Well, I've finally made a start on the Boxer building range that I've had on the drawing board for about a year, if not longer.
There will be a more complete selection of buildings before they go on the website but I'll use this thread for progress updates etc.
I'll be making ruined versions of most of the buildings and walls but for starters I've got a generic Chinese house and wall section
The house - 100mm long, 70mm wide and 73mm high
(http://i279.photobucket.com/albums/kk138/jimbibbly/Boxer%20buildings/fcc56d8a.jpg)
The wall - 150mm long and 44mm high
(http://i279.photobucket.com/albums/kk138/jimbibbly/Boxer%20buildings/c9f4790d.jpg)
And some comparison shots with a Foundry Imperial Chinese soldier (please excuse the red base)
It'll be a month or so before these get on the site but I've also got the British Ligation entrance on the workbench at the moment but it's a bit big :?
The wall shown is a more generic Chinese one, I'll also be making walls that are more ligation quarter specific along with some (hopefully) recognisable buildings.
The walls of Peking itself... We'll see ;)
cheers
James

Okay if you like that sort of thing, but it doesn't look much like medieval castle.... ;)
-
This is the kind of thing I need for this project :)

Cor - those look really nice! Beautifully crisp and precise work there Sir.
-
Stuff your castle, THIS is where it is at ;D
-
Wasn't there someone decrying the lack of Chinese (rather than Japanese) buildings recently? I hope he finds this thread.
-
Very nice work, as always! There is one detail, though, that jars this occasional China hand's eyes, which is that the tiles look more modern-ish Japanese (sangawarabuki - tiles with integral flat and curved sections) than traditional Chinese in design. Regardless, most people probably won't notice, there could well have been exceptions to the traditional tiling, and the overall effect is great!
-
Looks stunning jimmybob. I really like it!
How did you make the tiles?
Cheers
Andy
-
I always enjoy your posts. Great stuff! Richard
-
That is a very nice building and I always like the way you paint them!
-
Lovely stuff as always. :-*
I've been wanting to do a Chinese Fantasy / Horror theme for a long time and these would be great.
-
Sweet looking buildings.
I started messing with the Boxer Rebellion in the late 1980's.
May have to restart it. lol
-
Thanks very much chaps :)

They're not Japanese, they are actually Mediterranean pantiles but they were the closest thing that I had to the reference photo at the time.
There will be other buildings and walls that have a more recognisable tile to them.

James
-
will there be specialized buildings (inn, pub, laundry, etc.? ) You know, for making a whole town? :)
-
Very nice work
Where did you get the tiles from?
-
Well that's not a bad start is it?
-
Very nice James.
You know Tobi's already made his versions don't you? ;) lol
-
VERY nice...good for BoB or WWII Malaysia/Singapore (of course loads of other things as well).
-
I am very interested in any buildings for this period. Keep up the great work and keep us informed of your progress. Will look forward to getting some in the future perhaps.
-
Up to the usual standard my old chum :-*. As Sepoy said these could be used for quite a few things.
Carry on.
-
These buildings are gorgeous! Bravo!
-
Thanks very much chaps.
I've got another one on the go at the moment but we'll be away on holiday for a bit soon but I'll update when we get back :)
cheers

Well, the second one is done just waiting for its coat of primer before going in the mould later today :)
The figures are from my Japanese Boxer rebellion range.
From the front.

And with the first one and a wip gateway for a size reference.

These will be available at Warfare and should be on the website in a week or two :)

Very nice buildings, very atmospheric of the Period.

Mono Sodium Glutomate, Madison Square Gardens or Michael Schenker Group?
Another lovely little building chap, very nice :-* :-*
I cannot see the WIP gateway though :?
-
Given the topic header I'll let you guess ;)
Here's the picture of the gateway wip, missed it on the first upload ::)

I'm also doing ruined wall sections.
cheers
James

My guess is it would have been "One Night at Budokan" as that combines the essential first two albums along with some classic UFO and was recorded in Japan to boot. You need to steer clear of the Macauley era stuff. ;D ::) ;D ::) ;D ::)
Yes, thats a better pic of the gateway. I can see it much more clearly now - ta :D
-
Beautiful buildings !
-
Very impressive they look wonderful!
I've been wanting to work on a kung fu / horror project for a long time now.
These would be great for it.

