Title: Adventures in Hyboria with CROM
Post by: southheaven on April 02, 2012, 11:08:57 AM
Since i get much inspiration from this forum, i tought it might be time to give something back. Iīm about to start a small campaign in the Black Kingdoms this summer, using the old Mongoose D&D rules, perhaps in the Microlite version. For miniatures i take everything i can get my greedy hands on. ;)
Since some things will be recycled for other projects, so bases will not always fit, buildings could be done better, etc. Especially if the short campaign will be a success, there might be a follow up with a short campaign in Cimmeria or Aquilonia and i dont want to start all over again.

I started a blog, so i can keep all the information together for ease of my players. The adress is http://hyboriaadventures.wordpress.com (http://hyboriaadventures.wordpress.com). Iīm sorry that it is in german , but posting in english would take away more time from painting and building.

Here are some pics, from things i have done so far:

Will be sending away a sculpt tomorrow which might fit with your project. When I get a casting back and painted I will post the picture.

Good start to the project. There are loads of miniatures which would fit.Looking forward to seeing what else you post.

I love seeing Conan inspired stuff.  :-*
I'm really tempted to start a project myself.
Thanks for posting.

Thanks for your welcome!  :) If you have any questions, i will gladly try and answer them in english. I now how well bablefish or Google translates texts to other languages. lol

Today i added 2 articles of the technical kind. One about stripping miniatures of old paint and another about how to use childstoys for serious playing. ;)

Very nice - managed to resist the urge when Matakishi was doing his Conan thing and am getting sorely tempted again. Might have to make do with reading a few more Conan novels for now!

Where did the apes come from?

All I wanna know is

Will there be a giant Snake or snake temple?
Title: Re: Another Conan-Project
Post by: southheaven on April 03, 2012, 07:00:27 PM
@Faust Iīm afraid your chances to get the archer are pretty slim. He was done in 1988 by Hobby Products a german company that no longer exists. :( Iīve got some of the miniatures by that firm when i started roleplaying. I later learned, that they had their office just down the street from where i life now.

@Thantsants The apes are from www.obeliskminiatures.com, another german company. They didnīt do any new models lately, but you can still get their miniatures. They have some nice baboons and hyena too, but a crappy homepage.

@Cherno At first i wanted to go with a spider theme. I even got a cool spider demoness miniature, but spiders are not that typical for Conan. He either fights other humans, snakes or winged apes. Sooo, i will have to build a snake temple, yes. ;) I will probally build an actual temple building and a dungeon beneath to explore.

Great start to your new project. I eagerly await seeing more stuff. Interesting that you started in the Black Kingdoms rather than the obvious more northerly kingdoms.

ENOUGH IS ENOUGH! The motherf*****g snakes are done, so we can start gaming!  :D

I turned this:

into this:
Toy rubber snakes with a little inspiration from google picture search.

@Scurv Sounds great! I will look out for them. Last friday i got some more Hobby Products minis, even a forest giant, that was really cheap. Will post a picture of him, when we reach the nothern kingdoms. ;)

@Odo The idea to start in the Black Kingdoms came to me, because i wanted to reuse some of the terrain or miniatures in other games. Iīm playing Haqqislam in Infinity the Game, so i can use the buildings with a little touch of scifi there too. The jungle terrain will be used in Freebooters Fate for the amazons. Saves a lot of time that way.

Any ideas from the Conan fanatics out there?

Big Spider gets a checkmark for starring in Tower of the Elephant. My stable of Conan foes began with Reaper's serpent-men, and now I'm filling the ranks of a Beastman army. Inspiration comes mostly from the comics, and artists like Buscema, Nebres, Norem...all the guys that worked for Marvel and Warren back then.

Those toy vinyl snakes look great, I'll have to find a vendor for colossal critters. A common foe I can't find seems to be the degenerate "vampire humanoids". For a good match they need thin bodies with a troll-like shamble, combined with a demon-bat head. Ghouls are close but often sculpted for a gothic graveyard setting.

My camera broke today.  :( Hopefully it will at least start working again on friday, when our gaming groups meets and iīll have a chance to test Matakishis CORM rules. Iīm currently building things i need for a little scenario.

By the way iīm starting to write my blog bilingual. I donīt know, how to differentiate optically between the german and the english part, so that the english part will be easily found. Or is it ok without an optical help?
I have even included a Kategorie "English" to help you find those articles containing english language.

