Here on Perilous Island we’ve been in the process of making new gaming terrain. Originally Dad was going to build it as a single piece of terrain but it would be more flexible as two separate pieces. First we had to actually cut the Styrofoam with a Styrofoam cutter. Then we stack it all together using toothpicks. Dad made the two formations stackable in case we want to make things a little more perilous :D

"A lot of molehills become mountains when someone adds a little dirt."

You are off to a good start.
Look forward to seeing how it turns out.

"A lot of molehills become mountains when someone adds a little dirt."
I blame the Welsh. They're always causing trouble like that.
-
Cool, Maybe do a scenario where you go vertical instead of horizontal on the gaming board, maybe the goal could be inside a small cave at the top, a real cliffhanger so to speak hehe.
nice work
-
Looks like a great start, I am curious as to which method you will use to texture it. :)
-
These hills are looking good and are quite inspirational. As i am in the process of making a modular jungle, good ideas are always wellcome and a couple of good steep hills are just what i need. Perhaps you can show some pics of the finished scenery later on?

In the middle of this picture there is a little white model Dad put together. This model helped us plan the general shape of the two terrain pieces but we added a lot of extra detail including a cave of the second level.
We worked on the hill on the left first shaping the Styrofoam by cutting it up and making it look rough. We didn’t actually glue any of the levels together, so we could pull it apart and shape it easier. After that we added two layers of texture goo. I think it's turning out really nicely :D

More pictures to come....

Wolf Girl,
May I ask, what is texture goo?
Is it something one can buy, or did you make it?

May I ask, what is texture goo?
Mila is currently leading an expedition to Texas, so I’ll answer this one for her.
We’re experimenting with a new “texture goo” we found at our local Lowe’s store. Specifically, it is called “Deck Restore”, and cost about $25 for 1 gallon. As it’s intended use is a liquid armor resurfacer for decks and patios, I think it should survive our rugged pulp gaming. They can mix up the color you want at the store - and it’s water-based! :D
She’ll be back and post some new pics by next weekend.
HAVE FUN!

Nice "texture goo".
A lot of my foam terrain gets beaten up really easy during boxing and unboxing alone.
This sounds like it will be sturdy.
-
Dave, Thanks for the reply.
Will head over to Lowes and check it out.
-
Dave once created a Hill that survived pre-teen 40k players, this piece may survive longer than cockroaches.
Looks great, Dave and Pulpgirl. The texture looks fantastic.
-
Very nice looking..
I'll have to attempt that in the cheap white foam stuff. :)
-
Coming along nicely, can't wait to see it used in a game!
-
Hmmm, texture goo. That could prove useful :)

Hey guys, I survived the trip to Texas! I had a lot of fun while I was there and got to visit with some family.
Here’s another picture of the hills we’re working on. The one on the left has about 2 ½ coats of texture goo. After that Dad added some flat goo to the horizontal surfaces of the terrain. This made it turn out really cool. Now it’s ready for some additional weathering/colors.
The hill on the right already has its first layer of texture goo. Comparing it with the one on the left you can really tell what a difference the extra layers make.
That’s me in the background playing the cello. Dad likes it when I play the Godfather Theme while he works on his projects. He says it provides the appropriate mad scientist atmosphere.

We’re already working on the next step, so there will be more to come soon! :D

Here you can see that we added the colorization to the piece on the left. There were several layers of different colors and a wash. Next we will be adding the foliage. :D
You can also see what the flat goo looks like when it’s on the terrain. (The flat goo is Elmer’s Wood Filler) We apply it with a painter’s knife and spread it over the surface. There are some spots on the horizontal surfaces we leave rough for variation
I think they will be really fun in play. The layers match up really well so you can jump between the two rocks.

Your hills look very good.
I am in a hill making mood right now.
Here's a thread of some stuff I made.
http://leadadventureforum.com/index.php?topic=42264.0
Lots of good ideas in your thread.
I will have to try some of them out.
Thanks for sharing.
-
Fun. The "stepped" piece in particular should cause some interesting Line of Sight effects.
-
I'm liking those mole-hils. :)
I blame the Welsh. They're always causing trouble like that.
>:D

Here are a couple pics of the hills we’ve been working on. We may eventually add some more foliage, grass, and details, but for now we’re considering them finished....

THANKS!

Really like how they turned out.
They match with your terrain very well.
-
Amazing as always, Dave and Mila.
One of these days, you will have to tell me how you did your old pieces of 40k terrain. I still haven't figured it out after all these years.

Wow!
That's really good. :-*

Great, would also have to steal this idea, sorry. :D
Keep it up.

What he said.
This is a great idea, well executed. I may just try and build one of my own. Thanks for sharing!

Great, unfortunately, has to steal this idea.
Has become my English is not the best, as I once again must be horrified ellen, promise only to use a translator to anyone anymore these embarrassments (what a shame) decipher, forgiveness.

Some great scenery there. Lovely project from start to finish. :)

Kelly Moore paint store has KEL SEAL brushble and trowlable caulking in a tub, runs 31$ a gallong, sometimes its in quarts. Both smooth and textured.
I Know that Bengamin Moore paint store also carries their own version of the smooth and textured caulking in a tub or can, I forget at the moment.

@luidinuovo
When I wrote "What he said", I was agreeing with you. I did not consider that the expression I used would not be clear to someone that is not a native English speaker, and I apologize for the confusion. Your English is understandable; you have no reason to apologize.

@mpennock
Ok, then there's my southern blood (suffer some Southern Europeans :D ) got the better of me.

Here’s a quick update on how our new board is coming along. Fresh with some new foliage, and some accompanying terrain bits.…
Can you help Pulp Girl find the 13 missing skulls? :D

Very cool! :-*
The foliage really changes the feel of the rocky terrain.
-
Found them! lol. Your sceneries are very nice. I love the idea of the small burial cave at the top of the hill.
-
Here's a link to a desert matt I made using the textured goo.....

After a second look I found them. :)
Like the plants. Looks great.

The Mole Hills are magnificent. I congratulate you.
