Title: The Gray Haven project (updated 01-19-2014) more buildings and stuff pg. 4
Post by: Papa Spanky on January 30, 2012, 09:17:02 PM
*** UPDATE!! I've decided to call this the Gray Haven Project, as it will be a progress of all the things I build for my town of Gray Haven. Hopefully this town will be the future site of many zombie, monster and gangfights so I thought it should get a proper name. ***

A while ago <a href="http://leadadventureforum.com/index.php?topic=35602.msg417556#msg417556" style="color: #CC0000">I posted this[/url] as a basis for a building. Heres a pic of how its going so far:

I have a second building almost ready for paint, a warehouse that will be a shipping business.

I haven't decided on a name yet, possibly "Broken Things Shipping" or 'Welos-Yerstuf Shipping". (think about it) Let me know if you have any suggestions.

I re- did the poop roof on the first building, it looks so much better. This building will be the home of Hydrcorp, a fictional corporation, because everytime I finish a detail, two more pop up and demand attention.

I also put in the front door.

Looking good, Papa.

What's the plastic of those crates like to work with?

How about Fedex?
Covers both those options.

Impressive level of building detail you are going for. Well done.

@ Steve F - Its not too bad, I would not exactly call the sides square, the plastic  tends to warp and bow a bit. It is thin but not to brittle and it cuts and sands nice. I will be using kryolon plastic paint when I paint it, as I'm not sure how it will take regular paint.

A little update on my town-
I added a few cars to populate the streets of Gray Haven.
The regular cars were weathered and sealed with matte clearcoat. For me the matte finish seems to go better with the scale.
The police cars were total repaints with custom rub on star transfers. They say Gray Haven Police, but it didnt photo well. The humvees were just re coated after the star was applied.

I got a little more work done on my town of Gray Haven in the last few days. This is the first board section; right now three are planned. The base is a 2'x 4' Homasote board. I bought a bunch of it a long time ago when it was dirt cheap. Now that its considered a trendy green material, the cost has risen to the lofty heights of all things green. Bah.

I used 5/16th" rolled cork to make the sidewalks. I experimented a bit with the best way to put in the crack lines.  I tried cutting out individual blocks and giving the edges a slight bevel, vs cutting in the groove with a wood burner. The wood burner is easier, but the individual blocks has the best look. I'm still undecided on which I will use in the other boards.

The roads are drywall compound smoothed over the Homasote in the areas where the roads go. Curbs are thin strips of cork with one edge rounded.
(Stormtroopers keep watch on a traffic stop. These guys will end up as part of my Monster Hunters International squad in the future.)

In these pictures you can see how the buildings fit into their locations and the bases fit nicely against the sidewalk. I will make other "scenery" that will use the same footprint so I can change out buildings, add ruins etc. to keep these boards as universal as possible. I painted and weathered some before I realized I had forgotten drains and sewers.

To remedy that, I made some to be cast and installed at a later time. I guess its good I have construction barriers planned then! Also starring in these pictures is my homemade street light. I'm going to cast the base, I just haven't decided if I should just cast the whole thing or not. It still needs some work, anyhow.

Go build something,

Papa Spanky

Looks great! Very inventive use of materials, with fantastic gaming potential. Love the vehicles.

Glancing at the title, I thought this was going to be a Lord of the Rings "Grey Havens" terrain board.

Busy, busy, busy. I have lots of things going on, but I will skip the booring day to day stuff and get right to the really important things : updates and pictures! I've mad a little progress on my town, mostly on exspansion. I press molded the drains and sewers; the drains turned out ok, the sewers not so much. So now I'm waiting for my mold making order to arrive so I can make good copies of those.

You can see the middle board has some curbs and drains going in, the far board has just had its streets paved.

I had a corner that was a bit too small for a building, So I created a simple grassy knoll to fill in.

I added a not yet finished Plasticville Post Office to be used as a... post office!

And then finally the almost finished first board with all its building elements in place...

Looks great so far.

Clever use of the green plastic crate panels, inspired!
They work fantastically well.
I will be watching this with much eagerness.

The roads look great, I particularly like the parking lot idea.