Camera still broken! :P

Whatīs the most obvious thing to do, if you donīt have a snake statue at hand? Make a tentacled frog statue! :D
(http://i359.photobucket.com/albums/oo34/iggy/PICT1275.jpg)

Only have one miniature to go and finish five terrain pieces tomorrow for a little try run of CROM at our game club meeting on friday. I even build a 60 by 60 cm gaming board. The frog statue thing will get gems for eyes and been put on a small ruin piece.

I am going to go with some Republican Romans someday.  IMO the classical look of them fits the Aquilonian look.

Itīs no fun having a broken camera and being broke.  ;D So here is another crappy picture. :P

Since i have invited some friends over for some barbecue and a game of CROM at the end of the month iīm working hard to make the deadline. Right now iīm painting some slave traders, three wise men and some serpent warriors. After that there are some more civilians and some warriors awaiting paint. And i still have to build the city for the first scenario. So there is still a lot of work ahead.

After some test games of CROM at the local gaming club people are asking for more. So there will gladly be a lot Conan in the future. :D What weīll add to CROM are skill cards with special feats the characters can use once in the game.

What iīm looking for are some cultist miniatures and wings to convert some apes. Any suggestions? I would prefer featherly wings for the apes.

[EDIT]The civilians in the picture are mostly Foundry Ancient Egypt with some Hobby Products warriors and thief and a snake priest from some board game.

@ Fates Fickle Finger
Quote
On a side note has anyone got any suggestions for Aquilonians?
According to the comics or to Howard's writings? Illustrations -specially in comics- generally betray the texts. for instance in 'Black Colossus' the Khorajan knights are depicted in full plate armor (an unique case in Hyborian times, -with the possible exception of Poitain?), and they are followed by an equal number of 'impoverished Hyborians' who cannot afford a horse or a suit of armor. Then in the comics the knights wear only a light helmet, and the 'poor ones' are clad in mail from head to toe!
Aquilonians wear a mixture of mail and plate (what Howard calls 'jaseran'). Regarding armor Aquilonia seems more advanced than the other 'Hyborian' nations. When Conan ('The Hour of the Dragon') wears a suit of chainmail it is identified by a non-specialist as 'Nemedian armor'. Also, the regular Bossonians and Gundermens (weapons wise English / Welsh longbowmen and early Renaissance Swiss, respectively) are more heavily armored than the Shemite archers in Koth service, so would be extra-heavy infantry.
Most other 'Hyborians' would look like taken from 'Prince Valiant', I suspect.

Guess what!  :D

Finally got some accus and a recharger for my old digital 2.1 Megapixel reflex camera. Hurray! So in the picture you can see the playing surface, where the magic will happen. Itīs a 5' wide two part frame which you can put differnet 48" inlays into. Itīs not actually black, but was painted using a dark brown glaze. The frame is so wide, that you can easily place cards from your favourite pirate skirmish onto it or even roll your dice using a shaker.
This specific surface inlay is a desert ground. Conan and a Turian, Turanian, whatever are inspecting the battle ground, finding itīs way to empty.

So, between painting miniatures like crazy i will start posting pictures again.

Thanks for the compliments! :D

My neighbours gonna hate me! Using my electro drill and saw on a sunday.  o_o

For the first scenario i needed something to keep track of the time of day. After sunset they will be able to break into houses or perform other criminal activities. It is not finished yet, but i think you can see what i did here. The disc will have a sun on one side and a moon the other. When the sun is up the first numbers ( 1-7 ) are valid, when the moon is up you count the numbers 8 -14.

Not quit sure, how to paint the base plate of that thing. Any suggestions are welcome.

A dog guide and and Iranian Warrior

Three sages from the Morning Land ;)

A bunch of civilians will be finished this evening. Then there are about 15 Minis left. Started building the city and hopefully will have first pictures of finished buildings by wednesday evening.

Title: Re: Another Conan-Project
Post by: southheaven on June 19, 2012, 01:45:06 PM
@luidinuovo I canīt really remember. I think the guy with the spikey iron helmet was produced by Heartbreaker. I owned the miniature for 15-20 years now and filed of the base.

@blacksmith The Vendhyan Slavetraders are Foundryīs Baluchi Swordmen 2 ( DA5/1 ) from the Dark Africa range.

It has been pretty cloudy today so the pictures turned out a bit dark.

So hereīs some painted women as the are called*
(http://i359.photobucket.com/albums/oo34/iggy/P6190025.jpg)
(Bronze Age Miniatures)

Some bandits, that didnīt turn turn out that well, but considering that they have been a quick paintjob they are fine. "Voldemort" seems to be a miscast. ;)
(Perry)

and a bunch of civilians.
(Foundry and Warlord Games)

There are still 3 civilians, roman slave girls like the one with the red dress, to be finished and then itīs Zulu time.

