Post by: warrenpeace on March 15, 2012, 07:21:22 PM
"NY Irish" posted this link on TMP yesterday. It goes to a 22 minute film by Norman Alley of the bombing of the USS Panay in 1937. Well worth looking at the whole film:

Notes:
1. US gunboat sailors in blue winter uniforms with unusual, for that time period, beards.
2. Presence of gunboat HMS Ladybird.
3. Presence of Standard Oil tankers.
4. Presence of other ships in convoy fleeing the Japanese attack on Shanghai.
5. Presence of diplomats, foreign correspondents in fedoras, and refugees.
6. AA machine guns in action.
7. Chinese laundry sampan ties to USS Panay as convoy flees upriver.
8. View of Chinese civilians and nationalist soldiers.
9. Flight of crew, civilians, and refugees along "wilderness" riverbank.
10. Later support of USS Oahu and damaged HMS Ladybird.
