Because Captain Blood won't let me paint them open..... he frowns upon it!  lol

Seriously though, thanks for the question.

I used to paint eyes, rather poorly as it happens, as I was convinced that they were absolutely necessary for 'character'.  Then I followed a CB painting tutorial and realised that, when I looked at my minis on the table, there were a whole load of eyes standing out and staring at me in a way that was so disproportionate it detracted from the overall effect.  When I started my Aliens project I changed my painting style and adopted closed eyes, as I think this is what most open eyes look like when viewed from above, which is the most common tabletop perspective.

In terms of gaming figures I think that Bugsda probably gets the best effect - his eyes do tend to look hooded, with a micro-corner-glint of white that is not too bright.  If I am ever able to develop my abilities to Bugsda's level then I might just start painting eyes again.
