Dear Reader,
Terrible news has been announced concerning the deaths of both Sherlock Holmes and Dr Watson whilst undertaking the investigation of a case concerning our national secuirty.
You will recall the home sceretary recently mislaid secret plans and maps detailing our strategies in the ongoing war with Prussia. ( It is widely rumoured he lost the plans whilst in the company of the delightful Miss Fanny Fitznizentight, a socialite of dubious ancestry...)
And so was set the scene for our annual Christmas game. The scenario involved the recovery of these missing documents somewhere in the Limehouse area of old London.Various groups were attempting to find the plans and either return them to the government or use them for their own nefarious gain.
The players included:-
A group of shadowy government agents; the men in black bowler hats.
Professor Moriarty and followers.
The Harmes gang, a group of Prussian sympathisers.
A band of Prussian agents.
Holmes and Watson aided by the Baker Street irregulars and various Bobbies and civilians.
All the players had a starting base on the table and were given clues as to certain locations on the table to visit to pick up further clues as to the location of the plans.
Each turn the players were also allowed to move a certain number of civilain figures who may, or may not be characters belonging to each player. This allowed each person the opportunity to disguise his own movement and hide his true figures from the other players by pacing decoy figures around the table.
The action played out as follows;
All the players eventually established the location of the plans hidden in the Ten Bells pub. Holmes was disguised as a drunk and trailed Moriarty in a Hanosm cab.
The Government agents the " Men in black bowler hats secured the plans first and then tried desparately to return to government HQ without losing them.
At this point all hell was let lose as The Harmes gang, the Prussian agents and Moriarty all revealed themselves and attempted to steal the documents.
During the action Holmes threw off his disguise and went to the aid of a small group of policemen who were under fire from the Prussian agents. Armed only with whistles and truncheons they were not fairing well. Holmes entered the figting firing his revolver until it unfortunately jammed. He was subsequently charged by the dastardly Prussians and went down under a mass of bayonets!
Watson unaware of the demise of his friend rushed Moriarty's carriage just as he was preparing to exit the table with the captured plans. Fortune favoured Watson with a fluke number of moves with successive movement cards drawn for the card deck. He shot Moriarty's driver and then proceeded to fire his revolver repeatedly into the carriage killing Colonel Sebastian Moran(Moriarty's right hand man) in the process.
Unfortunately his luck eventually ran out as he was killed by the blast from a shotgun fired by one of Moriarty's thugs.
The Harmes gang was defeated as their leader was shot early on and the remaining gang members fled the table.
The Prussians were eventually surrounded by a combined force of police, Men in bowler hats and a unit of guards stationed at the nearly palace.
Moriarty thought victory was in sight as he was one move from the exit point when a government agent shot his remaining thugs one of whoom was carrying the plans. Rather than risk attempting to pick up the fallen documents Moriarty fled.

A combined force of civilians and goverment agents see off the dastardly Prussian agents.

You have such a beautiful victorian age table mate. Absolutely beautiful...
I will move to Blighty :)

The green devil of envy is gnawing at my innards. Wonderful...
-
that's obscene!
-
Absolutely inspiring. Such a gorgeous table.
Not Holmes AND Watson....
-
You must stop this madness at once!
Might I suggest that upturned shoe boxes with windows drawn on them make perfectly acceptable (and cheap) wargames buildings. Writing Victorian street names on them will give a genuine 'English' feel to the whole layout.
Please feel free to send me all your existing scenery so that you'll have room for your new, soon-to-be-made buildings.
Thanks :)
-
Oh, and since you'll be parceling stuff up, you may as well send me all your Dracula things too.
A super Transylvania table can be made by piling old tea caddies up and covering them with Christmas wrapping paper (so long as it has trees printed on it).
:)
-
Top hole simply top hole old chap :D  :)
-
Fantastic! Awesome terrain! It's really a piece of art.
What rules set do you use?
-
Damn... just beautiful!! I'M WORTHLESS, I'M WORTHLESS!!
Are these Buildings selfmade?

If you write the names in different languages on scraps of paper, then blu-tack them to the buildings, you can change the nationality by simply swapping, say Victorian English for Samurai Japanese, 15thC Swiss or Wild West Mexican.
Voila! Instant, high quality multi-functional scenery.
Always works for me.....

