and they have been cast up very well. :-*
I've have not seen any mould lines, or other imperfections.
Normally, I'd start right in trimming off the slottas and mounting them on to metal washers.
However, some of the miniatures are in some really dynamic poses where they are leaning forward running.
I'm worried they won't be secure with their slottas removed.
Now I'm debating a partial slotta removal, leaving bits behind to stick into putty, or just purchasing some nice slottas and mounting them onto those.
The nice slottas would look good and be the most sturdy; but so far all of my miniatures have been based somewhat consistently onto metal washers.
Decisions decisions. ::)
-
That's what I did to the bases on some. I trimmed it a bit and then flattened the portions away from the feet with pliers. Glued to a washer and then covered in green stuff to make a cobblestone base.
-

Yes, I saw that. While I was waiting for my minis to show, I downloaded a bunch of photos from the forum of peoples LAM figures to inspire me (steal ideas from). ;D
I decided to trim down the slottas and mount them on washer bases built up with Sculpey.
Now I need to decide if I want to try to sculpt out brick work/cobblestone or go for the standard (outdoor) basing I've been doing.
-
I did some test carving into one of the bases. About 10 minutes work and just a quick black wash to get an idea what the finished bases might look like.
Looks okay I guess. I'm still on the fence about this though.
Regular bases or cobblestone? :?
-
Looks more like crazy paving to me, I'm afraid.
If you want cobbles from Sculpey, the best way is to make a mould from some existing cobbled surface and use that as a stamp.
Failing that, you could try what I did for my "Holmes" bases: cut a cocktail stick in half, and drill a hole in the middle of the resulting flat surface. Trim round the outside with a scalpel to make the rim as thin as possible. Lubricate, and press into the putty or clay to make individual cobbles.

Agreed. :D

Both are good ideas, unfortunately a little late now. :'(
I'll try a brick pattern next and if I don't like those results any better I'll just go with my standard basing technique.
-
I tried a brick pattern.
It looks a lot better and was easier to do; however, I'll need to putty over the exposed slotta bits.
I'm getting closer and closer to just going with my standard basing for consistencies sake but I want to make sure I've weighed my options.

easier than trying to cover the slotta tab is to cut it, so you're left with two thin pegs under the feet, then drill into your base, using the pegs from the slot tab as pins.
the brick pattern does look better :)

Oh yeah, Skrapwelder suggested this

I thought I knew what he was talking about but but apparently I didn't.
This will help a lot if I decide to go with a brick pattern.
Thanks guys. :D

A small update. I've had these three weeks and this is all I managed to get done.
Not that great of photos either I'm afraid. It's too sunny outside so I tried a few indoor shots.

LOVELY STUFF ALL OF IT!
Keep It Going!
-
Superb - love 'em 8)
-
Good work. The distressed slabs on the bases work. Are those all LAF minis?
-
Lovely work, aggro!
Those bases really work, a nice touch.
:-*
A small update. I've had these three weeks and this is all I managed to get done.
You embarrass me, my friend.
I have had my LAM figures for over a year now, and they are still in the blisters!
Some may well make it into my Strange Aeons project, just to get some finished.....
They look great.
You are making me want to paint mine.
At last...
-
Nice job on the LAM's - hard to resist those figures.
-
Well they look jolly good. Nice painting :)
-
Thanks everyone for the kind words. :D
I'm glad the bases went over well with everyone.
Good work. The distressed slabs on the bases work. Are those all LAF minis?
Yep! they are all LAM miniatures.
You embarrass me, my friend.
I have had my LAM figures for over a year now, and they are still in the blisters!
I think you have had a more productive last three weeks than I have. ;D
-
Nice work, the bases look great.
(Got myself a few LAM mini's to paint up as a Sons of the Empire Gentlemens faction.)
Look forward to seeing more.
-
Very nice work.
I have to get myself some LAF figure sometime soon.
-
I just wandered through the thread...again. This is going to be my motivation for the day. VERY WELL DONE!
-
Thank you gentleman. I appreciate the feed back. :D
I'm pleased to hear I have inspired some folks.
-
My next batch of LAM/ Steampunk/ VSF miniatures.
I still have the bases to finish.

