Title: Return to the Valley that time forgot. The complete campaign
Post by: Tsune on January 16, 2008, 07:47:07 PM
Hi,

This is my first post and first of all, sorry for my bad English.

Two weeks ago we played the two first scenes of the "Return to the Valley that time forgot", the second part of a game that was played one year ago... I post some pictures of the game.

The first scene was in an African village, where the players had to recluit some porters, etc. and could find some encounters that could give them some advantages (like better guides, amulets...) or recruit secondary characters, or disadvantages. There were no main villains, as the goal was to feel the mood of the adventure and collect the markers (there were 12 possible encounters and only 8 markers). The scene ended when they find out that someone tries to saboteur their equipment. Ah, and a rival expedition has departured two days ago.

Some members of the expedition trying to recruit the porters.

One of the encounters that ocurred was that some "white-slavers" tried to kidnap a girl, that was rescued. This girl was a biologist that was added to the expedition as a seconday character.

Someone saboteurs their equipment. They had to save as much as possible before the flames ruin the equipment. Thas was no easy because they were scattered on the board.

They were not be able to save all the equipment. This had consequences on the second scenes (as they disposed of less recourses to pay the porters, guides, etc).

The picture of the expedition completed, that ended the first scene!!!

The second scene starts when the expedition is arriving by boat to the entrance to the Valley, and are hunted by some natives that are trying to stop them. The goal was simple: enter the Valley.

The pursuit...

The natives catch the boat, but is fiercely defended by a loyal (and drunk) guide that was contracte in the Village (as was the donkey).

The final picture of the second scene, as the natives are rejected. There were hippos, crocs and monkeys too.

I have planned 5 more scenes, incluiding the hunting of dinnosaurs, being captured by the native people of the Valley, the finding of the ruins of a lost civilization and that it has inhabitants too (Conquest pygmis, but they were zombified by Glaaki, a Cthulhu's Mithos deity that inhabit in the central lake of the city). And finally, the escape through the lava caverns of the infamous volcan...

Regards!
Fernando

Fantastic looking game, and your English is excellent. The buildings and figures are great and I really like the use of the flames.

Excellent set up and some great ideas for the adventure. The recruiting of porters is great. I'll have to remember that one.

Love how you used the D&D fire elementals as fire!  I got some for the same reason

Excellent report and photos, very evocative.
Where did you get the native canoes?

The canoes look to me like the John Jenkins ones, available in the UK from TMTerrain. I have some of those. Might be wrong but they look the same.

Great pics. Good looking game. Welcome aboard, Fernando.  :)

Many thanks for posting this, it's very inspirational! In particular, I love "completeness" of the games. Every miniature and every bit of terrain looks well-made and no corners have been cut. It's the kind of thing that inspires a guy like me to continue with my own stuff.

Thank you all very much for you kind words!

Yes, the flames are D&D miniatures fire elementals and I am happy with how they look. In fact, I have purchuased different D&D miniatures for using them for my pulp games.

Matakishi, as Plynkes has said, the boats are from John Jenkins'. They are nice and useful, and easy to paint. I have purchuased his Japanesse temple to use it as a Chinese one, and is very nice.

I was not sure about how would work the first scene, with no villains and the markers only to find the encounters without opposition to fight for them. Almost all games I had seen from .45 rules, and the ones that we have played, were based in a competition between two or more factions, and in this game all the players were in the same side, so I was not sure. Although originally the game was writen for the .45 rules, finally I used Astounding tales rules in this game as I wanted to play all the scenes in one single day, and with these amount of figures, I thought that the game would be faster (but as you can see, I only was able to play the two first scenes), but with the inclusion of some ideas and rules from Rick's rules that I like very much (as the markers for the encounters, etc.). But, in fact, it worked very, very well, because the players, wishing to collect the possible benefits for themselves, in the practice compited in a friendly way for them.

I think that it helped the idea that there were 12 possible encounters but only 8 markers (so the luck would have an impact too in the develoupment of the scene), and that the event of the saboteur could happen as one of the encounters (I used 12 cards and a jocker. Each time a marker was taken, they had to choose one card that had its event associated. The jocker was the special event detonator, but I placed it in the deck only after the four marker was taken). Was a lot of fun... The encounters that they found were very different: from being cheatted with a monkey (the player thought that it was buying an old idol and was very fun, specially for the rest of players), until the white-slavers incident, witch doctors, native guides, the donkey...

