Im thinking on getting into Darkest Africa, and in the meantime while I waited on delivery of some new miniatures I painted up this Red Box Games miniatures.
She will be used as a witchdoctor or maybe as temptation for Tarzan or some other hero.

I like it. Can't wait to see more!
-
Very nice. I love the leopard skin; great work.
Cheers

-
Cool figure.
Very fine painting.
-
She will work fine for a "smelling out" ceremony setting! Good find!
-
She :D
-
Thanks guys. Yesterday some new toys arrived.
I would love to get some Foundrys Masai warriors later on, but its no way in hell that I am going to pay €19.20 for 6 of them.
Much better to get a box of plastic warriors instead.
A small review of Perrys: Mahdist Ansar - Sudanese Tribesmen on my blog.

She looks great, the elvish ears are my favorite !
Who casts the figure please?
-
That model is Red Box Games http://red-box-games.com/
But she is about to be remodeled and recast. So she is put as "last stock" http://red-box-games.com/index.php?main_page=product_info&cPath=20&products_id=31
Hopefully the next version of the model will be as good.
-
A lovely, dusky Vulcanette - is this VSF meets Darkest Africa? lol
-
I have that figure, and never considered using her in an African setting. Very creative, and well done!
-
Very nice, the leopard print in particular

You know I almost bought those Perry Mahdist Ansar figures. Now I wish I had :(
-
Nicely painted figures.
Two questions, please.
Who are they going to fight, British?
What rules are you going to play with?
-
Thanks guys.
Who are they going to fight, British?
The plan is to get some diffrent african tribes and battle it out, pitting diffrent tribes against each other.
What rules are you going to play with?
I havn´t decided yet but Im thinking on using Hail Ceasar, seeing it used in a Wargames Illustrated for african tribal wars and as I have the rules at home. Mayby later on I will get "propper" african rules.
-
I finished a small Zulu warband to battle my other African tribe.
http://kampgruppe-engel.blogspot.se/2012/06/zulu-warband.html
This Zulu box is just great, you just got to love them.

Nice to see them progressing!
What did you use to make the plant like in your previous photos?
-
Thanks Rob.
I found some plastic vegitation in a garden shop vile shoping flower to my mum.
Cut them to pieces (the plastic one that is..) and glued them all on bases.
Maybe this little thing could tell you better. Not a real tutorial but maybe it could help you somewhat.

The Zulu warriors had found a huge key ring of the phantom in "gold" and had started their celibrations of this, the noise had upset their neighbors and something had to be done about it…
-
Nice AAR. :)
I like your rules on the witchdoctor, I'll try something similar in my African campaign world.
-
Fine looking figures.
Looks as you guys had a blast playing the game.
Also enjoyed looking over your blog.
-
Thanks guys.
Traveler Man > I as a umpire I didnt tell the player what the witchdoctor had for rules but rather told him that the unit she joined became immortal and would strike down all their enemy with ease.
It seems she lied to them as they all died pretty brutal... :D
Marine0846 > Thanks for taking the time.

A small skull pile. Strange skulls…
A small religious symbol on a pile of skulls, must be some kind of moon cult living here?
And a small furry thing, is it alive or just a small puppet?
No one really knows and if I use them differently in each game the players will be wary for these addition to the battle fields… Never knowing what to expect, if its looks dangerous its safer to stay away…

Simba ?

The miniature are based on a standard Flames of war base.
Im not sure what stats to give him in Hail Caesar.
But I plan to use him as either a terrain piece or as neutral unit that attacks using only his initiative order. So if one player ventures to close to the lion he will get angry and attack, it they leave him bee he will mostly sleep under a tree or something.
It could work.

I needed some huts for my african tribes. :)

Really some great additions to your figures.
Great looking huts. Love them.
-
African Death cult.
(I think I could need a better name for them later. lol )
Maybe not historical correct but i think its hard to prove they didn´t exist somewhere some time. ;)
Many many more pictures > http://kampgruppe-engel.blogspot.se/2012/11/african-death-cult.html thought they deserved lots of pictures.

The miniatures are converted Perry plastic Africans.
-
Wow great stuff all 'round, but I really dig the first model, the queen. That's a great figure and the paint work you put on it is excellent.
-
These look the business - history be DAMNED!! Nice conversions.
Where are the skulls from?
-
LOVE the death cult
-
This is one of the great things about the LAF, you look at someone's work for a period or location you normally have little interest in and not only are you hugely impressed by the quality on display, you also leave thinking 'how good would it be to do that!'. Lovely work and some great gaming ideas.
-
You paint your miniatures to a right sinister look. I like them.
-
Me and my friend Peter had another go at my African tribal war using the Hail Caesar rules.
A good game but I got my ass handled to my at the end.
http://kampgruppe-engel.blogspot.se/2012/11/tribal-wars.html
Here are a small pick of some of the pictures of it.

