Post by: smirnoff on April 17, 2012, 10:23:35 PM
Mostly Matchbox Models of Yesteryear conversions for BoB.

Great stuff  :-*

Are some of these a bit whimsical or was it a case of 'find something that moves and put plates on it' so historically anything goes?

cheers

Nicely done.  I really like the car with all the stowage.  Looks "lived in."

Very cool.
Have you played a game yet?
What rules did or do you plan to use?

The vechs are jerry built as that fits in with the two forces they will be fielded for; the League is happily elastic on accuracy where the Back of Beyond is concerned.
All the Mack lorries have two lift out crews and weapons, one for a polyglot White Russian force (currently in China) and one for a low life Belgian criminal in Congo/East Africa.
If you look towards the bus there is a pure fantasy version of the Sdkfz 251/16 built on a Mack Truck body.
That is fine in our games; it is useless, having a range of 6" and, in all probability, likely to explode if someone sneezes on it but hey...
Rules for the league are 'Setting The East Ablaze'. Rules for the lads down my way are an edited and amended version of the same.
Yes, played 2 versions of the same game over the past two weeks at El Teb in Morocco; essentially a race to find gold between the FFL and Stroganoff's Criminal Organisation. Included Rastafarians, a French Bomber, a number of the Whacky Races Motor Pool...oh how we laughed......

Impressive motor force here!
Cracking job.

I would like to ask some details of  more technical matter on this force, i.e. which models are used for the basis of this force and which figures are used for drivers and gunners.

BTW Just saw on TMP:
 http://theminiaturespage.com/news/?id=1937738584
"setting the east ablaze" rules released!

Big trucks are Macks; there are a couple of Renaults, a Crossley and I think a Model T or two as well.
The bus is the Corgi Thornycroft in general livery.
The open topped car is a Daimler (inspiration from a similar one done by a bloke on Steve Dean's site a while ago).
Drivers...there is only 1 (I need some more) and this was an unidentified WW1 figure with a cast on steering wheel I had in the bits box. I am on the hunt for more figures to convert; all help gratefully accepted here....
Crew....various; Woodbine French converted, Foundry Darkest Africa converted, the jerrybuilt Flammwagon uses Artizan Sky Pirates with weapons chopped out, the triple A Crossley bloke is a Brigade Lewis Gunner number 2 converted, there are other various Artizan Thrilling tales figures that went on as is or were converted, the Sloppy Jalopy chauffeur drives the Daimler, the heavy mortar crew is Copplestone Chinese with new heads and shoulder boards, the lorry mounted field gun is a Copplestone Brit Officers with a new head and scratch built white Russian cap, his number 2 is, I think, a Renegade WW1 Chasseur heavy mucked about with, the blokes on the bus are Copplestone conversions.
The heavy AA gun is scratch built on a Pulp 37mm, the lorry field gun is Eureka, the Flammwagen flame projectors are scratch built.
Vickers AA and straight Vickers are Pulp and Company B and any other guns are Pulp.
Stowage is Historex British WW2 and German WW2 with added bits from the Tamiya Oil Drum set as well as some scratch built stuff.
Hope that helps......

Oh what a thesaurus of inspiration and details:

For crew etc, my humble suggestion:
Company B has some interwar vehicles and few crew figures:
 http://homepage.mac.com/brentdietrich/companyB_models_interwar.html
Sloppy jalopy has a driver in working "uniform":
http://www.sloppyjalopy.com/
[select :figures"]
and I think that brigade games has Ford T driver in three versions suitable for bolsheviks, whites etc.
Alas, I cannot find the link, so, maybe are now OOP?

and here some german driver and a passenger that might be handy:
http://www.brigadegames.com/Kubelwagon-Crew-Officer-driver-frauline-Mimi_p_947.html

Since I do not own any of them, I cannot recommend anything about suitability, size and fitting
As for conversion, I think that some WWII figures might also be used but suitably converted. Another humble suggestion add a couple of motorcycle despatch riders from GWM. they will enhance the absolute amazing icon.

