A friend and I are looking at doing some Samurai gaming, we are particularly interested in doing a small skirmish set based on the "47 Ronin". I have looked at Perry, Dixon etc. but no figures specifically for this period, does anyone know of any figures specific for this era, or are Perry/Dixons suitable, anything to watch out for, re anachronistic details.
-
Tamiya do them but they are in 1/35 Some of the Perry's would work but you would need to do a bit of greenstuffing :?
cheers

Any images that would help with searches? are they armoured or unarmoured etc
-
The 47ronin were pretty much unarmoured. I'll dig out what photos I've got and post them up later :)

Ahh, then that is the way I have been going through my figures, so far I have collected;
Perry ronin street clothes
Black hat Ronin
Museum miniatures retainers
Dixon ROnin (see my post for the copplestone sculpts)
There are some in other ranges that cna fit in too, such as clan wars EM4 etcg

Just bought book on kindle for inspiration :D

Which one?
Here are the pictures of the Tamiya '47ronin' figures. They are multipart and the detailing isn't bad. I got them 6 years ago and they are still in the wrappers lol
The smaller box has four figures in it and the larger one has eight. Plenty of extras and quite a bit of scope for conversion. Now I've had another look at them it might make quite a nice project to do Edo period police games :D
Of course, that means making everything again in a different scale... But what the f**k ;D

I used to have the Tamiya figures when first released (must be at least 30 years ago), as a teenager I was always fascinated by the Samurai and Japan (I remember writing a huge project for school). In the past I have painted a few 28mm figures but never collected a gaming force. I think I have been intimidated by all the stitching on the armor, now that my eyesight is fading I decide to have a go ;D. I have to say Jim that you are partly to blame as for the last two years I have spent alot of my time at SALUTE drooling over your gaming table!
Yesterday I was out bid on the 8 figure set, but today got the 4 figure set for £5.00 :D, they appear quite regularly on ebay.
I am currently reading the Osprey Raid book by Stephen Turnbull, which although apparently very accurate does rather take away some of the romance from the saga.
I still plan to do a small skirmish game in 28mm, looks like I will using the "not Copplestone" Dixon figures along with Perry miniatures and Green stuff. I am really surprised no one has done figures for this in 28mm, I may even consider having a few sculpted money permitting.
-
There is also an Osprey on the 47 Ronin :D
That headgear looks very Korean or Mongol in style

Not to sure about the sculpting, but I think these may be the way to go.

They arent bad to be honest a couple of awkward poses but I liked the ashigaru standing and bowing for guards in ninja scenarios :D
-
Could you post some size comparison shots of the Musketeer figs Karl? I like some of the poses.

Ah Paul I only have the retainers with spear didnt get the musket men as I wanted guards as targets for my ninja :P
I only got 1,2,3 and 12 as last mionth they had 25% off so would ahve been rude not to :D

Sorry, I meant the Museum figures, I was looking at another site at the time :( (silly me)
I have a Japanese film of the 47 Ronin which is pretty good and I just bought the cheap kindle book you mentioned. The LPL has accelerated my Japanese fantasy project so I may as well grab some stuff while the mood takes me.
Just got 21 Dixon goblins in the post today as well :)

You can put me down for a pre-order. :D

IIRC the loyal retainers wore firemans uniforms as a disguise, hence the funny headgear.

On a different but slightly related subject, does anyone know of a decent non fantasy fighting Samurai Woman/Giesha figures. I just need one.
-
I think West Wind do one. Dressed in a kimono and drawing a katana (the kimono and her hair aren't 100% historical but it will do :) ).
cheers

Em4 has a nice fighting woman too.

I have the two Dixon ones and Hasslefree do one (or more) as well.
-
For the female, GCT is going to be releasing a VERY nice female Samurai for their Bushido line soon. Here's the preview (http://www.bushido-thegame.com/content/welcome-2012)
-
My favourtite is Shiba Tsukune (clan wars) but I don't think she's been re-released by Valiant enterprises yet.

For technical reasons (gateway block) I can't see or post any images so please indulge me.
As I understand it, the acceptable primary weapon for a female was the naginata (images of the Christian revolt have a number of women so armed). The short sword (wakazashi) was also available to ruling class women (Kurosawa's lady Mcbeth in Throne of Blood fits the bill) but it was uncommon.
A naginata-wielding female 'samurai' would be an amazing sculpt.
I have two film versions of 47 Ronin. Both are really interesting but can be hard going.

Fortunately for you, Bushido already have a naginata-wielding woman (Jin, from their "Prefecture of Ryu" faction):
The spear blade isn't quite curved like a true naginata, but that's an incredibly simple conversion.
-
Ooooh. That's a very tempting thing. It looks like a cut down yari.
I agree the curve would be relatively simple although the blade would be a bit short.
A naginata is really a wakazashi on a stick, I suppose.
Why black? I'd put her in blazing eye-watering pearlescent white. Culturally, a very dangerous colour for a dangerous gal.
-
I think black armour and blue clothes are that faction's normal colours.
-
I have the two Dixon ones
I don't suppose that you have a photo of those, or know of one, please? The Dixon web-site doesn't illustrate them.
-
Well, that is on my to do list for this year ;)

Sorry to resurrect this thread, but with the forthcoming "Ronin" rules from Osprey my interest in gaming the 47 ronin has been re-invigorated.
So question is Jim is this still on your to do list? As If not I may look at getting a few sculpted.

Hey all,
just a heads up if anyone fancies more 1/35 scale figures! ;D
Aoshima do quite a large range of figures as plastic kits, although I think like the Tamiya 47 ronin a lot of them are discontinued.
Their are also some nice Kurosawa figures from Yojimbo, made by Kaiyodo but I think they're more 40mm?
Cheers
