As some of you may know, a project for the summer is going to be Robin Hood, all started by our very own Millymullet Malamute ;D
I'll be making most of the terrain and we've had discussions about what to include. Keeping it Hollywood makes it a bit easier to do things as historical accuracy doesn't have to be 100% ;D
So far we are looking at...
Small cruck frame hovels
Small church
Market stalls
Castle in the corner of the table
Tilt yard
Undulating wooded hills
River gorge with a bridge (I think you know why ;) )
Competition grounds including archery butts
Monastery
Bee hives
Fields
Animal pens
Secret base camp
Large oak tree (but without foliage)
Gallows
Buildings for Nottingham castle
Road signs
Orange tree orchard
Vine yard
You get the idea, lots of stuff going on.
First off to show in progress is the small church. I've made a couple of these before and so used the same drawing file but this time I'm putting it on a larger base.

The red is the textured paint colour, the final colour will be normal stucco/whitewash colour. Just a couple of graves and there will be a wattle fence around the back.
More to follow as the project progresses :)
cheers
James

I really like your project, it's always fun to do something with a clear definition on what needs to be included and how it'll all come together. I think the most important scenes to recreate would be the Merry Men's Sherwood forest base (check World Works Games' Swampvillage terrain set for inspiration!), a random place in the forest with a road running through it and lots of places for ambushing the treasure carriage, and the castle with courtyard which could be changed for the occasion like the aforementioned archery tournament, peasant market or a public hanging.
-
How about a replica of the Major Oak (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Major_Oak)?
-
Looking good already Mr Wibblywobblywoo! ;D
-
Big trees like that are easy to do. Fair enough it would have to slightly thicker than these examples...
These are just small twigs tied/glued together so that all their wee branches go off at different angles. Polyfilla on the base and push the trees roots in and let it dry. Cover in toilet paper(un-used!!!!!) and PVA glue. Attach a lot of lichen for leaves and viola.
Seriously though, it's going to be a cool project guys!

Hi James
It will be interesting to follow the progres of the Robin Hood terrain making.
Nice to get a chanse to say hi at salute, stunning samurai demo game !!!!
Best regards Michael
-
Thanks chaps :)
Yes, forgot to add the base camp for Robin, line of sight will be a factor in the games.
I also forgot to add the big tree to the list ::) I've amended it now.
Nice to get a chanse to say hi at salute
Yes indeed Michael, good to meet you too and now I know your forum name :)
cheers
James

Excellent idea! Will enjoy watching this come together.
Dont forget the ubiquitous Hollywood style tavern or Inn. Friar Tuck will be most displeased if you do.
-
Looks nothing like our local church ;D ;D
I reckon this is really just about the pair of you wanting to prance around in tights :o

I reckon this is really just about the pair of you wanting to prance around in tights :o
Dont give them ideas.
They may decide to dress the part if they take it to Salute next year!

:o
Well we all know who Little John will be. ;) :D
-
Thats a serious list of terrain. You really got your work cut out to get that lot complete.
Great start though. Will watch this thread with interest.
-
You could always use mine you know ;)
I have pretty much everything listed except the tilt yard and the castle...
(And you know I want one of those, so make a couple while you're at it, there's a good Bibbly...)
Ah, but seriously, I wouldn't want to try to deny the world of wargames modelling a distinctive Jimbo take on a bucolic English country scene...
I'm really looking forward to seeing it - and playing on it :)
If this is going to appear at BLAM, sounds like there might be quite a medieval vibe, since Silent Invader and I are furiously mustering our forces to stage a Wars of the Roses spectacular - Surrey vs Essex. 'Owzat!
-
By Jimbo, you don't do things by halves!
Crack on, crack on, your audience awaits :D
(WotR Essex vs Surrey..... an historic take on TOWIE vs Made in Chelsea?!)
-
Thanks for the comments chaps although I'm not wearing tights ;D
Richard, many thanks for the offer but I think I'll be making everything ;)
Got some paint on the church and started the groundwork but I've got some orders to sort out for the rest of today.

