Title: 1:1000 Star Wars *10.01.17 Continuing the Nebulon-B, side panels done*
Post by: OSHIROmodels on April 26, 2012, 11:51:27 PM
A little project that's been in the back of my mind for a good while and has finally seen the light of day  :D Star Wars ship combat in 1:1000 using a modded version of Full Thrust.

Being a professional modelmaker I can be a bit of a stickler for scale so all the ships I do will be to the same scale, namely 1:1000. The main reason for doing it this scale is the ease of scaling the ships themselves, one meter equals one millimetre. The other reason is that I fancied making a smallish blockade runner and this seemed the right scale.

Some parts might seem a bit skew but these buggers are rather small and my eyesight isn't getting any better  lol

Obviously for the game weapon ranges will be reduced somewhat but it should work fine  :)

Anyway, onto some pictures  :D

First off we have a couple of Tie fighters with a 28mm bod next to them to show the ridiculous size of them...

And then we have progress and complete shots of the X-Wings
(http://i279.photobucket.com/albums/kk138/jimbibbly/Star%20Wars/e64b63e3.jpg)

And now a comparison shot...

And the holy grail that will be helping me along the way  :D
(http://i279.photobucket.com/albums/kk138/jimbibbly/Star%20Wars/5cdcf212.jpg)

I love this book and it was worth every single penny!

The ships should look better with a bit of paint on them (maybe tomorrow) and I'm still undecided whether to paint the bases black or leave them clear  ???

I've also made a brief start on a Lambda class shuttle and have got the plans sorted for a blockade runner. Also in mind are lots more fighters (although I'm going to cheat and laser as many parts as possible), a Nebulon B frigate, a couple of Skipray Blastboats, an assault shuttle or two and some more smaller capital ships (nothing really over 350 meters, as this would mean making ships over 15 inches long).

This will be a long term project (like most of the others I have  lol ) but hopefully I'll keep it going.

cheers

James

ery nice, I'm guessing these are for personal use only?

Can we hope to see a superstar destroyer and (as one of my students said) Darth Vader's House?

Cool project Jim. Good start! Using your scale does a Star Destroyer not end up about a metre and a half long? o_o :o

Lovely work, James!
 :-*
They really are tiny little buggers.
 :o

Was tempted with this theme a while ago when I saw a link to these;

http://starshipmodeler.biz/shop/index.cfm/category/206/odyssey-slipways---star-wars.cfm

May be a little easier for those of us without the eye for making such small and fiddly buggers fighters like these.

So many great Star Wars projects going on at the moment......must resist......

Thanks chaps  :)

Personal use only I'm afraid, I don't even want to think about IP and licensing costs  lol

A superstar destroyer would be 19 meters long and even I'm not that mad!

Just over, yes. This is a possibility but would take a serious amount of effort  ;D It would look rather cool though, you could have the game on it...

I've seen the Odyssey Slipways miniatures before and one of the scales certainly has its uses (1:10,000 I think) but I like the idea of including fighters at scale and I don't think the range that they have is comprehensive enough.

AW come on, for the boys at LAF  lol

Building it isn't a problem, it's hiding it from my wife that would be the killer  lol

Putting some paint on the fighters now and I have a plan of the Lambda class shuttle so that will proceed today  :)

Wouldn't even fit in the garden under a tarpaulin  lol

Just put some paint on them and looking at the photos I can see how shockingly bad the Tie fighters are  :( Never mind, I'll laser the wings out and it'll give me something straight to paint against  :)

I also think the proportions are a bit out  :?

They look good to me. I think you're being a bit harsh. If you want more detail though you could make a greenstuff mould by pressing the hexagonal wing into the putty. Once you pull that out you could add detail, like the panel framework onto the negative. Then it's just a case of casting a bundle. The only thing is all the detail would only be on the outside edge.

That is a great idea, Andym!
Alternatively you could make one wing using plasticard etc and make a mould using that 'Instant mould' malarkey.
Of course, that may be a silly idea if you want hundreds of the little buggers!