I don't know what was more of a turn-on, trying to picture Ms. Fanny "Fits nice and tight" or the overhead shot of your table. :P
-
Absolutely stunning!
Will you be running any demo games at any shows in the future?
-
wow!!!!!!!!!! the scenery looks excellent!!!! it looks like you had a fun game, amazing stuff
-
So beautiful! So beautiful! I want to be 28mms tall and live there!

Malamute designed and built the real London as well.
Fantastic stuff.
-
Excellent scenery. You, Sir, are an inspiration!!!
-
More Ooohh's and Aaaah's from me :)
And a technical question: are these brick storage buildings printed cardstock? If not, could you write up some painting tutorial? Please?
-
Add me to the 'green with envy' list.
Great terrain and an excellent scenario Nick.
-
Thanks for the comments folks.
The buildings were all made by the nice guys at TM Terrain, so all the credit goes to them. They are plastic brick sheets over foamcore. Some of the detailing like doors and windows are from the Grandt Line of railway accessories.

Fantastic! Awesome terrain! It's really a piece of art.
What rules set do you use?
We use the very unpopular Gothic Horror/Vampire Wars rules. We like the card based random movement and quality dice system. :)
-
Sometimes I just want to give up.... That was amazing :o :o :o
-
SUPERB !!
-
This is very nice scenery You have there, Malamute!

...oh, and a very interesting gaming report, btw :D
-
I don't know what was more of a turn-on, trying to picture Ms. Fanny "Fits nice and tight" or the overhead shot of your table. :P
That's probably a product of your naughty imagination.
-
WOW. What a fantastic Victorian table!!
-
Oh my heavens....
Work of art. Absolute genius. Five stars on all counts: Figures, scenery, and scenario. I doff my toque.

Bit of serious threadomancy going on here. We played this game in 2007... lol
-
Stunning, sir, truly stunning! :o :-*
-
Great table, fantastic buildings. Did you make them all by yourself? Or did you use resin-buildings?

It's like looking at an old photograph. How young and carefree you all were back then!
::)
-
Would love a set of plans for that green fronted building (theatre?)
-
Got any plans for a Christmas Gothic Horror Extravaganza this year, Nick?
-
Got any plans for a Christmas Gothic Horror Extravaganza this year, Nick?
Not Gothic this year, it's a Texas Revolution all day extravaganza next week.(No surprises there I guess ;) lol)
Seeing these photos again have given me the urge to write some new scenarios and get this stuff out again. One of the reasons We haven't gamed this is recently is I have had serious writers block with coming up with plot ideas to continue our campaign. :?
I can't take any credit for the buildings, they were mostly built by TM Terrain, although I did paint lots of the figures, which Is something I haven't done much of this year. :(
-
How lovely it would be to take the Chicken Race on the Arumbaya out for a spin this Christmas. Alas, we are going away and the gaming matte measures 2 by 3 meters and weighs a metric tonne.
-
It is alot of fun to see old threads come back to life.
Maybe there should be a best of old threads once a month. :D

I go back and look at old favourites now and then on my own initiative. On the other hand I know what I am looking for.

Oh, I am sooo glad of the threadomancy!
If it had not happened I would have missed this lovely feast of goodness.
Lovely scenery, figures and concept.
Great inspiration for those of us about to enter the 19th century!
Love it!
:-* :-*

Oh, I am sooo glad of the threadomancy!
...
Speak for yourself; it hurt the first time I saw it, long before I signed on with the good Prof, and it hurts still. Hurts so bad...
Okay, too lovely to hold that kind of grudge. REALLY awesome, still. Thanks, Nick.

utterly utterly stunning!

Can't possibly have been Sherlock, because that can't possibly have been London. Water came in many wonderful colours like green, red, or yellow, but it most certainly didn't come in blue.
Kidding aside, amazing urban scenery. The amount of work in that board is truly stunning.
-
This is impressive.
What rule system do you use for the game?
-
I love it! Really a delight to view. Thanks so much for posting. Richard

This is impressive.
What rule system do you use for the game?
A stripped down version of the Westwind Vampire Wars rules.
-
Very nice indeed. :D
