Title: Painting Styx Style (New faces to the roster!)
Post by: styx on March 20, 2012, 02:26:52 AM
Inspired by einarolafson, I am taking up the one mini a day challenge. The camera I have is old so the photos are not the highest quality. Some of the black lines in the wings washed out in the picture. *grumble*

First up a Nightgaunt by EM4.

Figure since Tuesday is a few hours off, not a bad idea to get ahead!

From Black Cat Bases Demon line, I plan to use him as a Conglomorate or whatever fits the bill.

Well, this lets me post the next day if I want now before I go to bed....I just noticed I need to crank out a few more models to get caught up again on some figures that are about 1/2 finished.

I like the color combo on her, most of the paints was Foundry, the skirt is Mauve and the shirt is Moss.

Had a productive night and finished 3 models in a few hours. Cranked up the gothic radio station online and enjoyed the lighting storm raging outside while my wife watched Golden Girls Reruns. Figure I would toss out another one early and one of the current ones...

Day 4! From Black Cat Bases: Priest with pistol.

Very nice!! One of my favourite BCB miniatures.

I have to agree, when I was first shopping the figures to buy, I saw that and said, "Interesting, could be fun.."

Then I saw the other painted one and went, "WOW, I have to paint mine..." I think he is a sure fire on a team for the future.

Day 6, last of the Threshold Agents III, this is my least favorite due to the mold line on his face, it was a pain to remove and really messed up the model, it's on the other side so this is the good angle.

Day 7, Anatomically Correct Zombie by Black Cat Bases

The picture washed out the bone color...I do plan to touch up the skin with a few more highlights but it is table worthy.

It's always nice to see a good queue of models, updated often.  I've been enjoying both this and einarolafson's paiting threads (in addition to LPL Season 6).
Great work gents!

Thank you, the funny part is that is the first models painted. I selected a good mix of colors to make something unique and striking.

Looks very nice...especially the rifle looks good.

Yea, I wanted it to look sharp, he is one of the favorites for the cultists.

Love that sniper!! Are you going to paint all your cultists in those colours?

Yes, I plan to paint them all in the same colors. I have 6 of Uncle Mikes (5 done, just need to finish the High Priest) and 2 of Black Cat Bases Cultists.

Great work styx!

Loving it all, but the cultists are my favourites so far.
I am working on a bunch of them at the moment, and they are a bit of a pain, to be honest.
It is probably the colours that I have chosen. Either that or my fading eyes....

Keep it up.

I only have about 6 more to post up. The High Priest, Shotgun, Suicide Cultist, Tommy Gun Cultist, Pistol and another shotgun (last two are Black Cat Bases). Then I am going to shop for some more cultists. I am digging the Pulp figures for the possible next batch due to the large boxes for the price and they also made the .30 caliber gun..hehehhe

Day 10, Adventurer from EM4 Miniatures with shotgun and pipe. Not sure if I like how I did the cap yet  but it is the best job I have done on it so far. This being that I have repainted it a few times until I was happy with this at least.

I may need to go invest in some smaller brushes or go sit down and do an old painting technique I used to teach (odd I am a better teacher than applying the concepts) of sitting down with a sheet of paper and practice using pressure on the tip of the brush to do thin or flat lines to pushing the paint out more with more pressure you apply.

Sadly, I know Parkinson's runs in my family and sometimes I feel like I am showing some early signs as I near 40.

Thanks for the kind words guys! Not sure if I want toss out another cultist or the Fisherman Captain I just finished last night...

Sorry to hear about that!!

The best way to paint freehand lines is practice (usually), a pointy brush and the paint must be watered down.

I do the lines in this order (you can skip highlights or add more stages if you want).

I have to say thank you for posting this.
I am in the process of finishing my four UM Cultists, this being one of them, and seeing this really helps.
I cannot focus so well on the face area, as I have painted the whole figure purple, but this helps identify what is there.

One a day is no mean feat.
Keep up the good work!
Title: Re: Another one a day painting challenge.
Post by: styx on March 29, 2012, 02:18:52 PM
Yea, I am rolling out a few models each day...I wiped out the cultists in a few days all at once. The characters take longer as they are more fine in detail.

