Title: A World Aflame
Post by: Paul @ Empress Miniatures on May 16, 2012, 09:04:07 AM

We have put Osprey Publishing's new inter-bellum rules, A World Aflame, as a pre-order in our shop. These excellent rules (yes, we've been playtesting them) are ideally suited to many of our ranges - especially the Spanish Civil War and Italy in Abyssinia.

We are doing a special deal with these rules. Each set will come with a free pack of inter-war figures! We will make the choice as to the pack, but we guarantee that they will especially suitable for the rules. People buying multiple copies will get different packs and we will aim to supply some of the more unusual troop types that some of you might not already have in your collections.

Over to Osprey for the full run-down:

About this book
Often called the "Pulp Era", the years between the two World Wars have seen a tremendous surge in interest among wargamers. A World Aflame captures the adventurous nature of the time period to present a fun, fast-paced set of tabletop miniatures rules that can handle the many diverse conflicts of the period, from the Chinese Civil Wars and the "Great Game" in Central Asia, to the Irish War of Independence and the bitter ideological warfare of the Russian and Spanish Civil Wars. The rules also contain options for the "Very British Civil War". This gaming trend has sprung up in recent years, following a "what-if" scenario that has Edward VIII refusing to abdicate the throne, thrusting the country into civil war in 1938. It is a quirky, fun setting, and one that is surprisingly popular. Written by a life-long wargamer, A World Aflame focuses on the daring and heroism of battles fought in the last great era of adventure.

Empress store shows as "in stock", so I've ordered a copy - strange as it's not meant to be out until August....

Hi,

You are correct it is not released until August. We are currently doing pre orders, as stated.

The term 'in stock' is simply computer jargon to allow a pre order in the shop.

If this is a problem e mail us and we will issue a credit.  ;)

Regards,
Paul

Could you tell me more about unit/force size?

Could you tell me more about unit/force size?

Infantry units are generally 8 (for militia types) to 10 (for army and police and whatnot), but it's not a hard and fast rule (you can use different amounts based on scenarios, figure availability etc). Bear in mind, it's not a codex, so if you have 23 militia miniatures and a preacher with a shotgun, you can play with that!

The sample scenario in the book features 37 figures versus 76 and 2 HMGs in it's first game, with additional troops becoming available as reinforcements in games 2 and 3.

Cracking service from Empress Miniatures. It was my first order &, although it was only a small one, it was a real pleasure to do business with you, sir. I shall definitely be back for more.

I didn't actually realise you were the author too. Well done, that man. Cracking set of rules. Tea & crumpets all round, me thinks.

Will you put the Q&A and the other list as pdf to your website? It would be better for my book.

I have it, and I love it. Production quality is high, and the ammo rules are excellent- can't wait to try it out.

I wish it had some sort of point base system in there, but I can live with out it though.

One minor grip- no rules for anti-tank rifles and tankettes- both features of inter-war conflict.

There should be as they were both in the listings. I have not got a copy to hand to check so cannot confirm, however in my original writing they are there.

AT Rifle should be at the top of the AT weapons list.

Tankettes are covered by the national lists of vehicles. eg Cardon Lloyd, CV33, etc

Ok - so what is it offering? What's it bringing new to the party?  :)

I second the request for a quick reference sheet. The downside to the Osprey book format means it is awkward to photocopy the tables etc. (& I'm far too lazy to type it all)

I guess, from its previous incarnation, 'fun', which is often sadly lacking in some rule sets.  ;)

I think that's more to do with who you game with rather than the rules ...  ;)

I was wondering what makes it different from other rulesets

It's got a rather nice system for running out and re-supplying ammo which I think fits in well with the setting. There is also rules for tackling tanks with crow bars and Molotovs which I rather like. I hasn't seen the initiative system before either, which is rather elegant, but I am not familiar with many historic wargaming rules so may be that's not that innovative.

Not always, I played with WRG Ancients rules back in the day and they'd suck the life out of you faster than Dracula supping on a virgin, no matter who you were playing against!

 ;)

I feel a bit like one of the blind men describing an elephant, as I haven't seen the current rules, just the older freebie Empress had on their site. They don't so much add anything, but reintroduce some quite old concepts. IIRC Paul based them on the old 'Charge' rules, with considerable additions. While you couldn't say they were by any means a simulation, they gave a good game, to which, as you say, with the right opponent(s), could give a few hours of good 'old timee' fun. Sure there were more holes in the rules than in Emmental cheese, but that's not all that important to some folk.

I'm sure the rules have been edited and polished since then, nice pictures added and what not, so I'd guess they are a bargain at their price. Expect (and correct me folks if I'm wrong) I Go - You Go turn sequence, movement, shooting, hand to hand and morale, some quite simple and straightforward vehicle, aircraft and artillery rules, and some guidance on formations and organisation... and I'm guessing the use of average dice somewhere along the line.

I've yet to hear a bad word said about them, which is always a recommendation to me...

 :D