A fun idea, was to say the players that the goal of the game was to proof the existence of the Valley, and that they had different ways to do it: collect and come back with physical proofs, or with the film of the expedition. And that I would distribute fame points if his heroic actions were recorded in the film, as the film was going to be shown to the public. This caused that the players wanted to be "in picture" all time, trying to making thing in front of the camera, and gain seconds of fame, etc.... and that was the reason of the final shot of the expedition in the first scene.

Well, as I now have time to improve some of the ideas, mainly from the great work that Grimm is doing in his WIP for Tactica and some other work from this forum people. The las one has been the painting of some 15mm dinosaurs from LKM direct, to use them as compys (I have not be able to get the HLBS old ones) in 28mm. They are really nice, and if anybody wants to know how they are and their size in comparison with a 28mm, I can make a picture.

Thank you and regards,
Fernando

Hi Fernando,

A bit late here, but along with everyone else, I'm also very impressed!

Great pictures, lovely scenery & a first-class write-up. Well done indeed.

I've never seen those D&D fire thingies before and they look so good [and convenient] that I must try & get some.

My favourite pic was the "team photo" at the end of the first installment - very imaginative & made me chuckle to myself.

Now though, I hope you realise you have to post pics of all your subsequent adventures - or else!

Hi,

Last weekend we played three more scenarios of the adventure. This time we used the .45 rules and we all were very happy with them.

Next week I will post some pictures and a game report (I am waiting for most of the pictures that were taken by one of the players). Until then, I can post some pictures I took myself.

1. The expedition had to take proofs of their findings:

2. The king of the Valley appears in the game:

3. A big game hunter thinks it will be a great trophy:

4. This one has not been played, but I has been testing the scenario myself. It will be the next one: The pit of death!

5. The expedition was ambushed by some velociraptors.

Thank you for your kind words!

I have built two versions of the village fence, the normal one and the destroyed that you can see in the picture, that I will place when the T Rex arrive.

The stegosaurus is from a box of six dinosaurs (as JollyBob says, the TRex is from the same box). I found the box in El Corte Ingles (Spain), but in the box says that is from Eduland, but produced in China from Procon (Asia) Ltd. Hope this help.

Hi,

The player has sent me the pictures of the three scenarios. Now, I will post a report of the first scenario. Later I will post the other two reports.

Intro.

The expedition has arrived to the Lost Valley entrance. It is a subterranean passage that opens into a great cavern. An ancient door, blocked by rubble, stands beetween them and the Valley.   But this is not their main problem. The continuous rains outside have increased the level of the waters and threatens with flooding the cavern. The passage they come through is flooded now, indeed, and they are trapped inside!!

(In fact, this is an adaptation of the first scene in the Thrilling Expeditions suplement).

Their mission is to open the door and save as much equipment as possible...

A picture of the board:

The lagoon at the edge of the board is the flooded passage they came through. The water has joined to other unknown passages...

Another picture of the board:

This is the deployment of the scenario. The players distributed their figures to arrive to the markers as soon as possible. In the bottom-right corner you can see the porters, a mule and a native guide that, frightened to death, are praying to their gods (in the practice, they can not be used in the scenario except to exit the board when the door was opened). You can see the boxes, chests and rest of equipment pieces that has been used as markers in the scenario.

The heroes start to save the equipment, but some tremors open wide the breach and the water starts to flood the cave faster... the heroes had problems to move in the lower part of the cave!

And suddently, a nasty surprise!:

It seems that the tentacles owner has been causing the tremors... and now he wants something to eat.

He is a formidable foe, and with a terrible blow, knocks down the big game hunter, injuring him. And he tries to catch Benito the chimp. He grabs his legs, but at the last moment, the chimp avoided to be dragged into the lake!
Not a good time for the heroes...

Some of the heroes went to help his partners, and after some gunfire, the creature decides that there must be easier preys to capture...

