Title: Dust Tactics: My Armies
Post by: KeyanSark on March 14, 2012, 10:29:44 AM
 Hi all:

I have started painting my Core Set miniatures and I will updating this topic as I finish new units.

I've started with the Death Dealers, as I have a very clear color scheme in my mind. In addition, I see them as the "allied tactical squad", so I wanted to have them ready first.

Here is a family picture:

I wanted them to look like real WW2 ranges (more or less) so I have used Vallejo Desert Yellow for the jackets, with a Leather Brown wash and then highlights in Desert Yellow and Desert Yellow + white. This can be better seen here:

Backpacks are painted in khaki, with a Vallejo Burnt Umber wash. Trousers are painted in Beast Brown with a Brown Ink wash, and boots and gloves are in Dark Flesh with a Devlan Mud wash, and then a Brown Ink wash.

Body armor is painted in the iconic Olive Drab, highlighted with Vallejo Russian Uniform, a wash of Black Ink and then another wash of Devlan Mud.

Bases and weapons are Boltgun Metal over a Black base, then washed with a 1:1 mix of Brown and Black inks. A little highlighting with Boltgun Metal, and then I added rubble and details on the bases painted in German Grey, and Neutral Grey, with some Orange added to resemble brick dust.

In some faces I did a little wash with German Grey to simulate unshaved beards and add some character.

Finally, I painted the bazooka in Olive Drab and did two washes. First: black, followed by some lights with Russian Uniform. Then, a Devlan Mud wash. I finished adding some chipping with German Grey.

Hope you like it!

Very nice! I really like the colors of these guys, especially the brown of the coats. Also great looking bases.

Well done! The metallics on the rifles seem a little too shiny to me, but thats probably because I'm used to seeing the grayish-green parkerized finish on real US firearms of the era.

Ya know, with a slightly different paint job the US troops could almost be the Browncoats from Firefly!

Hi again:

During the week I have painted a unit of Sturmpionieren, armed with Stg 47s, three panzerfausts and a flammenwerfer. I have used a "summer camo" scheme for the uniforms, with Grey for the armour parts.

The uniform is painted in German Uniform from Vallejo Model, washed with German Grey. Camo is Beasty Brown with additional dots in German Uniform.

Armour parts are painted in German Grey highlighted in Neutral Grey. I added carefully some Dark Flesh very thinned in the recessed parts so simulate dirt.

This can be better seen here. Gasmasks are painted in Leather Brown with a Brown Ink wask. The glass is painted with Sick Green and Camo Green.

Panzerfausts are painted in Dark Sand from Vallejo Model, with some Burnt Umber for the details.

Finally, some detail on the flammenwerfer

And the fuel canister

Excellent paintjob, and the orange brick dust on the bases is an interesting idea that catches the eye.

Thx a lot, guys! Now it is the turno for Sgt. "Rhino", the Allied Hero from the Core Set

Main colour is Olive Drab, with some highlights and a couple of washes in black and devlan mud inks. Some chipping was done at the end.

Thx again...

Now I've finished the leader of the Axis force in the Core Set: Feldwebel Lara Walter

For the armour I have used Vallejo German Uniform, with a wash of German Grey. I built up the Green again, and did some highlights using German Uniform + White, to finish with a wash of Devlan Mud.

To provide contrast, I painted the inner clothes in German Grey with a wash of Black, and the cabling in Red.

I applied then some chipping using German Grey and Boltgun Metal

Detail on the face...

And the hair, painted in Vomit Brown, washed with Leather Brown, and drybrushed in Bleached Bone.

Three more heavy armored Axis troopers: the Heavy Laser Grenadiers. I've painted them in plain black with death masks using greys.

I have finished now the Allied Heavy unit: the Hammers

I have used Vallejo Soviet Uniform as base color, providing a lighter green tone that contrast very well with the darker armour of Sgt. "Rhino"

For chipping I used German Grey and Metallic Grey

And the headgear has a simple Devlan Mud wash over a base of Vallejo "Earth"

And now is time for walkers. My first one is the Blackhawk from the revised core set, with some old Tamiya bits in the base. I have used Olive Green and Soviet Uniform for the chassis, with a wash of Devlan Mud all over the walker.

This not the core set anymore, but I´ll reuse the topic modifying the title. I have started painting a SSU army with the basic infantry unit, the Frontoviki. Here they are:

I have used Vallejo Soviet Uniformed washed with Ogryn Flesh for the clothes, and Gunship Green and Olive Green washed with German Grey for the helmets/armour... An assortments of browns and khakis with washes were used for the bags and complements.

They do not have the Sniper ability. Basically they wear penetrator, long-range rifles. The SSU sniper is a different unit with the same rifles but the Sniper and Agile abilities.

I order the Premium version of Sigrid von Thaler and Bazooka Joe, as I had not the original core version. The paintjob was very disappointing, so I retouched them, starting with Sigrid.

Here is the original version, untouched.

Here is my new one, with just some shadows and lights in the uniform and flesh, and the hair and some other details repainted. Nothing too fancy

Some nice additions since I last passed this way.
I really like the bases.

Great stuff!
