Having finally watched the new prequel and being just about to put on the Carpenter version later today I really must find time to move up the snowcat/snowvee models on the to-do list.....

Great and very promising start!! 8) I don't know if it's my phone that I'm trying to view this with, but I'd love to see some lighter photos, they seem a bit dark to me.

Have you seen this....

http://www.ct-scenery.com/ (http://www.ct-scenery.com/)

...I got to the site through a link by one of our other members, Thio-b. I don't know if it's his site or he's involved, but that station would be a perfect setting for those great minis!

Yes they are a bit dark, sorry about that, I have not had the time to put up my photoset in a while, will try to get better pics.

Freaky, those are really good sculpts. I especialy like the big guy.
Also is the new movie any good? I keep on skipping remakes as of late.

This project is off to a great start.

Great use of the Hasslfree Sludge Gulper piece.Nice conversions too.

Will be coming back to this project every day now.

Just sent another nine snow trooper pieces today.

Like the pieces with the Starship Troopers bugs being used.

The CT scenery station is an amazing piece.I would love to have a table set-up with pieces like that.

Sorry Commander no snowbases as they will be mostly inside and only occasionally outside. I prefer the utility of the clear bases.  ;)
I saw those pictures and have saved them for my references, sadly I am no way near that level of conversion talent.

Here are a few base maps that I will use as inspiration for the gameboard but I don't want to replicate the exact bases I think.
WARNING THESE MAPS CONTAIN SPOILERS! Mainly for the Carpenter film, bu also indirectly for the 2011 version.

Which rules should you use for the game ?
Title: Re: The start of a The Thing project.
Post by: Anpu on April 05, 2012, 01:19:32 PM
That is a good question...
I am not sure yet but I want to incorporate mechanisms for fear, trust/suspicion, infection etc.
The players will have control of one character each and can have a few followers that will be governed by the rules above.

I was thinking about the same game mechanics but the trust/suspicion is the hardest part unless may be you use specific gaming cards.

Have you read the free boardgame/cardgame rules or will you use something else ?

This project looks excellent, keep up the good work!

Re: the prequel, I thought it was a bit of a meh result. More a generic monsterfest rather than the oppresive, paranoia-laden original. Not terrible, just disappointingly mediocre.

I was thinking about the same game mechanics but the trust/suspicion is the hardest part unless may be you use specific gaming cards.

Have you read the free boardgame/cardgame rules or will you use something else ?
I was thinking about tokens for the trust/suspicion bit, Trust tokens earned by killing things, providing ammo or better weapons, using/giving first aid kits on/to followers.
Suspicion tokens are gained by being alone out of line of sight for a turn, fighting a thing in close combat, forcing cooperation from followers (followers with trust equal to or lower than suspicion won't always do what the player wants, but can be forced). Firing into closecombat. Taking their weapons, killing a follower out of combat if he is not a thing (because you think he is infected/about to turn).
Removing suspicionby taking actions that gives trust above max value. Remove all suspicion tokens by performing a blood test to show there is no infection.

Fear is gained by encountering things, entering frightening environs, and high suspicion towards allies. If fear reaches thresholds test courage to se if the follower snaps. If a follower freaks out he might be sick for a round, run away, fire his weapion wildly or commit suicide depending on how badly he snaps.
Removing fear by weapons and ammo spending a round in relatively safe environment, adrenalin shots, etc.
This is based on the fear trust system from The Thing computer game. I was thinking perhaps thre fear thresholds with more and more severe penalties to a freak out roll.

Please feel fre to help out with ideas etc, this is still very much a work in progress.

The Commander
The maps are a few years old at least, so they cover mainly the JC version. Indirectly as the 2011 is a prequel they might be a spoiler for that as well. I added a spoiler warning though as I do not want to ruin anyone's enjoyment of any of the films. :)

Cheers

Cheers,

Just watched it on DVD. The good bit is that as it's on DVD you can subtitle the Norwegian reserach team when their speaking in their native tongue and get the extra dialogue, (not sure if that was automatic in the cinema).