I am just worried I may fall behind soon....I am painting my Space Wolves for a major tournament (80 players) the first week of May.

I want to be ready but the seduction of painting Strange Aeons, Old West, Pirates and Gladiators is soooo tempting...I am really enjoying the break from just painting GW stuff...

Day 15, another Cultist from Black Cat Bases. May have to grab the Leader, chainsaw cultist and the one with open arms praying. The machine gunes are a bit too modern. The next batch of photo's I have to keep in mind to brush the excess grass off.

Looking good, styx!

I have just finished painting this chap myself, along with three of his friends.
To be honest, I found them quite difficult. They were quite rough, I think they were damaged in transit when I bought them from another forum member.
Glad to have finished them, as they took far longer than their end result warranted.

What is next on your list?

I had to scrape a few mold lines and flash of resin with a blade also....my worst setback was the Threshold guy with the case and pistol I painted. Half his face was just a wreck. I tried to clean it the best I can, it's not pretty but it is done.

Posting Day 17 a little early, meh? It's tomorrow somewhere in the world!

For your pleasure, the Adventurer with Rifle from EM4 Miniatures. I do feel that my miniature needs glasses the way how he was rolling in the last game! I did boost up his Dex to a 3+, so only now do I fear a 1 or 2!

Thanks, the EM4 is an old line so some stuff lines up well, other things don't, so far all the Male figures I bought I am happy with. The Nightgaunt was a tad small for my expectations, the Det with Tommy Gun is really small, as is the Serpent Man....so it is a mixed bag based on what you need.

He was one of the early guys I liked that I could find with a rifle. I finally found some at Muttonchop that I like that are on my purchase list next...it seems everyone and their mother had a shotgun or even a Tommy Gun (found a few cool ones of these also at Artizan and Brigade).

Day 18! Giant Vermin, Squeek I tell you!

Picked this guy up long ago, found in in my mini rummage box of old D&D figures. I think it is an old TSR figure...not real sure.

I also noticed now that I am done with painted figures, I have about 13ish left to finish painting. Strange Aeons painting has slowed down due to the Space Wolves eating up my time in prep for a tournament in early May.  :(

Well, I think tomorrow is going to be a bust to have something new done....i just don't feel that I will be able to finish anything tonight that I would be happy about. So, I am going to have to catch up within the next day or two...i have a 40k tournament during the weekend but I hope to pick up some time painting again afterwards...The good news is I have several things almost done so there will be another good strong run again.

I am going to take a short break from posting stuff for a short time while I catch up to my painting. There is a GT the first weekend in May and I am working hard to get my Space Wolves ready to appear on the tables for the first time painted entirely, working on the contest, work in general and a few weekend tournaments are going to pull down on my time along with spending time with my wife and friends.

There is already a Book Golem, Deep one and a few other figures about half done and ready to roll off the assembly line. Going to have to sell a few things soon to try to raise some cash.

I will see if can get some size shots and group shots later...the rat upright is HUGE, almost as tall as the Black Cat and EM4 figures!

Some comparison shots would be most useful.
I intend to make my BCB purchases at Salute, would rather see it in the 'flesh' and the range is so big, with loads of useful 'extras' that it makes more sense to do it that way.
Comparisons in advance will help me make up my mind what exactly I want.

Nice Rat, it reminded me that I have some leftover Rats from Mordheim, so will have to dig them out.
Thanks, styx!

What is Salute for you guys? We have stuff here, but nothing that cool on a local level in Florida.

Not an updated, but I did buy some of the new Games Workshop paint and was playing around with the  "Dry" (that can be used for drybrush), going to do a full review on the GW blog (Army of the Week Later) but I wanted to see how the Lilaic would do on the Purple...

the stuff is very thick and almost like makeup...

The paint, the two figures I will be using as the base and test figure.

Here is the figure I did not use the Dry on.

Figure with the Dry Lilaic brushed on and lightlyg washed over again to tone down the brightness.

Picking up on Day 19 and postings won't be daily for awhile. I am still painting Strange Aeons stuff to take a break, otherwise I would go mad painting power armor.

Here is two Mallifux coffins I painted, I bought them when they was 25% off at a LGS and figured they would make cool objective markers. After I posted the photo I noticed the padlocks was missing! Time to flip!