And here it is (well you did ask).
Might as well apologise if anyone gets offended right now then:

The Rohypnol Posse was fully formed at the Battle of Kabolo last time the League was in Africa.
Stroganoff and his merry (?) band were holed up in the compound whose electrified fences had singularly failed to stop the zombie horde assaulting Strog and his lads. Mainly because the zombies came out of the river, totally avoiding the fences (thanks Umpire) swarmed onto and over the SS Nostromo, (turning Captain Haddock into a zombie in the process) and on into the compound…but I digress.
By the time the zombies were dealt with a free for all was going on across the river involving Austrians, Belgian Police, Reds and a massive assault by Stroganoff’s stanch ally Von Stauffenberg, who had turned up with the Flying Circus and gobs of heavy ordnance.
As all hell broke loose over the river someone decided that they needed to turn the railway swing bridge, to allow passage out of the cauldron of death where Von S and his Krauts were pouring death down on all and sundry, and make an opposed crossing into Strog’s compound.
The wheelhouse controlling the swing bridge was on Strog's side of the river and was held by Strog’s Pygmies with their trusty blowpipes.
So who gets sent across the river to take control of the bridge?
Sister Julie Andrews (with LMG) in a rowboat.
Now I (Stroganoff) had been imbibing during the game with my good friend Texas Ted (who was not commanding troops in that game) and we cooked up a plan that involved the use of Rohypnol on the blowpipe darts.
Sister Julie was peppered; the boast drifted to the wheelhouse; the pygmies (lead by a very excited Stumpy[see below]) dragged her into the boathouse and attempted an unusual and rigorous form of resuscitation (all 10 of them).
The Rohypnol Posse was born.
They have three notches on their blowpipes to date:
1)   Sister Julie (who has now joined them and is known as ‘Me Julie’)
2)   In Zanzibar they got a hold of Flashy’s pilot Pussy Galore after she got shot down
3)   The other is the cowgirl Sharon Stone from "The quick and the dead" game; to be fair we think Sharon Stone did the posse rather than the other way round.
Still to be done: Red Army Babes rarely on the table.
Corbett claims they are a myth while Trazzer says he seen them once (see below for characters).

The Posse is a mercenary unit for hire that will trek all over the globe in search of quality Beaver. This following description (from the pen of Texas Ted) is yet to be sanctioned by the League:

The unit are able travel to various countries under cover, posing as a singing group, “Me Julie, the Singing Nun, and the Von Claptrap Children”.
While in this guise they raise money for the catholic charity the “Holy Children’s Fund” (the name of this fund has been changed to protect the innocent).
They travel on Vatican passports that gives them and, more importantly, their luggage diplomatic immunity.

The unit is made up of 12 figures, 11 pygmies and one female; Sister Julie Andrews ('Me Julie') for extra fire support.
Some of the pygmies have special rules.

Corbett, pronounced Korbett; is the unit CinC and not a pygmy to be messed with. He is the only one who can keep everybody in line, acts as a +2 Leader and talks like Ray Winston.

“The Proff”, 2iC, and the brains of the outfit. Son of the local Witch Doctor he won a missionary scholarship to study chemistry at the University of Regensburg, unfortunately however was expelled just before graduation after an incident in the Female hall of residency. He only refers to it as the racist incident, and claims he was wholly innocent and was in fact set up, by right wing Aryan students. The fallout from the incident has led to the Proff having a pathological hatred of Von Stauffenburg. The reason for this was because of Von Stauffenburg’s role in the disciplinary hearings that occurred after the incident. Due to his role as a head of a department of Archaeology, at the University he found himself having to chair the disciplinary board in the chancellor’s absence at the last minute, and where he passed a sentence of expulsion without graduation on the Proff. The reason for the chancellor’s absence at the meeting has never been fully explained but the Bavarian scandal sheets of the time, refer to an incident at the university where the chancellor and the rest of the board where found wandering naked on the campus roof tops talking about giant toadstools, and the Obrigwabibikwa. The incident was hushed up and blamed on the French chef getting his mushroom mixed up.

The Proff is vital to the pygmies as he uses a combination of modern chemistry and jungle lore, to brew all the units’ potions and lotions.

“Dec” nickname “Strangely Tall” This pygmy is the half brother of the famous Harry Flashman after an incident involving Bishop Flashman’s father when he chaired the first African Anglican Church Grand Assembly in Belgian Congo. It is believed his father succumbed to the charms of Dec’s Mother “Big Maggie O” who was performing in the pygmy mission church choir at the time. Dec also has a sister in the unit called “Big Bertha”.

Pam- Lezza

Trazzer- Or Traz to his mates, Trazzer lives in a drug-induced haze and therefore never has to test morale, he never sees reality. For example a heavy artillery barrage to him is merely pretty colours everywhere.

Stumpy- Stumpy and his best pal Floony are a literally a couple of petrol heads and joy riders; they are fascinated by all things mechanical especially cars and aeroplanes. They form a driving combination with Stumpy working the pedals and Floony steering, they seem to possess an uncanny telepathy when driving.  If either figure passes within 12inches of a motorised vehicle that is not moving on a dice throw of a 1 or 2 on a D6 they will attempt to steal it. If in the unlikely event they come across an aircraft they will automatically attempt to steal it and fly it away.