*if itīs against forum policies i can remove or modify the picture.

I achive the illusion of productivity by getting my lazy ass down and finishing some half painted miniatures. ;)

Today iīve played architect and started building the city. Much "inspiration" has been taken from Matakishiīs blog. I say "inspiration" because i nearly rebuild some of the buildings. :D
I took photos nearly hourly so you can follow the progress. The "kitchen table" is 120x75cm.

1500 - some buildings have been done previously
(http://i359.photobucket.com/albums/oo34/iggy/P6200028.jpg)

1600 - for ease of storage a small house(upper left corner) will fit into a slightly larger house and two larger houses will fit into a big house(right)

1700 - didnīt want plain house fronts for the big houses like with the smaller buildings so i had to become creative which took time
(http://i359.photobucket.com/albums/oo34/iggy/P6200030.jpg)

1800 - had some tea, started building the Matakishi Tower
(http://i359.photobucket.com/albums/oo34/iggy/P6200031.jpg)

1900 - finished tower, build two small additions for the roofs of the big houses. They will fit in two up to that empty empty house when packed away.

2000 - started getting tired, made some of those white doors you can add to buildings to have additional, modular placable exits.

2100 - rearranged the table and made some additional archways
(http://i359.photobucket.com/albums/oo34/iggy/P6200034.jpg)

2200 - really tired, started building the prison
(http://i359.photobucket.com/albums/oo34/iggy/P6210036.jpg)

What i still need at least is a two stories house, two houses with some garden and a big temple.

[EDIT]0000 - build two additional simple buildings since i realized there are still 120x45cm to fill and you canīt have enough of them.
Going to bed now. :P

@aggro84 I watched a tutorial video once. They used spray paints to color the gaming surface and left over pink foam, which they painted grey as Line of sight blocker. They had am ugly, but playable gaming terrain in about 2hours or so. But it was the last sentence, they spoke in this video, which has been my terrainbuilding credo ever since: "Perfect is nice, but done is beautiful."
You can easily fill a complete table with the boxy buildings in a couple of hours once you have the measurements and start assembling them efficiently. When you have simple terrain for a complete table you can start taking your time and begin replacing them with something more elaborate. So go on, start building! ;)

Oh, look! A sun dial! :P Iīm running a little bit out of time, especially when doing things like this.

Here is the city gate. I donīt know, where i got the idea to put it in the corner like that, but it wasnīt mine. The small area will be the starting point.

The temple, step by step. It isnīt finished yet, since i had to make a sun dial! ::)

Will finish assembling the temple today and then have a look, if enough of the gaming surface is covered or if i need to make more.

[EDIT]I KNEW IT!!! Hardly have enough buildings to cover the area. :P Lucky me, i did make another one of each house this morning, but i still need 1-2 buildings or lots of small stuff, like the market stalls iīm planing to make.

A great looking town and a good selection of miniatures, fun games are only moments away!
DonVoss put his city gate on a corner (here: http://leadadventureforum.com/index.php?topic=33078.0) it's a good idea so I think I'll do the same when I get round to doing some more specific Conan scenery. So much to do, so little time...

Wow, iīm actually loosing weight because of this project.  :D

The black foam is impact sound protection(Trittschallschutz) for parquet. Itīs a house brand from a DIY market here in Germany.

@oldskoolrebel All the buildings do have floors, so there will be no further basing.

@Matakishi Ha! Thatīs the thread that started this madness! I was intriuged by DonVoss buildings and when i found your Crom rules there was no turning back in starting my own Conan project. So you and DonVoss are to blame! :P ;)

Today i have been in need for a change, so i started painting the last minitures. Took much longer than expected. Have done four heroes and civilians and have 13 warrior at the brink of finishedness. So all but one lone roman slave girl will be finished by sunday. Although all sche needs is here dress, so maybe... ::)

Necromancer from Kithai(Reaper), Aquilonian Soldier(Warlord Games), two Slaves(foundry) and a wild crocodile(unknown)

This is really coming together. If there is one thing I am lacking it's the ability to stay focused on things I find less interesting than others: e.g. constructing buildings etc. Your town is coming together beautifully and I am really impressed by what I can see. I'd be screaming after having done one of them...

I also like your miniatures. Great choice, nice painting. I hope you'll keep on posting pics of the games later...

Hum, I m pretty sure the wild crocodile is from the manufacturer kinder surprise.

Otherwise, I m really impressed by all the buildings you built, i can see it was a lot of work. The modular doors are also a very good idea.

Nice project.