That makes no sense whatsoever, but knowing you don't drink I think it must be a bang on the head ;D
I think a game with these will be coming soon ;)

Not to highjack the thread entirely, but when we're on the trail of oriental music I just had to confess that I imagine Svenn as one of the background guitar players for Asia. Don't ask me why I've imagined this (I've done it for the past year or so).
Jim, fantastic building! Is that portal something you've sneaked out of work? :)
-
so these will be available to purchase eventually, right? :-) because these chinese buildings are just what I need :-)
-
Nice! How did you scribe the stones that line the insides of the windows and doorway so neatly?
-
Jim,
Wow! :-* :-* :-* :-*
Yet again I don't know how i missed this thread!? Too much time hanging around in the Medieval section I guess :). There are some real gems here and I wish you well with your Boxer Rebellion ranges of miniatures and terrain.
Slightly OT but what other nations do you plan to represent?
Darrell.
-
Thanks chaps :)
To answer the questions in order...
I'm always sneaking stuff out of work ;D
All the buildings will be available individually as will the walls etc. the catalogue set up will be the same as the Japanese ones on my website.
The scribing is done on the laser (naturally :) ).
As Studio miniatures is also doing the Rebellion it'd be daft to have a repeat of what they doing but I think Chinese will be next followed by either Russians or Austrians.
cheers
James

As there were approx. 415 million of them at the time I think we can handle multiple ranges of Chinese :D

Really nice buildings there. Simple but very well done.

great to see this line continuing and growing!
I wonder whether these could be used for Back of Beyond for places like Tashkent, Kashgar etc?
-
Thanks chaps :)

No reason why not. I will also be making some more run down buildings that are suitable for really rural areas.

Looking Good James.
Are you still on for a release at Warfare.
Cheers
Stu
-
These are fantastic buildings, just what I was looking for my BoB game. I will be scouring your website every day and will order some as soon as they are available. Can't wait.
-
Hopefully going on the site tomorrow or Sunday and I'll be taking stock to Warfare :)
cheers
James
-
Great stuff
Jim, where dd you get the tiling sheets from please?
I have a project planned for BoB; I will use some of your excellent building but have some bigger ones to make and would like to keet the tiling the same
-
Wills plastic sheeting until I get my own sorted.
cheers
James
-
Thanks James
I will order some of your stuff and match

Very nice work, sir! :)

These are finally on the website after a slight delay (Christ, I hate real life sometimes ::) ).

These look very nice indeed - just the job.

Nice work, James! Will you be doing them in 15mm, too?

Thanks chaps :)

Eventually, yes.

James

Nice work, as always! :)
-
Mmm - interesting ...
-
Started a compound using the two buildings and scratch built walls, although the construction method for these walls is pretty much the same as the masters for the walls shown before.
Should get some colour on it before the weekend.
cheers
James
-
Very nice. I'm planning on one just like it :)
-
Just had a quick look at the website.....will you be releasing the walls and the circular gateway James?
-
Just had a quick look at the website.....will you be releasing the walls and the circular gateway James?
Certainly will but the tiling for the circular gateway is causing a small problem that I hope to solve today infact :)
cheers
James
-
Splendid
Thanks James
-
Well, the curved wall tiles are proving more of a problem than I thought but I will succeed :)
I've started on a third building, it's a higher class building than normal and would have been used by village leaders/heads men etc.
Just the one shot for now (using my phone as I'm watching The Last Samurai on the pad :D ) but there should be a ready to mould undercoat on it by Sunday.
cheers
James
-
Lovely work :)
-
Just about done this one now, a few extraneous details to add and we're good to go :)

Inspired by our very own Svennn I'm going to do one or two just with plain brick instead of rendered but finding the right sort of brick might be a problem :?
cheers
James

Very nice James 8)

Cracking work mate

Really nice stuff James

That is looking great, mate!
Seems that you have solved the 'Curved Roof Conundrum'.
:D
Well done, sir!
-
Lookin' good dadio :D
-
WOW! These buildings are really beautiful. Good work James! :-*
-
Those are fantastic. If only I needed Chinese architecture... hold up, I do. January order marked up!
-
Thank you very much chaps, I'm hoping to get a couple more done over the holidays but I've made a start on a mock up of the British Legation entrance.
I think it's a little small but would like to garner the opinions of others before committing to the proper master :)
It's only a mock up so the details aren't 100%
(http://i279.photobucket.com/albums/kk138/jimbibbly/Boxer%20buildings/2E5ED3D6-354A-45A3-B883-874C47453BA5-6118-000007D2FA76CC2D.jpg)
And here is the real thing from I believe the twenties...

