Don't know if this is the right board for it: move it, if it fits better in any other place... :)
I have started a new project around some renaissance-condotta-idea. But after some research I had to realise that I wasn't too interested in the real thing. All this different cities with their bunch of condottierie and under-condottierie: too much stuff for me...
Then all of a sudden I had this mad idea of mixing in some wiered stuff and do a kind of comic-renaissance... :D
So here as a start is my florentine warband:
And to pimp things up a bit, they get a little da-vinci-like tank... ;)
Pulled or better pushed by a horse...

Cheers,
DV

Nice warband and the tanks is great. :-*
What a fun idea! :)
-
Wow! really like all this! =) The perrys are always the best =)
-
Great pics love that back drop :-*
-
:-* :-* :-* :-*
tell us about the miniatures, where from?
-
Very nice! :o
-
What fun! And lovely painting to boot.
Do you have any thoughts about what rules you'll play this out using?
-
Cool idea.
Lots of places to go with this.
By the way, how much horse power does the tank have? :D
-
Now that is very clever and very stylish
-
Looks great.
I love your choice of scenic backdrop too!
-
Like it!
-
Very nice indeed :-* :-* :-*
I love the whimsical tanket 8)
The back drop is very good also!
Is the St Christopher on the pavaise a magazine cut out?
cheers
James
-
Thanx for the nice comments and I am glad you like the idea... :)
@traveller
The miniatures are so far from the perrys. WotR and mercenaries boxes: I love the miniatures. I did use 2 lowered pikes from warlord to bring a little bit more action to the figures.
@Mr. Rab & Rules
I will use "This very Ground". Sounds funny at first, but I did use them befor for viking skirmish, so I think they will work for this setting quite well. The warbands have to be somewhere around 20 miniatures plus 1 or 2 special/wierd things.
I intend to play mostly multiplayer with these as a kind of presentation game. So its important to have some fast and easy rules... ;)
@backdrop and pavaise
I just search for a few moments in the net and printed them in colour.
Btw St. Christopher is the saint of the city of florence... :)
Cheers,
DV
-
Great, thanks!
I have shunned those plastic ones but you are tempting me....
-
:-* Cracking idea !!
The tank..what make is it?
-
That's what I like to see, the Renaissance as it should have been. What's next? Da Vinci Air Assault? lol
-
@paul
It's scratchbuild: balsawood over a core of styrofoam. Plus a perry horse and a victrix-cannon.
What's next? Da Vinci Air Assault?
erm, yes... :D
Finished the florentinians today. Need more pavaises though... o_o
So a few squads, a tank and a birdman (old GW).

@traveller
If our are not fully convinced by my work, have a look at the masterpieces capt. blood is making of these miniatures... :o
Cheers,
DV
-
This is such a cool idea! And really well executed!
-
I like em! :D
What city will you be dong next?
-
Fantastic Stuff :-*
-
@paul
It's scratchbuild: balsawood over a core of styrofoam. Plus a perry horse and a victrix-cannon.
It looks so good I wasn´t sure wether it was a kit. Excellent scratch build :) :)
-
Wow, really nice! Even if you did ruin it with the fantasy bit. ;D I have still only painted four of mine.
-
There used to be a set of rules called "Leonardo Plus" that covered Renaissance wargames with Leonardo Da Vinci's inventions. Long out of print, I suppose.
-
Wow! The whole group looks really great together! :-*
Very nice work!
-
Very nice !!!!
-
Excellent body of work 8)

There used to be a set of rules called "Leonardo Plus" that covered Renaissance wargames with Leonardo Da Vinci's inventions. Long out of print, I suppose.
Written by Gary Leitzel, an old gaming friend of mine and current mayor of Dayton, Ohio! He sold the game including the rights to the rules to a fellow who still occasionally runs them at conventions so it might be possible to get a copy if you hunt around.

