Title: Gladiator Rules?
Post by: Prof.Witchheimer on February 14, 2012, 12:25:10 AM
There are many out there. Warhammer Historical, "Red Sand, Blue Sky", MTS and so on. I guess I would buy the Warhammer Historical "Gladiator" just for the pics but I've heard "Red Sand, Blue Sky" would provide better rules.

Any experiences, suggestions?

The free set, Munera Sine Missione, worked for my club.

If you like Warhammer historical rules system (like LOTOW, LOTHS,...) Gladiator is a must have. Nice book.

Anatoli wrote a review of the game :

You can also play free rules :

And Mordheim Pit Fighter, available for free from GW site normally.

RSBS is a fun set of rules. If you start running a ludus,  and play out the rise and fall of your house, it can be a good time! Still not much fun to play out individual battles, as you are really just setting the gladiators down, and moving a few squares.
Gladiator games are one of the few instances I would prefer a good video game to a miniatures game.

I bought the Gladiator book for the pictures and Red Sand Blue Sky for the rules (it also includes chariot racing).
I may write my own rules if I don't like them but, so far, they seem fine and I like the area movement idea so I'd keep that whatever I choose to do later.

I used to enjoy the Avalon Hill Gladiator game - see http://boardgamegeek.com/boardgame/1693/gladiator, despite being a board game it was ideal for minis indeed it included cardboard counters that were about 28mm.

Currently I am just thinking of some small fights with a few figures at my next wargaming weekend. Just for fun, so the rules should be quick/easy to learn.

Later, after finishing of my Ancient German project, I could imagine to make a bit more and more complex but you know the long-time-inspiration of a wargamer can be very fickle.

And how said, I will get the Warhammer Historical book either way but I'm not sure if that set is the right thing for a relaxed game with some friends drinking beer and being too lazy for long rounds :)

If you get the Warhammer Historical rules you might be interested in some enhancements/house rules I wrote to make the game a little better (imo).

I want to introduce my 10yo nephew to gaming and have been thinking about using the 1/32 scale ITALERI and Pegasus sets for such a project. Free rules would be lovely.

Thanks, Anatoli, will check out them as soon as I get the rules.

Idea of using of larger scales was going through my mind as well. Eventually I’ve decided to go for 28mm just to be able to use the minis in other Ancient settings, probably as bodyguards in my Roman Merchant caravan for the Germania project.

About the GW set of rules, there is a problem about the initiative system, that could not work with a dual fight system like one need for the gladiators way of fighting.
In the past, i had made a rules for the french magazine Vae Victis where the dual fight was at his best. At this i worked on RUDIS, the old tabletop rules, and did a more light version, less complex and more easy to learn......for the magazine's readers.

It is Welf. This games is based on the old game from specialist games in their mordheim-section. I think four years ago at the Tactica he showed it. You play with moving card for all the possible gladiators. Played on a hex-arena.
The rules called "pit fighter" and you can find it here: http://www.google.de/url?sa=t&rct=j&q=pit%20fighter%20mordheim&source=web&cd=5&ved=0CE0QFjAE&url=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.games-workshop.com%2FMEDIA_CustomProductCatalog%2Fm1340002_Pit_Fighter.pdf&ei=EsI7T-3_E43YsgauqKHcBg&usg=AFQjCNE5YSJ3dpc9fsrz5SLhCRMgxtpANg&cad=rja

The rules for Red Sand, Blue Sky seem interesting, although I haven't played them yet.

I went through a gladiator period some years ago and the best rules I've played were Habet, Hoc Habet by Flagship Games (now Scale Creep).  The rules were fun to play and had an excellent campaign system where the players were Lanista buying slaves (there were various qualities of slave you could buy, although you never truely knew what you were getting until you actually bought them), running single matches, multi-gladiator fights, beast fights, chariot races... it was all there.  Gladiators would suffer wounds (different hit locations determined where and how they affected performance) or get better at fighting, you'd make money on fights and could wager with other players on the outcome.  A great club game system to get into.

Seems there are dozens of Gladiator games out there. I think, I'll create a new thread/sticky for them.

RSBS is unbeatable for solo playing and now the second edition has improved the tactics of gladiators as well as streamlined the 1st ed. ruleset. I recommend it.
Here you can see a full campaign I played using RSBS 1 ed.

Don't worry, that can not be Spartacus.
Spartacus was fighting as an Murmillo, not an Dimachaerus ;)

Arena Games is what we play...

http://www.wargamevault.com/product_info.php?manufacturers_id=3222&products_id=80461

It is fast and easy and incredibly fun. Especially on beer-sodden Saturday nights at gaming conventions when everything else is winding down.

It is Welf.

I did not run the game on my own, I had two magnificent partners, Alex and Joachim, who both invested at least as much work and time in the project as I did. Let's not forget them!

Ruleswise it is true we used Pit Fighter with a few house rules. To start, we replaced the Undead with the Dimachaerus, the Chaos Warrior with the Secutor, the Orc with the Mirmillo, the Witch Elf with the Velite and the Skink with the Retiarius. We dropped the Empire Man.
But we had let's of other minor rule changes over the years. Anybody interested, PM me, but don't expect an answer before the Tactica is over. There is still plenty of work to be done.

I played a lot of RUDIS about 25 years ago and thought the rules were good.  I'd be interested to see a cut down version though - they were a little too complex for a family game.

These rules (scroll down the page) http://www.sbarber-models.clara.net/main.html are decent enough rules, had some good fun with them.