But, in the meantime, the water level has not stopped to grow, and the lower half of the cave is under the water now. The heroes that had been fighting the creature, advance to the entrance, and part of the equipment is abandoned. And Benito the chimp starts to have problems as the water arrives to his chin...

One of the heroes tries to open the door. His effort is recorded by the camera (We have introduced a rule that they have to take proof of their findings and can get Expedition points taking physical proofs or recording them).

At last, the door is opened, but more tremors cause that the water flow is increased even faster. The porters run to the exit, and the heroes help them to exit the board.

At last, all the expedition, except for one unfortunated porter, got out alive. But it is a narrow scape:the last two heroes and the chimp had to spent all their heroe points and had to make two test to swim underwater in their last turns to survive and gain the exit...

Next one I will post the next scene gamed.
Regards!

4th Scenario game report: Into the Valley (this is an adaptation of the Thunder of the Lost World scenario, from the Thrilling Expetidions supplement).

The expedition has entered the Valley from the underground pass. Soon, they find a human settlement at the opposite bank of a nearby river. In their side bank, from the distance they can see some people collecting fruits. They decide to make contact with them, but then, the sound of a horn fills the air and the people scatter in terror. A pack of dinnosaurs enter the scene looking for preys.

The heroes have to save the people and guide them to the opposite side of the river, into the settlement.

A picture of the board: the heroes deployed at the right side of the board. At the opposite side, you can see the river and the wooden bridge to the settlement.

The heroes run to the markers (that can be the people they have to save or other surprises) before the dinnosaurs (a great pack of carnivore compys-like dinnosaurs) hunt them:

But it is not an easy task. They first have to convince the settlers that they want to help them, and when the language is a barrier, a heroic action can speak better!! Here, when a pack of dinnosaur is going to hunt down a young girl just in front of the eyes of a hero,  Benito the chimp jumps and cries to get their attention, and the dinnosaurs change their target. Benito soon realizes that perhaps it has not been a good idea!:

But the heroes are not alone! To aid them, Rhana, the Golden Godness of the Valley, appears in the board, with his loyal Zoso, and fights the dinnosaurs:

Here you can see the situation at the moment: the heroes seem that they would be able to save the people, though the dinnosaurs have managed to kill a girl. But with the aid of Rhana, all seem easier, as the inhabitants entrust her. The heroes have killed almost all the dinnosaurs, but only to see that new ones enter the board:

Some settlers gain the bridge and cross to safety:

But the fight have its victims also in the heroes side. The native guide is killed and devoured by the dinnosaurs:

And when the situation seems controlled, an unexpected visitor appears. Attracted by the gunfire and the smell of blood, the King of the Valley enters the board!:

The big game hunter laughs at the vision of the great predator. Points his gun and fires! The projectiles impact the beast torso, hurting him. But it is not enough to kill him and, enraged, the T-Rex charge! His teeth tears the hunter legs easily, hurting him bad...:

The heroes open fire, but the guns seem that do nothing to the beast. Benito the chimp tries to get his attention, only to be bitten and almost swallowed... and then Zoso charge the King, giving his beloved owner, Rhana, and the heroes a way to scape. But it has his price...:

The heroes and Rhana, from the bridge, look back only to see that the T-Rex move away... thanks to the sacrifice of the brave Zoso.

Now you can find the game report of the campaign's 5th scenario: The dinos hunt

In the previous scenario, the heroes were able to save the settlers from the dinnosaurs attack. They rest in the settlement a few days, and convince Rhana to guide them deep into the "lands where the dragons roam" (well, I should explain that, in the first campaign, the expedition found that the inhabitants from this settlement were descendants of an ancient viking expedition to the dark continent... yeah, it is pulp after all...  ;) ). Rhana is hesitant as, apart from the dinnosaurs, an unknown tribe of warriors has move into these lands and is a very dangerous trip. But this is not enough to scare our heroes and, after filming the settlement and its habitants, the expedition continues its travel.

After two days of march, they camp and the expetidion is prepared to take proof of his findings.

