Title: Looking to start playing 3rd edition WFB. What size forces do I need?
Post by: Mason on May 01, 2012, 11:50:34 PM
OK, I have to admit that I have a hankering to do some 3rd edition, and have now got my grubby mitts on the army lists.
I have to admit that, for me, it is the nostalgia element (I really got into gaming during this period) that does it for me.
Not being interested in the 'tournament' mindset any longer, I gave that up quite some time ago, now I just game for fun.
3rd seems perfect for what I want to do.
My main question are:
What is the best size of force, points wise, for collecting and playing? (I would rather collect a few forces than one large one.)
Would 1000pts be too small, should I be looking at at least 1500pts?

Any advice from those of you already playing it would be appreciated.

I would shoot for 1500 pts as a good base force.  Then it's easily expandable to 2000 if you want a bigger battle.  3000 makes for a fairly large battle in 3e.  I like units of 20 for regular infantry blocks (30 for hobos and skaven) and 12-16 for the shooty types...10 for cav.

Hope that helps

You could go with 1000 straight off as 3rd ed gives more of a warband feel to it (I reckon so anyway) and if you want to get more forces together and add to them later as Blue suggests it'll be an easier start with 1000.

My copy is sitting on the shelf waiting for me to pick it up again  lol

On second thoughtbim with Jim...1000 is a good place to start...if you want bigger battles than have a 4 war band game.

Most of the big games I played when third edition was new new had good armies with a mix of human, elf, dwarf, halfling armies versus the forces of chaos...chaos warriors, orcs and goblins, shaven, dark elves etc all mixed together...made it a lot of fun.

Cheers,

Blue

We did this as well, just put whatever people had onto the table and spit it into good and evil  :)

Good times  :D

Thanks for all the advice, Gentlemen!

Ironically, I had 2nd and 3rd as a teenager, but never really played.
The bug has never really gone away.
Later editions have put me off, but 3rd is still bugging me.
Good to know that I am not alone.
In fact, it is the various threads on here concerning 3rd that have resurrected the urge.

Ooooh!
Slaves to Darkness?
Chaos warbands?
I shall be in touch. Soon!

(P.S. It wont be until later on in the year. I have to finish the S.A project (two months) and then I shall get on to the VSF. (Promise!)
Gives me plenty of time to put a force/warband together)

Looks like you lot have gone and done it again!
