Title: Currently working on (Stallion Strider 10/04 + tree 11/04)
Post by: Dewbakuk on March 21, 2012, 01:50:25 PM
A comment was made to me that I hadn't posted anything recently which I shall blame on moving house, being made redundant, my wife getting pregnant again, blah blah, whinge, whine  ;)

However amongst the hundreds of in progress 'projects' there are a few with a deadline that are coming to fruition. So I shall post a few pics to show what's going on in my little barricaded corner of the house.

So, first up we have the forces of Neo Venezia and it's Papal 'sponsors'.

Excellent stuff, can't wait to see them in the flesh. I really like the Papal Zouaves. You are building quite a force of Venizians :)

Nice to see The most Serene Republic making such a fine appearance. Great project.

In the 16th cent Dalmation Mercenaries were common in the Doge's army. Could give you a source for some Eastern European types if you so desired.

When I saw Malamutes spelling I assumed he was talking about Cythereans.

Actually that's me being inept, it should be Venezian. I'll have to go back and change all of those  ;D
And Venezian is the Venetian spelling of Venetian!

Glad people like them. At some point I'll probably make the heads available.

Thanks, it'll look even better when they get some flags :)
I'll look into that, the Papal troops are loosely based on the 2nd War of Independance but I wasn't sure where to take the Venezian troops beyond Marines and ship crews etc. One day the Venezians will also get some Martian troops but those are a way off yet.

Sounds like my summer project is set. If I do it there will be a mold made.

And Dewbakuk would get a free one for putting up with a thread jacking. lol

Me too, I have one in progress but it's a bit more decorative. I'd like to do one based on the Galleas too with a rotating multigunned turret up front.

I have this pic (amongst many) in my reference file which I love as the oars look like wings...

For those 'in the know', I also intend to do a large golden ship at some point...

Do it!!!

Ermm... where do you think the design I originally showed you and Nick came from? I would like to point out that you poo-pooed it and were highly disparaging of a flat front for the top deck!

If you don't I will  lol

Great! You have until mid April.

Thanks. I really should update stuff for my other pieces as well but I move between stuff too often...

Do you mean the movement trays? They are from www.warbases.co.uk and my figures are on 2p coins. Mr Bibbly also does excellent movement trays of a very similar design at www.oshiromodelterrain.co.uk but in plastic rather than hdf.

Great looking force Dean.

My French allies will be similarly sized (probably a troop unit or two fewer). Pressures of work and a recent family crisis have slowed down my painting output. However, all infantry units are complete and I currently have my two nefs on the painting table (one nef being a repaint and the other being painted from scratch) together with more sailors to crew them.

Don't texture the movement trays yet I need to talk to you about it  :)

Oh dear  ... I've just finished the 'Martian' movement trays for my new troops (my Legionaires will still have Cytherean mud on their boots - i.e. green flocked bases and movement trays) ;)

Cheers Dave. I assume the other forces of our Alliance have a nice steam tech selection as I'm a little short on that front so far. Should have a couple of balloons and a nef done for them though and IF I have time I'll try and get a couple of Papal Impervious Suits (Knights of Malta) done.
Title: Re: Currently working on (Northstar, Perry conv and trees)
Post by: Bullshott on March 22, 2012, 12:25:32 AM
I'm a bit short of steam tech too for my ground forces. So far I have a completed 'Mars pattern' steam tank and a big close combat automaton.

Options I'm looking at include some of the following options:

impervious suits,
a transport walker,
a mobile anti-nef gun.

If we are short on armour we can make up for it via the Prussian allied contingent.

A model for yet another force! This is a concept model for my American West Scientist force. The force currently consists of Artizan cowboys as merc units with unit leaders from the nicer Deadlands range, supported by spider constructs. I decided they needed some 'regular' troops too and had an idea in mind. Thunderchicken asking after Steampunk infantry got me to actually make the conversion and test it out.

I like it so I shall do some proper versions after Salute.

Thanks Ray, ignore the bore on the rifle end :) it was only a test gun build and figure conversion so I didn't bother maintaining the barrel ends, it's supposed to be a 'gatling rifle' but I think it needs shortening a bit in the final version.

He's probably a bit 'battleworn' to stand at parade with your lovely yanks, I don't think he'd get the proper respect :)

This one's not for the Salute game, unless I threw him in as a sniper or somesuch. When Salute is out of the way then I will return to my American expedition and make these guys properly.

Post by: Dewbakuk on March 31, 2012, 12:40:38 PM
Actually, looking at it again, I think the rifle length is fine, it's the barrel length of them all together. Shouldn't be a problem with the final build as it will have more mechanism at the back for ammo and rotation etc which will shorten the barrels a little.

Rather well, a bit slighter as plastics tend to be, but absolutely fine. The phone/camera is at a slight angle so the figures are slightly closer in height than the photo shows but it gives a good idea.

That rifle looks very reminiscent of a rifle-grenade launcher - maybe you should keep him as a squad support weapon? Rifle grenades might be useful anti-vehicle weapons...

Also, on the Venice theme, when Lenny Henry appeared as Othello (in the Northern Broadsides production about 3 years ago) they opted for a mid-nineteenth century setting. Most of the troops were dressed in a sort of blue-grey colour, although Othello and his staff officers were in Venice Red.

Getting there ....

Today's progress:

  • More paintwork on my large 'nef - its starting to look the part now
  • Base coat finished on my cavalry walker - should be a fairly quick job to complete
  • Chevalier impervious suits based and undercoated- should be an even quick job to complete
  • First part of assembly complete for my velocipede aero-cannon - glue is setting prior to mounting the gun
  • Started detailing the last of my areo-matelots

Wow, you've been busy.

Man have I said lately how I love those giant spider mechs? :-)

Cheers Grimm, I have to admit they're some of my favourite creations. They'll be pulling duty with the Venetians at Salute as I'm a little short on tech for them.

I went for Venetian Blue for my troops as I thought it would go well with the red banners. Mr Henry does look rather good in maroon though. I might be tempted to do the staff officer like that...

They are conversions based on the GW Defiler. This link is to a previous thread, page 1 has pictures, page 2 has a 'how to' description.

Doh!  :o  :o  :o

My French have an almost identical walker to your stallions, but in Mars red rather than British racing green! Its due for weathering tomorrow. It should be appearing at Salute to provide close support for my cavalry (if I get the sods finished in time).

Those dastardly spies! Although, they've been shown many, many times in their unpainted state over the years so the spies wouldn't have had to work too hard :)

The flags are removable so I'll be bringing them as Papal support.

Thanks for the pics and the build notes.

Don't be too surprised if one or two of these (or something awfully similar) appear on this side of the pond.

Nice walkers but I really like the trees, can you make me some in normal green? I can wait until after this Salute malarky that Wibblywobbly should note is only EIGHT days aways now

Yeah, should be able to sort something out after salute. Green ones would be easier as the choices of foliage is much better. These are based somewhat on acacia trees, you wanting the same thing?
