Title: Lake Placid or Lake Wobegone?
Post by: fastolfrus on June 02, 2012, 06:06:32 PM
The school club are gearing up for an 1812 encounter, starting with something amphibious.
They don't want a straight historical scenario, and only have small forces available  (especially boats), so are opting for a semi-fictional approach (composite of several historic actions from 1813-14 on a fictional map).
Our question is, what lake to choose (hence the title) as our fictional setting:
Lake Placid 1812
or
Lake Wobegone 1812?

Wobegone. Do you even need to ask?

I'm with you 100% on that one.

They need to ask.
And who would argue with a committee of teenage boys?

Looks like we'll use the order of battle from Queenston Heights, but with British attacking and Americans defending.
We'll start with Brock leading a first wave of 50 against 60 US regulars & militia.

British reinforcements at Queenston will appear as successive waves of boats on the shoreline, US will get reinforcements based on their original attacks, although they'll also get the additional (reluctant) New York militia that refused to cross the river in 1812.

Lake Wobegone, where all the women are strong, all the men are good looking and all the children are above average.

Brought to you by Hank's pretty good grocery, "We've got everything you need, If we don't have it, you don't need it."

Don't suppose anyone has some 28mm US flags as PDFs?
Or a suggested supplier of printed flags for 1812?

For anyone visiting the Scarborough show this weekend, Lake Wobegon will be seen just in front of the Old Glory stand.
Stop by and say hello.

Now I've just got 110 American militia to try and base before breakfast....

If the walls are duck egg blue will you be painting the ceiling in camo colours with RAF roundels?

There are some pics from the show here:

There wasn't a specific naval aspect but we did have boats - it was a river crossing, so attackers started on the river bank.
We used the boats as scenery/staging area for reinforcements coming in/casualties going off etc.
We might get around to actual naval fighting on the next one.