Yep, that's looking good - like the road surface a lot, and the buildings are very nice - the use of that green plastic is inspired! I'm taking notes for my own Road Wars/Battlecars/Car Wars project (which isn't going to happen anytime soon, but still...).

Welcome back to another update! A while back on my blog, I reviewed Demo's Laser Cut Design four Pack of Shops (http://demoslaser-cutdesigns.weebly.com/index.html) . Well, I finally got them painted up. Right now they are a bit empty, but they will acquire more furnishings over time. Ganger Maddie from the Eschers will be my stand in model for my pictures. (don't ask how she got out of the hive and into the past, shes sensitive about that...)

I arranged the buildings in a strip mall style, but varied the fronts. This is typical of towns in the Midwest that have older buildings re purposed into stores. The owners of each unit are free to make their store look how they want. I also did this to show that with a little work, you can make these boxy buildings really unique. I used acetate for windows and door glass.

The back of the mall. I haven't done much decorating here, as this sits right on the board edge. That strip on the ground is wide enough for a model, but that's about it.

The insides. I painted and weathered and even tried my hand at using scrapbook paper here.

This shop is the Good or Bad Pub. Watch out for the spirits. In this town, that could mean just about anything. I named it this because I have an idea that this could be used as a accorded neutral ground for supernaturals, humans and the like. It might make for a good storyline and a reason for sides to be fighting, like a truce meeting between vamps and werewolves that went bad, and it spilled out into the streets.
Anyway, I modded this building by simply putting a strip of brick styrene on the lower half.

Next in line is Non Electronic Rolled Dice Games . Owned by my so-far-only resident Hanna Jablonski, it is one of the few places in town were people can go to learn about the supernatural.
I did this building by adding a parapet and painting it with stone textured spray paint and many weathering washes. The parapet was made from the unused bases that came with the model. A word of caution with these buildings, (or any unsealed MDF)  I was pretty heavy handed with the liquid in the washes and swole up some of the MDF. This caused problems with the joints and the roof not fitting properly. I repaired it, but do be careful and learn from my mistake.

Nuclear Subs is up third. Stop in for a bite, just stay away from the hot peppers.
Again I modified this building with a simple strip of styrene brick, in a different type.

Lastly is Milas flowers. I was listening to a podcast called "Fetidus" and there was a character named Mila in it. I like it and used it, as it seemed a nice name for a flower shop owner.
This was the hardest modification of all four. I made a stepped parapet from the base material and had to fully cover two sides of the building with clap board styrene sheet, as this is a end unit.

As a parting shot, here are some of the details I'm working on. Flower bushes and potted mums for the flower shop. Mums? Yes, I decided I wanted Gray Haven to have a nice fall setting. Kind of a creepy time of year, perfect for all the nasties that will be around.
Time to go, before Maddie does some pruning with that chainsword. Thanks for looking!

Until next time,
Papa Spanky

I love the extra work that has gone into the new buildings.
It has really given them their own individual character whilst retaining the 'block build' look.

You are doing great with the board, I do love coming back for another look now and then, even without an update.

Thanks magokiron.
A while back I mentioned I was going to sculpt and cast my own sewers and drains. I even sculpted some and cast a few drains. Well, I wasn't really happy with the casts and the sewer covers were just too big. So I used the few cast drains I had and set about scratch building something new everything.
This is the drain. its simple four pieces of wire glued to plastic card and cut into the street and curb.

Here is the sewer cover. This is a small plastic button used to cover screw holes in furniture. I drilled holes and inscribed circles to add some detail.

a few more shot for your viewing pleasure.

Now this will get cast somehow, sometime. Its an empty dumpster with lids. I want to make a few and model them either full, empty, lids open or closed, with zombies in them, etc.

Actually, Ive been down with a cold the past few days so it was a good time for some postings.

An aerial shot of all three boards together. From here you can see all the drains, sewers and weeds I added, as well as the no parking zones.

A closer look at the grass median. The trees are real branches and the bushes are Woodland Scenics HO trees. The grass itself is fake rabbit, or teddy bear fur, first seen here (http://leadadventureforum.com/index.php?topic=40068.msg468238#msg468238). (Well Dijit, are you pleasantly suprised?   lol ) I finished it off with Silflor grass clumps for weeds and fall colored scatter from Woodland Scenics.