James
-
Perhaps a little small, but that's not such a bad ting for a wargames table. Otherwise, splendid!
-
Looking great from here, size is a good compromise.
-
Looking good so far, its hard to judge just by the one photo, perhaps it is a little small, but as Bagovich says its a good compromise.
-
Working from the height of the guy on the left in the photo compared to the figure next to the model, I'd say there's about a head of difference between them. Rough estimate would be that the model as is would be a closer fit for 20mm figures than 25/28mm.
That said, as others have commented, I prefer terrain to be a little on the smaller side, so this is perfect for my purposes.
-
True scale buildings are always too big for wargames purposes I think, so I'd say its fine. Well, really more than fine of course... ;)
-
Thanks for the comments chaps :)
I'll make the entrance a few mm bigger but not overly so.
cheers
James
-
Somehow I've missed this!! >:(
That's looking cool James!
-
I think that have the balance about right there, James.
Once the other aspects are in place, roof, sides etc. it will look much bigger anyway.
A single facing of any building is deceiving and will always make a building look smaller to the eye.
Looking forward to seeing this progress.

But the chap on the photo isn't standing on a textured base, and he may be small?
Lovely looking piece though, regardless of size issues.
I'll happily take one. If I can afford it.
Any other legation buildings planned?
-
Great entrance building, James! I think it has just the correct proportions for the wargames table. I hope you won't mind me showing my own version I did for our large Peking game for Crisis in 2004:

Thank you kindly gents :)
Any other legation buildings planned?
A few I should imagine, the chap is a normal 28mm on a normal base, he's just lying down.

Not at all Michael, I've already got those pictures stored away in my reference folders :D That is the best looking Peking game I've seen so far, great stuff :-*
I've got an on going commission on the go at the moment and I'd though I'd show the progress because it's got me thinking on other types of buildings to include on the range. What does a town have... Shops :)
As this one is a commission it's not really suitable for casting but its certainly given me a few headers as to how to best approach the means to produce a suitable cast version in the future.
It's only got a very light coat of primer on it to show the details in a better way and the slightly darker area to the top has just been inked to show the slatted window shutters but the idea is to have several of these next to each other but there are small side windows if they need to be stood alone.

Once again, my lack of camera skills has prevented a decent photo for the first one (I really must start to take lessons or read up on it or something >:( ) but you should get an idea of what's going on. As its a wip commission there's still a lot of detail to go on which I shall post in due course.
cheers
James

The shop is looking excellent already. :)
-
Agreed, that is really very nice - love the little details. :)
-
excellent work. When can we buy them? Do you plan to manufacture accessories?

Two of the buildings are in the catalogue already with some more to follow during the Christmas period. I do intend to make some additions in a similar way to the Japanese range that I already produce.

Not quite but very nearly. I've got six to do in total and the maiming four are all blocked out ready for the details. The two that are near completion are below.

They are gorgeous and very likely to be filed for inspiration ::)
One very lucky fellow is going to have one hell of a table with another four as well. Are they all going to have closed shutters upstairs?
-
More goodness ;D
Now get back to Sherwood ;) :D
-
Are they all going to have closed shutters upstairs?
Pretty much, no interior access was the brief.
I've worked out a way to get the main building cast and then to have optional frontages that can be stuck on. I'll get these out of the way and start to work on them proper :)
Now get back to Sherwood ;) :D
Already am ;D
cheers
James

Great work, they look pretty atmospherical :).