On the note of 'shockingly bad', are you bonkers, my good sir?
They look just fine and dandy to me, and when you have a whole wing of them together, the effect would be fantastic!

Although I did manage to make a Lambda class shuttle today  :) and I might even get some paint on it tonight!

And after I've standardised the fighters I'll be moving onto one of these  :D Although mine will probably have blue markings as red is for diplomatic ships.

Sadly, 3d printing for such a big piece is more than 1000 euros! =(

Well, it's been a while but this project is continuing  :)

I started on a base for the rebels, rather a large one and I'm still debating whether to have it on an asteroid (cliche) or just as a normal space base  ???

It'll have two hangers (as that's all I've done so far  lol) and will have internal lighting.

The white material is called Rowmark and it's a composite of acrylic and styrene but can be a bit of a bugger to stick. The good thing is that it can be cut on the laser and is light tight so will suit this project rather well  :)

X-wing is for scale and remember that it's only 12mm long. There's space in the other hanger for a Lambda class shuttle and I'll be making other smaller craft that'll fit as well.

Rules undecided as of yet but might be a Full Thrust variant (as these rules are great  :D ).

cheers

James

I have thought about getting them cast for my own purposes...  >:D

Got some paint on the hangers and added some details to make them look a little more 'lived in'.

The first one is the shuttle hanger...

And the second is the fighter/general purpose hanger...

I forgot to put a ruler next to them but to get an idea, the yellow markings are just less than 1mm wide  :o

The idea for the base is that it's more a small outpost/supply depot, hence the small fighter complement. Probably only a couple of flights of fighters, Y-wings and X-wings mainly with shuttles and supply ships for the rest.

Now then, I got some small scale Space Cruiser Yamato ships whilst in Japan and one or two of them would just about do for cargo haulers etc. I left the weapons off and I'm imagining the crew compartment is just under the little 'conning tower' at the rear.

That's probably it for another few months  lol but I hope not...

cheers

James

Thanks for the replies chaps  :)

The Falcon is a possibility but it'll take a bit to make properly as there isn't really anything suitable at this scale so it'll have to be scratch built and as to other terrain, no idea yet  :)

Made a medium freighter this morning and got some paint on it. Just a simple scratch build with a few bits and peices I had lying around.

Painted in the same way as the hanger ie, sprayed grey, washed and then slowly brought up with

It's about 76mm long (76 metres in 'real' terms).

(With Jim's permission) and expanding on his concept, I've been tinkering with some scraps and come up with some of the following:

Basic TIE/ln fighter (front view)
(http://i1298.photobucket.com/albums/ag56/kevinlawless1066/CSC_0989-Copy_zps12d82d97.jpg) (http://s1298.photobucket.com/user/kevinlawless1066/media/CSC_0989-Copy_zps12d82d97.jpg.html)

Basic TIE/ln (profile view)

With some very rough paint on
(http://i1298.photobucket.com/albums/ag56/kevinlawless1066/CSC_0994_zps353a2394.jpg) (http://s1298.photobucket.com/user/kevinlawless1066/media/CSC_0994_zps353a2394.jpg.html)

And a heavy cousin
(http://i1298.photobucket.com/albums/ag56/kevinlawless1066/fcc7a7e8-b05a-428d-a481-eebdf2a294d1_zpsedb646b2.jpg) (http://s1298.photobucket.com/user/kevinlawless1066/media/fcc7a7e8-b05a-428d-a481-eebdf2a294d1_zpsedb646b2.jpg.html)

And now a family shot
(http://i1298.photobucket.com/albums/ag56/kevinlawless1066/DSC_1000_zpsac73f263.jpg) (http://s1298.photobucket.com/user/kevinlawless1066/media/DSC_1000_zpsac73f263.jpg.html)

With close-up

Now they've got to have something to chase/defend
(http://i1298.photobucket.com/albums/ag56/kevinlawless1066/DSC_1004_zps2aad1d19.jpg) (http://s1298.photobucket.com/user/kevinlawless1066/media/DSC_1004_zps2aad1d19.jpg.html)

And a base to operate from (can you guess what it is yet?)
(http://i1298.photobucket.com/albums/ag56/kevinlawless1066/DSC_1006_zps197bc5b3.jpg) (http://s1298.photobucket.com/user/kevinlawless1066/media/DSC_1006_zps197bc5b3.jpg.html)

Who knew that the smaller something is, the harder it is?  o_o

More family shots as they happen and special thanks to the wifey who can actually operate a camera for this four thumbed luddite.