The roof will be thatched and the large tree is removable, which will be the case for all the trees in the project (easy access and all that :) )
cheers
James
-
Looking good James! :-*
-
Coming along nicely.
Is the textured paint a homemade concoction?
-
Looking good!
Do you not sleep?
-
Thanks muchly gents :)
It's a mix of B+Q textured masonry paint (which isn't really :-[ ), filler and very fine sand.
I do sleep, generally at work lol
Groundwork is done, only things left to do are the wattle fence and the thatched roof (the items for both are in the bottom of the cupboard and I can't be bothered rooting around for them ::) ).

You're off to a very nice start!
How did you model the tree - is it made of tree armatures for branches and a dowel for the trunk?
-
It's looking great already. ;D
-
Great project and very nice start. Another inspirational thread I'll have to follow closely, JimB.
;D
-
Same question from me about the tree?
Also a nice bit of ivy, where did you get it?
Windows are very nice but look a bit modern. They could do with a bit of lead.
-
The tree is an old from work and it is a brass etched one.
I think you're right about the windows Colin, I'll have a think about them. Fortunately the frames aren't stuck in yet.
cheers
James
-
Yes, some cross pieces on the windows would be good. Also I might consider a stone wall over a fence?
-
Lovely, James :-*
-
Looking greate !
Very interesting to follow the construction
Best regards Michael
-
Thanks again chaps :)
The church is now finished and I've done a couple of other smaller buildings to make a proper start on a village. I've also started on a barn.
It would seem that the local monks are being set upon by a ne'er do well lord and F**king Massive John is has taken umbridge to it lol

What figure are you using for Little John? Is it the Foundry one? If so, what figures are you using for the knights? I am looking for a decent Little John for my Robin Hood games, but cannot find one that works.. :'(
Your help and aswers will be most gratefully appreciated.
Regards,
Hitman

Stunning buildings James !!!
Best regards Michael
-
You don't hang about!
Looking fab and any chance of some close ups of individual buildings?
-
You don't hang about!
I don' think he sleeps..... ;)
They look great, can't wait for the first game, we are getting closer all the time :D
-
Thank you gents :)
Hitman, it is the Foundry one, done as a limited edition run I think. Just search here for F**king Massive John and you'll find his very own thread ;)
The knights are from Crusader miniatures and paint up rather well although the normal foot troops are a bit lacking in dynamism.
Close ups later this week :)
cheers
James
-
Stunning update, James!
FMJ is certainly eye-catching, but he has every right to be angry, bloody Norman scum bothering his lovely buildings like that.....
I don' think he sleeps..... ;)
You should be very grateful that have your very own scenery building insomniac!
;)
-
coming along nicely :)
-
WOW :-* :-* :-*
Really pumping these out. At this rate you will soon be finished :o
-
Thanks chaps :)
Another small update today as I've got the barn done, nearly finished a small stable/woodstore/whatever and made a start on the monastery :)
I'll do some close ups for Steve later this week with some shots of the board (just for you matey).
Actually, the barn isn't finished as it needs a base ::) bugger

