That HAS it's uses, however.... convert it to steam and call it a troop transport, for example; or a vessel built to transport obelisks from Egypt to France or Britain; or....

Double ones! That means Noah falls down dead drunk and accidentally flashes his winkie!

Now roll 10D100 to see how long Noah lives.

"Greatest seafaring story of all time?" Hardly. Nowhere near as good as the Bismarck chase. There aren't even any explosions.

you could put satan on a Swordfish firing torpedos at the Ark! but a swordfish attacking the Ark (Royal) doesn't sound too good!  :?

so give him an U-Boat!  :D and give Moses some depth carges!

Oh dear...

This reminds me of my evangelical christian collegue in the US who was certain there were archeological remains of the Arch of Noah on top of Mnt Ararat. I asked him what his evangelical archeologists friends had thought of sifting through that thick layer of sediment which comes from having a pair of all species there ever was onboard, shitting to their hearts' delight.

...and I guess this post is my ticket to hell. :-)

You got away easily.  :? There's a church in West Virginia that has, for thirty years now, been trying to "prove" the existence of a Noah's Ark by building one. Its skeletal hulk is visible as you drive out West on I-70.

I could see this being an excellent centerpiece to a pre-WW2 game, with archeologists, Kabbalists, and Gebirgsjaegers all fighting to get inside and investigate its secrets...

And I was trying to remember where the Ark appears in 20,000 Leagues Under The Sea.  :)

It's a nice looking hull though.

When you're making small talk with them, most of them are polite and friendly. Despite their bizarre and medieval positions, they usually have no experience with the kinds of things they rail against. They're systematically fleeced by their political and religious leaders into backing positions that are in their own worst interest. They live in areas where opportunities for work and education are limited. Religion is a comforting system that gives their lives some structure. They're just people in the end.

The really malignant extremists are a smaller minority than you'd think.

Oooh! Another example of you genius with narration. I might end up buying this kit after all, trademark rain bow on the box art or not.

Has anyone ever tried to figure out how big the ark would have to be to hold 2 of every species on the planet (excluding the ones  that already live in the water of course)?

Not entirely true. You have to consider, just to mention two, the fresh water sunfish and the Yangtsee dolphin (now sadly extinct since two years back).

On the other hand , when did logic ever matter when talking to a zealot?

Okay, just mammals there are approx. 4500 species. If you assume that about 1000 of them require an average space of about 10x10 and the remaining needing an average space about 3x3, you would need 131,500 sq. ft. If the ark were 300 ft long by 50 feet wide, there would been to be about 9 levels.

This does not take into account reptiles and birds either.

So an ark the size of an American Football field, at least 70 feet tall would be the smallest you could do.

Did they have deck chairs? I'm not going on any cruise that does not have deck chairs.

And a rock climbing wall.

And Skeet shooting (damn that Skeet Uhlrich!)

I want to know who drew the short stick and had to house all the poisonous reptiles, hostile insects and venomous aracnids.  I'm sorry, but the inside of the Ark would have been Hell on Earth.  Not to mention what are the chances of at least one of Noahs family having an alergy to at least ONE of the creatures onboard.  I grew up on a farm allergic to everything we raised and grew, that was misery I can tell you.

Also, please tell me that they had some simple efficient way to clean it out.

There were more than two of each animal according to the Bible. Sheep, goats etc. had seven of each. Pigs and other prohibited food animals were in pairs.

There, now you know more useless trivia than you did yesterday

So was the Ark also a time machine?

I thought that Moses wrote the Torah (with all its long lists of abominations, thou shalts and thou shalt nots).

Edit: That tradition doesn't make any sense, either. He wrote it, but he dies in it!  (at the end of Deuteronomy) :)  I guess he borrowed Noah's time machine in order to obtain the spoilers for the last bit.

Better yet, move all the animals to one end of the ship so as to submerge it. Repeat for the other end.

But here's a question - what did the carnivores feed on?

That was unusually wise and succinct for an internet post. PeteMurray, you are going to ruin the net's reputation as a soap box for hysterical screeching.  The Gibbon salutes you.