We have developed some simple rules to test if the expedition have taken proofs enough to consider if it is a success or not. So, each dinno or finding (ruins, etc.) have Expedition Points. If they can take it back to the civilization, they gain all the points. If they are only able to take a part or some physical proof, they divide the points won by two, and if they only can film it, the points are divided by four (the public can think the film is made with models, like King Kong  :?). When the campaing will be over, we will count the proofs taken with them, as they can lose them (and, in fact, they will lose them in the next scenario  lol).

In addition, the heroes who are filmed, can gain Reputation Experience. This will cause a friendly competition beetwen the heroes willing to have a leading role in the film. Each turn, they test who will move the cameraman, and so, film his own heroic feats! (one of the expedition members is an actor and have a bonus test as the camera loves him  :-*).

The scenario objective is to collect as much proofs (physically of filming them) as possible, before the night arrives (a test is made each turn and it concers to the conditions of visibility) and the heroes have to come back to the camp.

The expedition ready to start. The natives and the mule can take proofs back to the camp:

The heroes rush looking for markers in order to be the one who makes the biggest discovery for the science... and glory! It makes that they scatter around the board, and the camera do not know where to film...:

And when the danger appears... they are alone! A group of ambushed velocyraptors attacks a lonely heroe. Luckily for him, the rifle range is long enough to be helped:

But this is the land of terrible beasts, and one of them appears! It is the last day for the native porter. The snake is an event (the Brutus Boa, that follows her discoverer and, if not feed beetwen scenarios, she eats a follower of the expedition... Is this event perhaps related to the discovery of that rare medallion in the cave scenario??):

The expedition is witnesses of one of the most spectacular fights! A tryceratops feels threatened and charges the giant crocodile and in his charge, stomps one of the heroes!:

They film the fight and some other discoveries, when an old friend enters the scene: the King of the Valley, hurt last scenario, has followed them and roars in triumph! Who said that the cold blood animals did not have a good memory? The big game hunter shoots again, but miss:

This is a panoramic view of the board. You can see that the tryceratops has won the titanic fight. Also, two porters load a dead velocyraptor, and some heroes approach slowly to the dead crocodile to see if the can do something with it, taking care of not provoking the tryceratops:

Thankfully, a pack of gallimimuses calls the attention of the T-Rex (yes, he is revengeful, but is hungry too, and his instincts are stronger than his memory). This gives enough time to the heroes to flee:

It is almost night, and the heroes run to be present in the crocodile filming. After all, who will know that they have not killed the beast if they want? ::):

The night comes and it is the end of the scenario. Really? Not sir!! AT the end of the game, they are divided more or less in two groups, and so they come back to the camp. Why then, when the second group arrive to the camp, their parters have dissapeared??? and of whom are the fresh stains of blood? and the missing equipment? and more important:where are the camera and the films!?!?!?

All these questions and more will be answered in the next chapter of the campaing that (with luck) will be played next week. Would be able the heroes to rescue his friends from THE PIT OF DEATH??  :o

In addition, the heroes who are filmed, can gain Reputation Experience. This will cause a friendly competition beetwen the heroes willing to have a leading role in the film. Each turn, they test who will move the cameraman, and so, film his own heroic feats! (one of the expedition members is an actor and have a bonus test as the camera loves him).
What an excellent idea! That film crew just became far more important!

Thank you. It resulted in very fun moments, as anybody wanted to control the camera or tried impossible o bold actions if the camera was recording in the area, or the players trying to agree to film a wide part of the board and then try to lure the action to this zone...

There were some more simple rules like if something was happening in front of the camera, the camera could not be moved until filmed (new dinnosaurs, events or heroic actions, fights) for one turn.

It is easy to advance the egocentric behaviour of the players.. eh, heroes  ;).

Thanks!

Well, we are thinking if we can go to Tactica this year, so perhaps it could be possible, but to play your lovely Innsmouth game  :D.

On the other hand, if some of you come to Mallorca (perhaps you have been in holidays here?), I am sure we can arrange something and we will very pleased to do it.

Last thrusday we played finally the last two secenarios of the campaign. I am going to post now the game reports and some pictures of the games.

6th scenario: The Pit of Death!!

At the end of the past scenario, the dino hunt, the heroes are divided more or less in two groups as they go back to the expedition camp. But when the second group arrive to the camp, their parters have dissapeared and they find fresh stains of blood and missing equipment.

