Title: Anatoli's Empire of the Dead thread 23/11/2013
Post by: Anatoli on June 06, 2012, 11:02:19 AM
Will be posting a lot of Empire of the Dead over the next couple of week so I thought I would start a new thread where I will gather them all rather than making separate posts for each miniature.

First up is the leader of the Nosferatu clan for Empire of the Dead. Miniature is from the new EotD Nosferatu boxed set.

Do continue!

VERY WELL DONE...in an evil sort of way! Beyond some very nice brushwork & basing, you've captured the dark character of the piece. I like the black finger nails...nice touch.

Thanks guys, the consort ended up looking a lot more evil and blood crazed - will post pictures of her tomorrow  :)

Very nice. As always you put so much of the atmosphere into your miniatures.

Looking forward to the consort. She is my favorite figure of the lot.

Thanks again for the kind comments guys  :)

The Consort is the second type of Vampire which can be included in your Nosferatu list. Slightly weaker than the Graf but still a formidable foe. Consorts don't have to be female, and you can upgrade your Thrall's to a consort if you are lucky with the post game ladvancement/skill rolls.

Very good, I think I prefer this miniature to the Graf.  ;D

There is something about the sword on the Graf I am not keen on. Personally I prefer to see Vampire miniatures without weapons,  I always imagine a Vampire not needing to use a weapon to defeat mortals in Hand to Hand combat.

Great Stuff!

I can see the "no weapon" Logic - but Westwind are thinking ahead a little, like Anatoli before - it could be a Possessed Sword quite happily!

Its for the Lycan in the woodshed.

I would also like to see vampires have the option of buying the "Teeth and Claws" weapon

WONDERFULLY EVIL LOOKING creations. I enjoy your brushwork...the wood grain on the musketoon is remarkable..& basing. VERY WELL DONE!

On the Vampires with weapons question: while they might not need them, the weapons do make for a neater kill...with the Lady Vamp, it removes the risk of breaking a nail.

It's made by West Wind for EotD, and comes in the Vampire starter box. ;)

Because of various reasons I have not really painted much over the last week, but as more projects grow and expand I pushed myself to get a grip on what Empire of the Dead miniatures I had left. So I started painting the Victorian Zombie box and finished 5 of them in one sitting, next 5 will be done tomorrow.

More pictures of each individual zombie can be found on my blog:

Are you not tempted to try EotD in the 18th C., as you did with Strange Aeons?
Foundry 'Revenant Elves' (specially the female) would easily make great 18th C. vampires.

Not at the moment, EotD is a bit more strict when it comes to miniatures and I have a larger collection of miniatures that would pass for 19th century than 18th century in this regard. But I don't think swapping back a century or two would pose any problem for the rules. it would however require some work to rewrite the existing special weapons that are very Steam Punk'ish.

Let's hope, wait and see, then...
Since I come from (quasi: Hyboria &c...) 'historical' gaming, the concept of a 'compulsory' association between a setting, a set of rules and a range of miniatures looks quite 'strange' for me (if a neat marketing trick  :D)
As for weapons, could not the stats of 'steampunk' ones be used for odd 'lacepunk' ones?

Been super busy writing my OOB book for Flames of War the past 6 weeks, but with that finished yesterday I should have more spare time to dedicate on painting.
This is the limited edition Professor Erazmus for Empire of the Dead, really great sculpt. You can either use him as the character he is, or as a Gentlemen's Club secretary "hero" character. I used him as a regular Gentlemen's Club "Secretary" in my game last weekend.

Awesome paint job. I have the figure but haven't really even looked that closely at it. Too much stuff to paint and not enough time/skill to make it happen.

I also agree with the abdul, there's a lot of possibilities in that batch of minis for some cool vampire conversions.

Well I'm torn between half a dozen projects myself at the time so painting on the last couple of EotD miniatures goes painfully slow.

Here is the other Limited Edition miniature, the butler type - which I imagine is actually one of the "Infernium" powered servants that are hinted on in the main rulebook. There are no rules for him yet, so you could either use him as a regular "Membership" for your Gentlemen's Club, a member of the "public" (civilians walking about on the streets - or why not at the Gent. Club?).

As I often have problems with painting black, I wanted to try something different for the butler suit. I also painted the eyes completely blue to make him stand out as “not quite human”.

Shamed myself into getting started with the Gentlemen's club miniatures which have been sitting on my desk for what seems forever. Truth to be told I wasn't inspired enough to paint them and I tried to come up with ideas on colors and such. As it turns out that solved itself once I started painting. Now it's full steam ahead and I will probably be done with the whole gang next week :-)

First "membership" painted up. More pictures on my blog:

Thanks for the kind words guys  :)

Another "regular" member, but sporting a pistol/cavalry saber combo. This model almost killed me as I repainted the jacket 5 times, it's probably covered in 20 layers of paint at this point. Initially I wanted a dark brown jacket to make a greater contrast to the cape, but I just could not make it look the way I wanted so it ended up grey/khaki.

