Title: Any "Disposable heroes" experiences?
Post by: Prof.Witchheimer on October 06, 2006, 01:32:09 PM
Any "Disposable heroes" experiences? I've got the rules book and the russian army book but a little frightened of the millions of the tables...What is the ideal size (points or models) of an average DH troup?

Tables? Most tables are easy enought to remember that you don't need the book anymore after 2 games. Each vehicle has a statt card though.
It's roughly a Platoon a side, 500-1000pts.

Well, I almost bought the Disposable Heroes rules. In the end though I went for NUTS! That is about it for my Disposable Heroes experiences though. Sorry I couldn't be of much help.

I can say though that NUTS! is great for its reactive action. No more of that plain old I GO YOU GO action...

Have you played it alerady? I had some games using the old edition of Guns and Girls and found the reaction system an interesting idea but it made the game very defensive because it is always better to wait for the enemy to go into your line of fire than to move towards the enemy actively.

I can see what you are saying about defensive playing. What is ultimately comes down to however is the objective of the battle. If you set an objective for the game that requires one group to cross the table, and give it a turn limit, then those soldiers will have to go eventually or simply fail.

When you think about it though, soldiers that aren't ordered to advance would really just sit in cover and hope to hell that they don't get killed. But when that Soviet Political officer orders them to advance, they have to get off their but and advance!

That being said of course, I have seen advances made with great success on occasion. But it is hard to advance in the face of an entrenched enemy! One thing that I found is that you should move your whole squad out at once (as you can either move them out one at a time or all at once). After moving them out all at once the enemy doesn't start taking in-sight tests until all of the squad (or group) has moved out, thus making it much more likely that some will not take fire or will not duck back and then hidden enemies will be spotted. After that let the slaughter begin :)

Also, move out those big machine guns (in the case of NUTS! and FNG anyway) along with the group and cover them with bodies until they can set up. If you even get one set up out of three then the enemy is in real trouble.

Anyway, hope that helps a bit...

I      love DHCF7B.  I was skeptical at first, but have found it to be quick, detailed enough to not be too detailed, and very intuitive.  Coming from playing BGEEWW2 where we never finished a game to now being able to do large platoon size forces per player with armor support in under 3hrs.  Because of these rules, our club's interest in WW2 has skyrocketed with a lot of new players and gamers.  Also their rule system is great for other periods like Inter War, SCW, and even Back of Beyond.  They are releasing a Moderns ruleset in two weeks and next one after that is The Spanish Civil War.

Hi Prof - I've played a couple of DH games with Tom.
The rules work very well and the action flows very nicely.
My only complaint is that Tom's Germans keep killing all my nicely painted Paras!!!

If you join their Yahoo group at :
//games.groups.yahoo. com/group/ironivan/

They have a couple of teaser Army lists of their upcoming Spanish Civil War supplement for free as pdfs in their file section.

They are Leftist Militias and Carlist Militias

Cheers,

I like the game very much. Don't be scared by the tables, it's very easy.
