Title: What paint Brand do you suggest
Post by: Bubbles on May 28, 2012, 01:28:40 PM
Im gonna paint up some SOTR yanks and Im also paitin up some Orks but I don't know what paints I should use because I hear good things about Vallejo but GW paints are the closest to me but at 6 bucks a bottle its a little steep. so what do you think. Also where is the best place to by carrying cases for my armies.

Vallejo is a definite for painting, Army Painter for spraying. Maybe KR multicase, or ebay for the cases.

I've got a Feldherr figure bag and a cardboard case from KR.
I have to say that I saw the Figures in Comfort trays at Salute and they lookedmore suited for big/heavy items due to the thick rubber bottom layer whereas Feldherr and KR use a fine foam layer.

For paint...Vallejo...no question the best paint I've used...with the most complete selection of colors.

For army carrying....I use shoe boxes... ;D

Cheers,

Craft store paints if price is an issue. I use quite a few, and use the priceier stuff only for the odd color that I can't get right in crafts, mostly metallics.

The previous version (not the new lot)of GW Tinbitz and Chainmail for metallics, Vallejo for otehr colours.

If Bugsda sees this thread he may advise you on some other craft paints but I cannot remember the name. - EDIT: Palmer Prism made in the USA so when I get to the States for Historicon I will load up.

Mount figures on magnetic bases - steel washer - and then line a A4 Lever Arch box -with the lever arch removed - with magnetic tape - should be available from Staples or similar.

For my 25mm armies that use element basing I use cut down Banker Boxes ad stick 1/4 squre wood dividers across the bottom at base depth apart.

If you are based in the US of A then what about reaper paints? or privateer press paints?

Have you tried artist acrylics?  they need thinning (with water) and you need to make sure they have good light fast properties (so they don't fade) but they are a good investment in the long run for the amount you get.

Nah I don't live in the USA I live in Australia. But I was wondering with such a close proximity to new zealand should I order from Flames of war. It sort of kills two birds with one stone gets my SOTR yank colours and my future FoW yank colours at the same time. Are the flames of war Vallejo called the same thing as regular Vallejo colours or are they renamed.

The FoW paints used to come from Valejo, not sure if they still do, however they are great, and picked to suit the various nations uniform colours. Artizan have a nice painting guide for WWII on their site, and give the Valjeo corresponding numbers.

I use Feldherr miniature bags, they look great and are very useful and I am most satisfied with them. I also use Reaper and P3 colours, very nice all of them.

The FoW paints are still Vallejo MC, and have the same names.