I am more than convinced! :-* :-* :-*
-
Thanx for all the very encorouging comments... :)
Perhaps I should have made it clear from the start, that this is not a daVinci-War-Project, for me. The wierd aspect will have all sort of things: magic, monsters and regilious things...
So don't be too disapointed, if there are not too many daVinci things in the pipeline... ;)
Okay, on to the next city-state: Siena. Old enemy of Florence and the Medici.
I love their limited colour sheme... :o
Lots of things to do, but you get the idea.
So far: 6 pike, 6 billmen, 4 bow, il capitano and the big bodyguard of il Capitano, Brucinus, the Orco of Siena. A nightmarish creature from the appenine mountains...
And a small mortar (sill without crew). Scratchbuild with an old megaminiatures table and a GW-mortar barrel.
Brucinus. An old foundry orc wich lay in my leadmountain for over ten years, so I am very happy he is finally painted...
Cheers,
DV
-
I love that orc! :-*
He looks fantastic!
Personally, I'm really bored with the typical green skin orcs and goblins.
-
Very good !!!
I Will follow this project with greate interest !
Best regards Michael
-
I really like the way this is going 8)
How many states are you planning on?
cheers
James
-
Glad you like the orcish idea... :)
How many states are you planning on?
I am initially going for 4 city-states, but am planning a big multiplayer with 6 factions. Though the last 2 factions would perhaps not be states... o_o
Cheers,
DV
-
This is cracking. Some great ideas and execution here!!

Cant wait to see your ideas come to life.
-
The Sienea faction is stunning, especially l'Orco! You did a great job on the black, too. Is there a handy book or website for Italian town liveries of this era?
-
The idea is brilliant... and the miniatures look awesome!
-
Wonderful use of the perry minis, again the black-white scheme is great!
-
:-* :-* :-* :-*
This is turning my crank so much it's in danger of falling off!
;D
-
:-* :-* :-*
I´m in love with this project! The minis are awesome, I specially like the (horse-powered) tank! The paintjob is also very cool, I like the colors a lot :o
-
Tis is also something I've been dreaming of:
http://baronvonj.blogspot.com/2008/01/leonardo-tech.html
-
what range is the steam tank from?
-
@all: thanx for your comments, gents... :)
@Tank
As stated before its scratchbuild from balsawood over a core of styrofoam. Just a quick build... ;)
@BaronVonJ
Your round daVinci-tank looks great... :-*
Is there a handy book or website for Italian town liveries of this era?
Not that I found one. I rely mostly on wikipedia, google and the back of the perry-box... :D
Okay, todays update is not a city state, but a faction wich no renaissance in italy-thing can go without: the swiss.
I am going for each of the trooptypes being from a different canton. And in the end I can add them to every city state I like as mercenaries or build a faction of their own.
The pikes are from Uri, the billmen from Lucerne and the "Alpen-Peter" from the matterhorn... :D
(http://i928.photobucket.com/albums/ad126/DonVoss_photos/Renais/SW1.jpg)
The Alpen-Peter is an old mithril Lord of the Rings miniature wich lay in my leadmountain for almost 14 years. Again glad to have found a use for him at last.
The standardbearer of the billmen is from mirliton, by the way...
I know I should have finished Siena first, but I am in love with all the different colour schemes of the cantons and their flaggs... :-*
Cheers,
DV
-
Lovely :-* The Swiss match the standard of the other factions,,,Fantastic.
Love Alpen Peter too. Maybe the Uri men should have a minotaur to match their Flag?
-
Vary inspiering. And I think the minotaur ideas sounds great! :D
-
The mino-idea is great and absolutely in the right spirit... :D
Wonder if its too greek...
DV
-
How about a clockwork bronze bull?
-
a clockwork bronze bull?
The swiss (erm me) don't have one...:)
Thou its a tempting idea too.
DV
-
I love the little fantastical twists to these units, and the paint work is superb!
-
The swiss (erm me) don't have one...:)
Thou its a tempting idea too.
DV
Hmm..maybe just a clockwork cart with scythe blades on the front reminiscent of a bull's head then?
-
I think I will go for a small minotaur (a champion for the unit) and a daVinci-like twinncannon... :)
Here an unpainted preview, a new thing quite popular at the moment I think... lol
(http://i928.photobucket.com/albums/ad126/DonVoss_photos/SW2.jpg)
DV
-
Nice cannon. Is it from a kit?
-
The "shield" is from the Zvezda siege-kit, the cannons are from victrix. The rest is scratchbuild from plasticcard.
Perhaps one can see it best from the back of the cannon.
DV... :)
-
That is a very nice construction.
Yes, work in progress models are very in vogue you know ;)
-