Well, between the contest, my mother-in-law, the trip and the house refinance things are calming down!

I picked up my brush and finally touched some Strange Aeons figs last night...a Ghost, Ancient Spirit and Mummy...just about finished with each. Just finished my two zombie dogs also and ready to primer tonight if possible (well depends Florida weather, rain today).

I did manage to inventory my three plastic cases to "painted", "work in progress" and "to do once I buy some bases".

I ordered everything from Miniature Giant (a Reaper discounter). If you order from them let me know, I can give you my email. If you register with another person's email both of you get credit on money spent. So, in essence both people get free $.

The Mummy is from their out of print (which actually they still sell most OOP figures) figures.

The Werewolf is from Reaper Bones. Check my blog on comments about the company, I saw your comments and we have some similar thoughts I think.

You're far more active on your blog than I am.  I try to post a few times a month, sometimes weekly.  I'm envious that you have regular folks to play 40k with.  There's a games workshop here but of the dozen or so games that I've played there, I didn't really enjoy gaming with any of those players...and I've yet to convince any of my friends to try it, even if I provide the armies to play.  Same goes for Hordes / Warmachine, so I have lots of miniatures that just stand around.

Have you been able to play any Strange Aeons games? I think I saw a post of yours somewhere saying you had no one local to play it with.

40k is a mixed bag around here. Trust me we have our fair share of douchebags that appear at open gaming and tournaments at various stores. What is nice is I have friends that I can just play friendly games with at my house or the cabana at the pool in my community. This fall we will be doing a 2012 Canbanahammer again, we get a few guys over, BBQ some food and throw some dice for games.

As for Strange Aeons, I have had some people say they are interested. The problem is getting together with them and in my area it could be another player an hour away. I just finally found a mailing group in the region of Tampa that does all sorts of stuff including Fanatic GW and historical gaming. So, I am slowly meeting people that play Fanatic, Legends of the Old West, Gladiator, Legends of the High Seas and Strange Aeons, or rather if they don't play they would like to learn. I also just found a group of players that play Disposible Heroes by Iron Ivan (WWII 28mm).

My problem is I work M-F, so either I game after work or weekends. The wife likes weekends and I also try to play some tournaments when possible because it gets the most games in a day in for me. Throw a few issues like my mother-in-law being in the hospital for almost 2 weeks and now at home trying to recover slowly among other things has really slowed the bus down for me to game. Heh, forgot to toss in home improvements such as gardening and fixing the house up....

To me party of the hobby is just enjoying the painting and getting that game in every now and then.

I have to finish the eyes on the Serpent Man but the purple ties into the cultists colors to keep a theme. They are a bit smallish to some of the other EM4 like the rifle and shotgun male adventurers but I also own a python so snakes can come in various sizes so they don't have to be human sized or taller. I like the line since there is one with a pistol, etc....I wanted to buy some, then use some weapons to convert a few more...

Well, I did finish the ghost, mummy and shambler not long ago...things have been busy at night and lazy at times...medical issues with the dog now. Vet tomorrow...oh the pain! $ it will cost.

Serpents are nice, but they can get expensive quick on you eating into your point totals.

Good work, styx!

I have that robot.
(He was going to be the mechanical Butler for Colonel Lambert, the leader of my British VSF force).
Now you are seriously making me consider painting him up for SA.
He would make a wonderful assistant for my Mad Scientist.

The robot is awesome. What kind of lurker / stats are you going to use for him/it?

Depending on how powerful you wanted it to be, I was considering a Zombie stats for when he is on low power, ambling about, going up to Blasphemous Construct on Full Power!

Yea, for a themed game(s) using a Mad Scientist or Former Agent that is a former Threshold agent that goes off the deep end and starts to do bad things.

I will post up two more new pics tonight of the Book Golem and Investigator in a trench coat. Been lazy for about a week due to my Birthday (the  big 40), dealing with one of my dogs and his issues (running around at night barking his head off non-stop) (finally found a sedative that puts him to sleep for the night) and being addicted to Jagged Alliance: Back in Action....