Liked the nod to Carpenter re-soundtrack. Film not bad, ish ;) Enjoyed the end titles segway too, really good and good lead in to The Thing (again).

Have a few ideas myself now, (curses!) They will resist and turn any potential thing thing into Halo flood infected.

Now where are my nid bits.... ;)

This might help mate:

http://thething.wikia.com/wiki/Helicopter (http://thething.wikia.com/wiki/Helicopter)

At least give you some better images. The callsign of the large chopper in the prequel was sea king, (so maybe it was one?) Not up on my helos these days.

For the Norwegian one I know it's something common like a Bell Jet Ranger but can't think for the life of me, possibly a 206 or 400 range.

Have to say some really good references for creatures here too, have a wander and see what you can find, just don't go alone and check those fillings! ;)

:) Feedback on ideas, new ideas etc is always a good idea.
Another idea would be that the players should draw an infection card at the begining of the game for their main character to see if one of them starts as a "thing". Infection markers could also be a source of infection cards, in tense situations like blood tests etc the cards are revealed, or something like that.
Many ideas loose ideas, but no concrete rules.
Painting terrain that can be used for both The thing and my fallout project at the moment, lots of barrels, first aid cabinets fire extinguishers, weapons lockers etc.

That's great; I was on the same project a few monthes ago...I took copplestone casting figures for artic workers (including "mac ready"). My "thing" come from urban mammoth creature (don't know the name"). My artic base is a copy of ct scenery. I will take photoes if you want to compare.
Just a question: the two troopers, are they "four A miniatures"?...Because I got the platoon of 12 soldier and it would be great if there are more...

For the submarine, all you need is the conning tower busting through the pack-ice. That should be a far easier (and smaller) build than an entire Ohio-class boomer!

Pardulon do some nice pieces too.

Fabulous thread, keep it up.

The water coolers are really nice.  The latest canine Thing on the other hand is definitely not, in a good way.  That matter coming out of its mouth makes me feel mildly queasy.

Your rules development for trust etc is an interesting idea.  The Battlestar Galactica boardgame might give you a few ideas.  One character secretly begins as a Cylon via similar mechanics to those as you described, with others subsequently realising that they are cylons.

The BSG rulebook is available as free download here (http://www.fantasyflightgames.com/edge_minisite_sec.asp?eidm=18&esem=4).  It might give you some inspiration perhaps.

Thanks for the comments everyone.  :)
@steders I'll try to make some WIP:s in the future... I am not very good at sculpting so I use a lot of parts from plastic kits and leftovers from other minis as well.
This is the original model for the female thing. Harwood Hobbies LC05 - Re-Animated Horror
(http://www.harwoodhobbies.com/USERIMAGES/RE-ANIMATED%20HORROR1.JPG)
First I carved away all the stitches. The mouth was added with greenstuff like a rim over the torso.
The teeth were cut-off teeth and spines from leftover chaos hounds used for the dog things, I just inserted them into the greenstuff rim and arranged them with a sculpting tool as I wanted it to look. The tendrils are greenstuff rollled into shape and then put together and left to set before trimming the base and gluing it into the mouth, for this one, after basecoats were applied. I also added a left arm cut from a GW corpsecart corpse left hanging by bits of greenstuff. To the right arm I added a row of teeth from a chaos hound and some greenstuff to cover the bandages the model had there, I left it a bit lumpy to simulate the mutating flesh of the thing.
Here are a few WIP things just after transformation after being discovered.
Parts for the first one GW imperial Guard, ghoul left arm, dryad right arm, tentacle arm for neck and maxmini head.
Here is a GW undead head and torso, dryad arms and mantic ghoul legs for some crouching menace, rising from the floor after being left for dead or something.
@Mason The arcade machines are from blackcat bases, pimped with some homemade transfers.