Thats certanly true, with +1200 klicks for a thread without any paint... lol lol lol
Okay, than I should perhaps not be too shy and show my WIP-Carroccio... :D

lol
And that Caroccio looks good! For which city-state will it belong?
-
Lovely thread, DV!
-
Thanx, Admiral... ;)
For which city-state will it belong?
erm, its for the papal state... :o
(http://i928.photobucket.com/albums/ad126/DonVoss_photos/Renais/P3.jpg)
So the army of the pope will be the 4th faction.
I know the caraccio was probably not used by the papal state, so count it for the wierd stuff...;)
Cheers,
DV
-
Thouse are some nice papal bulls. :D
So I guess the Pope will have strange magical/god given powers then. Maby even have an angel or to.
I forget, what rules are you useing agine?
-
Here an unpainted preview, a new thing quite popular at the moment I think... lol
It was only a matter of time before the 'unpainted figure' gamers had a wider influence. :D
I'm quite enjoying all this btw. :)
-
Nice thread! Wonderful painting and modelling, rather inspiring :D
-
You certainly are cranking these out at a great rate 8)
Love the caraccio :-*
cheers
James
-
Stunning caraccio.
Hand painted icon?
Best regards Michael
-
This is all really nice stuff and a great subject.
-
I know the caraccio was probably not used by the papal state, so count it for the wierd stuff...;)

Well, not until the Vampire of Venice attacked them, anyway. Did you really paint this up so beautifully in such a short time? I am beginning to suspect you have a supernatural element yourself!
-
Well, not until the Vampire of Venice attacked them...
Yesss!... :)
Did you really paint this up so beautifully in such a short time?
No. It took me 6 hours yesterday evening to paint up the caroccio and the shileds with the papal signs. The picture of holy mary is a print again, of course... ;)
The oxen were already painted to a good degree.
So I would say, it was quite a long time...
So I guess the Pope will have strange magical/god given powers then. Maby even have an angel or to.
Yes, he has magnificent powers, but can't leave his throne, because of his constant mind-battle with the deamons, wich try to find an entrance in this world.
So he sends one of his sons, to battle it out... :D
No plans for angels yet...
@rules
I will go for "this very ground" with a lot of add ons for the wierd stuff.
The rules where used before by my gaming group for all kinds of stuff, even for vikings and did very well: fast, easy to understand...
Cheers,
DV
-
Meravigliosamente fatto. :)
-
just love the whole idea, excellent scratch building and painting :-*
-
A Vampire in Venice! :o
Wait tell the Doge finds out! ::)
-
The Doge is eternal... so he'll likely be head vampire. ;)
-
I knew that the postion was for life, but eternaty is along time lol
-
Brilliant :-*
-
I like the Idea.
-
Great thread and some great models too. Look forward to the next exciting installment...
-
In a word......Awesome. Love the idea. I'm glad to see that I'm not the only one painting Swiss in Yellow and black. :D
-
I am glad you all like the idea... ;)
Been busy in the Dark Ages during the week, but managed to build something new for the wierd condottas... :)
Its the start of the next faction...
...just think of towers wich are a little bit out of balance... lol
Its a moving campanile-tank. erm yes: for Pisa.
Perhaps a bit early to post it. Just some WIP-pics, sorry.
Started with a core of styropor. Just raw and sketchy.
Glueing it together. Stabalised with toothpicks.
Then some balsawood is chopped to the right length.
And giving some detail with the toothpicks to it, carving lines...
Next is glueing the wood to the core.
After the tower-base is planked I builded a small lookout at the top.
After that a few wheels are added for mobility. The tank will be drawn from inside so it will be pretty slow.
So far it looked more like a siegetower so I added two gunpits at each side.
Took me 3 hours so far.
Cheers,
DV
-
lol Love it 8)
cheers
James
-
That's an interesting build.
It looks very promising. :-*
-
I cant wait to see the completed leaning tower.
-
I really love those minis, DonVoss! You did a terrific job!
-
So hows the wierd condotta comeing along?
-
So hows the wierd condotta comeing along?
I am afraid its on hold for the moment, because I am lost in the Dark Ages... lol
DV
-
I have can see that. lol
There are just to many great eras of history to game.
-
Wonderful thread! :-*
Fantasy reinassance rules. Great job Don, keep going!
