I am shedding some of my armies and painted figures because I want to concntrate on projects, then I spied the Quar on sale fomr Zombiesmith and couldnt resist, especially with a sale on :o
I know my Murray does a lot of fluff for them but was wondering if any members have some that they have painted, especially as they have an "almost human" war weary look to them drying out for their own Great War :D
I quite fancy doing mine as Colonial Troops to face off against hordes of Kroot in an afghanistan type game :)
-
Here's a gallery of 72 photos by TankGuy (http://www.flickr.com/photos/69768863@N00/sets/72157601581300929/) who is a pretty active participant over at the ZS forum. Note his transport is a scratchbuild and not some secret Quar kit.
You might also be interested to know that Josh does all his own casting. He built his vulcanizer and spincaster, which is pretty dang impressive for a one-man operation. The castings are in good shape for being done by a self-taught caster.
I've got some that I was planning to use as British Colonial troops for T&T, so clearly great minds are thinking alike here. :D
Edit for bad BBCode
-
Excuse my ignorance, but what ar Quars? They look like antropomorphic space tortoise to me but I bet there's more to them than that.
-
Hehee Pete indeed we do :D
Hammershield, they are a new or relatively new alien race thought up by Josh (I think) Pete is adding fluff to their background all the time which is damned impressive wrting, a real talent for story telling there. They are a sort of anteater type creature.
Zombiesmith has done well they look the dogs danglies
I watched the concept drawings on his site for a couple of years until they became reality. Resisted them until now, there is something about them makes you want to have them on your table.

WW1 style aliens, imho the best "scifi" race in a long long time :)
here's some background http://www.zombiesmith.com/pages/quar/

Excuse my ignorance, but what ar Quars? They look like antropomorphic space tortoise to me but I bet there's more to them than that.
Quar are synapsids, evolved from an insectivorous ancestor. Politically they incline towards national confederations of largely-autonomous city-states. Their culture places heavy emphasis on clan identity, which has driven most of their political and social history. For the last 700 years they have been fighting what has become known as the Long War. Up until recently, this was essentially a series of alliances made and broken, and politics-by-other-means between the ruling First Families.
But Alykinder's Crusade has remade the face of the Quar politics, and for the first time in the Long War it seems there may be one faction that rules all Quar. Yet even as he extends his reach, Alykinder's ability to control is weakened.
And I promise you very soon there will be more world detail available on the Zombiesmith site. I don't want to steal Josh's thunder.
Edit: Yes, I'm writing quite a bit on them. Josh essentially said: Here are some images and ideas, can you do something with them? It was like being a kid in the candy shop, or getting to paint the studio models. I'm very grateful to him.
The best part is I can bounce between this and the Rattrap stuff to keep my creative mojo up!
-
I bought all the Quar, about £75.00 worth, but recently gave them away to a friend because I couldn't face assembling them :(
He's having fun painting them though so that's alright.
-
recently gave them away to a friend .
Is there an official form to join "Friends of Matakishi" or do we just form an orderly queue now ?
-
I have only started 1 but I have them all and the are just great figures. I love the pik pik messengers. I really need to paint them up. I had started with the typical green uniforms but I am in search of somthing different. if anyone has a cool unifor idea I am open to suggestions
-
They're great and amongst the top 3 of my 'armies not to buy because I don't need more miniatures' list. It'll be hard to resist, though I know I would hardly use them on any tabletop.
And I sevond Col. Stone:

Arise long past thread, arise from your slumber and walk again….
The Quar look to be coming in 2023… in plastic!
https://wargamesatlantic.com/blogs/news/wargames-atlantic-and-zombiesmith-hard-plastic-quar
-
Wow, plastic Quar! I did not see that coming! :o
I hope they do really well. :)
-
I always liked the figures (not so keen on the tanks), but never found an excuse to buy any.
Hard plastic may well be that excuse :D
-
Oh wow! I agree, they’re a cool concept and I hope they do well in plastic!
-
Very excited about plastic Quar. I have the Miyazaki Akuyaku tank kit unbuilt. I keep thinking about doing it up for my Imperial Guard, but I think Quar might be a much better match.
-
The Quar are back? Cool, missed out them the first time around.
-
I have the Miyazaki Akuyaku tank kit unbuilt.
Ah yes, I think that was the "close inspiration" for the Warzone Bauhaus Grizzly tank wasn't it? :)
-
I have a long stalled Quar project so this is great news, can't wait for this to come to fruition. :)
-
Ah yes, I think that was the "close inspiration" for the Warzone Bauhaus Grizzly tank wasn't it? :)
If by close inspiration, you mean Warzone ripped it off wholesale, yes. :D
I had no idea of the connection when I first saw the warzone tank. A FLGS had one of the resin models back in the 90s when I first got into wargaming. Wanted it so bad, but it was far outside my price range. Luckily over a decade later the Akuyaku kit was rereleased and IIRC it was fairly affordable for a while.
-
The Quar is one of those ranges I've been aware of for a while but I've never picked any up...seeing them in hard plastic could well change that. A boxed game sounds cool and I like the look of the sprues, 3 minis for each side on each sprue with a range of option, nice!
-
I dont know how wargame atlantic is run these days, they seem all over the place at times but boy if it is giving us things like plastic quar? I can only applaud it. I will say that for me, the quar are best in small scales, their heads are quite featureless so that translates well and the extra cuteness factor is just great for them... I should get some in 6mm sometime.
-
Excellent news, always loved the look but never bought them before. But with these plastic miniatures I will certainly pick some up.
-
I see plastic Croftyans in my future.
-
I had quite a few 25mm Quar awhile ago, but gave up as they were just too fiddly to assemble. Does anyone know if the 15mm Quar are one piece castings?
-
Interested, especially how much they'll cost in the UK.
-
I wonder how many sprues there will be the boxed game...there are 3 troopers for each faction on a sprue so maybe 5 sprues for a small skirmish game or 10 sprues for 30 per side?
I guess it depends on the scale of warfare for the game and if there will be any other sprues / unit types.