Strange behavior – The friendly model farthest from another model makes a full move as far as possible away from the other friendly models add one suspicion marker and activate nearest Thing. Test psyche?
Lights out – Power goes out in the building until generator restarted. LOS without light source is 6”.
Who goes there? - Roll on encounter table
1.   Survivor
2.   Crawler/spitter
3.   Remnant
4.   Dog
5.   Jumper
6.   Walker
There is something in here… - Roll on encounter table
1.   Crawler/spitter

More events:
I don’t trust any of you! – Random Follower lowers trust for the character by 3.
He’s one of them! – Random follower makes immediate freak out test.
Blizzard – Lasts until end of game or other weather card drawn. Character outside will have the following modifiers:
•   Speed -2
•   Los 6” or 8 with flashlight.
•   Add a Freezing token each turn instead of every other turn.
•   Any turn ended without contact with a safety line or within LOS of a building requires Int test or Random movement next turn.

High winds – Lasts until end of game or other weather card drawn. Character outside will have the following modifiers:
•   Add 2 Freezing tokens per turn.
Aurora Borealis – Lasts until end of game or other weather card drawn.
•   No radio transmissions can be made.

It’s Alive – Random (unburnt) corpse spawns a thing:
1.   Remnant
2.   Crawler/spitter
3.   Jumper

More Equipment:
Kerosene – Flammable, can be used to:
•   Set fire to things (and “Things”) or environment causes a medium sized fire.
•   Use with empty bottle and scraps of clothing to make Molotov cocktail, enough for 3.
Empty Bottle
Scraps of clothing
Small Fire extinguisher, 1 charge
Large Fire extinguisher 5 charges
Fuel barrel – Causes large fire.

I have a few more key terrain pieces on the way (Generator, fuel tanks etc.) Then I will start on the heroes and the survivors. The biggest challenge will be building the antartic research station though.

You absolutely have to! And the pre-sequel isn´t that bad either. I recommend to watch the newer movie first if you haven´t seen both yet, because it tells the story chronologically.

I missed this before Anpu, and I'm glad I've caught it now. It's utterly amazing, that 'game' that you played recently looked horrifying!! ... I may need to pass a die roll to watch any more updates :)

Do the things grow in size over time, like aliens after each kill? It looked like it did in the pictures - but that was probably just new spawns.

Cheers
Matt.

Thanks for the replies. The films are definetely worth watching. The size of this project is a bit daunting. There is not "only" painting the figures but making a minimum of one board with a research station, but also making all the cards and the rules.
The Things do not grow over time, just by absorbing mass. The game was not mine but a cooperation between Vikotnik and Zafarelli using my figures at a convention ( I was busy running a fallout game at the time.)

Encounter tables will be replaced by spawn cards I think.
Still having a bit of trouble with the rules but will do some mockup search, spawn and event cards and try out some of the more simple variants of the rules. I have some ideas that should work for the AI of the Things and keep the game a mainly optionally cooperative with no player controlling the Things on the board.
Spawn points will mainly be corpses and perhaps some set points on the board.
The different main characters will have different sets of objectives besides survival.

I still have to decide to keep it an -80s setting or go near future to scifi.

Sorry for the lengthy post without any eyecandy...

Whoa totally missed this project! Love it so much. Quite jealous!

Just want to give an opposite view on seeing the films. If you have never seen them the prequel copies the dramatic beats of the original so closely that it will spoil the impact of the original which is far superior and a genuine classic. Imagine how all of the great plot surprises of star wars are spoilt by watching the prequels first? That. Watching chronologically is more fun if you already have seen the original! Just my tuppence worth about one of my favourite films!

I agree completely. I forgot that fact, but it´s true. Better watch the old John Carpenter movie first, let it settle for a while and then watch the new movie followed again by the old one!

Yes knowing myself I will most likely do both....
The biggest issue I have is time, the other is space. (in space no one can hear you hoarding minis...) Nowhere to store it all....
Much of my time gets consumed by a five year old girl, my daughter and the light of my life, with autism (most likely the high functioning kind).
Hopefully I will finish this project before too long with the time I have for it.

That would most likely be the best approach!  :D