As they are trying to find clues to know what has happened, Rhana, the blond godness of the Valley, emerges from the jungle and tells them that the warrior tribe that inhabits the area has captured their friends and took them to their village where, probably, are going to be sacrified to the reptile gods!

As you can guess, the heroes go to rescue their friends and, tracking the prints arrive to the village, that is protected by a fence. There is an entrance guarded by two warriors, who seem more interested in the music of drums and chanticles that can be heared from inside. What is happening there?:

The answer is that one of their friends, Winston Winsther, has been thrown to the Pit of Death! and the villagers are feasting it. Is perhaps because he is the porter of the strange medallion they found in the cave? He is not sure, as he can not understand a single world of the speech that the Shaman and the tribe lider give him before throwing him to the pit... The expedition porters and the cameraman are prisioners in one hut, while the other captured heroe is thrown into another hut, where he find another captured european explorer, the Proff. von Hauptman.

Here you can view another picture, from the village side. Almost all the natives are watching the pit, with their attention put in the approaching slaughter:

The board is 60x120cm. One part represents the village with a fence that separates it from the jungle and the roaming beasts. One of the hut contains a hero and the Proff., and another one the porters and the cameraman:

This was a difficult and complex scenario... the players deployed in three separated groups:
- One of the heroes in the pit of death, trying to survive the great gorilla inside, and surrounded by the tribe warriors that are looking the spectacle.
- Another one and the Proff, prisioners in one of the huts.
- The porters and the cameraman in another hut.
- The rest of the group, in the jungle, trying to enter the village through the guarded entrance.

The objective is to rescue the expedition members, find and take with them as much of their robbed equipment and proofs as possible, exit the village and, in the jungle, find Rhana who will wait for them to guide them to the Valley exit through the Volcano pass!!

Will they be able to acomplish all the objectives and survive the challenge?? You can bet! It does not look an easy task at all!

Luckily for them, the adventure films have nor arrived to the Valley yet, and with the "I feel not good" trick, the hero lures one of his guardians inside the hut, where is knock down with a precise blow. And take his weapons. The other guard, looking with envy at the pit espectacle in the distance, does not find out what has happened to his partner...:

At the same time, the heroes that were in the jungle, approach silently to the guards and eliminate them before they could give the alarm. Seems like the fortune is with them...:

And what is happening in the pit? the gorilla charge the heroe, but he dodge the beast thanks to his experience with the martial arts. The beast roar with fury, but is not able to catch the heroe, that dodge him one time and another. The natives start to be disconformed with the espectacle. They wanted blood, but the blood of the white man! But it is a good thing for the group, as all the time he can gain with the fight and having the natives watching it, is time his partners have to acomplish their goals easily:

The big game hunter (the one that was prisoner with the Proff. in the hut) exit the hut and before the guardian can react, blows him. They are now free, and soon they meet with his partners that has entered the village:

They start searching for his equipment and more weapons, while trying to plan how they can help Wiston in the pit with all the warriors in their way...

Unfortunately for the heroes, some women see them and shout the alarm. In spite of the noise around the pit, some warrior hear the shouts. In a few seconds, the news that more white men are inside the village spread and the warriors take their weapons and run for them:

The heroes are in clear disadvantage versus the great number of warriors and retreat, trusting that their modern weapon balances the fight. But seems that the warriors are not afraid of the gunfire. On the other hand, the Brutus boa appears as a formidable foe and stops the natives in the middle of the village:

But this is not enough and the situation starts to seem dangerous for the heroes. The vile Shaman hurts the big game hunter with his poisoned dagger, forcing him to move back, while his companion covers him, being surrounded himself:

The situation is delicate and seems that the heroes are on the verge of failing when an old friend appears in scene: the King of the Valley himself that, thanks to the heroes that have eliminated the guardians, has approached the village without being noticed. The T-Rex breaks the fence and enters the village searching to his old friends!:

I am going to post the game report of this scenario and the last one now, but I am a little slow  :(

The fight spreads around the village, and nobody gives a chance to their foes. The heroes kill some warriors, but they are hurt heavily in the process. The Brutus boa is killed finally, and Benito the chimp is near to be swallowed by the T-Rex (a 0 in the dice), but finally and helped by some hero points, avoid it.

