This is Saladin's(Salah ad-Din) Ayyubid dynasty army for Impetus. I'm really enjoying working with the colours and the miniatures are an absolute joy to paint from Legio Historica which I think are some of the best 15mm miniatures on the market.
The unit depicted here are Arab Lancers that can serve as Berbers, Kurds and Syrians equally.
Thanks for viewing :)

Here are some Sudanese archers. For these I used a watered down Devlan Mud wash that I applied carefully in shadows and then a highlight. It's really helped speed the painting while maintaining a standard I'm happy with. I'll need to redo the lancers a bit to bring the army into the same look, but that will be quick.

Continuing on with my 15mm Ayyubid Muslim army for the Crusades in the form of Turcoman Horse Archers which are a main stay of the army of the period. Their lightning swift hit and run tactics were a constant thorn in the side of Crusaders until they got their own to counter it!

:-* Very nice...the colours are stunning

I can't paint 28mm as good as you do 15mm! Lovely shading.

Mamluks are the elite of my 15mm Ayyubid army for Impetus. They began as slave soldiers before eventually taking Nobles into their ranks were some even became Sultan! They were not just deadly archers, but were equally hard in close quarter fighting and in a large part defeated both the Crusaders and Mongols to give some perspective of their qualities for those perhaps not familiar with them.

Cracking work Chris :-*

Next unit hot off the brush are Fanatic Warriors. In painting these warriors I decided to go with a serious and slightly sinister looking discipled formation of warriors dedicated to crushing the infidels who invaded their holy land. They look much harder then their profile really is in the list, but hopefully they will intimate my opponent enough! :P
As always thanks for viewing! :)

Nice, is this a move into 15mm and away from 28mm?

Thanks and not exactly. I've done 15mm as my alternative scale to 28mm for many years, but I will be doing more armies in this scale in the future as it's easier to complete then 28mm. Basically, I'll use 28mm for skirmish more and more and in regards to armies I'll be much more selective.
I have both 15mm and 28mm armies in the pipeline so expect to see both. :)

Makes perfect sense to me Christopher, infact having got rid of all mine I think if I were to ever dip my toe again I would go for 15mm as quicker and cheaper these days and would satisfy the itch that is wargaming :D
-
The spear armed units could also double up as Almoravid Black Guard spearmen if you wanted to expand into El Andalus.
-
Yes indeed the Moors Black Guard were an inspiration for this unit 8)......but, too bad these guys are not anywhere near as tough as them though! :(

A long return back to my Ayyubid army in the form of Ghulam lancers. The figures are still of course from the lovely Legio Heroica range and the banner is from the superb LBM. All shields were painted by myself.
Thanks for looking! :)

Absolutely stunning brushwork. I am painting 28mm (well old minifigs) arabic stuff up for saga atm and am blown away by how stunning yours look, especially for 15mm.
Does inspire me though as I will be working a 15mm DBMM Spanish force at some point in the future and if I can get them to look half as good I will be a happy man.
Looking forward to seeing more.
-
Axebreaker... Damn you... You but all our 28mm armies to shame with those 15mm miniatures... >:(
But on a more serius note, I actually use your pictures as inspiration for my army. :)
-
Excellent Christopher.
Love them all, but the fanatic warriors are my favourite... 'Turn out the Black Guard!'
:)
-
Thank you guys I appreciate your kind words of support. :)
@Captain Blood
Eventually the fanatic warriors will be the Fatamid guard when I expand the army.