I also wrote down a mini guide to how I paint the flesh on the Gentlemen's Club miniatures as I have been trying out a new idea. The mini guide and more pictures of the model on my blog:

Very nice! Tell us more about the blue flowers

Regular green clump foliage painted a small brush. First dot the entire bush in a basecoat color then apply a highlight. In this case I dotted the clump foliage with Vallejo Imperial Blue and highlighted the dots with a second layer of Imperial blue+white. It's very simple to do  :)

Back when I ordered my sets (as in everything Westwind had for EotD at release), I was hoping to paint them all before the end of the year. At this point, I've not even started...and here you are hammering out great paint work after another. When you're finished this box, I'd be really interested to see a shot of all the EotD figures you've done.

Oh and if you hadn't reviewed the game in the first place, I would never have bought any of it. I blame you...so Van Helsing is off the hook for this one. :P

And here's the Vice President of the Gentlemen's Club.

I wasn't certain how to paint him, he looked like some kind of "superhero/avenger" with that mask and cape - almost like a Victorian London Zorro. So I went with an all red color for his clothes, an experiment to see how well it would look to paint a miniature in pretty much a single color. He really needs  a coat of matt varnish so that the layers of red become easier to distinguish.

Last Empire of the Dead miniature in my lead pile, the President of the Gentlemen's Club. Wanted to paint some kind of pattern on his clothes as well, but didn't want geometric shapes. So I did an internet search for "Victorian clothing" and came up with a pretty cool jacket which I tried to replicate. This is also why I prefer miniatures that aren't cluttered with tons of objects, makes it possible to paint stuff like this. The miniature itself is also very cool, eyepatch and vampire slaying kit thrown over the shoulder.

I'm thinking about whether or not wash the coat with a ochre wash to tone it down a notch and make it closer to the real clothing I used for inspiration, hmm...

More pictures of this guy and a group picture of the whole Gentlemen's Club on my blog:

Started painting some London civilians from West Wind for Empire of the Dead, to fill our tables with more innocent bystanders and make them feel more alive. I have not really had the urge to paint over the last couple of weeks since there was a lot of other things on my mind and stuff to do, but once I started I got back into the flow. More civilians will follow.
Here is a dancing monkey-music box miniature that I really like. More pictures on my blog.

That's a huge improvement, it's hard to believe all it took was a couple washes.

I thought about putting them on separate bases too, mainly because I didn't think they would fit onto one base. But when they did it seemed natural to have them sharing one  :)

Haha thanks, it's funny how easy that flower coat was to achieve. Painting random patterns so that they resemble leafs or flowers. Highlight them randomly and then wash it. If I find another miniature with a large coat I will make a tutorial for it.

These miniatures were previously painted up for Malifaux, but since I don't play that game much these days I painted over the Malifaux unit names on the base and fixed the miniatures so that I can use them for Empire if the Dead instead. For instance the "ladies of the night" have been repainted so that they no longer have slit throats and look undead. Other minor things that have been changed are a decent matt varnish coat on a few of the miniatures that were previously still suffering from overly glossy finish that I never could get rid of.

A few more pictures of other miniatures can be seen over at my blog:

Thanks, I can't describe how happy I am to actually have a matt varnish that works. Currently using "The Army Painter Warpaints - Anti Shine" brush on varnish which comes in a 18ml bottle. I'm so pleased that I ordered another bottle since I have used up half of the current one already.

The only thing that worries me is if the delivery to my mailbox will happen on a really cold day which could affect the varnish badly. I once ordered another brand in one of those P3 Formula paint jars but the varnish had been all messed up and looked/had the consistency of something resembling frosting on a cake - completely useless...

I received my Empire of the Dead: Requiem Kickstarter parcel yesterday, so the blog will shift back one of my favorite genres - "Gothic Horror" for the next few weeks in terms of models and painting.

Starting with the Clickers, this is one of the most anticipated factions, and one of two addon factions, that I pledged for in the Empire of the Dead: Requiem Kickstarter. The Clickers are "Infernium" powered clockwork robots, their existence was hinted at in the core rulebook with a poster of a "clockwork servant".

I love this faction, there are many surprises here, even though they resemble the artwork. What is most striking is the "robot-zombie"/"Victorian Terminator" look of  the humanoid robots. 4 out of 5 are dressed in torn clothes. Then you get 3 insect like Clickers, two flying and one large spider like walker.

They are just super cool and as you may suspect - will be the first couple of miniatures to be painted. For those assembling the insect like Clickers, have some patience as they are a bit fiddly. Everything comes with cast pins and holes to allow solid assembly, but you need to shorten the cast pins to make everything fit.

Check my blog for more pictures of the assembled Clickers miniatures and a sneak peak at the resin bases and laser cut tokens: http://anatolisgameroom.blogspot.se/2013/09/the-clickers-wip-from-eotd-requiem.html

Looking very good. I am patiently awaiting my box of goodies. (I pledged at a higher level, so know I have a little bit longer to go before seeing mine.)