On a sad note, I managed to screw up some of my Victorian city terrain while I was trying to repair it.
The three bases for my buildings are basically ruined at this point. :'(
The Styrofoam buildings I made are really fragile and need constant repairs.
I'm considering different terrain options at this point. Something sturdier...
-
Lovely mini paints there sir, just not into those bases at all sorry.
What's next?
-
What's next?
More LAM minis. :D
-
:-*
I think they look terrific!
And I bet the bases come out just fine. ;)
-
I love this thread and these minis. West Wind has been under rated for years but I love virtually all of it. And LAM is such beautiful accompaniment. Great stuff all around.
I like that the gents are all in dark or black clothing. So many of those Victorian London crowd photos show mostly conformity in dress, mostly blacks and grays. Maybe greater variety in head gear than we've seen modeled but basically black was de riguer in the late 1880's and beyond.
-
They are all BEAUTIFULLY painted & based as befits some fantastic pieces. VERY WELL DONE!
One of the appealing features of your color choices is a profusion of grey haired Gents...something I can identify with. There's no one as feisty as a Feisty Old Man...ask any of my female acquaintances.
-
Sorry for not posting sooner.......
Very, Very nice collection of toys you have there! Excellent mini selection and A1 painting. :-*
" Zombies have been done to death" made me giggle....
Love the mummies (although they are gift wrapped zombies) and agree they make for an unusual "infestation".
I was pondering a "Primeval" style dinosaur outbreak with time portals opening up all over London as a result of a failed time travel experiment. I can just see a group of velociraptors causing havoc in Whitechapel.........T-Rex loose in Kensington Gardens...... Sorry I'm going to dig out my dino collection lol
Look forward to seeing more.
Regards
PM
-
Thanks guys for all of the kind words! :D
I really tried to limit the color palettes even more than I would normally.
I was really inspired by Pappa Midnight's VSF thread when I painted these guys.
Although I can't do goggles like he does. :'(
DeafNala, I agree, I think grey hair and beards looks really good on minis. :D
I wanted to do mummies, but I was having a hard time finding a place were I could get 30 or so reasonably priced mummies.
I was planning on settling on Mantic ghouls for this project (even though I really prefer mummies).
Pappa Midnight's Dinosaur idea has me thinking now.
Dinosaurs AND Mummies invade London? Sounds like a wacky Dr. Who episode. ;D
-
I'm calling these suckers 90% done.
I'll probably go through them all one by one and make a few minor changes and touch ups before matte varnishing them.
A few new additions.

Now I just have 10 LAM Ottomans to paint!
-
Lovely collection of mini's and great standard of painting.
Look forward to seeing more, thanks for posting.
Cheers BF :)

Lovely collection!
I really like the earth toned look of it all.

Superb painting and lots of awesome miniatures, gotta get some of those armed with whacky weapons myself for EotD!

What a great picture!
I especially like that they are all in appropriately sombre tones, and yet each miniature still has a splash of colour or a bright spot that draws your eye to it. :)
-
Looking good, aggro, looking good!
The previous shots have been great, showing them off as individuals, but a group shot always looks amazing and really shows the progress you have made.
Well done, Sir!!
-
I LOVE the Group Portrait...the dog in gas mask is a favorite. VERY WELL DONE!
-
Thanks Big Frank, Dr the Viking, Anatoli, Major_Gilbear , Mason, and DeafNala. :D
I was really inspired by Papa Midnight when I painted these.
The only exceptions were the Alice and Mad Hatter figures.
Looking at them with the other minis, I'm tempted to darken them up too. ;D
-
Really nice mate, I've been sucked into EotD as well. Need to raise some funds to get the rules and sets though.