Superb, James, absolutely lovely. :-*

Only just noticed this thread. James those are wonderful creations, the tiling in particular is superb. Do you think these would work for the New Territories circa the late 1960s?
-
Top work James! :-*
-
Those buildings would fit into the old Chinatown of Singapore that I use to frequent in the 70s, so should fit equally well for the New Territories of the 60s. Just need some small edition to show the date they're set in (for example a string of bare brightly coloured light bulbs strung across the front of one of the shops)
-
The building look great - very well done.
Some years ago there was an article in Military Modeller, showing the construction of a large (boxed) Boxer Rebellion diorama. Sorry but I have no idea of the issue - maybe someone here can recall. It might be worth searching out for reference.
I hope that this helps.
Tony
-
LOVE em'! Nice work. I can see those being used for Malaya/Singapore 1941 and or Hong Kong as well. Brilliant!
-
Many thanks for the kind words and advice chaps :)
I'll hopefully have the other four in a similar state by next weekend.
cheers
James
-
Might just hold you to that ;)
Nice work matey :)
-
I really like these! :) It's a pity that you don't do interior, but we all know what happens when you start doing interior; no one uses it...
How do you do the roofs? You borrow stuff from work?
-
Just noticed this thread, WOW, exceptional work James!!
Love what you are doing.
Our group has Boxers already painted, along with various European contingents.
These are just what we need.
Are you going to mold and sell the town shops as well?
Cheers,
Thomas
-
Wow! Very nice looking stuff!
-
Thanks again chaps :)
Yes, the idea is to get the shops ready for sale but putting my back out put the kibosh on it for another week or two :(
The tiles are Wills sheeting :)

Dam nice Jim! Beautiful as well as inspirational work!! :-* I too will take the liberty of posting some of my efforts in the period. I have done the Legation battles of the Boxer Rebellion at 4-5 different conventions in our area using the "Old Glory" produced buildings from years ago with some of my own "scratched" ones but now...well I think some of yours will be on my Christmas list. We have always wanted to add to our setup by doing some of the town outside the legation walls and have the relief column fight its way in! I really like the shops especially the one with the overhanging balcony, any chance those doors will open to allow figures up there?
We also use Matakishi's excellent "The Natives are Restless" rules, great simple fun rules! :D http://www.matakishi.com/apps/webstore/products/show/3513450 (http://www.matakishi.com/apps/webstore/products/show/3513450),
Here's a few shots of my poor setup from a few years back. I custom-ed out the front of the British entrance with the small redoubt they had built there. They named it after a British officer whose name escapes me at the moment, "Hanely, Henry,...?" I also added sandbags to the top of the British arch as well. It is really not nearly as historically accurate as yours!
I love the Boxer Rebellion period and think it is one of the best for miniatures games and certainly one of the best for conventions! Hope I have not "highjacked" the thread to much, but people can see by these picture how much better your buildings are than these, and you cant buy these anymore anyway! These pictures are from the first con we ran it at and there is a lot more "flotsam and jetsam" added to it but where those pictures are I don't have a clue!
My fellow Bengal Club member Doug and partner in running these games in full Mandarin outfit! lol

The "Old Glory" British legation arch with a sandbagged redoubt I built.
The "Tartar" wall in the background was built of 12 separate pieces of foam and then covered with a Durhams rock-hard/glue mixture and has over 10,000 hand pressed bricks done with a square brass tube tool I made.

Truly awesome!
:-*
As nice as the board is, hanging a few paper lanterns and dressing the part really seems like it added something to the experience.
:D
-
Great looking buildings. I like the idea of a Chinatown setting for EotD! I have heard various versions of the 'Chinatown' at Limehouse in Victorian London, but all seem to agree that the Chinese population was small. That might suggest there was little in the way of Chinese specific architecture but I wouldn't mind taking a few liberties with such lovely buildings.
-
That looks a great board, one of the best I've seen for the period 8)
cheers
James

That is a truly spectacular board! Well done to yourself and any who helped!

Those are exquisite. Hats off o you sir!

Amazing work! Love the intricate details :) I was wondering if these wouldn't work with 1930's Sino-Japanese War or in a Sand Pebbles type scenario? If not, any suggestions???

Got another building done, this time a bit wider than the norm to help break up the monotony. The last one will be extra thin :)

Nice work, mate.
As gamerMac said: These are something special :-* :-* :-*

That different width building really does make the street seem more natural.
Nice touch!
8)
Now for the 'diet' version... ;)

Those are truly amazing. I can just SEE Steve McQueen in there (maybe not what you were going for, but still... )

Fantastic work, James!

Little more can be said mate. Amazing. :-* :-* :-*

Thank you kindly chaps :)
The thin one has to have the front re-done but I do have some walls that will go in the catalogue once they are moulded (they are sitting in the mould box right now), I meant to post last night but forgot.

The chappie is a 28mm Foundry.
I'll be making a couple of different types of wall section, almost completely brick and heavily ruined along with corners of course :)
So much to do... lol
cheers
James

Dems nice Jimmy.
don't suppose there is enough call for undamaged sections on the basis they just look so much less interesting?

