Title: My War of the Ring boardgame painting challenge- finished p2
Post by: Barks on April 07, 2012, 11:29:17 AM
I'm going to try to paint all 205 figures before the end of the month- I'm away for a few days, so it's well over 10 figures a day. I'll be using the dip for the first time and learning as I go!

Day 1- Prepping...

I'll post updates on this thread, with full gory details on my blog, Wargaming with Barks (http://wargamingwithbarks.blogspot.com.au/2012/04/war-of-ring-diary-day-1-prepping.html).

Heckle me as I struggle, it'll be fun!

Good luck mate, the game deserves it! One of my all time favourites. I tried to paint my set, got the mordor forces (including Nazgul) done and then I stalled. =)

Yeah, I'm going to try and stay disciplined- hence these posts...

Today's post- more prepping in preparation for spray.

Good luck with the project. I have the game at home but have been too lazy to try anything like painting the miniatures. So far your minis look great.

If it weren´t for two other projects and a whole lot of other things taking too much time, i would join in with my Conan - Age of War boardgame to make this a real challenge. :D

Good luck!

I've been toying with the idea of getting Battles of Westeros, which would be a worthy edition to the challenge. Maybe Anatoli can paint his set up  ;)

Today- trial of the dip- triumph and disaster!

I'd appreciate experienced dippers' advice...

Meanwhile, thanks for the support- and good luck to anyone else who's going to paint up a boardgame set!

I'd appreciate experienced dippers' advice...

Make sure your basecoats are very bright, since the dip darkens everything. A white primer is usually better than black for this.

About a minute after you slather it on, wick some of the dip off with an old brush, leaving just enough for it to settle in the  crevices of the model.

If you want to pretty it up later, wait until the dip is completely dry (at least 24 hrs), hit it with a light spray of matte varnish, and then go back and do some simple highlighting using the original base colours. (The matte varnish will give the highlight paint a surface to grip onto.)

Use brown tone dip for models that are primarily brown, red, yellow, orange, gold, etc: warm colours. Use a black dip  for models that are primarily blue, silver, green: cool colours (the brown dip just makes them look drab or filthy).

Happy dipping!

Thin the dip with alcohol. It'll help keep the dip from getting super goopy, and actually turn it into more of a shade.

That's a good idea about the black stain for 'cool' colours. I'm already painting light colours on a non-black undercoat. They're water-based stains that I'm brushing on.

I've carried on with my effort, and completed my orcs with the Chocolate Brown dip.

I've also punched onto the Easterlings with a warmer Walnut dip, which isn't so intense.

I've painted up a few of the minis for various boardgames and it's been well worth the effort ... this however is mammoth. Looking good so far, good luck!

Wow those Easterlings especially look excellent! Keep it up sir, as long as you can, and the rest of us will look on in amazement and growing envy!

"Walnut dip"?  That's a dangerous name!  Take care that no-one tries to find out what it tastes like on a little pitta bread ...

Today I had a painting frenzy; not only did I finish Isengard but I pushed onto the Ringwraiths and characters! Now I've finished all the Shadow forces.

Wow, man, you're really pushing forward. The minis look really good so far, and with the shadow forces done you have already finished most of the troops. Well done!

Rohan rocks. Probably the best miniatures yet. That's not to say the others didn't work out but I think Rohan is even better than the others. Keep on dipping, sir.

You're doing a really good job. Have thought about doing this is well, but always seemed to not be worth the effort. Might need to reconsider after seeing this.

You've set a cracking pace! I agree with the previous comment - Rohan looks fantastic.

It's going to be excellent when you've got all these minis done. This game cries out for painted playing pieces  - it's an ocean of plastic straight out of the box.

Yeah, I've been off work... and I want to get them done before I restart... and I'm almost there!

Today I got into the dwarves, then in a fit of I-just-want-to-get-this-done I launched into the Fellowship. Hopefully, it will all be done in 24h.

Lords of Middle Earth? What's that...

I've got the first edition, plus the old expansion. Are you telling me there's more? There seem to be a bit of the old expansion in the Lords kit?

Fine job though... I have painted my orks, some of the uruks and the ring wraiths. The rest are sadly unpainted.