Close up of the door
(http://i279.photobucket.com/albums/kk138/jimbibbly/Robin%20Hood/ac67868d.jpg)
The small 'thing' still needs a simple roof to go on it and a bit of dirt on the inside
(http://i279.photobucket.com/albums/kk138/jimbibbly/Robin%20Hood/cd3a2ec7.jpg)
And the main hall of the monastery. This will eventually have cloisters, north, south and east wings and a small walled hero garden.
cheers
James
-
Looking great James! This is going to be another huge as well as stunning collection.
The monastery is a great addition and I am frothing for you to start on the castle....
:D
Oh and thanks that you'll be following up on the board images for me. ;)
-
Just found this thread - fantastic buildings James; they look spot-on for medieval.
Amazing what you can do with the laser cut plastic for the framework - plus great modelling and painting skills to bring them to life.
Looking forward to seeing more.
Simon.
PS - am gathering info and thoughts re a medieval 'building' and will send you a PM soonest.
-
:o Very nice. I love your work. What material did you use for the monastery? And how did you cut/mold it?
Regards Za
-
Simon, I look forward to receiving it :)
The monastery is laser cut from 6mm acrylic, mitred on the table saw and stuck together. I've got the roof roughed out as well now using the internal bracing as decorative wood work. You'll see what I mean when it gets posted.
cheers
James
-
Just lovely!
Why did you go for Acrylic! It is nit exactly the easiest material to work with.
-
Bloody hell old fruit, you're on fire! :-* :-*
-
I think he was inspired by our trip to Deutschland... ;)
Either that or he's on steroids lol
-
It is not exactly the easiest material to work with.
It is if you have a laser like he does.
-
I rather meant later on... Painting it and making the paint stick on clear acrylic.
-
Car spray primer does the trick no problem :)
cheers
James
-
It is if you have a laser like he does.
Don't you mean owning a "Giant Laser" ;)

"Nottingham!"
"Nottingham!"
"It's only a model"
"Sshhh"
The impetus for BLAM has had me painting a castle to represent Nottingham in our Hollywood Robin Hood games. Only one tower done with the roof but it's a quick and easy paint job so it won't take long to do the walls.
I decided on a light sandstone as grey can get a bit boring sometimes.

The roof tiles are from the sheets available on my website and given a quick coat of paint and weathered along with the tower.
Should have it out on Saturday on some boards for better photos :)
cheers

Cor!!!!! :-* :-*
-
Ooooooooooooh. Nice :)
-
Nice use of the GW Fortress! That's fantastic!! :-* :-*
-
Absolutely marvelous James :-* :-* :-* :-* :-* :-*.
Can't wait to see the pics of this game- I only wish that I could have made it down- at least the miniatures for Malamute will be there :).
Darrell.
-
Excellent stuff, can't wait to see Robin and F*****G massive John scale that wall and rescue Marion or some such nonsense. :)
-
I decided on a light sandstone as grey can get a bit boring sometimes.
That was a good choice given that's what it was mostly made from :D
Nottingham is a sandstone city, makes for some interesting colours in places.
-
It's probably too late to make this suggestion but why not include some of the caves around the castle and (for old times sake James ;)) include the Trip to Jerusalem? 8) :D
Darrell.
-
...include the Trip to Jerusalem...
Yes, complete with 28mm 'scale' beer mats over the top of 28mm pint glasses so dust from that flaky ceiling doesn't fall in their drinks lol
-
This is not the castle I am looking for :o
-

Trust in James.... he's capable of even this!

Lovely work, James.
:-*
Those roof tiles of yours certainly do the job.
Sandstone: You know it makes sense!

great bit of painting o complement a great bit of building 8)

Thanks muchly chaps :)
The Jerusalem eh? I'll think on it ;)

Such a great thread! :-*
I wonder how the hell I could have missed it until now...
-
The Jerusalem eh? I'll think on it ;)
If you need reference, I'm sure I can sort out a venture down there to take pictures etc. I can press a couple of other guys into the trip to keep me company too :D

You should probably consider this to be your duty anyway lol. Having said that, I don't know how many times James made it to the Trip during the Ye Olde WAB weekenders but I expect that he knows the place well enough :o ;) :) :)
Darrell.

This thread is bullseye..... ;)

Yes, forgot to add the base camp for Robin,
With all those green tights around do you mean base camp for Robin....or camp base for Robin ;) lol

Ohh don't worry I can multitask!

Darrell.
Actually I only made it once with (name drop time) Lord Sherwell, Soaps and Alan Perry :D
A camp base might be quite appropriate looking at some of the Foundry figures I've picked up over the past months lol
For the time being Nottingham castle is at work undergoing some expense renovation but I do have some photos of a manor house with a walled garden that is slowly progressing.

