Title: Pulp City Project (updated 16/10/15)
Post by: exploding youth on March 05, 2012, 07:12:15 AM
So today I started work on my Pulp City board. Well I have been dabbling with a few pieces here and there, hence the semi completed nature of some of the things on the board. The game is supposed to have a late 80s Miami vibe, which I haven't seen anyone try yet. I am going for a California/Miami thing, that's what's with all the palms. I am going to try my hand at some neon too, which should prove interesting or fruitless! All the buildings will have LED lighting. I bought a load of LED streetlights off ebay, but unfortunately the game play dictates that they be removable, so I have had to veto the idea of them lighting up too.

The curbs are 3mm foamed PVC which turned out to be perfect for this purpose. I still need to add the traffic island/planters for the Pegasus palms. The pegged bases are perfect for having them be removable, which helps in game and with storage.

Looks very good already!  :o
What are the dimensions of the board you are using, 48cmx48cm?

Very,. very cool looking. Can the foamed PVC be spray under-coated, or does it need to be primed by hand?

The board is looking great. :)

It is 120cm x 90cm, the blacked out parts are space so the cards and dice rolling don't clutter up the table (a pet hate of mine), so the playing surface ends up being 90x90 (close enough to 3x3 ft)

It can! In fact it needs to be I find, as it is pretty water resistant, and behaves more like a plastic than foamcore (which also means you really need to use superglue, I drained my supply of zap-a-gap on this board :o). Though the painted piece you see here was done by hand.

Cant wait to follow the progress of this baby.

You have given me an idea to do something similar for a Strange Aeons board.
Hmmmm.......... ::)

This is really inspirational! Thank you for sharing :)

By the way, I really look forward on your attempts to paint the Sarissa house. I've been holding back a buy since I assume that the non-existent texture might cause a problem.

Nice work! I think that setting the board on an angle (rather than just a plain square grid) gives it a lot more visual interest.

You can see two of them that I have already painted, they turned out pretty well. I'll get some more close up pics of them soon!

I share your pet hate and I like your solution!

Indeed, it makes it a lot more interesting.

Would very much like to see the finished project!

Lovely. I would add an Art Deco building in there. Miami's South Beach is famous for its deco buildings.

That's the plan for the Scratch build I am going to do, an Art Deco 80s nightclub

Like that idea too. Only thing about the black 'dice' areas, when you want to expand you'll be limited in direction, only a little point but worth considering.

Most impressive work!

I'm currently in the process of looking for materials and odds and ends for my own board. My plan is to make an LA-inspired board with some palm trees like yours and maybe even some tar pits to add something a bit different. So I just wanted to ask if you have found any good Australian suppliers for the bits and bobs you use.

Which stuff specifically were you after? Mostly I get stuff online, but some of it I got in stores

For Pulp City figs, try http://phoenix-forge.com/ (http://phoenix-forge.com/) or http://www.defiantgaming.com/shop/index.php (http://www.defiantgaming.com/shop/index.php) . The cars and the trees I got from Big W, Arthur Daley's discount shop and Victorian Hobby centre (all in Melbourne) Everything else I basically got from ebay or the manufactures own webstores.

This board is absolutely amazing!  A true inspiration, as well as the thread you linked to.  I'm just starting out with mine, three out od seven Sarissa buildings done and all of my streets and side walks printed.  I can't wait to get it done.  Once I have the bases done, I'll be shooting you lots of questions!  :)

I picked up this Cars 2 jet on sale today and plan on turning it into a X-Jet/Blackbird type vehicle for the Heavy Metal sub-faction. Unpainted Sgt Bale poses for scale.

I already removed the sticker with the eyes on it and might try to cut out the solid plastic behind the windshield. There is also a mouth under the nose that I need to file back and fill in. I probably won't get onto this until a later date, but I think it was a pretty cool find! It even has an interior!

What a very  nice looking board!

What is the size of the board? I have been trying to figure out the right size for my super figs board, I was thinking 4x4.

What figure is that huge giant yellow guy? Never seen him before and he looks great! He appears to be something you converted!

That is giant Hadron, for Pulp city

There is a 28mm and 15mm version too, as his power is to shrink and grow. Very cool.

Eip! Expensive! Almost as pricey as the Giant Man figure for clix! Gah!

A good solution for growing figures is to find a decent superhero action figure and the same character in Clix. I though about doing that with Hadron but decided finding a 15mm version would be difficult so went with the official dude

Oh and the board is roughly 3x3 with some wiggle room for cards and dice and other such clutter! Pulp plays well on 3x3. If I was building a generic supers board I probably would have gone for 4x4 as 3x3 can get a little restrictive once the roads are put in.

I set a new year painting challenge between myself and my friend Deansy From the Internet™. The deadline is the 20th of Jan, and intially I set my goal at five figures I had sitting around for ages. I got them done so extended it by another three figs to finish off all my Heavy Metal team. I have two left and 10 more days!  :o

Finished the last of my Heavy Metal supremes. both are proxies, Androida because my original one broke off at the ankles and Cyburn because I was not a fan of the half dressed official version.

If you have a pin drill you can fix that figure that broke. I do that often when something snaps.

Great terrain and figures. I love how they look like they might all be considering stealing the bike! "Look a bicycle. It is unchained. We should steal it."

I'll just chuckle away to myself then. I'm just assuming they are evil, I may be being unfair because of the whole bike theft thing.

Never the less, you have some great stuff going on there.

Haha, now I want to see someone do a custom conversion of that figure sitting on a stolen-and-too-small bicycle, aiming his weapon over the handlebars with one hand and trying not to tip over!

It is! Mostly I just airbrushed then some dry brushing to bring out the details. Various inks and pigments were then used to do the weathering streaks, dirt build up etc. I would defiantly recommend using an airbrush if you have access to one, it really speeds things up. The graffiti tagging is done using fine tipped paint pens. I actually painted most of this in a harried four days leading up to a con  :o I would like to go back and add some more detailing to some of them at some stage.

I ordered some of the Knights of Dice stuff which was supposed to ship this week. They had a snafu with the shipper cause a delay, but hopefully they'll be shipping soon. After seeing how good some of it can look I'm excited to get some of it onto my tabletop.