Pretty much, yeah and looking at plenty of locale photos there isn't a lot of refurbishment going on lol

James

Very nice. I can see these being very useful for a variety of settings. They'd be great for pulp and I'd bet they would fit in with a Spanish type setting too (Napoleonic, SCW, etc.).

Totes :D

Totes :D
Yeah, totes amazeballs! lol
-
Really smart looking terrain as we would all expect James :-* :-* :-*
Darrell.
-
Yup - clean and brilliantly done - as expected from James. :)
-
Nice!
:-*
I could use some of them too.... ::)
Just gotta keep my eyes open for when they are ready.
(Need corners, though...).
-
Thanks chaps :)
Corners are on the way but I'm changing the way that I do them and they will be rather shorter than normal. Should prove to be more useful this way.
cheers
James
-
The more I see, the more impressed I get! :-* Looking great!
-
They're all great quality James; buildings and walls. Simply astounding your productivity and attention to details. :-*
-
Well, this thread hasn't been touched in a while ::)
For Salute 2017 I'll be putting on a 28mm Boxer Rebellion game anfd I thought it would be best to make an early start lol
The general idea is to have the Tatar wall maybe a third of the way on the table with the outside third as a siege line and the inside two thirds as the legation quarter...
I've got quite a few more Chinese buildings designed and in the pipeline but I though I'd start with a small building base.
The grey building is a master ready to mould and the frosted one is a master being made currently.
Lots more to follow at a leisurely pace ;)
cheers
James

Great stuff. Am looking forward to seeing a lot more of this 8)
2017 .... How many new projects will you start between now and then? :D
-
Oooooh. Looking good.
Dorset in 2016 then? ;)

Lovely looking stuff. BTW if this for Salute 2017, does this mean the Wizard's Tower will be featuring in a demo game the year after?
-
Good start :-* :-* :-*

Thanks chaps :)

Painted the Chinese from the catalogue and also painted the next building in the range. There's also a new wall section in the form of a round doorway

Good to see this collection growing matey :-*
-
Very nice, and not tempted in anyway, no , not tempted, no new projects.......
-
Thanks chaps :)
Here are a couple of shots of some of the other masters I'm working on.
First off, just a simple out house, nowt special really but useful.
And then we have a town house that will have swappable frontages. The core building will stay the same but there will be a selection of fronts to choose from. I might even do a different core building to mix it up even more.

James, do you know this book: http://www.cbt-chinabook.de/assets/s2dmain.html?http://www.cbt-chinabook.de/fremdsprachigebuecher/kulturkunstgeschichte/00000095000bfa02b.html (http://www.cbt-chinabook.de/assets/s2dmain.html?http://www.cbt-chinabook.de/fremdsprachigebuecher/kulturkunstgeschichte/00000095000bfa02b.html)
It's in german and chinese, but that doesen't matter at all: 281 beautiful watercolour paintings of Beijing in the 1920/30s, when the city had still prevented her old style from the 19th century! Full of details, streetlife, houses, markets, strange professions and so on. All completely gone today, painted from life by a master painter of that time. A bit expensive, but I wish I would have had it already when I was building my Boxer rebellion buildings ... Highly recommended!
-
I haven't Michael but thank you for the link, I shall no doubt get it soon :)
cheers
James

Once again the sands of time just run away, never to return but getting some new Boxer Japanese sculpts has re-sparked my interest in the period (even to the point where I bought some 15mm Japanese infantry and Boxers...).
Anyway, the building base is continuing and once the filler is dry later tonight I'll put some textured paint on and then give a creamy primer coat ready for painting tomorrow. Whilst the filler is drying I'll do some flagstones in the courtyard :)

Sorry a bit late here but I fully agree. Also late and off topic but I saw your table at salute but didn't see anyone who looked like you, so couldn't tell you in person but your table was one of the best 2 there in my opinion. The attention to detail was fantastic and the painting of the buildings was very delicate, much better in real life than the photos, I took loads of pictures.
Cheers
-
Thank you kindly :)
I was stuck behind my stall for most of the day and only ventured out with permission :D
cheers
James
-
That last one is a mini masterpiece. The colours and tones are so wonderfully subtle.
-
Once again.... brilliant Sir !

Lovely work. Nice to see Asian buildings.

Thanks again :)
I've got some 15mm masters on the go that I'll hopefully get some pictures of next week (not so busy next week).
