Title: Michka's Star Trek project (Painted first 28mm sculpt 5/5/15)
Post by: Michka on June 13, 2012, 05:03:44 PM
This is just the beginning of a 28mm Star Trek project. I actually have quite a few more of these guys but they aren't ready to show yet. I was using an older basing method that I no longer like. The ones in the front are from Matakishi's original Starship Crew set. The ones in the back are from the classic Star Trek Monopoly set that came out years ago. I hope to have some more to show in the near future.

ahh have you seen this from wizkids http://wizkidsgames.com/startrek/star-trek-expeditions/ (http://wizkidsgames.com/startrek/star-trek-expeditions/)

its the newer version with crew models, maybe a little pricey but they also have expansions with extra crew available

A good job: the Matakishi ones are particularly well-assembled, with no trace of joint for the separate arms that often made them look a little off .  Hadn't seen the Monopoly ones before.  Any chance of a separate photo of them?

Those photos are terrible. I was way too sleepy this morning to be taking pictures. Here are some I just took at my dinner table. Now including Klingons.

First off, the Matakishi's.

Then the Monopoly one. I forgot to add the Spock conversion. I replaced his Vulcan hand gesture with a phaser from the Matakishi set.

And finally, Klingons. These are a combination of Victory Force Spacefarers and Mega Miniatures Bridge Crew. The short guy middle front is the Mega Miniature.

Still not the best pictures, but at least you can see the guys in the back.

Simply amazing. I have a number of these in storage and this may bump them up on the painting queue...

I like the Klingons too, great idea using Victory's.

Keep them coming!

I especially like the bases - looks like "studio floor concrete painted to look like an alien planet" lol

Fantastic!

Dredd and Star Trek, we have similar lead mountains it appears :)

Good work on the Megamini bridge crew.  I would never have thought of using those as the TOS Klingons.  I like my Klingons with bumpier foreheads, but those guys are instantly recognisable.

I am looking forward to seeing more of this project, keep it up!

Kudos for the bases too. Nice, elegant, and revealant !

The figures are nice too. Very original choice to represent the klingons in star trek classic shape.

By the way, I'm pretty sure some indie miniatures casters are selling nice "compatible" star trek metal figures. I cannot remember the brand for now.

The Gary Mitchell, Space Vixens From Mars (http://spacevixensfrommars.com/shop/) range I suspect.

Click the link and use the menu on the left: "Figures"->"Rim Alien Range".

Edited to fix link

The link doesn't seem to work. I found another company :

but I'm pretty sure it's not the one I remember (or cannot remember to be more specific). I especially remember women officers wearing mini skirt (call me geek  lol )

Wonderful paintjobs! 8) 8) 8) 8)

Do you have a list of colors used? The Command 'gold' is realy good. Plus, how did you paint those Victory Force/Mega Miniatures "Klingons"?

EDIT:

Plus, did you modify the standard Victory Force crew, adding goatees, or the AU versions of the figures for the Klingons?

For the Command Gold uniforms I used Reaper Faded Khaki with a Mustard Yellow dry-brushed over it. The odd thing about the "command gold" uniforms is they were actually Avocado Green. They just look gold through those old cameras. I was going to say in the studio, but we've seen episodes shot in the sunlight, and they still look gold. For the Red Shirts I used Reaper Blood Red with GW Blood Red dry-brushed over it. (See how important it is to say which company made the paint.) As for the Klingons, I alternated Reaper Bright Gold with Reaper Beaten Cooper, and separated the colors with thin lines of black. It's not the most accurate representation of the classic Klingon uniform, but it's instantly recognizable. For the trousers (I was going to say 'pants' but I remembered how many Brits there are on this forum and thought better of it) I used black with a light GW Tin Bits dry-brush. The metallic trousers work much better then I ever expected it would. I didn't do any major conversions on the Klingons other then to smooth out a couple of details in the tunics and modified the one rifle. It looked too much like a Next Generation Phaser Rifle, so I tweaked it with some bits of plastic and a couple brass rods. The goatees are just painted on. I believe these were the non-AU versions of the Spacefarers.

Yes, I've seen discussions about the costuming for the various TOS fan films, such as "Phase 2" and "Farragut" mention how the colour of 'Command Gold' is something of a misnomer!

And the Klingon color scheme works really well. Considering the metallic look to the original Klingon custumes, I think you came up with a brillaint look for them. Thanks for those color details. By the way, no Science/Medical types painted up?