Special rules for this game was that all miniature could choose to either deploy in closed rank or open order given the small size of the tribal conflicts and the difficulties with the intervening terrain.
The Zulus and the Bushongo models equipped with large shields were given the special rule of given the enemy -1 to hit at ranged attack in closed rank, the same rule as heavy infantry.
Some after thoughts:
I think that the altered stats from previous games are a lot better. Im not totally sure about the Zulus so some tinkering to the next game may be in order.
The lion worked surprisingly good and I think he will be used I many games to come, maybe some small altering of stats.
Any thoughts on the game or tips on how I could alter the stats, give units special rules or something else is appreciated. So next game can be even better. All the pictures from the game can be found at my blog for those interested.
Thanks for looking.
-
Dont know how I missed this project, it is wonderful.
Nice work, Engel!

Loving the Death Cult most of all.

Many many more pictures as well as some more text can be found at > http://kampgruppe-engel.blogspot.se/2013/01/kushites.html
Besides using them in my Tribal Africa project they could be used against (and in service as mercenaries to) Egyptians, Persians even later the Romans. :D

Really like those Kushites, didn't they used to be from another company?
-
really great figures and paint jobs, finding the whole project very inspirational :)
u got more planned or this is all the forces u doing?
thanks for sharing.
-
Thanks guys.
Slayer: I add things all along when I find the inspiration.
I should really focus on two main tribes and just add things to those but I find new "shiny" stuff all the time so that original plan failed.
Things I have considered but not done yet is getting some pygmies and Ilas. It would be fun to get a full Masai tribe later on but the cost of Foundry is holding me back at that. At the moment I should focus on the things I got in the drawer and paint that before I ad more miniatures to the leadmountain.
And a new update.
More pictures @ http://kampgruppe-engel.blogspot.se/2013/04/beja-swordsmen.html (http://kampgruppe-engel.blogspot.se/2013/04/beja-swordsmen.html)
I needed a little painting brake from the last Napoleonic unit and my current main project so I painted up these fellows for my Tribal African project, some Beja Swordsmen.
With their white clothes and swords these are a little to civilised for my taste but they will make a striking unit clad in white on the tabletopp.

more nice looking figures, glad to see your back into it.
Keep it up ;)
You've given me the bug now, ive painted up 30 (25 to go) of cobblestones Ngoni figures, plus built them a village and started a gunboat. Most modelling iv gone for years :o :D :D
-
Thanks, glad to inspire.
You just got to show them off here on LAF, Slayer :D
-
ill post up here after the next lot done and all basing is done...
-
WOW!
I draw my hat to every aspect of Your project.
If this is not the kind of creativity with historical background I like then I don't know what else could be.
This might rather belong into the fantasy or pulp board, but it is hardly important.
Others add mammoths that help building pyramids and make movies out of it.
Speaking of which - have You considered using the LOTR Olifants?
-
Thanks, former user. Much appreciated.
There will be no Oliphants here, maybe some Elephants later on thou.
I wanted this project to be historical before the "white man" and gunpowder.
That’s at least the original plan.
The none-historical part is that I’m mixing different tribes over time and almost all over Africa. I know that its historical disgusting but I motivate it by a tribe could very well resemble another tribe and over hundred or even thousands of years with little if none written history many different people must have lived at this great continent. And by same logic the “pulpy” looking fellows could be just a small group of people that tried a new way to intimidate their opponents.
As history probably shows this is not the best way to oppose your enemy and that group died of. But let’s face it, I don’t expect most inhabitants to live very long in this project…
And if I can find a way to use those cheap plastic kits that’s now present on the markets even better for this growing sideproject. Unfortunately this means that cheap plastic Zulus will face a tribe from far far away, but maybe its not really the Zulus but a tribe looking very similar to them and we players just call them that to easier recognize them.
And another reason would of course be that I will probably not start any other project that lets me use all this shiny African stuff…
Thanks for showing interest.
-
Some new light infantry for my Zulus.
Kitbashed some of Warlords plastic Zulus with some extra Perrys arms and some wirespears thrown in to the lot.

These are my last Kushite miniatures from my Lead pile and I am wondering what I should get next for them.
Im thinking on getting more archers of the same type I previously painted to this tribe but Im also thinking on getting them some more elite, guard type of miniatures.
Warlord Games doesn’t do any guard type of Kushite so one option would be to paint the shields, clothes and the warpaint somewhat different but I think it would be more fun to try to find some other companies miniatures to add to my Kushite collection.
Im thinking on maybe looking at old Egyptian miniature lines and try to find some that could fit.
Any one got any good ideas that would be much appreciated, thanks.
-
love that war paint, so well done
any chance of a group shot at some point??
-
Thanks.
Will do.
Its a nice way to really see what you got. And the sum of its parts are often more impressive to look at then individual miniatures anyway.
-
i dont know abut that as all your figures r very nice to look at :)
U make me fell lazy (well i am i guess) about not getting the 16 figures left i need to get done ::)

I needed to do a sort of inventory of my Tribal Africa collection and the easiest way to do that was to just take pictures of it all so I could look and count exactly what I got later when I got more time.
But with the pictures taken I thought I could share them.