Haven't we all, infernally infectious my good man, now if you will excuse me....
Jenkins pass me the lupine incapacitatory implement, and be quick about it, I think rover is making for the catflap again!

Thanks Brummie Thug and Vyper. :D
Vyper, get busy on your Chinese Faction. ;D

Here's a couple scale comparison shots. There's been a few requests.
Both shots are GW, Blue Moon, LAM, Westwind, Foundry, and Old Glory.
Sadly all the base heights aren't quite the same height but you probably get the idea.

thanks for the comparison shots - very useful. Perhaps a sabot base will raise up the foundry figures enough to make them fit in better.

Sterling Moose, if you ask me the Foundry miniatures are a little small but very comparable. Given them a little bit of a lift would probably make them look even closer to the other sizes. :D

Yeah silly arse all there. I ordered some police inspectors, bobbies and gaslamps from the old range with my rule book, all still in cast and all repacked with EoTD logos.
If anyone gets the vampires through the ages set and doesn't want the chinese vamp let me know cheers.

The Silly Arse stands corrected ;D ;D ;D
Thanks fellas though these where the same as the Great White Games sets VH
In all fairness there are no pics on the WW site and the one figure I wouldn't have guessed from him

I wouldnt mine extra Sets of the Rippers miniatures, but I ain't paying silly S&H LoL!

I never understood how a lot of mini companies follow this business model, where they want you to buy their figs, but then they don't even bother putting photos of them up on their websites. >:(

That I can't help you out with Van-Helsing. :)

Drew - drop Andy at Old glory UK a line. From what I recall, he charges VAT, but has a low UK shipping tariff - Should bring them out to be about £19 a pack + 10% postage....

Not much to report. :'(
Here's a slightly better photo of the LAM miniatures I have completed so far.

Now I'm wondering what to do next (after I complete the Ottomans of course).
There's so many great minis out there it's hard to stay focused. ;D
-
So all of this talking about EotD terrain got me thinking.
I broke out my terrain and took a look at it today for some brainstorming and observations.
I currently have three main scratch built buildings and a few outbuildings
(http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-dowwpo4O4Oc/UANiKYcr5eI/AAAAAAAAAcw/sEs1vKV7JVI/s1600/Build01.JPG)
I originally had walled bases for all of them. Shown here:
They were warping pretty bad, so in an effort to repair the warping, I completely destroyed them. :'(
But looking at it now maybe it wasn't such a bad thing. It's nice to able to place the buildings closer together or arrange them in different configurations.

One of the nice things I did was make all the roofs and levels removable. Here's a photo of the buildings spread out.

Here's my outbuildings. The small one was my original test piece.
I bought this building for a few bucks. looking at it next to the other buildings it's way to small and of no use sadly.
Finally this is a building are started several months ago but never finished.
It looks pretty funky. I must have been drinking. :D
(http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-gWJbMrZnmk8/UANihPTXBkI/AAAAAAAAAeI/1nsHs6a9ffQ/s1600/Build12.JPG)

Nice. I like the old bases, the ones you got rid of, but maybe they were a bit on the thick side. The pavement and the gas lamps looked good. The new building could be spruced up by overlaying card 'bricks' over the current frame.
-