The presence of the King of the Valley determines the flow of the battle, as anybody avoids him. The little skirmishes end when he is near, starting in another point of the village, as the heroes try to recover the equipment and rescue the porters and friends.

Is he alone? no! he only is the last one to run from the King. Luckily, he avoids him rolling under the feet of the dinossaur and hiding into the hut:

Meanwhile, Winston has won the beast, but nobody has been there to watch a great victory of the man versus the beast! He exit the pit finally and runs towards his friends:

The heroes, knowing that all of them are safe now (or at least able to exit the village), decide to scape the village, although they have not recovered all the equipment and they have not enough proofs for the expedition being considered a success. But, hey, their lives are more valued. One of them throws two dinamite cartridges to cover their retreat, and hoping the T-Rex will delay their pursuers as they will have to protect the village from the beast before pursue them, run:

And so, they run into the jungle where, without problems, find Rhana that hurry them to the Volcano pass. There is no time to rest, as they can hear in the distance the war drums again, calling the warrior into the pursuit!:

The heroes will start the next scenario with the wounds they have finished this one. Next, the last scenario: Across the Sacred Mountain of Fire!

And now, the last scenario of the campaign. Scenario 7th: Across the Sacred Mountais of Fire!

The heroes, guided by Rhana, arrive to the mountain pass. There, they say goodbye to the blond godness and, without loosing time, enter the pass in order to leave the Valley. The sound of the war drums has accompanied them since they left the native village, and the warrior cries are heard increasingly nearby...

They enter the pass that cross the mountain, and soon they arrive to its entrails. The lava flows between great rocks, and some tremors announce that it is not a safe place to stay. They look around to find the way across the lava river, but they can not hesitate, as the sound of the pursuit arrive to them.

The objective of the scenario is to locate the exit and leave the Valley before the volcano explodes! There were 10 encounters across the board: two of them were clues to locate the exit and have to be found both to do it. The rest were some traps like lava geisers, a dead explorer with a book that points to another Lost World in South America (the Lost Valley III  ;D), and other things.

There were some scenario rules:
- a counter to know when the pursuers arrive (when the counter arrived to 10 a group entered de board).
- a deck of 14 cards. A card had to be selected each turn. 4 of them were rocks falling from the ceiling by tremors in an area of the board (at random), 8 of them were nothing, and the other two were big tremors: the first of them would be a nasty surprise and announces the possible explosion of the volcano, and the second one announces that in five turns the volcano will explode!!, but they could use hero points to gain aditional turns (two points each addional turn).

There were some more rules, but I will explain them later.

A picture of the board:

The group start to cross the pass slowly towards the rock bridge, while trying to locate the exit:

But there is not time to loose! The pursuers already are there! They seem to be very angry and charge them without hesitation:

But then, something terrible happens!: a great tremor breaks the rock bridge, that falls into the lava. Too soon!!!! Exhausted and wounded as they are, this is a very bad news to them, as it requires a big leap to reach the other side now...and only some of them feel confident to do it. Pressed by the enemies, some of them decide to take another way that at first seemed more difficult, but now is an option as good as the original one:

Soon the combat starts, but it is not a good place to fight. A bad step and it can be the last one! And the warriors prove to be deadly foes en close combat:

Will Wiston survive? a Dodge test allows him to grasp the edge at the last moment, and when the warrior is going to push him to the lava, a friendly shoot makes the savage flee. Wow!  :o

Title: Re: Return to the Valley that time forgot. 5th game report added: the dino hunt
Post by: Tsune on February 22, 2009, 12:23:16 AM
But he is not the only one in danger. The warriors are pressing hard, and the edge is closer at each blow... One of the heroes, the archeologist, makes a last stand to gain time for his friends to cross to the other side:

But he can not stand more time, and finally falls to the lava!... to land on a floating rock that at this precise moment was there!! (there were two floating rocks that moved 1d6" each turn following the river flow... to help the heroes in their way to the other side, and luckily for him, it was under him when he fell  o_o). But he was not free of danger, as the rock do not seem a sure place to stay (each turn, a test has to be made: 1-3 the rock continued to float, 4-6 the rock would sink under the hero weight):