The building itself is one I've had for a good many years (about 11) in a state of incompleteness so it was high time to sort it out. After looking at some recreated medieval/renaissance gardens it would appear that they were raised beds containing herbs and veggies and the like, so that's what the scribbling is in the interior of the wall. The gateway will probably have a lasered gate on possible working hinges but I doubt it. The wall will match the sandstone of the castle walls just to tie it in.
cheers
James
-
Ooooooooh. We wants it Precioussss >:D
-
That looks great, keep up the good work!
-
Marvelous stuff James it has to be said.
Can't wait to see the pics of the game- with all those beautifully made and painted terrain and miniatures of course ;) 8).
Darrell.
-
wow... ;)
-
Very impressive James - as expected from your builds. :)
It looks like most of that manor is made from light card - amazing!!
-
Looking realy good.
nice to see how it build up and not only the finished product, gives one a loot of ideeas and inspiration !
Best regards Michael
-
Great stuff James!!! I'm dying to see this in the flesh next week!! ;) No pressure!!
-
Will this be making an appearance next week? If so brilliant
Eric

It looks alright I suppose.... :D

Thank you kindly chaps :)
;) No pressure!!

More to follow tonight after work (on a break at the mo ::) ).

Amazing work on the terrain and miniatures James!

Really beautiful work! Richard

This is coming along very nicely.
Very nicely, indeed!
:-*

Unfortunately chaps, Photobucket seems to be having a mardy :-[ so pictures will have to wait until tomorrow but at least it'll have some more paint on it :)

Paint this afternoon/evening. There will be a little set or steps going to the door that's in mid-air and possibly another tiled roof depending how much time I've got ::) lol
The cut walls were done with a band saw and then given a quick go on the disc sander to neaten them.
cheers

No such extravagance ;D Simple band saw and disc sander.
Got some paint on it and now it's drying after being inked. Drybrushing on Sunday after work. Also did a bit extra on the walled garden but on that later.

Some serious effort going on there.
Keep it up, mate.

Brill!! :o
I'm I right in thinking that's all GW fortress? The doors dont look familiar ???
-
Beautiful work Jim!!! So many talented people on this forum, makes me kind of proud to be a member :)
-
That castle is coming along nicely :)
-
Awesome! :o
A childhood dream becomes real!
-
Walls are done, just need to paint the doors and gate.
It is the GW one Andy, it's not a bad deal considering the size and the plastic is quite soft fr conversion work (I still prefer the old polystyrene one though :D)

The royal standard was 'acquired' from the net and I'll have a couple more along with some streamer type banners hanging off the battlements.
I'm also going to put some growies around the bottoms of the wall just to give it a little extra something.
Obviously it will look much better in situ but I haven't got the time to set something up (been at work all weekend :-[ ).
cheers
James
-
Getting even better! Lovely stonework :-*
Quite imposing from that angle, too!
-
Looks good. Not as good as those lovely Hudson and Allen castles, obviously, but none too shabby for a quickie ;)
-
Nice stonework.
Nearly there, mate! (?)
-
Looking pretty damn fine mucker :)
-
brilliant stuff :-* :-*
-
Beautiful work. A couple of nice scale sheepskin rugs and it'll be ready to move in to.
-
what colors did you use to paint that stone work?
-
Lovely stuff :-* :-* :-*
You half believe in cutting it fine.
Looking forward to seeing it at the weekend.
-
:-*
Wow... that is sweet.
Can't wait to see photos of the game.
-
Fantastic looking castle. Did you cut the walls down onto diagonals? If so, how did you do it...besides carefully ;)
Thanks for any tips and hints in advance.
Regards,
Hitman