I didn't get rid of them. I accidentally destroyed them. :'(
So now I'm left wondering what to do now.
The foam buildings look pretty good. They are cheap to make and I like being able to remove the roofs and levels.
If I stick to this style, I'll need to make some more brick walls and possibly make new bases for them.
On the bad side. Some of my cuts were really wonky. ;D
Foam isn't the easiest stuff to work with. Also, they are really fragile. They constantly need touching up as the edges rub off and little chips are created just during normal packing and unpacking.
There's some pretty nice MDF stuff being made these days. The prices aren't typically bad, but generally you can't separate the levels.
I'm curios to see what Skrapwelder comes up with in his new resin buildings venture. :D
-
If you move to foamboard completely invest in a good metal ruler, sharp blades and lay off the grog when constructin, (;)) you'll poduce some nice clean vic buildings. either print clad them or plasticcard. I like your first buildings, but a bit too charactured for me.
The Commander
-
I like the look of those buildings! nice & moody look to them
-
Well, if you enjoy making terrain, then I'd suggest you continue to do so rather than buy the MDF stuff - especially if it enables you to make it how you want. :)
I would move over to using Foamcore or Depron for your constructions though; the insulation foam you use is notoriously delicate. :?
Finally, if you're starting again, I'd suggest making the brickwork smaller/finer; either print and clad or use embossed plasticard as Commander Vyper suggests, or emboss the material directly yourself (if Depron; if Foamcore, it's doable but more work). I would also think about making the windows less "medieval-fantasy" too. This would give the buildings a more obviously Victorian/brownstone/industrial revolution feel, and would be more in keeping with most Victorian/Steampunk/VSF settings.
-
I like them!
They remind me of the old Universal Horror Movie sets! (which to me can only be a good thing)
-
I really like your buildings, they have a great character all of their own.
The fact that you have made the interiors usable is an added bonus.
I vote that you continue in your current style, as mixing styles may not work too well.
I can see where the other opinions are coming from with their suggestions, but as you already have several great buildings, it would be a shame to waste them.
Regarding the foam getting damaged: Maybe giving them a coat of Wood Glue mixed with your undercoat/primer layer before painting them would both seal them and give them a little more strength.
Regarding your new plastic building: That quite obviously does not match your own work too well.
Just pack it up and send it to me.
I will save you from wasting your time with it!
;)

Yeah, I didn't want them to be too Victorian looking so I could use them for different genres. They really are more of a fantasy/ creature feature style. I appreciate all the advice especially the foamcore / plasticard advice (except for Vyper's no grog suggestion. :D )

Any good tutorials for Foamcore, Depron, Embossed Plasticard brick work buildings out there? :D

This guy does some amazing work in those mediums. You might need to translate the site tho. As for your buildings , I think they look great without the bases.
-
Firstly, I think your buildings look really cool, vey atmospheric. Reality is not always the best, your buildings have a certain 'bent' quality that makes them spooky. I just finished a ton of pulp cairo terrain. Did Cairo actually look like that? Not really but it looks good. I've used some plastic card bricks and so long as you find the right glue it works really well. It also stands up better than styrofoam. A Lot of my early Mos Eisley terrain needs to be constantly repaired. The problem with this site is the amazing quality of work. It really pushes you. I did something with my bases/sidewalks but I used painted matting instead. I hovers only slightly above the board.
You could always go the Plasticville / r oute like me. ;D

Bookmarked! Thanks a lot. :D

Thanks Old Ben! I'm actually planning on making some middle eastern style terrain similar to what you did. There's a timeless quality to those building that work in just about any genre. :D

@Mason - a Public Service announcement?
;)
Of course!
;)

I thoroughly agree with Oldben 1.
Your buildings have a distinctive character of their own, hence they work in so many different ways.
The 'suggestion' of Victorian makes them work in that period.
If you build too realistically, it just limits what you can use your scenery for.
A Lot of my early Mos Eisley terrain needs to be constantly repaired.
Oldben 1: That is one of my planned projects for next year.
Do you have a link to any pictures of yours?
I really like your stuff and am looking for ideas.
:)
Thanks buddy! Let me check with someone first and if they don't want it I'll send it to you. :D
:o
I was being cheeky, but if you do want to sell it on then I am definitely up for it.
Cheers!
:D

Late as usual...I really love your buildings/scenery; they have a wonderful feel to them that is uniquely your own. Ergo, I feel (it's too early in the day for thinking) you should continue with your own style. The things you've created are just too lovely to be limited by other Folk's ideas...including mine.
-
Fantastic buildings! I love the unique and creepy look of them. Well done.
-
Thanks DeafNala and Troll.
I'm going to try to get a little work done this weekend.
I'm hoping to at least make some walls to replace the one's I destroyed.
-
I managed to get a little painting in this week.
Some Brigade Games Gangsters. They need some touch ups and basing.