I believe this quote is from the Zombiesmith Facebook page….
“Hey all! So hopefully by now, you’ve seen the news that we have partnered with Wargames Atlantic to bring hard plastic Quar in 2023!
The first hard plastic release will be a box set that will include a squad of Coftyrans and a squad of Crusaders (plus a couple of extra models), skirmish rules to use them with and some other bits and bobs for play. This will be a new version of Rhyfler’s Pocketbook that has been updated with a new shooting mechanic that makes a gun game more dynamic by rewarding movement and positioning so not everyone turtles up. (Ooo… I need to design the Quar equivalent of a shelled amphibian…)
Wargames Atlantic will be selling models/sprue/frames separate from the main box set if all goes to plan as well. Hudson and I have also discussed future hard plastic sets, so if these do well they will be followed with more.
Along with the releasing of hard plastics from Wargames Atlantic, I’ll be releasing new Crusaders and Coftyrans to go with them. The first month will be is-Caertens and Caertens (Officers) followed by light machine gunners and sharpshooters in the following months. And yes, the tractors are back in 28mm too. I’ll sprinkle in some arm sets and other bits to customize the plastic kits as well. I have 5-6 months of 28mm releases ready and Anthony is busily painting them for the site as I type. The first of these will drop alongside the plastics. Date TBD!
The infantry models released by Zombiesmith will be combinations of metal, siocast hard resin and some printed parts here and there. The tractors will be high-quality resin 3d prints (not FDM) and they look great. I’ll share some pics in the coming weeks. Although if you are in the Quar Facebook group and scroll down you’ll see some pictures of them back when I was prototyping them in 28mm.
These new Quar are around the same height as the first generation of Quar. The new ones are a little thicker than the old as I’ve gone a little more whimsical with them. The metal ones aren’t going away and some of the new stuff I’m working on will work with both generations of Quar. I’ll most likely need to boost the cost of the metal ones in the coming months, as you all know metal went nuts for a while and is back down, some, but I’m not relying on that to continue.”
-
...& the cost will be????????
Is there an official form to join "Friends of Matakishi" or do we just form an orderly queue now ?
I'll join that queue. :D
-
Thanks Grumpy Gnome! Sounds good and some conversion kits for the plastics makes a lot of sense.

Looking on the Zombiesmith website at the current skirmish starters there are 6 minis per starter so I assume we'll get 2 sprues of minis then. The extra models could be some sort of objective or civilians maybe? Sounds like it could be a tidy little set. No idea what the current rules are like but that's an easy fix if not to my fancy. As some have said it could be a good set for using with the kids yet with plenty of scope for expansion.
-
Always loved them and have a bunch, they seemed to have died off but in reality they were always there. In the early days what I could not get I made my self the plastics might be good for that http://bandit86.blogspot.com/search/label/Quar
They were fun to build and (they had a great song competition I did not win :( but my song was printed as the centerfold of one of the books, and I even have a Quar named after me. The Quar have always been a passion of mine I just love the little guys.
-
More from the Zombiesmith FB page:
...there will be 12 Crusaders and 12 Coftyrans in the game box. Enough for a squad of each and some extras. Wargames Atlantic will also release models on their own separate from the main box.
We are still discussing what the next hard plastics sets will be. But what WA doesn’t produce I will like officers and other special characters.
So with 3 bodies per sprue thats 4 sprues, not a bad size for a game as my painting time is sadly lacking. Also, if the 12 minis is enough for a squad and some spare then presumably that should leave us a body or two spare for whatever metal upgrade kits are released.
-

Hard plastic may well be that excuse :D
This!
Oh bother... ::)
-
Well they look cute.
Slightly confusing sprue picture, until you realise they are two half sprues per mould - a half sprue of Crusaders and a half sprue of Coftyrans.
On my list for next year.

You make brilliant Quar stuff mate, I especially your sailors. All your Quar stuff is clever and cute. You really bring them to life. I like your passion for the project, it is inspirational.
The Quar fluff is as interesting as the Quar themselves are cute. It is becoming impossible for me to resist.
Any one know if there is chance of Zombiesmith doing a sale on their 28mm metal sculpts for Black Friday?