Indeed it is. The Neb B was an Imperial anti-fighter frigate before the Rebs nicked it so I'm returning one to it's former glory.

Thanks for the encouragement for both of us chaps  :)

Good man Kev  :D

Shall we do this for BLAM next year (serious question)?

Like the medium transport, how did you do the form? I'll be vacforming mine.

Do you do this for a living?

I make architectural models of buildings for quite often pretentious architects for a living. This is far much more fun and it's what I would choose as a living.

This is a very well-timed update for me as I am coming to the end of the Timothy Zahn trilogy right now.
 ;)

I have somewhere a very good rendering of the upper surface of Coruscant that might see a 1/1000 version made of it for surface attacks etc...

I will be getting the fighters cast but I'll make each type first (Imperial as well  ;D ). I will also be sticking, for now, to purely film based ships and maybe move onto other canon at a later date  :)

cheers

James

Cheers Jim!

I really wanted to have enough ready for Christmas  :? but, c'est la vie.  we could to a small thing for this year like a convoy attack or similar, or just bring them along for a show and tell.

The form of the transport was made from a plasticard oval roughed out and the spine added on.  Then the bulk was filled out with foamcard and homebase polyfilla'd with some sanding to taste.  Add a coat of thin plasticard shapes and a butt load of cargo containers, some gribblies, et voila!

For the fighters, I didn't think you could safely cast that small!
With the Imperials, if you can, I'd like the canted wings for the TIE Bomber and Interceptors as I can complete the cockpits myself.  I'm not sure I'd want to try making the rebel snubs at all so I'd happily pick up a couple of squadrons of each (for target practice and scenery wrecks  :D)

I think a bit of bulking out will have to be done for the snubs but have a look at some of the better 6mm figures (Baccus etc) and you'll see a fine level of detail can be achieved.

Not a Crimbo, no but certainly another mini-BLAM  :)

I had a brief idea of making one larger capitol scale ship, like the Imperial Escort Carrier (http://starwars.wikia.com/wiki/Escort_carrier) and making it hinged and hollow so I could store the other ships inside.  :D

Hexes all the way, probably a two or a three inch hex with capitals on similar and fighters four to a base but on one inch or smaller to allow multiple bases in a hex.

Having a little trouble finding the correct dimensions online for a tie fighter and interceptor. Any chance you could refer to your 'bible' and give me the height, width and depth of these dude, assuming your looking at them head on.

Also, what size are your bases? One of the five 'faces' measures what in length?

I wouldn't mind a few dozen of those for my ships as well!  :P

I'm sure Jim will sort you out with a few when he next see's you!

One more question Jim, What was the diameter of the acrylic ball you used for the cockpit? :)

After seeing the scale comparison image of fictional space vehicles, I was surprised by how small star was and star trek were. That freighter was not much more than a few pixels. So as such I expect to see you chaps produce a super star destroyer in the future. ;P

I'm wondering what's next? 10mm pirates, 6mm Star Wars.. 3mm?..

Think the phrase your looking for is

Thanks for all the comments chaps!

As to the scaling question, if I understand your query correctly CB, the Neb B is listed at 300 meters, 1:1000 brings it to 30cm and about 20cm tall, fairly easy to handle.

I still need to sort out the bases and such but that is dependant on the structure of the rules we will use and getting the appropriate stuff from Bibbly Wan Kenobi [poke for discussion]

Here's the next little update, I wanted a fully finished, painted ship to drive me on.

when I get round to the second freighter, I might make it with lines sympathetic for casting.