All I can say is I have been a Jagged Alliance fan since JA2 hit over 12  years ago (if I recall right), played Unfinished Business, all the fan made mods...then I walk in Target this weekend with birthday money and find this on the shelf! Plus there is expansion downloads and more on the way...it is the old game but reworked very nicely in a new format and some things changed around. I love it so far! I plan to do a review on the blog soon enough!

Thanks, everyone at work calls me a young man, I think I am the youngest in the department.

Thanks to my Native American genes I age better than most, I look to be in my early to mid 30's...the age shocked many people.

Oh well, had a good bday weekend, ate at Texas De'Brazille steakhouse (where they bring the meat to you on skewers), had Greek by the Sponge Docks on the water another day and walked the Buddhist Temple grounds and had some excellent food they sold for donations to the temple.

You people with your awesome miniatures that I don't own...my wallet's already empty!  Great painting on these.  I'm glad I already have a huge bucket 'o stuff to paint otherwise I'd be trying to order these right now.

Have you thought about profile to use with the book golem?

Thanks all for the feedback and comments!

Anatoli:
I have as either a Blasphemous Construct, possible Conglomerate or Shambler. The Shambler is the most likely as the points are cheaper than the Construct and reflects the paper being able to burn within the books.

Shock, horror!
I missed this posting......glad that I caught it now.

That Book Golem is great, and the character in that investigator is pretty, damn intense.

Well done!

Cracking idea!

Consider it stolen!

Now a double treat for July,

First off to start the holidays (yes, this is a joke, but stores are already putting Xmas stuff on the shelf)...

You better watch out
You better not cry
Better not pout
I'm telling you why
Santa Psycho is coming to town
He's making a list
And checking it twice;
Gonna kill Who's naughty and nice
Santa Psycho is coming to town
He Kills you when you're sleeping
He kills when you're awake
He knows if you've been bad or good
So run like hell for goodness sake!
O! You better watch out!
You better not cry
Better not pout
I'm telling you why
Santa Psycho is coming to town

Love the Santa...I also have that model lying around and I love it because it seems to be based on the Maniac Santa from the very first episode of Tales From the Crypt called "And All Through the House".

Welcome back to the fold, styx!

Some nice new additions to the collection there.

I thought you may have been tempted away with the evils of 40K or something ese.
Glad to that your sanity is safe.... ::) ::) ::)

Of late I have 4 vices...40k 6th, Iron Ivan Dispoable heroes, Strange Aeons and Supersystem

I have only a few figures for SA to finish, some to prime but the weather sucks right now.

40k, I have done one game so far, so no real work on anything on that front until I figure out the rules more. Still the primer situation blows..

Disposable Heroes has a huge German Paratrooper group waiting for basing and primer, but the weather again prevents primer work.

I won't be able to order any more SA or Supersystem figs until next weekend for payday.

Looking good man. I really like the Fishman model too. It's funny, that sculpt isn't as extremely realized as other but I think it fits into the feel of a few other pulp lines really well. This one looks good and hungry.

Looking pretty good.  Do you put any kind of sealer or varnish on your figures after you finish painting them?

It sounds like your gaming interests are pretty similar to mine.  I've been dying to try out the new 6th edition rules for 40k.  I painted some space marines for the first time in almost a year and a half last week.  Do you have threads here for your other stuff?

Keep it up.

Not any varnish in a sense...I have a wash I make up from black ink+water+future floor....the future floor drops the ink easier down into the cracks and makes it easier to move around. The side effect is a type of varnish like when you clean your floors, but still accepts paint afterwards with no problems and no clouding...plus it toughens the paint slightly with the washing...paint still chips but takes a good deal.

Finished this up a few days ago,  but with the way how things have been of late this has just sat to the side.

This is the Glom from the Reaper line. Figure he could stand in as a zombie, Conglomerate and Construct to name a few off the top.

Never seen that Glom figure before. Nice find!

It was on the new release list somewhere around March I think. Maybe a bit earlier. Very nice model. I have found the Miniature Giant (online Reaper  retailer) to be very reasonable with their discounts, free shipping in the US over $25 and spend $25 and they send you a coupon for loyality. Plus they have a buyer program. Register another person and whatever the other person spends both get the credit for it and the credit adds up to free stuff. this applies to both people when you register someone...

That stupid dog hair sneaked into the picture on the one... >:(