Well, well. All well and good, sir. But where will the good Tuck be working on making his honey mead? Yes, the bee hives. But what about the brewery? lol Good inspiration for my own Robin Efforts - in a smaller scale, of course, and without so much original construction. Fun period.
-
I've done a little more on the walled garden, i.e. planted it :D
Just the one photo for now, got other commission work to be getting on with.
Got the iron gate to paint and the roof to do and also a bit of touching up here and there. The plants are accurate for the most part but I'm not that bothered if they're not for this project :D (Hollywood never gets it right either lol ).
what colors did you use to paint that stone work?
Just a spray tan colour inked and then dry rushed a light grey.
cheers
James
-
That is brilliant, James.
Very effective.
:-* :-* :-*
I want to thank you as well, as you have just given me an idea for the perfect thing to get my mojo up and running.
I have been lacking the urge to do anything since crimbo and an ornamental-type garden is just the thing.
Nice and straightforward and usable in quite a few genres.
Cheers!
:D

Lovely James.
Could use that in our Wars of the Roses game too ;)

Faaar to long without an update but I have one now :D
I've had some convalescing time recently (tore some ligaments in my lower back :( ) and even though I had normal work to do I got some me time in also :)
Every castle worth it's weight needs a moat so that's what I've been doing. I've used the underneath of my Mars boards to save time, effort, money and space and they will give some depth also.
Basic profiles cut out of blue foam, water is acrylic and more blue foam on the top. I'll be making a blog post to go through the details in more detail over the weekend but for now some choice piccies :)

I've also got some more figures painted but haven't taken any pictures yet and I've nearly done the roof on the walled garden house.
Most of these were taken with my camera phone so not the best quality but I'll use my decent camera when complete.
We have a test game on Monday for the rules and to make sure we know what we're doing and hopefully the moat will be done by then...
cheers

Wow! That thatched roof is looking great! I understand that it's fur and not towel, but how did you paint it? Any hints?
Trim it a bit first, coat with watered down pva, not being too careful and then wash with a couple of layers of ink (I use GW types) and then drybrush the desired light tone afterwards.
Simples :)

Great gallows (add 'Batman' to the end if that and it sounds like a 1960s Robin quote). The wheelbarrow is both practical and a nice bit of detail. I may be reading too much into this, but is the stained paving under the noose related to the loss of control of bodily functions?
-
Who is going to end up being strung up I wonder?
Looking good. Yep, we need another game soon. :)
-
Those gallows are great!!!

Very clever! Superb attention to detail :)

Attention to fecal detail is a must in gentlemanly wargaming circles.
This town is coming along amazingly and looks great. I see your partially completed image and think "Doesn't look so hard" and then it jumps to the completed version and :o
Can't wait to see more.

Top drawer stuff as usual James :-* :-* :-*
Darrell.

Marion (looking out of the bedroom window of her nicely thatched cottage) 'Ere Robin, come and look at this!. :o
Robin (Yawning) What's wrong now dearest? ???
Marion. Someones put a dirty great Gallows on our patio, and look at the nasty stain on my nice new paving! :(Those slabs came all the way from York they did! >:(
Robin. Its that *bleep* Tuck, look at him standing there with a silly smirk on his fat face!! Just wait til I get my tights on and get outside! >:(
Marion. Well while you're outside you'd better get down the Market and buy some of that fermented horse pee off Barry the Scot to get the stain out with.
Robin. Barry the Scot?
Marion. Yes, you know, he's the one who stands in the corner shouting 'Bang! and the dirt is gone!!' Him.
Robin. Alright, just wait a minute, I've got to decide which colour tights I'm wearing today, the Lincoln Green ones or the nice red ones Will gave me.
Marion. I worry about him. Anyway, try getting them one right way round today, yesterday you didn't know whether you were coming or going. lol
:D
-
Lovely work jimbibbly all around!
Amazing stuff!