Also on the bench (but a bit camera shy), are:

The undercoated and ready for paint Neb-B
Three full squadrons of TIE/ln fighters
One squadron of Z-95 headhunters
Four shuttles of various types

Comments/suggestions always welcome!

Thanks chaps.  I was bored with the idea of painting grey so I thought that the commercial ships would be more colourful.

Maybe the next one should be in Eddie Stobart colours? With a girls name on the front?

Or a blue/red combo and have Maersk in big letters down the side?

Now that would be an idea! IIRC green is also the colour of CorSec which would suit a YT1300 nicely as well!  :D

No probs Jim, why not just store it all in the Wizards' Tower.  It's big enough innit?  ;D

This is as much for my amusement as to actually get anything done so i am going to continue for a while whilst the mood still has me. (Of course, if you want to send me some of those Tantive IV engines, I wouldn't say no.  :D )

Finally made a start on a Nebulon-B class frigate. It's been modified a bit from the Imperial version (of which I can't find any photographic reference  :? ) but will have hangers enough for two squadrons of snubfighters in it  :)

I've bought hundreds of plastic model kits over the years and have the parts all sorted into types, sizes etc. I can spen hours shifting through them all finding the right part for the right location and to be honest, like anything really, it all comes down to practice  :)

It can be quite therapeutic most of the time  8)

I carried on with the engine section and it's now complete. I'll be moving into the hanger bays next and getting the super structure to fit round them.

I did see a dodgy image of an artists impression of an Imperial Nebulon-B and although it's a feasible way of looking at it it doesn't quite sit right in my mind. If I can find it again I'll post it here so you know what I mean.

Anyway, onto pictures  :)

Thanks again all  :)

Got a Tie hanger bay done for it as this particular ship is going to be for an Imperial governor in a back water system somewhere. They do (according to the general blurb) have the capacity for two squadrons of fighters, that's 24 ships. It is possible but a lot of the innards would have been removed and given over to fighter bays.

Anyway, enough prattle, here's some pictures  :)

It's a chemiwood body clad in 0.5mm rowmark with a few bits of gubbins here and there. It's about 105mm long not including the antenna at the front and is armed with two dual laser cannons.

I'm waiting for Rogue One to come out before I carry on with the Nebulon B as there are some in the trailers and I want to see how different they are to the medical frigate (the screen shots I've seen aren't that clear).

cheers

James

Taken from a Rogue One trailer, eh.
I cant help thinking of an AT-AT 'body' when looking at it.
 ;)

Nice build, mate.
Very effective.

I feel as though it should have been painted a deep scarlet colour with the letters R-E-D-D-W-A-R-F arranged in some sort of order along the side! ;) :-*

Beautiful vessel that, in it's blocky Imperial way :)

You plan to double-purpose it (the lower left pic) as a gun turret for the bigger scale SW games? ;)

Belated thanks chaps  :)

Carrying on with the Nebulon-B build after finding some rather useful bits in the bits box. I think I'm going to do the side pieces at work on the laser as I'm lazy and the cuts will be cleaner. I'll also machine or print the front curved section (probably print) and then it's on to the final panelling and details  :)

As mentioned before, it's not a film accurate build, just an old Imperial ship in a back water system somewhere  ;)

I'm also looking into standardising my flight basing and when I've got a suitable method I'll post something up in the Workbench. It'll be something that is modular for different ships/things, heights and sizes.

You plan to double-purpose it (the lower left pic) as a gun turret for the bigger scale SW games? ;)

Not a bad idea but I think the scaling is a bit out (I'm a bit anally retentive like that  lol ).

cheers

Love the Neb. Doesn't matter if it's screen accurate, it should look awesome when complete.

That does look like a really useful pile of scrap.
Should look the business when you have tarted them up.

Got the side panels cut and stuck last night and started to add some more details. Next will be the front section and I'll be printing it as I need to leave room for the led battery holder and switch.
