Title: Denny's Rocketship
Post by: Auton on January 28, 2008, 08:07:44 PM
A while ago PeteMurray very graciously offered some drinks cups from Denny's to forum members here. I was lucky enough to get my pm off quick enough for one and it arrived not long after.

Scroll on 6 months  :freak:  and following another decision I decided to 'get it sorted' So, for those interested, here's the process...

Step one was to file some of the extra lid details down, drill a hole into the end & insert a nose spike (also know as a golf tee!)

Step two, cut out a pair of doors & window frames from .30 plastic card for detailing the body and stick them on with superglue

Step three, taking some plastic tubing, cut lots of 10mm lengths, then superglue them around the body as rocket ports. Once finished have a strong drink to settle the nerves!

Step four, cut front windows frame from plastic card. This needs to carefully curved to apply it to the rounded surface

Step five, wing stubs. Taking a rounded slide binder (used to hold papers together), cut two 25mm lengths, glue the open edge together then cut end pieces and stick them on the outer ends (inner ends will stick to hull)

Step six, all construction complete, paint. I decided on the classic silver scheme, spray with a can of Tamiya silver for polycarbonate (to make sure it covers the plastic ok) Next paint in windows & edge doors etc

Final ship next to figure for scale

I finally gloss varnished the ship to protect the paintwork as I wasn't sure how the paint would hold onto the plastic cup surface

Once again, thanks Pete for the cup!

Fantastic my friend, a deceptively simple yet tremendously effective result. Really nicely explained too.

Thanks a bunch, Auton. Your conversion looks great!

I have something similar in mind, but I only have the newer-model Denny's Rocket Cup to work with seen here:

I prefer your older version as it has a much more baroque Flash Gordon look to it.

By the way, what is the diameter of your rocket tubing?

Jeez-o-man, you're like goddang Macguyver. Some plastic and a junk drawer and he's off. The gibbon loves it. Doing up those rocket ports was an act of iron will. Great Stuff!

Perhaps you could use the nose cone at least for something like this:

It is a proposal of Wernher von Braun for a 1949 Mars Rocket.
Are those newer Rocket cups still around? I could use one, but we have no Denny's here in Germany.

Brilliant Auton, I love it. :D  How many fingers did you manage to superglue together during the construction? It looked mightly fiddly

Cheers for the comments guys  :)

I almost glued some fingers lol The plastic of the cup actually took the glue quite well which was what I was worried about

You must thank God every day for this.

Nicely done, Auton. Mine's still languishing in primer, having lost its nose cone (I swiped a ear-looker-cover-thingy from the pediatrician's office the last time we had the kids in there. Then it fell off. Now it's gone.)

I can pick one up for you (although I'm sure the cost of shipping it to Germany will be much more than the cost of the cup itself...).

Pete, I've got a spare newer-model nose cone (as I have attached two cups end-to-end to make a more elongated cigar-shaped craft). You can have it if you like.

Just checked, the tubing is 1/8" / 3.2mm styrene tubing from Plastruct. It took two lengths to cut enough pieces, with some spares left over afterwards

Thanks Heldrak, that's a very nice offer, but I'll probably fish up a golf tee or something. Incidentally, if you are shipping it overseas, you can send it letter rate since an empty cup hardly weighs a thing. It's much cheaper than parcel and just as fast. You might want to call it something inoccuous so as not to attract the attention of snooping customs agents.

I hear "Religious Goods" works well.

Trencher, I'm sorry, but LOLenschmertz is only a small taste of what Denny's can do to you.

I've got 4 of these cups and have not touched them yet.

Is there anyway someone could the the door & windows patterns from you?