I underestimated the time this project takes by far! Yesterday i worked till 5:30AM to cover the buildings with filler, made cards for the special abilities and events to happen during the day, etc. All for the game today. But the buildings are not yet finished and there are a lot of planned details like market booth or tables for the inn missing. It was raining the whole day, so we couldnīt have our barbecue. Simply said it all didnīt start well!   :P

BUT i made some Chilli instead, the friends brought some snacks and we had some nice pre game talk. Although i had lost against the characters the game had been great fun to everybody. We had a great discussion afterwards what to change ruleswise. So in the end everythings turned out fine and iīm really tired and will go to bed immediately. Everybody loved CROM!

Best quote: Player: "What kind of nerdy guy does it take to design a game, where whores give you back hit points?" Me: "Oh, that was my idea!" :D

The setup. The characters just entered the city. Due to a "Säuseln in den Sphären" no magic could be used that turn.
There is a guy with outstreched hands on the roof of the house in the back. It has been a miniture a player found laying around and didnīt know where to place. It was integrated into the game at once! :D
(http://i359.photobucket.com/albums/oo34/iggy/P6240050.jpg)

You didnīt have to roll, but it took an action die to take up those ladders and another action to place it. The roofs were well liked because the Minions had to get into the houses to get on the roofs.

Another roof shot. Every body is heading for the inn to get some wine, except for the guy with the halberd. He took on a group of slave traders. He used his special power "Mighty Whirlwind" to attack three foes at ones. After i determinated the number defending dice he used his second special power "Sneaky Attack" to adjut his attack pool accordingly. Everybody had two special powers they could use once in the game.

As a daytime event two apes appeared and were running rampage in the city.

Serpent Man sneeking into the city...

...while the characters were somewere else.

As a night time event a zombie riot started.

Pretty busy alley! Snake warriors, zombies and an old enemy for Aquilonia!

Conan, the Detective as he was called by the other players, killed the last two zombies with a ranged attack.

Weīll change the damage of ranged attack to a 1 + 1 for every 6 and iīll create "character classes" with some limitations to them since we think spell users are too flexible and therefore too powerful. So in the end you can choose a warrior, an archer or a spellcaster. The players and i think, that it will increase the need for group tactics. And in the next game the tavern will not give away wine for free!

Next: Into the jungle!

Looks like a good game and sounds like everyone had fun. Whores for healing/dice is a perfectly acceptable thing :) anything that bolsters a character's confidence restores/adds dice. The more things you can think of the better.

Well, as you can see i didnīt manage. ;)

Yesterday i got some painterīs knife at a Euro store so i wonīt have to use ice cream stick anymore. This week iīve been busy with our rpg group so i only have some half painted reinforcements for the ape group and some harpies.
This thread http://leadadventureforum.com/index.php?topic=10538.0 gave me the final idea how to build my jungle table. Iīll make two corner mountain pieces and a hill to be placed in the middle of the table. All three pieces will be conected by rope bridges. The two corner pieces will be able to be put together for a bigger area at the edge. And i will have a native village. Donīt know if it will be classical primitive huts or stilt huts.

I think iīll limit non archers to 4" reach and a max of 3 dice for ranged attacks.

That is not dead, which can eternal lie...

There is progress, but job, university und Infinity the Game all got in the way and slowed it down to a crawl. ;)

Hereīs some jungle pieces iīm working on. Adding some thin layers of styrofoam makes them more three-dimensional, opposed to the flat bases most people use.

All four of the apes are finished, which i managed last year, but have been to lazy to post a picture of. You can see, what the jungle pieces will look like once they are finished.

12 warriors from the Black Kingdoms. These warriors were a quick paint job. I didnīt spend any time on the eyes or teeth.
I will do another twelve with jungle bases. Iīm a little perfectionist when it comes to things like that.

Thanks for the encouraging comments. :) Today while watching "Ich bin ein Star – holt mich hier raus"( „I’m a Celebrity...Get Me Out of Here!“) i had a little test game of Songs of Blades and Heroes. Four fine young cannibals on one side and three great Apes on the other. Sadly my camera was overwhelmed by the darkness of the jungle. ;)

My new cannibals on the hunt for the great man ape. I will post better pictures soon.

It went really quick and after round 5 or 6 the cannibals killed the last ape nearly gruesome(11 to 4).

With some other projects going on, i think iīll be glad if iīll finish the oriental city and the jungle this year. For the jungle iīll definitly build an aztec type temple since i need that for Freebooterīs Fate, too. Next near iīll go for the nothern parts of Hyboria like Cimmeria, Nordheim or Hyperborea.