A particularly nice looking bunch of ne'er do wells.
Very nice indeed.
:-*
Welcome back to the fold.
;)
-
Thanks Mason. I have been eyeballing these minis since I first saw them years ago.
-
Nicely done Aggro. They all look gritty nice one!
-
VERY NICELY DONE! I'm glad you had some painting time; the Gang looks TERRIFIC. They remind me of The Gangs of New York or that new BBC America show, Copper.
-
Thanks DeafNala and Brummie Thug.
These fellows were released soon after Gangs of New York was released. The line has many proxies from the movie I ordered and have yet to paint up.
I've been watching Copper. I have mixed feelings about it, but I'll keep watching it anyways.
It's still way better than most of the stuff you see on basic cable. :D
-
I didn't get much work done this week.
These still need basing and touch-ups.

I really like the new additions...cool minis &, even pre-touch-up, very nicely painted. While my stuff tends toward the gaudy look, I do appreciate subtle colors. WELL DONE W.I.P.!
On Copper: I've been tuning in occasionally. I love the costumes & the sets, but I'm dependent on closed captioning & theirs is rather poor. Ergo, I haven't quite got the story line straight. SO I've been making up my own dialogue, plots, et al as I watch...it's now a comedy show.
-
Thanks DeafNala!

Got these fellows started.

I don't know how you keep the pace up! Cracking work sir!
-
Not much to update. A few more WIPs.

The chap in the middle's net broke off when I was cleaning him. Now, I guess he walks quickly and carries a small stick.
-
Nice to see you are keeping the output up.
Very nice.
Where are these fellas from?

I may have a future need for them.....
-
Mason, they are Brigade Games, Victorian Age, Tong.

I am really admiring your approach to darker colours.
-
Thanks Mason. :D
-
I finished these models! More or less. :D

This is such great work! Really inspiring.
That table a few pages back is the ideal size, I reckon. Maybe some building facades around the outside will create a more "claustrophobic" look.
Your palette is great, too. Nice and dark.
Plus, I am just about to buy some Tong (from Obelisk) to use as a gang for EotD against my wife. You might have seen the same photo in the EotD rulebook?
Anyway, keep it up!! :-* :-* :-*
-
Thanks Christian!
Yeah, I like the 36 x 36 board for skirmish gaming. I am planning a sort of exploration game using a bigger table though. I had some walled yards that I accidentally ruined a few months ago. I made some new ones, I just have not painted them yet.
Ill just say, I have put a lot of thought into developing a color palette. I have a hard time with detail work, so I have too make up for it somehow!
I love those Obelisk tong! Someday ill have to order some. :D
Haven't seen the pic in the EotD rule book though.
-
I managed to get some terrain painted this weekend!
I finally replaced my brick walls that I use to make small courtyard areas for my buildings.
I also made some stone walls and painted another building.
The paintjobs are all "table ready" but they do need a lot of details tidied up.

Thank you.
-
Nice work, aggro!
As you know, I really like your distinctive style of buildings.
:-*
-
Thanks buddy!
They aren't up to the standards of many folks here on the forum.
But I'll admit they have some whimsical charm. :D
-
Wow! Really love that building. Looks a bit like a Cornish tin mine :)
Must get the Not Gangs Of New York sculpts... Like you, i'd been eyeing them for years. Now I can add a few of them to the Whitechapel Gun Club :)
-
Thanks Captain Blood,
I almost don't want you to get those Victorian Gangsters, because you will undoubtedly put mine to shame! ;D