Floony- see above

Big Bertha, Bertha is a man-eater just like her mother. Her speciality is the double top, a double dipped dart combination of date rape drug and Viagra. Bertha is always on the lookout for male victims, she especially has a particular fondness for those hairy Scotsman. Her other role in the unit is the heavy weapons expert. She possesses a steel blowpipe; a converted car exhaust, and is capable of blowing a small grenade the size of an egg the full six inches. Like her mother she would like to get hold of a Flashman.

Saucy Jack- (He’s a naughty one) Saucy Jack Shipman is a depraved psychopath, murdering rapist and the unit sniper. He was the adopted son of the missionary medic Dr Shipman, and he adored his depraved adopted dad. Jack is a loner and is only scared of Corbett and Big Bertha, “ If only he could be allowed ten minutes on his own with sister Maria”. However he can fire his blow pipe 8 inches and is classed as a sniper, he is able to do this by using a gas canister the same gas he uses to knock out his victims. The gas gives him 8 shots before he reverts back to normal range. Unlike normal snipers Jack is not eliminated on contact but fights melee at +1 due to his vicious claw ball hammer he carries.

Special rule, at the start of the battle, roll D6 on anything but a 1 Jack moves and responds as normal. However if a 1 is rolled it means that Jack has managed to avoid the chemical cosh today that the Prof uses on him to keep him in line. If this is the case then Jack will stalk the battlefield attacking any female figures that cross his path ignoring any other orders to pursue this.

Sister Julie/’Me Julie’- Split personality nun at one moment the happy singing nun the next a gun toting maniac armed with an LMG (needs no further explanation)……

It needs a driver who will be one of Stroganoff’s band or a Nun if I can convert something.

Oddly I am normally wasted when I play BoB...

You don't say.  ;D

More glorious lunacy, and I have serious motor pool envy.

My favourite has to be the Daimler touring car festooned with baggage. I've got one of the RAFM touring cars that has been basically painted but unfinished for over a year now, must get it properly baggaged  up, so to speak!

Smirnoff,
Even though I am a dedicated reader of the Kashgar Pink I was completely unaware of this "glorious lunacy" (props to Wirelizard).  This only confirms my total admiration for everything that the League does :o :o ;D :D ;D.  Thank you so much for the low down on these crazies!!

Reiver do some drivers in SD caps, I think in their VBCW range (recent post on LAF WW1 section). Also I saw a Minerva crew with a driver in a French helmet.

Also; http://leadadventureforum.com/index.php?topic=40762.0

Well, I thought going with a blues theme would be good because running into this crew would certainly give you the blues.  For the bare headed fellow, who hasn't yet earned his uniform cap I suggest Heckhound because it just sounds a lot less ominous than "hellhound on my trail".  For the other fellow I like Sleepy John, named for his carelessness in handling his equipment  ;D.

I don't need or want the prize here, but I'll toss in a guess anyway.

Scads - A keen-eyed scout, whose main failing is an abiding distraction by shiny obects.
Possible combat bonus: + To range/movement speed/difficulty to hit in cover
Possible combat penalties: Will sometimes lag behind battle to nick boots, teeth, flowerpots, parasols, grandfather clocks, or anything else he happens to fancy at that particular moment.

Ronson (or Nutter Ronson) - A fine fighter with a terrible weakness for dares and bets. Cannot abide being called a coward and will do what it takes to prove the challenger wrong.
Possible combat bonus: An all around moderate boost to his stats, to allow him some chance of surviving his penalty below. Perhaps it only kicks in when he is "challenged".
Possible combat penalties: Will accept any challenges and bets made by his fellow pygmies, other teammates, and even enemies who get close enough, to do particularly outlandish or dangerous things, such as dashing to a particular point under fire, stealing the enemy's vital supply of tea biscuits, or tweaking an opposing general's mustache. If a figure is within (2 inches? 3 inches? 4?) they may challenge Ronson to do something nuts so long as that challenge is not a guaranteed death sentence. Only one challenge at a time, please!

Herr Stroganoff,

“The Proff”

Greetings my friend.

I have just finished reading your latest transmission with mixed emotions.

It rekindles memories of one of the darkest periods of my life – I had just received my Doctorate from Berlin when I was approached by the Dean at Ragensburg with an offer to take up the post of Head of Archaeology (recently vacated when Prof. Von Dadelson went missing). On the face of it, an excellent opportunity which I readily accepted.