Meanwhile, Winston had been able to climb and reach close to the rest of the group, but there is not place enough for all them as the pass is very narrow. They will have to fight each inch of it, as more warriors enter the board and, even worse, a new big tremor announces that the volcano is going to explode!! (they have now 5 turns to leave the board, and the exit has not been located yet...):

At this moment the future looks very, very dark for our heroes... rocks start falling from the ceiling, the volcano is going to explode in a few minutes and the natives are winning the combat and pressing the heroes. This is a very sad moment in the campaign as Benito the chimp jumps to avoid the warriors and falls on Winston, who is on the verge of losing the balance. There is no room for both of them and having to decide among the chimp and himself, Winston push the chimp and Benito falls into the lava river...  :'(

But there is not time to cry for the falled ones... the archeologist have been closed to the coast by the lava flow, but the rock sinks and the heroe has to make a great jump to reach the shore (and a few heroe point are used in the attempt). But he is now safe... or not? At least, a weak light appears at the horizon, the exit is at last located!:

But it is a weak light indeed... the warriors continue harassing the heroes and Prof. von Hauptman has to stop to fight them and close the pass to the pursuers:

Will the heroes success? At this moment it seems NOT!  The volcano will explode in two turns and some of them are very far from the exit... and they are not able to save too much hero point as are used to avoid be thrown to the lava or to increase the jump distance. They are tired and wounded badly and each jump seems more difficult each time. At this point, the face of some heroes (and players) were reflecting a sad feeling:

Only the persevering attitude of the heroes continues the fight, but it is not enough as it is a race versus time too, and each turn of fight is a turn less to reach the exit:

Now, only the hero point used to avoid the explosion allows the group to be alive. Some of them has reach close to the exit, but they do not leave the board, trying to help his mates shooting to the warriors or only to be able to use their own hero points to avoid the explosion one more turn giving their friends the possibility to reach the exit. Would have they managed the points well enough? Don't know, but some are used to avoid an unexpected lava geiser:

Not, Benito was no saved!  >:(

But the player that plays Winston will have to live with that, as the rest of players booed him all the game from that moment  lol, and two days later, when we were speaking about the games, the players continue to remember poor Benito and the treachenous player  lol
Title: Re: Return to the Valley that time forgot. 5th game report added: the dino hunt
Post by: Tsune on February 22, 2009, 01:36:04 AM
A view of the game situation: the cameraman decides to throw the camera and be able to run faster and some heroes are close to the exit, while others are running towards it. On the other hand, Winston and von Hauptman remain in close combat with the warriors, while other natives start to throw their lances from the distance. But the bad luck appears in the form of a rock falling from the ceiling and killing the two remaining porters that were close to reach the exit, and almost one of the heroes who had to make an heroic jump to avoid be caught in the accident:

At last, Winston manages to withdraw from combat, and shoots down his pursuers. The warriors remaining seem to think that it isvery risk to try to cross the narrow pass under the gunfire, and shout and throw their lances from the distance:

The volcano is going to explode, and there are no remaining point to avoid it. Almost all the heroes could leave the board, but not all. Proff. von Hauptman shouts "go, go!" and a grin appears in his face when a big tremor shakes the area:

Winston is the last one leaving the mountain pass, but not before looking back to their friend. But nothing can be made to save him (not hero points remaining). The rocks fall with the continous tremors and the heroes have to run for their lives, as the pass falls apart and the exit is buried under the debris...

THE END

Well, I think they have been two great and very fun games. They both were a big challenge, and at the last one seemed, until last, that half the group would perish in the volcano. Some of the players thought it, and when finally were able to reach the exit, were very, very happy. They escaped from the grasp of death and that was very pulpish!!

I think, on the other hand, that they used a pair of hero point that they did not had to retard the volcano one more turn, but it was fine  ;)

At the end, they had insufficient proofs to be considered a successful expedition (only 26 and they had to obtain 30 as they had to left a lot of equipment in the native village). But I am sure that, with the films they carry with them to the civilization, it will be easy to obtain new funds for a new one, this time to South America as the book they found points.

Thanks for reading. I hope it has been fun.