I didn't order the Clickers, not sure why, but they look good, especially the insect like one shown here ;D

Can't wait to see how you paint it :)

The clickers are probably one of the only things I didn't pledge for in the KS, because to me the concept just seems too advanced and not victorian enough, but those humanoid ones are growing on me, might have to see them painted before final judgment on them. :)

First two Clickers painted up, I'm focusing on the Clickers that are "bare metal" at the moment since I'm still waiting for my paintbrushes to arrive (I hope they will arrive today). I also specifically chose to paint these two up because the walker and the flyers are the most complex miniatures in the faction - the "robot-zombies" will be much easier to paint and are smaller.

You can see more pictures of both miniatures over at my blog:

I painted up the last 4 Clickers yesterday, I had a head start on them since I finished all the metal areas earlier during the weekend while waiting for my Kolinsky brushes to arrive (they arrived this Monday YAY!).

Anyway, with these the Clicker faction is completely painted up. I had a great time painting them and love the miniatures. They have given me plenty of ideas for a Victorian take on "Terminator" will see if I do something with it.

More pictures of the Clickers on my blog (last 4 Clickers, along with a picture of the entire faction and a picture showing the degradation of the Clicker "infiltrator", from factory ready servant with synthetic skin to bare metal).

Thank you!  :)

Spent yesterday assembling and sculpting/converting a little on the Bedlam Brotherhood and the limited edition Nadezhda Durova mini. First of all I had bought the resin cobblestone bases specifically for the Bedlam Brotherhood and knew I would have to pin the models to the bases somehow. I did not have a pin vice, and they had been sold out in the brick and mortar store last time I checked so I was weighing my options when I remembered my dad has a power drill - going through his collection of drill heads I found one that was just slightly thicker than a paper clip. Amazingly enough it was both simple and fast drilling holes with the power drill, though you have to be very careful and drill slowly.

With the maniacs from the Bedlam Brotherhood Based, I resorted to re-sculpt the hair on Alice since I liked how she looked on the artwork - and while I was in sculpting/converting mode I also grabbed the Nadezhda Durova miniature and re-sculpted her the way I had imagined since I first saw the miniature on the Kickstarter page.

More pictures of both the Bedlam Brotherhood and Nadezhda Durova can be seen on my blog:

First character from the Bedlam Brotherhood painted up, been looking forward to painting Alice since I saw the artwork back during the Kickstarter. As she is the centerpiece of the Bedlam Brotherhood gang and probably the most complex and time consuming miniature to paint I began with her.  I'm confident the rest of the gang of murderous crazies will look great with her standing in the middle.

I tried out my idea of "crayon graffiti" on the asylum floor bases, I will make personalized doodles for each asylum inmate and in different colors to make the bases a bit more interesting.

Latest additions to the Bedlam Brotherhood, these go by the nicknames "Tank" and "Hat-man" on the kickstarter art.

Being big and bulky I figure they have a more prominent role within the faction than the smaller lunatics.

More pictures of these two, as well as a group picture of all my painted up lunatics ( I still have 3 Bedlam Brotherhood minis left to paint). I also wrote down a few speculations/predictions and ideas for the Bedlam Brotherhood and how they could work as a new faction in Empire of the Dead.

This is my heavily converted version of the Nadezhda Durova limited edition miniature that you get with the Requiem Kickstarter for Empire of the Dead. I wanted a more dynamic and combat ready pose, a slightly smaller pistol and I also wanted the hair to be closer to what it looks like on the artwork. So there was some chopping, greenstuffing and a weapon swap (from the EotD weapon sprue).

This is probably the first time I've made such extensive conversion work on a metal miniature, and I'm pretty pleased with both the conversion and the paintjob. I painted the model to match the artwork since I liked the colors.

More pictures of the painted model, and some WIP's over at my blog:

Now, being partial to Lacepunk, I feel that with a different pistol she would become a great 18th C. Hussarette (http://notjustoldschool.blogspot.fr/search/label/Hussarettes).

Just a quick paintjob of the "Invisible man" miniature from the Empire of the Dead kickstarter range. Not much to say really, though I did have a hard time figuring out how to paint his clothes. In the end I picked a flower pattern and brown colors for the coat and grey pants and hat for contrast.

I will have a slightly longer weekend this week which hopefully means that I will be able to paint up both Lightning Jack and Tom Gaunt - love both minis!

I don't know if this is an original character or some obscure character from a book/comic - but I liked the sculpt and while I was painting it struck me that he would be perfect to use as a Victorian edition of Simon Belmont from the Castlevania games. The idea instantly sparked a Castlevania scenario with Gentlemen fighting to liberate a Vampire and zombie infested eastern European village. If I get around to run a demo of Empire of the Dead at a convention I will have to make sure to use that idea.