The University of Regensburg was a dark forbidding place, on the day of my arrival they had released the hounds to track down a missing student who had been complaining about his lodgings. It soon became clear that all was not well at this establishment. The Faculty were extreme reactionaries to a man, prone to outbursts of rage, and worse, at the least provocation - not at all what you would expect from a seat of learning. Rumours abounded of missing students and strange goings-on.

The University had extensive links with missionary centres throughout the world, many of which were partially funded by the University, many of whom sent their brightest converts to the University here at Regensburg. Strangely the missionary students were kept apart from the others when not at classes and did not participate in many of the after lecture activities, other than “hunt the student”, where they appeared to provide the “hare”.

It was at one such “hunt the student” event that I first came across “The Proff”(real name Angus Ajibodi, first name from his Scottish Missionary mother’s family, surname from his father the Witch Doctor).

As Angus was a Chemistry student our paths had never before crossed, he seemed an affable student with a razor sharp mind.  Demonstrated to the amazement and rage of the Faculty when Angus was back in the dorm within 30 minutes of the hunt beginning, whilst the hounds and senior boys did not return for a further 12 hours. Angus had put his skills to good use and laced his tracks with an unknown compound of his own design resulting in the senior boys being dragged all over the country for the next 12 hours by the dogs. Sadly this marked Angus for special attention resulting shortly thereafter in his being dragged before the Disciplinary Diet on charges of the utmost severity.

The Diet was convened, consisting of 4 members and the Chair, with me being drafted in at the eleventh hour to Chair on the final day when the Dean was “called away” unexpectedly. On the face of it the evidence was damning, albeit very one sided. The final day of the hearing consisted of poor Angus chained to his highchair whilst the charges were read out and each member of the Diet pronouncing their judgement, as four Heads of Department pronounced him “Guilty” there was no need for me to use the Chair’s casting vote, only the sentence remained to be pronounced. Angus was dragged from the room, still chained in his highchair whilst sentencing was discussed. You can imagine my horror when suggestions such as “bury him alive”, “flog him to death”, “set the dogs on him”, etc. were suggested. Angus was dragged back into the room and as Chair it fell to me to pass sentence – Angus was advised that he would be expelled immediately, never to return to the University. Angus left the next morning before the return of the Dean whilst arguments raged amongst the Faculty about the leniency of the sentence.
Needless to say, upon the Dean’s return I was censured for my actions and promptly resigned. Shortly thereafter the events at the University reached the broadsheets and the entire Faculty was removed. The University now enjoys an unparalleled reputation for excellence.

Finally, I am pleased to see that “The Proff” (Angus Ajibodi) is very much alive and well.
I would like to offer young Angus, albeit somewhat belatedly, an Honorary Degree in Chemistry from the University of Dar es Salaam as some measure of recompense for his interrupted education .

Your friend,

Von Stauffenberg

PS Vehicles are fantastic!!!!!!!!!!

Von S
Your customary gentlemanly words will be passed on to 'The Proff' (although we will have to draw them for him as usual).
I am sure that, should he receive a nice certificate to frame and hang on the wall of the 'Mud Hut Dispensary and Abattoir' that all will be well.
It will sit nicely next to the ones he has from Stroganoff Enterprises (Dodgy Degrees Division) where he has achieved
high honours in Astro Physics, Dressmaking and Deportment.
Sadly even he failed in the attempt to get the Doctorate in Personal Hygiene (even Stroganoff Enterprises have some standards) so the wall space is available.
Thank your for your kind words on the vechs; there is 1 more in the spray shop...

Last one for now; this is a 1912 Simplex Double Roadster tooled up.
Driver is a Reiver figure with a Woodbine head. May change this as I have some Empress drivers on order and really need a White Russian driver.
Bloke riding shotgun is a Foundry Mutiny figure; officer in the back is a Company B German Officer just painted to pass as a White Russian. Bang sticks from Pulp. So thanks to all for figure suggestions and kind comments.

Just now I saw a conversion in GWP for a motorcycle:
http://gwargamesp.18.forumer.com/index.php?showtopic=7719
you might be interesting.

I would also like to draw your attention to the tradition of london various ranges with some drivers which might be useful:
Edwardian motoring figures
http://traditionoflondonshop.com/index.php?cPath=256_280
and Clive Nights WW1 car passengers:
http://traditionoflondonshop.com/index.php?cPath=308_325
british french and austrogermans.
Of course needs to be seen first because the photos in their website is not very well.

That motorbike and sidecar is a great find. I will have a look and see if I can get my hands on one.
I have seen the tradition stuff in the flesh; if they are the same models I saw the level of sculpt detail will not stand up to Artizan/Foundry/Copplestone etc but thanks for the suggestion.

Uncle Fingers

and