Another view of the median, I like this shot.

An overview of everything as it is so far. The area behind the PD/ FD will be an open fenced area with maybe a radio tower in it or parking. The other areas are still open for building suggestions. Obviously a gun store is a must. I was also thinking of a small market or convenience  store. I will show off the Hydracorp building at the top later.
More pics and building info over at my blog.

Title: Hydracorp building finished
Post by: Papa Spanky on August 13, 2012, 03:33:05 AM
I finished this the other day: The Hydracorp building.
Hydracorp is a highly secretive multi-billion dollar company. So when they bought and renovated an old office building in a small mid-western town, no one knew why.  Hummers, equipment for the local police department and millions to the local chamber of commerce each year guarantees  no one asks.

For those that don't remember, this building started out as a collapsible storage crate from the dollar store.

Front and back shots. I lined the windows and front door with frosted vinyl file separators.
The back door opens. It was a pain to do, but it works.

This is the second floor office cubicles. I say this building is done, but it really need furniture and decor. That I will add over time, but for now its game ready.

The second floor lifts off to show the... empty first floor! At least you get a good shot of the backdoor and the stairs.

The outside sidewalk and lawn. The tree and bush are removable for storage. I tried to get the tree to look like it had that landscape ring cut around it to hide that it was on a base. I used herbs mixed with PVA to make the mulch.

I'm pretty happy with this build, even though it was a lot of work.

More to follow,
Papa Spanky

Very nice indeed! It perfectly captures that almost Art Deco feel of this type of building, and the colour choice really finishes it off. And you are right; it does need some interior. A reception desk to begin with I'd say (which should be easy enough to do. But since it's already useable for gaming, I'm sure that will end up on the back burner for years. You know; like placing the trimming after laying a laminate floor... ;)

Was it difficult to keep the parts of the crate together once you seperated the floors? I like the idea of the tubes in the corners to fit the top floor onto. And did you use the bottom of the crate for the roof and just put a sheet on top, or did you replace it?

I barely finish the trimwork in my real house  lol
The crates stay together really well actually. The hinges on the sides formed notches that the top half fit right into. Yep I did use the bottom of the crate as the roof, but I took it off and flipped it over. It helped create the parapet lip around the roof edge.

Most excellent work on the Post Office there! 8)

I really like the carpet on the floor, very convincing indeed. Consider that idea firmly filed for future reference ;)

I added some streetlights to my town:

AND finished the large one story storage crate building.

I decided on a less "silly" name for this business, thanks to those who gave suggestions.

There is quite a bit more to see and a tiny how- to for the streetlights over at my blog.
Questions and comments wanted!

That's a really nice project. Not only well executed, but also really clever ideas and recycled materials.

I'm currently building my own modern/super heroes city, and I'm far from your results. And I didn't have 1/10 of the great ideas you had  :o

Title: The Gray Haven project (updated 01-19-2014) last of the buildings
Post by: Papa Spanky on January 19, 2014, 11:23:37 PM
More finished stuff and some WIP shots! These are the last of the buildings. Sorry the building shots are a little rough.

(http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v654/spankyhojek/wargaming/handh1_zpsc8e6fa59.jpg~original) (http://smg.photobucket.com/user/spankyhojek/media/wargaming/handh1_zpsc8e6fa59.jpg.html)
These are the Hardware/ Sporting Goods and  the year round Halloween costume shop. The Hardware store is an Ameritown police building and the Halloween shop is a Plasticville firehouse.

The front of the Halloween shop, showing off the riot cop and zombie costumes and the giant spider decoration. (or is it just a decoration? muhaha...)

This is the Village Hall, made from a Plasticville train station.

Heres a whole bunch of fiddly detail bits; from overstuffed chairs to straw bales for outdoor fall decor.

Lastly here a WIP of some traffic signs and and some traffic signals I cast up. (the lights are 5mm half round jewels)
Theres a little more at my blog if your interested.
Thanks for looking, questions answered and comments appreciated!

WOW! This is some really outstanding work! One of the best projects I have ever seen as far as recycled stuff.  You have a good eye for stuff.