Newly painted, more trackers/ skrimishers.
Using the Perrys plastic box with some extra wire spears and their heads looking at the ground searching for tracks you can realy easy make some nice trackers.

-
What's with the giant metal-looking figure in the back of the last photo in your first post?
-
you've got yourself quite a force there now
-
Big thanks all.
What's with the giant metal-looking figure in the back of the last photo in your first post?
Thats a keyring of the Phantom... will make a nice idol or terrain piece. :D
-
Very nice. I've already got another box of those Perry plastics ordered. Yours look great!
...now I wish I'd ordered two more boxes. lol lol
-
Everything in this thread is absolutely brilliant. I'm jealous...very jealous.
-
Wonderful top notch work here Engel! :o
I love the variety of the tribes, keep 'em coming!
Gotta ask, what's your paint recipe for the skin colour?
-
Hello, and congratulations this is very nice.
Frederic Machu
-
Brilliant stuff as always Engel!

I had these movement trays specially made for me by http://tinyterrain.com/ (http://tinyterrain.com/)and I think they will be perfect for this project.
Will ease the movement of troops on the table without making them look to formaly ranked.

These are just two of the bases and I did these as a sort of test run, and I like them so I think I will base the others like this.

I already commented on your blog ... still. I really like the trays. Now all you have to do is find some suitable african style dice ... those bleak white "things" don't do your miniatures any justice!
:)
-
I love that idea.
If you (or anyone else for that matter) finds anyone suiting please tell me where.

This Gemsbok is intended to be used as a sort of backdrop or terrain piece for my African games.

Apparently a male Gemsbok could weigh as much as 300kg, thats a lot of meat on the table...

Looks good!

Very nice colours as usual! Wonderful earth tones.

Just a small update.

They look great!

I felt the urge to paint some tribesmen again...
Some lovely miniatures from North Star and the Medicine man from Foundry.

Some more Jungle Cannibals from North Star.

Fine young cannibals :)
Good to see this is still alive. It's nice to have a project you can come back to like this, and dip in and out of.

Nice to see an update on this.

Agreed.
I am starting to think that this is the way forward.
Dipping in and out of various projects to keep things fresh.

Thanks.
After that last unit of Jungle cannibals for my tribal Africa project I thought it wast best to try to finish of all my half painted warriors for this project and so I painted these small units of Zulu warriors.

Feels good to take up some older miniatures from a project and actually finish them of. So its not only the latest purchased miniatures thats are given some paint.
The miniatures are from Wargames Foundry and were bought when they sent a free pygmy with spears to all orders, and they sent me an extra on top of that, neat.

Don't know how I missed this thread until now - great stuff, and you've given me a few ideas of how to handle my own foray into Colonial Africa.
One thing confuses me, though: Have the Warlord Zulus been available for a long time, already?? The text on their website states that they are, quote: "Released week commencing 5th December - earlier if we can manage it!"
I only became aware of their plastic Zulus very recently, and reading that passus, I thought they were just about to get released... :?
-
Thanks Argonor.
Those Warlord Plastic Zulus have been out for some years now. :P
-
Well, so much for updating websites... lol
I am struggling with prepping some WGF Brits I got as a freebie years ago, and I have almost convinced myself getting the Zulu Starter Army next month, so I should have enough to cater for all my Zulu needs for quite some time, then...
-
Its alive....
Yeah yeah... it was some time since I last posted here.

I made a batchpainting of some new Kushites/ Nubians for my Tribal African sideproject...
Kushites from Footsoore miniatures and the civilians from Coblestone Castings

Lots to love on this thread… and even more on the blog. Great work Engel!

About time to breath some new life into this thread...
I just painted up another tribe, the Ila

Nice they look great. The Ila are on my one day project list a very different military set up compared to their neighbours and enemies like the Lozi, Chukunda, Makololo and Matabele. Those miniatures are also really good for conversions especially the warriors in wrap around skirts I used them to make some Lomwe from Malawi

Neat.
Thanks.
The hairdo and the shields makes them look totally different.
-
Nicely done :)
-
I like all of these 8)
-
They do indeed look good!
-
I'm not sure why people insist on painting the eyes, but these guys look great.
-
Thanks.
I tried to skip the eyes at first but it didnt look good. As I painted these miniatures so dark they needed that extra details to look better.
-
It certainly gives the figures more character, it's just not my bag.

This is such an exciting thread! I too have plans to have a similar game topic, so I am truly inspired over what I’ve seen here.
About tropical vegetation … To make the battlefield or exploration area look more authentic, I’ve found these three useful suggestions for vegetation in much of Latin America, SE Asia and Africa.

I hope it helps.

PS. I found a source for the “thorn thickets”. Just select “Type 3”:

Lovely games and AARs!

The thorn bushes have arrived!!!
And they look exactly as advertised, perfect for semi arid thorn bushes.
