Title: Pekinese Japanese. Sailors added 14th April
Post by: Svennn on April 07, 2012, 06:12:00 PM
Being fortunate enough to get my hands on some of these Oshiro? from JimBibbly already I dived in and slapped some paint on one. Instead of using my tried and trusted paints I decided to nip out to the FLGS yesterday and treated myself to some new Vallejo especially for these. Chosen base colour dried very shiny (possibly because it was Gamecolour?) and he nearly went out the window to be quickly followed by the paint bottle. Second attempt was much better and came out nice and flat - hoorah, only for the third to also be shiny AAAAAAARRRRRRGHHHH >:(. Anyway, I persevered and then hit him with some flat varnish.

Very good dark blue.

My thinking is that a lot of the time folks paint dark blue uniforms far too light, as they are trying to have some highlights and go too far, or they start too light in the first place. But you've cracked it.

I'll echo Plynkes' thoughts re the difficulty of rendering a truly good result of dark blue. Very good job indeed.

Excellent job, Svennn!

Though my Japanese from Jimbo won't look like that, and probably won't be Japanese either...  o_o

Wot the others said   :)

Which Vallejo colour combo did you use for the blue if it isn't indiscreet ?

Arthur

The unsuccessful starting point was I think Game Colour Storm Blue, great colour but dried as shiny as a shiny thing :'(
Mid coat was Model Colour Dark Prussian Blue and I topped it all off with Model Colour Prussian Blue. I did shade with a mix of the mid and Paynes Grey (I use artist watercolour from a tube) but it was as simple as that.

I did a sailor from the same release this morning by just using the two Prussian Blues (and the Paynes) and it came out fine.

I hope it was the petty officers as the normal 'ratings' wore white.

Nope :D  I did check before hand but as I am very unlikely to build a 1/56th Mikasa anytime soon I went with a more fanciful combination of the two ;D  Its also why I didn't post a pick ;)