@Suber Donīt give me any stupid ideas!  :D

So, i need some help from the group creativity. I have three jungle markers so far, but might need up to three more. Currently iīm out of ideas.
Thereīs one with some rocks, which will get some scrubs, one with two head, a sacrifice from the cannibals and another one with a spear and horn as a hunting trophy.
I do want to make each one different and i want to make them more than just markers. They should be little scenery pieces on their own right, firering up the imagination.

So any suggestions? :D

A treasure could be attractive. Gems and so. Nothing refined, but rather raw looking.
The animal idea is also fine. Not only snakes, but swarms of ants or spiders could work too (giant bugs are always preferable, of course ;)).
As (no matter what I'm told) I cannot avoid giving stupid ideas ;D I'd look for a small Pterodactylus perching on the shield. What about some kind of spirit going around the shield or maybe an undead rising?

So, after the SoBH debacle* ;) itīs time to concentrate on the things, that are best in life ... play CROM and hear the lamentations of your loosing fellow gamers! :D

So finally i finished the five hero characters based for adventures in the shemite deserts and the Black Kingdoms:
Belit**(Rakham), Maku(Heartbreaker), Conan(Avatars of War), Subotai(L5R) and a yet to be named shemite warrior(Reaper)
(http://i359.photobucket.com/albums/oo34/iggy/P5120035_zpsbc167164.jpg) (http://s359.photobucket.com/user/iggy/media/P5120035_zpsbc167164.jpg.html)
Yes i know Subotai is from Hyrkania and not Kithai, but i could not yet find a better model.

So, next are some fine snakes. The Demoness is from Reaper, the snake amazons are from Excalibur Miniatures and are sold in a box of twelve. So i got another archer and six amazons bearing two short daggers.
(http://i359.photobucket.com/albums/oo34/iggy/P5120037_zpse4fbc580.jpg) (http://s359.photobucket.com/user/iggy/media/P5120037_zpse4fbc580.jpg.html)

*it hasnīt really been a debacle. SoBH is a fine game, you should give a try. Itīs just not our kind of game.

The new light bulb is supposed to be 'cool daylight', but i think itīs a little to blueish.

Thankīs for your kind words all, it makes the 'project' even more fun.  :)

@Belit As far as i can remember the only thing black about here was her hair, so you are right, but i like the contrast of the dark skin and the bright clothing and the only black conan charakter i know of is Zula from the horrible movie. What can i tell you, i find her as entertaining as dwarves in fantasy movies, so i took my artistic freedom here and this Belit has a dark skin tone. :D

@Marker This week i got some new miniatures and with it a bit with which iīll be finally able to finish my last marker. What you canīt see in the picture, the second from the left has some water effect at itīs base.

The blog version of CROM, two chapters from the companion and the campaign are translated into german and iīm allowed, once it is finished to put it up for download and you will be able to get it from Matakishiīs blog.
I need to take some more pictures and then i give it a nice layout CROM deserves.
Some text iīm still working on is "The Secrets of Steel" with all our optional rules for CROM, which will be integrated into the german edition and will see a PDF of one or two pages in english.
I guess i will have it all wrapped up by mid november.

Currently i started to work on miniatures and terrain to play the Conan and the Dark Citadel campaign.
I started by making a list of what i need and what i allready have.

For the first two scenarios i need a city. Mine is still not finished and since i got myself some new machines i will start all over again and build it completly new from wood. This weekend will see some progress on partially painted miniatures and then iīll work scenario by scenario.

[EDIT]You can find the campaign here: http://www.matakishi.com/cromcampaign1.htm
Does anybody now, where i can get those fishmen in Germany or online from UK?
Instead of the orc like creatures i will use cannibals from Northstar. Any recommendation for a fitting orge surregat? I was thinking of lions or jungle cats, but any suggestion is welcome.

Sorry for the delay in updates, but i have been a little busy. The translation is done! Now itīs time to take some more pictures and give it an nice layout.
Once everthing is wrapped up you can get the german version of Crom here for free: http://crom.nftu.de/ (http://crom.nftu.de/)* and at Matakishiīs Tea House.
Iīm currently working on a second campaign of the same scope as matakishis, but iīm not sure if it will be ready in time to get integrated into the rules PDF. So maybe it will be a PDF of itself some time later.

You will also find our changes and additions to the original rules, which will be integrated as text boxes into the german rule book, as a single PDF in english. If matakishi does not have time to do it, i havenīt asked him yet, i would like to have some native speaker to proof read my gibberish before layout.

*right now it is only a space holder.