The 15mm Quar are one piece.

I've got quite a few of the early metals. Maybe two factions. Never got to assemble and paint them.
Absolutely love the Vaughn Bodé 'Cobalt 60' vibe.
-
WGA has a new Quar section on their forum. A great spot to discuss Quar with Joshua, the Quar creator, for those not on Facebook.

I've been painting a few over the last few weeks.
Some of what I have done so far.

I probably have around 50 finished plus one tank.

Great work Rabbitz, loving it! 👍
-
Nice work. I like the headless mount...weird but cool.
-
Nice painting.
Thanks @Grumpy Gnome for pointing out the WA forum.
-
Loved the Quar when they first came out but the frankly daft horse analogues put me right off and ended up flogging all of mine.

Quite like the animal design, have been thinking of using the Wargames Atlantic horses with new heads to match the official miniatures, should be not that difficult I think.
-
The main question I have about the riding beasts is how they eat? Drop down on their knees to graze (moose do that when they aren’t browsing twigs from bushes), rely on taller plants (which moose usually do), have really long prehensile tongues (giraffe tongues are pretty crazy and some other critters have super long tongues) or some other adaptation?
In that regard, I don’t find them much more objectionable than some other fantasy beasts, which often have tusks or horns that would make eating really difficult (the animals GW’s ogres ride are examples).
In any case, I am looking forward to seeing the plastic quar once they are released, they have always been fun sculpts.
-
They are neck-less not headless! Well, they have necks, just short. Their heads have a dentine "cap" that evolved over time from their horns as they were constantly headbutting each other and things. They eat low leaves or kneel on their front legs to eat low leaves and grass. ;D

I was not sure about the mounts but they have grown on me. They look like they would fit right into the Kenshi universe.
-
I bet they'd feel odd to ride with nothing in front of you to stop you from tumbling off if they rammed anything.
Very distinctive though. I like them and it'd be cool to see some in plastic.
-
The mounts were what made me buy Quar! Loved the beasties, they would fit right in Star Wars.
-
I don't know what it is, but they really creep me out o_o. Maybe it's a bit too close to a insect for my liking, I'm not really sure.
Doesn't mean I would buy and paint them when/if they appear in plastic, but definitely creepy
-
Was there ever a EU/UK distributor for the Quar?
-
Any Zombiesmith stuff I bought, I had to buy from them direct.
That was a good few years ago, though, so it might have changed at some point.
There are still things I'd like to get from them, but postage, VAT and exchange rate these days stop me before I do anything :(
-
I have been looking for am EU source for Quar without success so far. I dread buying direct with all the added expenses but I may not get a choice… so hopefully Zombiesmith will have a Black Friday sale this month so I can get started on this new project.
Once the plastic sets are done I suppose we will be able to get Quar as easily as any other WGA sets.
-
Great work Rabbitz, you have done a super job on those lovely figures. I love the cadier figures they are superb, I have some Gwynt lancers and their cadiers to paint, the whole vibe about them is great. :)
-
Found this playthrough video of A Rhyfler's Pocketbook at some event...the audio is a bit naff but its interesting to watch. Hopefully, we'll see some better videos nearer release, a GMG one would be cool.

I'll spin up a Black Friday sale! I usually run one Friday to Monday.
And yes there will be new properly recorded gameplay videos when the plastics land!

Damn. Lol. I literally just placed an order for Tales of the Breach and some extra models. Should have held off the buy button a little bit. oh well not to worry.
Really looking forward to some vids,

I'll take care of you. Don't worry.

What size board does the game use, anyone know? I've had a look in the Rhyfler's Pocket Book but can't seem to find it.
-
Apparently the board size is 2x2ft for small games and 4x4ft for larger games.
I also had a look through the booklets to work out what weapons you get on the sprue...
Coftyrans get 5 Harlech (the long thin rifles), a Cryfen LMG and 2 Doru SMGs.
Crusaders get 4 Bogen (Assault Rifles) and 3 Ryshi (Heavy Rifle).
For the Coftyrans this allows you to build a Yawdryl (leader), Trench Raiders (potentially), Sharpshooter and Rhyflers (basic troops).
While for the Crusaders this allows you to build a Yawdryl (leader), Rhyflers (basic troops) and LMG Rhyfler.
For both factions there are only a couple of options from the Rhyfler's Pocketbook that you can't build...as far as I can see. Looks like a fairly solid set of options.
-
Thanks for the research info Lost Egg. 👍
-
I am very keen to get started on my Quar project so will not be waiting for the plastics. If anyone has any 28mm Quar they are looking to part with I have cash as well as a large selection of things to offer in trade.
-
To help facilitate future Quar discussions on Lead Adventure I have created a new thread in the “Other” category as it seemed the most appropriate. If the mods think it should be in sci-fi would it be possible to move it there?
https://leadadventureforum.com/index.php?topic=139146.0
I have also created a post with several useful Quar information links over in the Wargames Atlantic forum.

I finally got around to basing my models and adding some terrain