And loving the gallows on the previous page! :-* Some poor victim of Norman justice emptied their bowels judging by the stain on the planks?
-
I really like the tavern set 8)
-
Excellent James - lovely little pieces.
Now how about the rest of the castle? :D
;)
-
Brill! :-* Are the table and chairs handmade?
-
Lovely! :-*
A pure scatfest! ;)
-
Thanks chaps :)
The bench and bits are from Gripping Beast but the midden heap is all my own work ;D ;)
I need a decent amount of time at work to do another castle board and the way things are at the moment it's not going to be soon (damn this coming out of recession ::) ).
cheers
James

Nice additions, a game soon me thinks. ;D
-
Great additions to a lovely board, sir.
That midden heap is a great idea and very effective.
:-* :-*
A for additions to the castle: As the NEW Sheriff, I thoroughly approve of any new additions to my paid-for accomodation.
:D
-
Very cool - love the midden heap. Never has a heap of kitchen scarps looked so good. :-*
-
Thats a beautiful Inn scenery James, lovely! Inspirational stuff.
Perfect for a pint in the beer garden, you just need a grave vine trellis. ;)
-
Nice additions, a game soon me thinks. ;D
Seconded.
-
Thirded. I could organise another mini-BLAM if you want.
Y'know Jim, the midden thing from the GW thread was meant to be a joke! But, if you are taking suggestions, a market square would be nice as well as an archery range to fit scenarios around.
-
Archery Butts!
Great idea, Kev!
Do it, Bibbles!
:D

It was already on page one from the start ;D
Mini BLAM would be good :)
I didn't think we had grape vines over here but as it is Hollywood I'm sure no-one will mind lol
cheers
James

Grape vines were around as the climate was a few degrees warmer back then. They even grew oranges on the south coast in the 11th C.
-
Orange trees as well eh?
Is a mans work never done lol
cheers
James
-
No, now get on with it! :D

Kev: You know too much!
Unless you just happen to be a Time Lord as well...... ;)
-
No, just an Immortal. I have the Katana to prove it!

There can be only one. :D
-
Those are very nice terrain bases. Orange trees and grape vines next - hmm, I'm looking forward to those immensely.
Do you have a complete list of where you got all your figures and shop-bought pieces from? That would be most useful if it could be found in one place.
-
All the figures so far are Crusader (soldiers) with a few Foundry (peasants) and a couple of Perrys (priests).
The only 'bits' I've used are for the table base on the scatter terrain, so far. I've got more in a box waiting to get used :)
No orange trees or vines today, just a couple of signs to the various locales... ;)

The crow is a plastic GW one.

Very nice. The devil's in the details. :)
I new a girl once from Lower Snatch...

:-*
James, the cheerful hollywood grass and lush vegetation are beautiful. Nice atmosphere your making there.
Cheers

Nice little and useful mood building scatter pieces :-*
So if those were placed in the crossroads, would that place be then Middle Snatch-Corfe? :)
-
We have a local vineyard or two here in sunny (not) West Wales even nowadays!
-
Found this in a box after tidying up after Colours today. It's been in this condition for about four years but now seems like a good time to dust it off and finish it for Nottingham :)

There'll be some steps up to the front door and the upper floor and roof are removable.

I've also got a slightly smaller one that'll do nicely :)
cheers
James

Best daub it up ;)

Looking good Jim....
PS Dont know know if you are aware but Warbases sell Archery butts for £1 - I bought some for my own games.
I expect you will probably make your own out of a coil of twisted string....
cheers
-
Ace! I wish I had 'forgotten' stuff like that sitting in my cupboard!!
-
is that Dewbies house? A Salutation Inn sign would'nt look out of place
-
...oooooh, a conservatory...! ;)
Seriously, highly inspiring stuff you have stashed away in some boxes. Look forward to see the progress.
-
Nice. Presumably that impressive dwelling will sit inside the castle walls? Or alongside the walled garden?
-
Thanks chaps :)
Giles, I'm assuming they are MDF? I'll be making our own anyway ;)
Svennnnnnn, what's a Dewbie ???
cheers
James

Where is the new gaming building going....?

I had the Georgian buildings behind knocked down, they spoilt the atmosphere.

You could've knocked down the shit 60's concrete shite off to the left instead ::)

That's a college, if I'd knocked that down I'd have had all the loser students getting in the way of the build.
-
lol lol
-
This is some serious terrain work. I really like that!
-
Great stuff. You should consider doing this for a living ;)