This may sound weird, but I really like the painting on the bases there.  (I can only echo what others have said vis-a-vis the figures, but wanted to point out those bases in particular.)  That's a different style than I'm used to, and it looks really sharp.

Oh yeah. I got some Science section in the wings. I just needed to make up some more bases before I could do the re-basing on them. I'm getting through my older Trek stuff, changing the bases to these snazzy new bases. That's also what I've been doing with much of my Judge Dredd stuff.

The dark grey bases are a variation of the street hex bases I'm using now. I get the effect by lining up a bunch of bases on a magnet sheet, (I put washers inside the slotta bases) and dragging the different tones of greys and whites across the lot of them. The paints as watered down to create a wet-brush look. Lots of trial and error before they look good, so I try to paint them in batches of ten to fifteen at a time.

Looking great!

I have 2 sets of the original Matakishi ST models, and canīt put them together.

Can you give me some advice of how did you achieve that?

What glue did you use?

Any other tip worth knowing?

Thanks a lot.

I love that Matakishi made Star Trek minis, but I swear he used plutonium for the metal. I have two or three sets of those minis and have only built five crewmen. I've used the accessories for some conversions though, so it's worked out anyway.

I had to pin the arms and heads into place to keep them on. I'd drill the holes for both pieces, then glue the pin in only one side and test fit to see if the look was right. Then I'd trim down the arms or the sides till I got something that I was happy with. For the heads I did something similar, but I ended up trimming more off the neck part of the head instead of the neck part of the body. The real trick is getting the head to sit right on the body. I had a couple crewmen that must have some ostrich blood in them.

 :D  ;D

Yup. That's one of the problems I've too.

Thanks for the tip. I was thinking about pining the arms just as old school gamers did wheels, i.e. PERFORATING the whole wheel and pinning it to the shaft, then trimming and sanding the protuding wire.

Have to try and see how it goes...

Thanks and best wishes.

Do you still call it an update when the thread is almost a year old? Anyway, I have a whole bunch of Star Trek goodies I finally got around to painting and/or re-basing.

First off, we have some more Klingons. These are mostly Mega Miniatures bridge crew with one lone Victory Force mini. The guy in the black tunic is supposed to be a political officer. Since the old series Klingons were based more along the lines of Soviets, I figured they needed a political officer.

Next come three Heritage Models Skorr. These guys were seen in the animated series twice. Not the greatest figures around, but where else are you going to find Skorr? (Actually the real question is, why would anyone want to?)

Here are the Heritage Kzinti. There are only two poses to choose from, but that's better then the one pose Skorr.

I supplemented my Kzinti forces with some Aslan figures from Traveller. I can't remember who makes them right now though.

I'm afraid the Aslan don't really match the look of the Heritage though. What do you think?

Next are some Heritage Talosians.

Finally we have some odd "story device" markers. These are floating orbs.

The orbs could be personifications of energy beings, or ancient robot sentries, or any number of other encounters you would typically find in a classic episode of Star Trek. Here we have the landing party conversing with the command orb (that's the orange one) while the sentry orbs look on.

I still have more Star Fleet to post, once I've painted up some more bases. Maybe this time it'll take less then a year.

After deciding not to gather all my current Science Fiction projects into one thread, I needed a place to put my progress reports on my Star Trek miniatures. As it turns out I already had this thread. So here we go...

I'll start with a couple pictures from my sculpting project I started last month. This is the first time I've tried to sculpt a 28mm miniature.

The figure got better after some depth was added.

It's not a great figure, but it is a great learning experience. Here is the finished figure, all painted up.

The next time I sculpt I'll work on making the hands and head smaller. Also, those eyebrows look like a mentat right out of the Dune movie.

Here is a shot of the sculpt next to the older miniatures I've done.

I seem to have a scale issue. My problem is I like this larger scale, so I may have to do all my own sculpting from now on.

Let me know what you think. I need some honest criticism on this, as I do want to improve my skills.

Plus, I asked about the colours used on the Command and Engineering shirts, but forgot to ask about the Science /Medical colours used.

Hello trynda1701. I haven't been sculpting anything lately unfortunately. I'd like to get back to it though, before my skills completely atrophy. As for the Science/Medical department colors, I think I used Reaper Sapphire Blue for the base color. It's a lovely base blue that is my go-to for most blue tones.

Now you got me thinking about Star Trek. I need focus on Star Wars for my game this weekend, but maybe next week I should dust off the old Sculpting tools. Thanks for reminding me.
